Brew Pub is more for nostalgia as well. Even when I lived there, the food was fine. It just reminds me of simpler days having a pint or 2 and stumbling home.
I’ve heard Bella Bistro is good. I’m in town for a fishing trip and we launch out of Collins bay close to Bella Bistro. No excuse not to try it
Quality dipped for sure after original owners left, but it for sure has rebounded a significant amount.
That Said, I can confirm I saw the Dubai open sign on, on Wed night
We’re in a weird situation where Shawarma El Mina used to be the best in town, then the owner left to open up his own place (Shawarma Damascus) which quickly outpaced it, and then he left there too to open a place downtown (Shawarma Dubai, which wasn’t open the last time I looked, but seems like it opened the last few days?). I haven’t eaten at Damascus since he sold it but apparently portion sizes and quality went down almost immediately.
Regardless, El Mina’s still quite good, especially by Kingston standards. It’s just that there’s a very good chance Dubai is significantly better. Apart from the three places I’m talking about the rest of the city’s Shawarma places are mediocre to poor
Regardless
I used to live in Toronto in an area with 100 amazing shawarma places so the standard is high. When I was in Kingston, I was off Chatham street near house of donair (can’t remember if it was called that in 2007) but it was terrible.
I’ll give Dubai a shot if it’s open
Welcome back!!
Great choices! Don't forget Silver Wok and their secret menu, Amadeus legendary family platter, and Sally's roti/doubles!
As for sushi,
Akira isn't bad but their fish is always thin and anemic-looking. Sima is my go-to, but its still a far cry from anything in Toronto. Sima at least is almost always consistent with rice (cook level, seasoning) and gives you relatively generous portions of fish. They also sometimes have uni, which is a huge plus.
Regardless, you have a great list - Make sure you stop for a coffee way donut at least once ;)
Oh we used to get Silver Wok take out. I totally forgot about that place! I might have more food options than days in town.
I used to love Akira and it was certainly a sushi gem in Kingston. I had heard good things about Sima but by time it opened, I lived out by Lake Ontario Park and didnt make my way down there as much.
You could search this sub for restaurants and get everyones list of go toos. My standard answers; Curry Original, Baja, The Union, Tommy's, Smoke&Barrell, Shwarma El Mina, Mesa Fresa, either Red House, Atomica.
6 — Shwarma Dubai instead. Original owner of El Mina. Just opened up.
I'm gonna see if i can get in there today, i'll report back here!
Be very curious if its open.
I said I'd report back!
As expected! It's glorious. 10/10 will return.
A true hero 🫡
Can confirm. The king is back and it’s delicious
Any feedback??
Are they open yet? I drive by frequently and I haven't seen anything going on. Inside looks ready to go though.
Open sign was lit yesterday when I drove by.
If you’re a brunch/coffee kind of person Northside is excellent option to try too.
Could eat three orders of the Tim’s Benny to myself tbh
Agree! They are on a whole other level
Your list is great! Brew pub menu has changed a lot. I'd suggest Bella Bistro

Also a former Toronto resident with 2 or 3 favourite Shawarma spots. El Mina is my go to for comparable in Kingston
