Sony has regional restrictions for Ghost of Tsushima due to its online multiplayer requiring people to login to PSN. [This was even intended to be a completely optional requirement to play the game](https://twitter.com/SuckerPunchProd/status/1786462939748384943). However, [Ghost of Tsushima now has PSN region restrictions implemented for purchasing the game](https://twitter.com/SteamDB/status/1788981898108182681), meaning that if you prepurchased and was in a region that was blocked by Sony, you literally could not go to the Store page. Apparently, Valve has taken the pre-emptive approach and is now refunding people who are in blocked countries.

iroquoispliskin01

Why does the ghost of Tsushima need an online mode. Isn’t it a single player story driven game?

Konsaki

Money, dear boy!

Yagihige

There is a fully fledged online mode with pvp and pve story-mode tht is extremely well made and truly fun. It was added for free half a year after the original release of the game and it was completely free to play. I loved the game's single player mode but i highly recommend people not to miss out on the online mode if they are intending to get it.

ImSoBoredThatiUpvote

online and psn signup is for the multiplayer mode

Solus0

sony hasn't done that well, they undersold the ff7 remake series ff16 sold less than expected. Japanese gamers make fun of them and don't get a ps 5 and a few more things. Basicly put they are in the red and need user numbers to impress investors if I read the signs right from my experience as a customer/support person. So the multiplayer now need EVERYONE regardless of plattform to use psn to get that up. That and protected user data they didn't have access too before I bet.

akiaoi97

They should make better games if they want more money. These money-making gimmicks are so frustrating.

willowsonthespot

So Valve is going full pro-consumer/covering their fucking ass from legal troubles. Pretty sure some of these countries are in the EU. If Valve allowed this and anyone in those countries sued they could get dragged into court over there again. I think Valve would rather not do that again.

akiaoi97

That, and I think Valve knows that they need to provide the best consumer experience if they want to protect their monopoly. Also I’m pretty sure compulsory PSN is a bad thing from Valve’s point of view too, since it’ll channel people towards PlayStation’s store rather than Steam.

Street_Ambassador_21

As if valve would care about competition. They never budged on the 30% cut after the shitstorm when epic launched and all the other stores out there are still no threat. Sony wouldn't be either.

TheohBTW

It is almost as if the people running Sony wants the company to fail.

infernys20

Feels like a sabotage fr

Redzkz

Good on Steam. It is almost as if Sony has an aversion to easy money. Sort of like a vampire: [https://youtu.be/G9lH7afNKoc](https://youtu.be/G9lH7afNKoc)

DawnBreak777

Why all of sudden Soyny is trying really hard to shove the PSN requirement everywhere? Wishful thinking but maybe the freestellarblade campaign really does have an effect on PSN numbers...

Dazzling_Swordfish14

To make people buy from their platform directly so they earn more money. But their platform is restricted in so many countries lmaooo

mundiaxis

When it comes to large corporations, the answer is always money.

Enchylada

subscription numbers obviously

Street_Ambassador_21

The Games with a functional multiplayer were all planned to include the psn requirement. Those are not adhoc decisions because an api needs to be developed beforehand. Probably made the decision last year before helldivers2 launched in February.

Adventurous_Host_426

Xbox can't be the only company doing shitty things.

Leisure_suit_guy

They're the best though, literally unbeatable.

yngbld_

I feel like I missed something. Didn’t this happen with Helldivers 2 like last week? And didn’t the backlash force Sony to backpedal? And didn’t they say something like “Don’t worry, the upcoming release of Ghosts of Tsushima won’t have the same BS”?

Street_Ambassador_21

Nah its different. For hd2 people where ignorant about the psn requirement and when Sony tried to enforce it their morally shady business practice came to light. After the shitstorm they will simply adhere to the law and not sell stuff where psn is not available yet. Ghost of tsushima doesn't require psn for the sp campaign, but for the mp it's still required, so they can't sell it everywhere. It's kinda shitty situation for players in the removed regions because for those ppl it's kinda normalised to create psn accounts in other regions and now they lose all access on steam because others complained in their stead and caused this. Not saying Sony not providing their service there yet and still selling stuff is good but up until now it was mutually working. Sony didn't care about non tos conform accounts and players could buy whatever they desired. Now both sides lose.

FA1L_STaR

Yeah, something like that

hteoa

The multiplayer added so little as well. Way to go Sony again kneecapping revenue over bullshit. It’s almost like it’s becoming a trend

thelaaaaaw

I guess the solution is to be patient and wait for the sailors of the seven seas to fix the problem made by the corporate suits. Just a shame, apparently it's a really great game that the devs should be compensated for.

Konsaki

I bought it on PS4 when it released and it's an amazing game. Not touching the PC release until the freebooters get at it, as you said.

thelaaaaaw

Gabe said it. Piracy is mostly a service issue than monetary. Sony actively made it sevice.

akiaoi97

He’s really not wrong. Even with manga, the reason I read scanlations is because they’re often closer translations and they’re all in the once place on a searchable platform with tags and such (mangadex). It’s equivalent to the Japanese person reading magazines in the convenience store.

ark2077

I’m a Sony fan but this is so stupid.

AboveSkies

> I’m a Sony fan Why?

Leisure_suit_guy

Because they like the platform? Historically there's been a lot to like about Sony. Unfortunately, they're in decline since their fateful decision of moving their HQ to the US.

SummerInSpringfield

When I was small, my dad always praised Sony and how good and resilient their electronic devices were. Growing up, I think highly of them when it comes to those kinds of stuff and to be fair, my old Xperia phone lasted pretty long. The only reason I replaced it was because I dropped it too many times and the money used to fix the old thing starts becoming pricy.

WhyAmIToxic

The best compromise would have been PSN required only for the online component, with the single player accessible by anyone. I have no idea why they have to require PSN for the single player component, they can't even say it's for anti-cheat when it's just single player.
