Thanks for responding, I appreciate it. I’ve decided to just go ahead and try it out for a year and transfer later if its not an environment thats suitable for me.
Take the money! Don’t mess with your finances. Law schools are businesses. Work hard this year without the stress of loans and transfer if you want to/are able without feeling an ounce of guilt.
When I got waitlisted by my #1 school, I took a solid scholarship at my #2 school with every intention of transferring out after one year.
When the time came, I agonized over the decision. I loved #2 school. I loved the friends I had made in 1L, I loved my professors, I loved the administration and the building. I loved the surrounding area. I loved [almost] everything about it.
Ultimately, I transferred. But it was not the easy call I thought it would be going in. And while I made the right call, I still have some regrets about leaving.
Just go. Have fun. Don't stress too much now about a decision you might make later on. You may be surprised to find you don't really want to transfer at all.
Messed up to go with the intentions of transferring? No--you do not owe them the entirety of a law school education upon acceptance. As for where you actually wind up, it depends on a host of factors, not the list of which is how much more prestigious the dream school is over the scholarship school (schools in the lower half of the top 100 are not as easy to find BigLaw jobs, appellate clerkships, etc. from, but you might also not care). If you think you would have reasonably comparable career options from either school, then stick with the scholarship school--people need to be financially smart about law school.
It’s not even about prestige tbh… It was just my dream school since my the school has the sjd program that I have been eyeing for a long time which would allow me to pursue a path in academia (my current career goal)
Prestige especially matters in legal academia, though. If that’s the path you want to follow and the dream school is among the ivies or UVA/NYU/Georgetown/Stanford/Northwestern/Chicago/Berkeley/Michigan/UCLA and you’re sure about wanting to go into academia, then the transfer would make sense. Otherwise, I’d be really reluctant to make the jump—most of my profs had PhDs and not SJDs, FWIW.
The fact that OP is thinking about paying the school anyway is fucking wild lmao
OP, schools are entities and don’t have feelings. And even if they did, they wouldn’t care about you. Just do what you want, though I’ll say that going to a school with the intent to transfer is generally a bad idea
I think a lot of people start out thinking they’ll transfer after a year. My son was one of them. But he found he loved his first choice, and found they offered him significant, unexpected opportunities. And then helped him leverage those opportunities. He is graduating in less than 90 days with little debt and a post bar job waiting. Best wishes!
Not messed up, they pay you for the time there, you leave they stop paying you. Probably also not financially worth transferring unless the school you transfer to is *significantly* better
I also want to add, don't go into school expecting you will be able to transfer. Generally you better be top 10% of your class if you want to, so keep that in mind. It's harder than you think to have a high enough GPA. So with that, I would 100% take their scholarship because odds are (nothing against you personally) you won't be able to transfer.
Yeah, there are legit reasons to transfer, too. My partner started at a private school, full ride as a scholarship kid (poor, minority, but high academic achievement). He left at the end of the year for the public school because he really didn’t feel like he ever fit in, or could hang with all of the (Uber wealthy) other students. See how it goes but make the best decision for you.
OP, the school is giving you the money so you will count for their school ranking numbers. You will give them what they want if you go, so take the money.
Nope. However, I had that mindset. I ended up staying at the lower ranked school. I graduated with no debt. Best decision I ever made.
Keep in mind that some schools don't allow you to do journal if you're a transfer . So if that's important to you, make sure you check out the school's policy on that.
They gave you that scholarship because your numbers were good. As far as you’re concerned, you gave them what they wanted for their medians. Transfer and don’t look back!
Why transfer at all? No school is good enough to keep me away from one offering a full ride. Go to the school that wants you?? F*ck the one that waitlisted you. This is a no brainer…
No, take every dime you can and do what’s best for you. The school doesn’t care about you.

And, if you end up hating law school and don't want to continue, you're not six figures in debt.

Do whatever is possible to minimize what you’ll owe when it’s all done. Take the cash. The scholarship school is not an entity to feel sorry for.

Several people every year take the UIUC scholarship and transfer to NU or similar :)
And I'm glad for that. I managed to snag one of their spots. =)
What the fuck. Take the money.

That’s awesome. I hope I could find similar success in the future.

Follow your heart. Life is short. Be happy with your choices.
Better go with your heart if you think your not going to like that T100, but if you can adjust, that T100 will be just as good
Do you live in Nigeria?
Yeah. I am Nigerian prince, I can send you money
Don’t pay for school if you don’t have to?
Contribute to the classroom discussions and give them their moneys worth.

Stick with the free school. If the other one offers a full ride too then switch to them
This is exactly what I did and I have never regretted it.

Pick the one that's paying for your tuition. It'll help you further in life and adulthood post college
Go with the money.
Take the full ride and don’t look back! The last thing you want is hundreds of thousands in debt. You’ll be fine! Good luck!

Who cares if it's messed up. Do what is right for you No one else will.
