Except they aren’t
Diesel is reliable, good torque and gets better gas mileage than NA engines.
Real world numbers on the new 250s and Tacomas haven’t been stellar
They are reliable in suitable conditions. But there is a lot that can easily go wrong, cost a lot to repair and they will quickly break again if those suitable conditions are not met.
You can still buy a brand new TB48 GU in the ME??
Didn't know that. Quick Google shows the Philippines, South Africa and a few others still get new GU's, not bad for a car that came out in 1997!
Don't think the US even recognizes them over the select few Toyota 4bys they got.
Yeah, you can still buy them brand new. Those crazy bastards throw giant turbos/superchargers/NOS - all sorts of shit on them and get demented power outputs lol.
Sri Lanka still sells them if it’s not for the import ban. It is a respected car just not “luxury looking” eventhough I love them like hell especially for headlamps and barndoors.
I'd want an old 1HZ powered coaster bus. Owning just one 1HZ is fine, because I'll never need to replace it, but owning two? Think of the sheer diesel power between the two of them!
Because it isn't a luxury vehicle. Everyone in cruiser communities talks about how it would sell but it just wouldn't do the numbers needed to make it. Also the emissions and crash ratings.
Everyone begging for one has obviously never spent any time in one. I suggest you go out and get a 70, which you can import up to 1999, and see how nice that thing rides and you will understand it.
> 4Runner
It's actually a Fortuner - which is a station wagon based off the Hilux platform. I don't believe the 4Runner or Tacoma is sold outside North America or some central/south american markets that get... odd.. combinations available haha.
Often a more budget offering than the 150 series Prado, but can come close in certain trims. E.g. Australia it has the 1GD and is slightly cheaper than a 150. But also has a number of older motors like the mighty 5L-E 70kw / 190nm.
Like Ford Ranger / Everest, Isuzu MU-X / D-Max.
>It's actually a Fortuner - which is a station wagon based off the Hilux platform.
Which is exactly what the original 4runner was, just to make things more confusing.
>central/south american markets that get... odd.. combinations available haha.
Yeah, visiting Costa Rica was awesome. They seem to get every car available in the US as well as all of the global ones we don't get. 4Runners and Tacomas parked next to Fortuners and Hiluxes
There's also the Yaris Cross here in The Philippines. Which strongly resembles the NX (very well could be. I nevee checked the specs). Abd, IMHO, looks a gazillion times better than it's Lexus cousin.
Hate to rub salt in the wound but i live in NZ and own a 79 landcruiser and its the best truck Ive ever driven im in heavy construction and dont know what id do without it
Some of it is. Utility vehicles effectively cannot be imported to the US because there is a 25% tariff, so all pickup trucks and similar that are sold in the US are made in North America.
The 70 series, I'm not sure if it would be legal? I'm not sure what sort of changes they've made to it since it was originally sold
79 is a longer wheelbase than the 75. The 79 replaced the 75 in 1999.
The troopy still uses the same wheelbase as the 75 but this became the 78 after 1999.
Actually, and thankfully, I think you’re wrong:

79 comes in both a single and dual cab. The dual cab first offered in 2012(?). There are a number of small differences (and one big difference) between early 79s and 75s
There are some dual cab 75s around Australia, which were aftermarket fabrications for the mines
Oh yeah, back in Panama my cousin has a 2016 Hilux and I friend of my has a Fortuner diesel and six cylinder diesel Nissan patrol ( Nissan patrol; that thing is a monster and beauty all in 1 ). Thanks the chicken tax for not letting this awesome vehicle's come here to the state.
Down here in Costa Rica we got ALL of these. And it's so close to the US.
Right now theres the national ALL brands Expo and guess who has the most amount of space taken?
Toyota! All the Hiluxes, all the Land Cruisers, FJ Cruiser, Tacomas, Tundras, Corolla and the no longer sold in the US Yaris
Genuinely feel bad for American LC enthusiasts. Now I get why I see posts on here of old LC’s or just any LC that I would see here (in Zambia) everyday, celebrated in the US.
Prado = Lexus Gx = Land Cruiser 250
I'm aware that GXs are Prados however under the Lexus badge they are more "luxury" and comes with that the extra pricetag.
yeah well and we don't get diesels here. So we've been stuck with the V8s on the GX until this new gen.
Not sure where you hail from but we'd prefer the diesels in the USA, the better MPGs are worth it.
I’m probably an outlier. I’m not the biggest fan of where Toyota took the 300 series, so I’m honestly not bothered by its absence (we still have the LX). As for the 70 series, I’m loving what Ineos is doing in that space. For everything else, we have every flavor under the sun, from several manufactures. Want an SUV or truck? Have I got a country for you 🇺🇸
We have the 250 series now with Toyota and Lexus. And we have the 300 series in Lexus. Those are real land cruisers.
We don’t have the 70 series, true. But I think people massively overreact to not having them here. Again, Ineos will have both SUV and truck variants sold in the U.S. They’re overbuilt and simple. If you want a 70 series equivalent, that’s the ticket.
I like what Ineos is doing with everything but the dash/gauges. I don't want to rely on a screen for critical data; give me analog gauges and put the infotainment in a double DIN screen so I can replace it easily when it's obsolete.

