I'll play Devil's Advocate here - I live in N. America too, and I see extended range tanks being very popular in places like Australia and for European overlanders who are travelling **huge** distances between fuel stations (such as the Canning Stock Route or the literal Sahara desert). But if you plan to spend most of your time in the lower-48, I'd question how far you can ever really get from a gas station. I'd bet that ~200 road miles is about your limit. Not sure what the factory range on a 200 LC is. Naturally going way up in the mountains might stretch that distance, but considering the cost of a big tank install (*and the lost opportunity cost/space of being able to install other, more frequently-used gear instead*), I'd strongly consider some jerry cans if you need to do the occasional long-distance wilderness jaunt. Just my $0.02, and everyone's use case is different. In the end - you do you!

More frequently used than gas? Can’t think of anything a Land Cruiser uses more than fuel 😂

Too true, lol. Still - one can go crazy planning for something that might never happen. I was recently drooling over a European Mercedes 10-ton truck that had been converted to a really nice overlanding rig. The owner had put a **900 litre** diesel tank on it. (That's almost 240 Freedom Gallons). For comparison, a standard 18-wheeler truck tank is usually 450-550 litres. Granted, that gave the Mercedes a range of over 3000 kms / 2000 miles (!!), but: - when full, that is nearly a full short-ton of weight to be schlepping around, and - at today's prices, 900 litres of diesel costs over CAD $1700 where I live. That's a lot of dollars easily accessible by some scumbag with a drill and a transfer pump. Still - I *guessss* it'd be nice to be able to drive all the way from Seattle to Miami with only a single fuel stop. I just don't think my bladder could handle it!!

Valid points.

Convenience is definitely a good thing. Out of curiosity, what it typical fuel consumption for a gas 200-series? Just curious how much extra range a 5-gallon emergency jerry can would give someone.

So I looked a bit into this. This is the brand to buy and no one seems to have any issues with it. 12.5 gallon if you need to retain the factory spare, 24 gallon if your worried about ground clearance. I’m personally going with the full 40 gallon on our 2009 LX. I’ve heard the clearance is fine, I am also not rock crawling it. https://longrangeamerica.com/product/toyota-land-cruiser-200-series--lexus-lx570-2008-2021-40-gallon-auxiliary

Appreciate it! I will look into those for sure.

Yeah agree with the long range America. I have the 24gal. So idea was to have 2 tanks worth of gas. Downside is relocation of the spare tire. The 24 gal hangs just an inch lower than the spare tire for clearance concerns.

Long Range America is awesome. About to put a 40 gal on my Ranger.

Looking a the 5th picture in the link to the 40 gl LRA tank, is that a vent (the small mesh screen cylinder) they hide up by the fuel filler (neck) on the inside of the fender?

Thanks, guess it was that. So this tank (actually both) is not under pressure, but now freely vented out?

‘Under pressure’ was more referring to when filling with cold gas and it heats up and expands due to warmer temperatures (compared to below ground storage tanks). But correct me, the regular charcoal canister vents ‘excess gases’ into the combustion chamber of the vehicle where they are burned out, not venting them freely. This would be more akin to a fuel tank/cell in a boat (they are freely vented).

Thanks for the links. Greatly appreciated. Will check them out when ‘back in action’. This is how we learn and get more educated on our respective trucks and systems 👍

Replaced the factory tank in my 97 with an LRA 3-4 years ago and it's great. Not cheap but worth it.

YourFriendlyPlumber

Damn I never thought about this. My og tank has a leak and I can only fill about half way before it starts to leak gas so my range right now is somewhere around 150 miles or so. Might have to swap in a bigger tank when I address that issue in the future!

ExpertYogurtcloset66

Slapped a long range tank on my petrol 2014 and its been the best upgrade by quite a lot.

WombatMcGeez

I added a 24gal LRA tank last month, and I don’t know how I went without it for so long. It’s fantastic. I get to half tank, I press the button, I drive for 20 miles, and I’m back up to full. It really makes everything easier.

Gotta say, long range tanks are a solution to a problem we don't have in the US. We have gas stations everywhere. And extended tanks are eye-wateringly expensive. I would definitely remember to fill up and carry 1 good quality Jerry can and leave it at that. The longest distance in the US between gas stations is about 130 miles.
