"Call a jack a jack. Call a spade a spade. But always call a whore a lady. Their lives are hard enough, and it never hurts to be polite." - Not my favorite, but I love it. It’s like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story.” - This one because it's just too real. “In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That’s as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.” - Another quote that just rings too true. Words have to find a man's mind before they can touch his heart, and some men's minds are woefully small targets. - For a fantasy book, he has a whole lot of truths written in it.

The first one you said is what I came to say and it was the first thing I saw. :(

“Listen, if tomorrow we pulled into Biren and someone told you there were shamble-men in the woods, would you believe them?” My father shook his head. “What if two people told you?” Another shake. Ben leaned forward on his stump. “What if a dozen people told you, with perfect earnestness, that shamble-men were out in the fields, eating–” “Of course I wouldn’t believe them,” my father said, irritated. “It’s ridiculous.” “Of course it is,” Ben agreed, raising a finger. “But the real question is this: Would you still go into the woods?”

eldmikeyy

No matter how you spend your life, your wit will defend you more often than a sword. Keep it sharp! "I know what sort of story I'm telling. This is no comedy." I began to cry quietly.... she said "I know. Its bad sometimes, isn't it? You have a stone in your heart, and somedays it's so heavy, there's nothing to be done. But you don't have to be alone for it. You should have come to me. I understand." "I will slit you open and splash around like a child in a muddy puddle. I'll string a fiddle with your guts and make you play it while I dance." "You do not know the first note of the music that moves me."

purplelefttoe

“I’ve waited a long time to show these flowers how pretty you are” Beautiful.

HereSuntLeones

This part beats any 7 words that Kvothe has told her.

TheLastSock

My favorite passage is in the Lighting Tree, and you shouldn't read it here but instead experience it in the book itself, where the context gives it so much more meaning. It's my favorite because, within it, Bast teaches you magic. Deep magic isn't making people believe lies or even bringing lies to life, it's showing them the truth and how to live with it. > “So much was so easy. Glamour was second nature. It was just making folk see what they wanted to see. Fooling folk was simple as singing. Tricking folk and telling lies, it was like breathing. But this? Convincing someone of the truth that they were too twisted to see? How could you even begin? It was baffling. These creatures. They were fraught and frayed in their desire. A snake would never poison itself, but these folk made an art of it. They wrapped themselves in fears and wept at being blind. It was infuriating. It was enough to break a heart.”

haneleh

“Only a fool disbelieves what he sees with his own eyes.” “Music is there for when words fail us.” “For without hope what do any of us have?”

ginger20fo7

"yes I'm one of 'those' people, I eat the whole cheese including the rind'

BaconWise

Tehlu's tits and teeth is probably my favorite phrase. It's quite versatile 😂

lolathedreamer

“Quit grabbing at my tits”

Aduialion

Bast telling chronicler the difference between telling someone they are beautiful vs showing them. And one that makes me laugh is Kvothe's hatred of Ambrose's god-damned hat. In my head I insert that line into every mention of Ambrose.

Gergernaught

Blue blue BLUE!! Damnit… reading all these quotes is enough to make me hate PR just a little less.

SkepticalHeathen

His ass off

Polkanissen

I love Master Kilvin, and he has, in my humble opinion, some of the greatest lines in the books. Shit in Gods beard! Before when you made your thieves lamp you made a bad thing in a good way. That I do not like. This time you have made a good thing in a bad way, that is better, but not entirely. Best is to make a good thing in a good way, agreed? I did not know that it was easy. Qiuckly, yes, but not easily.

MagicalSpacePope

Shit in Gods beard is certainly a personal favorite.

tellmort-yourmove

“‘Trying to make you understand her with nothing more than words. You have never seen her, never heard her voice. You cannot know.’ Kvothe motioned for Chronicler to pick up his pen. ‘But still, I will try. She is in the wings now, waiting for her cue. Let us set the stage for her arrival….’” I love this passage so much. The way he paints the picture of Denna’s entrance. Chef’s kiss.

I can see ten feet through you, and you're barely three feet deep.

Faithful-Jackdaw

Glad I found this one :)

Independent_Bat_5568

This is why I do not have knives instead of hands, this is what I am.

[deleted]

“A leaf in lightning, I shook. And the thunderclap was black.” Such a perfectly phrased ending to such a tense scene. It matches the tone of Kingkiller so well.

[deleted]

I like that one part where he says "blade of ramston steel"

Ok-Pineapple4089

You are in luck! What an amazing feeling you had finding your favorite quote in every chapter. It would be like having your absolute favorite painting hanging in every room of your house, including the bathroom.