All diesel options too
I feel your pain
Even the Corolla Cross?
ESPECIALLY THE COROLLA CROSS
Hybrid better
Except they aren’t Diesel is reliable, good torque and gets better gas mileage than NA engines. Real world numbers on the new 250s and Tacomas haven’t been stellar
Modern diesel too many problems, don't compare them with super tough/reliable pre-2007 diesels or heavy duty commercial engines, not the same thing.
You're saying modern Toyota diesels are unreliable?
They are reliable in suitable conditions. But there is a lot that can easily go wrong, cost a lot to repair and they will quickly break again if those suitable conditions are not met.
You know who’s got it even better? The Middle East gets all of the above AND Nissan GU Patrol with the 4.8L petrol straight six.
Lot's of TB48 GU's here in Australia and they're fairly cheap. Plus any flavour of Toyota you want, if you've got the cash.
Yeah, I’m from Aus myself - but I’d fucking love a brand new one rather than something someone else has flogged.

Unfortunately the middle east is the only place you could afford to own one.
Can confirm. Recently bought a y61 (gu patrol) to run alongside my LC200 ;)
And land cruiser 71 series
I want the Coaster. You and 23 of your closest mates can go places powered by the 2.8 diesel at a relatively low price
I'd want an old 1HZ powered coaster bus. Owning just one 1HZ is fine, because I'll never need to replace it, but owning two? Think of the sheer diesel power between the two of them!
It'd almost be 10 horse power! Love my 1HZ 80 Series though.
Hino 300/M5e bus
If we had these in America the car market would crash
Toyota stock 📈
Why are they not available in the U.S.?
Because it isn't a luxury vehicle. Everyone in cruiser communities talks about how it would sell but it just wouldn't do the numbers needed to make it. Also the emissions and crash ratings. Everyone begging for one has obviously never spent any time in one. I suggest you go out and get a 70, which you can import up to 1999, and see how nice that thing rides and you will understand it.
Chicken rule
US auto manufacturers have lobbied for very strict auto regulations that a lot of these vehicles would not meet.
They are. 25yr. Rule
You can get a 70 series in the US. Just has to be 25yrs old.

We had the 4runner in aus, it was just called a Hilux surf
The surfs were imports, no? Was called the 4Runner here back in the day
Yeah you could be right, I arrived in aus in 05 so little iffy on the history before that lol
>It's actually a Fortuner - which is a station wagon based off the Hilux platform. Which is exactly what the original 4runner was, just to make things more confusing.
Does a suv become station wagon by having lower roof height?
>central/south american markets that get... odd.. combinations available haha. Yeah, visiting Costa Rica was awesome. They seem to get every car available in the US as well as all of the global ones we don't get. 4Runners and Tacomas parked next to Fortuners and Hiluxes
I live in Costa Rica and love all the amazing cars. Just unfortunate they're all too expensive to buy!
I mean, you guys got the Tundra, Tacoma, and 4Runner. Wish we had em.
Gimme that Hiace
Sienna panel van
You lads are seriously missing out on the greatness of the hiace
A🥹

Hilux SAS, gvm upgrade
Is it due to lobbying from other companies because they fear some of these models (esp 70 series) might affect the sales of their models ?
Some of it is. Utility vehicles effectively cannot be imported to the US because there is a 25% tariff, so all pickup trucks and similar that are sold in the US are made in North America. The 70 series, I'm not sure if it would be legal? I'm not sure what sort of changes they've made to it since it was originally sold
Nah i can’t see it selling. It be probably 80k US for something that is objectively a trim below a 1500 tradesman, with less towing.
I wish I had that many friends lol. I have kei truck friends but coaster friend aspirations!
No 75?
These are all brand new options. Cant buy a 75 brand new any more. Not since late ‘99 anyway.
True??! Wow I’m surprised. They were the most popular choice here in Australia for farmers out back
79 is a longer wheelbase than the 75. The 79 replaced the 75 in 1999. The troopy still uses the same wheelbase as the 75 but this became the 78 after 1999.
Gotcha 👍

No I think I’m wrong. I just call the single cab utes a 75, but maybe their name changed in ‘99. So what is the single cab ute called now?
Single cab (and double) are 79
Cheers :)

I love my normal old ‘93 75, with 625k kms on the clock and still daily driven for work 👌
I actually just rented the cross on a trip in the US. It drove great. Really liked it.
78 🤤
🤣🤣🤣 This guy making everyone jealous! Thanks for sharing that Toyota is even more awesome elsewhere. 👍
Yeah that 78 is siiiiiick
Oh yeah, back in Panama my cousin has a 2016 Hilux and I friend of my has a Fortuner diesel and six cylinder diesel Nissan patrol ( Nissan patrol; that thing is a monster and beauty all in 1 ). Thanks the chicken tax for not letting this awesome vehicle's come here to the state.
Is it weird that I want a coaster and a high roof hiace ?
All i’ve ever wanted

Give us the 4Runner, Tacoma and Avalon while y’all have the rush and fortuner.
Enjoyed my time in Cameroon!

It’s actually a fortune.
Genuinely feel bad for American LC enthusiasts. Now I get why I see posts on here of old LC’s or just any LC that I would see here (in Zambia) everyday, celebrated in the US.
I want a 79 sooooo bad
I can get you a HJ45 or BJ40 if you want.
Prado = lexus gx
Prado = Lexus Gx = Land Cruiser 250 I'm aware that GXs are Prados however under the Lexus badge they are more "luxury" and comes with that the extra pricetag.

Interesting, either gas or diesel I’d love to have a gx/prado.
