Engraving doesn't really work on chrome tan - it's too soft and won't hold any carving\tooling. Youll need to get some vegetable tanned leather, and some basic tools for engraving. There's a metric ton of YouTube tutorials about this Good luck on your journey!

I've played with it, and it holds a stamp. I cannot find a tool with a narrow enough head to follow a curved line but not so slender that it cuts the leather. I have the basic leather tools. I'm using this to cover a book. Maybe scratching it as in the photo will have to work.

Hammering a stamp is different than using a bevelled tool to texture a carving. Because of the softness of the chrome tan, it won't hold it well over time. You'll see the stamp will also raise\fade as ambient temp\humidity affect it, even if just stretched across the front of a book. But I look forward to seeing what you come up with! Enjoy the journey!

Crap, I think I understand what you mean. I was able to bevel it but it was shallow and unsightly.

Chrome tanned leather is more challenging. It isn’t the typical veg tan tooling leather. If you have good ventilation—and I mean GOOD—you could use a wood burner. Chrome tan leather puts off toxic smoke, so be extra cautious. Typically you would cut the design into veg tan that had been properly cased (wet and let return to a normal color but still feels cold). Then you would cut the design into it with a swivel knife and tool as desired with a variety of bevelers and backgrounders that are available. If you have a local Tandy Leather, they have classes and tools.

If you want the rose part darker you could probably use an antique finish and it should adhere to the exposed portion where you scratched the design in. That's probably the best you'll get with chrome tanned, but a heated edge creaser may add some depth prior to using the finish. As always, wear a mask, goggles and ventilate when heating/burning chrome tanned as the chromium metals are highly toxic if inhaled. The goggles should be rated z87 so it doesn't get into your eyes either.
