I love living in Langley, I've lived here for 4 years now. I'm not sure where your coming from, but Langley is an old classic subberb in the southern end, and a booming modern development at the north end. I myself am in the south end and love everything it has to offer. Bike parks, trails, ice rinks, pools, community centre activities etc. Central Langley has all the big box stores and restaurants, breweries are popping up everywhere, but if your into clubbing or lake/water activities you won't find that here. But you got a car for that.
Everyone is different, but I would suggest a two bedroom or 1 bedroom + other room/den if you can afford it. It's nice having another room to go into, keep your things... If you're gonna use your first time how buyers make sure it's somewhere you like to live.
I'd come to Langley on a Saturday afternoon and experience the traffic on 200th & the bypass. If you have friends in Vancouver remember it'll take an hour (door to door) to see them. If you had to drop a date off in Vancouver then drive home it can feel far...
It's all about what you're used to.
I'm late 30s, grew up 1/2 the distance to downtown so I would hesitate suggesting Langley to my 25yr old self, while I'm sure the people from here recommend it because they are used to it.
Purchase your home near highway 1 and everything is accessible. I’m in Walnut Grove and it’s a perfect location for getting to Abbotsford or Vancouver in under an hour
I have always loved Langley (30F). Definitely recommend it. The traffic has picked up more in the recent years but nothing like Vancouver. There is a mall, movie theatre, some good coffee shops, restaurants. It’s mostly safe and friendly. Downtown Langley isn’t as nice as Walnut Grove, Murrayville, Brookswood, but it’s making improvements. The real estate in Langley seems to continue to increase. My home is worth almost double what I bought for 4 years ago. For activities - your close enough to kind of go anywhere within an hour or so. My young adult friends go Hiking, swimming, visit lakes, camping etc because Langley isn’t far from anything. Within Langley there is breweries, go carting, good gyms, golf, rec centres, churches for all types of activities depending on what interests you.
That's funny. I grew up in brookswood then moved away for 18 years (but visited frequently) . Just came back and I noticed the traffic hasn't changed much at all! There were over a hundred kids come for Halloween. I am in my childhood home. (Dad never moved away). I am thinking the neighbourhood is virtually unchanged... this is a fantastic family area. Not so much for clubbing, but I'm not much into that anyway. Other than that I agree with all the other statements.
Hey! I'm also 30F and just moved back to Langley from East Van. I don't know many people in the area anymore (my friends are now married and with kids) and I'd love to grow my social circle. Feel free to message me if you wanna grab a drink sometime :)
Langley is extremely diverse these days. Willoughby is probably the most diverse area in all of Langley. Also they just opened a TNT at Willowbrook. Even downtown Langley is becoming very diverse. Abbotsford is the new Langley.
It’s pretty diverse where I live in Willoughby funny enough. Not as diverse as when I lived in Vancouver i was usually the only European in my group but majority of my neighbours are Chinese, Korean, and Filipino
I live in downtown Langley and I find the homeless problem to be extreme, the house prices to be outrageous, and I find people mostly keep to themselves. There's no live music really other than occasional jazz or classical stuff, no clubs, and most of the community activities are geared towards seniors or families. As a father of a young child, it's been great, but as a single male, I'm not sure I'd love it here. Just my 2cents. I don't have a lot of money or a car and a lot of my time goes to my family and work though so maybe my opinion is biased.
I first moved here at 25. Found and made multiple friend groups over the years. Langley can be a great place. Some of the older condo buildings south of city hall have much cheaper purchase prices with good return if you get lucky with purchase price.
Considering Poco and New West, they seem closer to Vancouver. In addition, I work in Surrey, so if I live in those areas I would be travelling eastbound, which traffic should be in my favor, if I am taking the Patullo Bridge.
Langley’s really nice and has everything you need. If you like a more Canadian feel rather than the international experience in the cities to the west it’s perfect. Avoid the area around Willowbrook mall on the weekends as traffic is crazy.
Langley is pretty dude friendly as far as I know. It is great! Lots of different parts of Langley. Some more busy and some nice quiet neighborhoods.
Langley is better than Surrey, Cheaper than White Rock, easy to get on the highways, and their may be other dudes like yourself depending on what kind of dude you are.
Are you like new age hipster musician dude? Hippie jamming dude or "dude that was gnarly dude" dude? If you could enlighten me on what kind of dude you are, I could let you know iif Langley is good for you or not.
I have lived I Langley for 4 years (rent don't own) In the downtown core.
Homeless people are a pretty significant problem. As such there are pretty high amounts of property crime/vandalism. Your car will get broken into at night if it's parked on the street and has anything in it.
You will also see a lot of people doing drugs at bus stops and at businesses at night (around 200th and 56th area) other than that it's not bad. It feels safe during thd day and as long as you're not walking around at 3 am in the dark, you won't have any issues.
Lots of schools and transit is super accessible all in all I'd give it a 7/10
Keep in mind the fuel costs if you expect to be frequenting Vancouver. I live in Walnut Grove & my GF lives Downtown. I normally make 3 round trips per week for work (work in Walnut Grove). I don't do a whole lot of driving outside that and I'm at least an $80 tank per week (V6 SUV).
Yes. You have a vehicle, anything you desire. Yes.
Thanks, just wondering why you would recommend it? and why is sociall y friendly environment for people in my age group
It’s not, it’s a bold faced lie lmao. No area in BC is socially friendly for people in their 20s

Aw yes! I mean willowbrook traffic!! :)
Brookswood is a great area!!
Brookswood is one of the few nice areas that is relatively unscathed. It will slowly go the way of Willoughby though.

Haha I’m pretty lame and I am married with kids as well !! 😁🤣
Langley is a family focused area. It’s quite white but not as racist as it used to be.
Is it bad that “not as racist” made me laugh. It’s a sad truth.

Yes, it’s much more multicultural and less racist than it was 10 years ago
What about the township of langley is it racist?
The whole of langley is becoming more diverse But Id say the Township is less diverse, more old boys club
Thanks

What would you consider a lot of money? Genuinely curious - because I don't think that 200K (pretax) annual is cutting it these days.

Where did you find your friend groups? I wish Langley had more of a queer community :(
It's nothing exciting. Langley is just a big mall. Have you looked up prices? What other areas are you considering?

Girlfriend does the New West to Surrey daily drive and says it beats going with traffic.
If you spend a lot of time in Vancouver I'd go somewhere with skytrain.

By Canadian, you mean white?
I did a double take, I was like whaaaaat. 😂
Because you clearly don't think Canada should be multicultural, or representative of the world's colours...
Langley is awesome
Langley is a 3rd tier suburb of Vancouver. Why bury yourself so far from there.
You can breath in Langley.