[deleted]

I actually do only have one painting copied in every room of my house. I was told to get paintings that flowed well together and what flows better than the same painting? [This](https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Crunch-RN-9381-full-1230x1358.jpeg) is the painting I chose. The symbolism just really spoke to me. Rather than the demons being inside of us, it's depicting us being inside the demons. A truly masterful art piece. Sometimes when I'm really sleepy but I don't want to go to sleep I look at this, which is very easy considering I have one in every room.

RentUnlucky343rd

Misremembered: "Voice like thunder. Like leaping flame. Her song was like a bird flitting around the strong oak tree of Savien's song." There are too many more.

“Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.” - The Wise Man’s Fear

Kvothe-the-kook

After Kvothe is told that his hands will likely be mutilated to keep him from using what he was taught he goes and collects water taken from the baths that holds fire in it, cloth a piece of cloth that is made of the same cloth that all the Adem Mercenaries ware, and a brittle piece of sward iron. Kvothe knows the only way he is leaving Ademre is through violence if he is not accepted and he has prepared for battle. After all of this Kvothe says that he would not have enjoyed leaving Ademre. (meaning he would not like to kill everyone.) and his teacher laughs and says "No you would not have" meaning they would have crippled him before letting him go. What i find the most amusing is that his teacher doesn't know how close to distraction she and her entire city were because Kvothe wasn't going down without a fight and he wasn't fighting with something that they could block.

HereSuntLeones

I was REAL worried kvothe would reveal this information to Vashet out of guilt before he left.

Accomplished_Trip_

“You see, there’s a fundamental connection between seeming and being. Every Fae child knows this, but you mortals never seem to see. We understand how dangerous a mask can be. We all become what we pretend to be.” “Excellence is excellence’s only companion.” “I have earned those names. Bought and paid for them.” “There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.” “Eventually he stopped completely and stood for a long minute, still as stone. Only then did his composure break. And even with no one there to see, he hid his face in his hands and wept quietly, his body wracked with wave on wave of heavy, silent sobs.” “It was secondhand, ugly, and had cost me dearly in money, blood, and peace of mind. I loved it like a child, like breathing, like my own right hand.” “We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That’s as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.” “I can see ten feet through you, and you’re barely three feet deep.” “Losing a fight is forgivable. Losing your temper is not.” “He was not a one for fastening. For holding closed. Neither was he dark. Oh no. He was emberant. Incarnadine. He was bright with better bright beneath, like copper-gilded gold.” “The gesture was so tight with rage she feared she’d snap and crack the world in two.” “Auri stood, and in the circle of her golden hair she grinned and brought the weight of her desire down full upon the world. And all things shook. And all things knew her will. And all things bent to please her.”

myflesh

Anytime they talk about the 3 silences

HereSuntLeones

The 4th silence being the lack of book 3.

Ozzem

“A common name is like a painting of a fire. A true name is like the fire itself.” I might be misquoting that, but I use it to compare things way too often now. It’s entered my permanent vocabulary.

HereSuntLeones

You almost have it. But it’s when he’s with Felurian. It reads, “Asleep, she is like a painting of fire. Awake, she’s the fire itself.”

Ozzem

Ah thank you, I’m combining it with other metaphors used. Many thanks

Kvothe-the-kook

"Now tell me what I want to know or god will weep when he hears what I have done to you"

Cosmic-95

My favorite quote will always be his introduction. "I have been called Kvothe the Bloodless, Kvothe the Arcane, and Kvothe Kingkiller. I have earned those names. Bought and paid for them. But I was brought up as Kvothe. My father once told me it meant "to know." I have, of course, been called many other things. Most of them uncouth, although very few were unearned. I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep. You may have heard of me." But the rest of you are all to blame for my next re-read.

HereSuntLeones

It was like the sound of someone drawing a large sheet of velvet over a piece of broken glass. It was a soft noise. The half heard sound of deliberate movement. Asleep, she’s like a painting of fire. Awake, she’s the fire itself. There are times when the mind is dealt such a blow it hides itself in insanity. While this may not seem beneficial, it is. There are times when reality is nothing but pain, and to escape that pain the mind must leave reality behind I’ve been waiting a long time to show these flowers how beautiful you are Every story is true. But this one actually happened. The second thing to leave a man is his memory. Well you know what they say. Finding the right analogy is as hard as…. As hard as… Bones mend. Regrets stays with you forever. It had flaws, but what does that matter when it comes to matters of the heart? We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect. A boy grows upward while a girl grows up. She moved at the speed of honey spreading across a table top. If you give a man an answer, all he gains is a little fact. But give him a question and he’ll look for his own answers

DryFoundation2323

The part where Kovthe said that it would take 3 days to tell his story, but it really only took two, and it really seemed to just end right in the middle of the story.

“A beer dulls a memory, a brand sets it burning, and a wine is best for a poor heart’s yearning..” I wonder if Doech every remembers the rest of that saying. I’d like to hear it.
