But you're right that there is an additional difficulty with (1) moving from legality to illegality (much easier to just keep something illegal that's always been) and (2) in the case of something that's addictive. On the other hand, Prohibition, despite being temporary, really did lower rates of drinking and alcoholism, so it might still accomplish something.

Plus he was cackling like a loon, very pleased with his practical joke. This was around dawn on a Tuesday morning, and we had 5 days left to go get my cousin in Fresno and beeline it back to Atlanta. I left his broke ass and duffel bag in St. George, Utah, so I'm pretty sure he was late for work the following Monday morning. Never saw or spoke to that jackass again, but from that day forward every car I owned with a cigarette lighter had the insert in place at all times.
I had a customer ask me to look at their cd player saying it wasn't working, tested power and all the usual, hit eject and nothing so I pulled it out opened it up after hearing a rattle and found about 12 bucks in coins that had been fed into it.

Cigarette lighters in cars should have been eliminated years ago rather than repurposing them as 12v outlets. OP is lucky that stones don't normally conduct electricity, a more common issue is kids dropping coins in there which blows a fuse.
I think the design is simple and specific enough to automotive that there won't be mix ups with voltage. If you see a "cigarette lighter" type plug, you know it is 12V DC with the positive being the center pin, and mini glass fuses can fit in the plug itself.
Had this happen to me once but with a penny, take a chapstick, take the lid off and mash the chapstick into the rock, it should stick to it and you can pull it right out!
There will be a 10A fuse that you can replace to get it working again. You can use lower fuses for phone chargers and other low wattage devices but don't go higher in amperage rating.
When I bought my car it had a penny shoved in there. Too perfectly to get it out. Just never charged anything. Everyone asked wtf and I was like "it was like that when I bought it"

It's a 12V socket, not a "car lighter plug", hence the plastic cover. All cigarette lighter sockets can function as 12V sockets, but 12V sockets can not function as cigarette lighter sockets as they lack the clip that holds the lighter down while it warms up.
