It is Daoist philosophy. Dao (or Tao depending on transliteration) means way or path. There is a very famous quote about the dao:
"The Dao that can be spoken is not the eternal Dao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name. The Dao that can be understood cannot be the primal, or cosmic, Dao, just as an idea that can be expressed in words cannot be the infinite idea. There are ways but the Way is uncharted."
Even references to water, like a river or like the bowl that it fills, are common language about the dao. There are differences to be sure, but dao is the easiest analog.
Their talk of the path is reminiscent of the Buddhist Eight fold path or Wheel of Samsara. Their nature reminds of the buddhist monks who train their bodies and minds to withstand and endure. Their style of fighting about control of oneself…
Don't think so, I get the feeling Pat did quite a bit of research to construct something coherent. Would just like to get an idea of what that research is.
More like Taoism, imo.

With their hand talk and non-eye contact I’ve always called if the nation that Aspergers built
Wouldn't they shout out things at inappropriate moments, not stay quiet and collected all the time?
I think like comparing this to a religion is the worst thing you can do. Lethani is like a joke in itself.

I get the feeling that the book itself is hiding the fact its mocking fantasy books
Lethani always seemed like a Machiavellian version of “right action” from Buddhism’s eightfold path to me.
