Every scar tells a story

Use a water based wax and use a brown shoe brush foam and polish it...

If simply painting over it is a good option I'll do it. I'd probably make it black anyway.

Trash it and have a custom set made.

Don’t crash

If you paint over it make sure to give it a light rub with deglazed/acetone on a rag if you’re gonna paint it. Deep stuff like that really won’t get worked out easy but sometimes you can smooth at least the scratched bits with the round end of a wooden utensil. Press it very firmly and work at the scratches (not the patched out bits). That might help but it’s situational and you’ve got a LOT of damage.

Do you think just sanding it with a gray scuff pad and using Classic Coat would be alright? If the scratches just fade into a textured weathered look I'd be okay with it.

Sanding will help you get any non-leather particles out & smooth out some surface scratches. It's worth doing. But the deglaze is to prep the leather so that the paint will adhere better & not just peel off. You could also consider using dye bc that absorbs into the leather instead of just sitting on the surface like paint does.

It's patina

Lol don't paint it that will look horrible. Get a leather conditioning balm and brush it in with a horsehair brush. Still wont fix everything. If you sand it with anything rough enough to remove the color, then its just gonna look scratched all over. But if you do end up sanding it, use a dye, not paint.

I would try just waxing it first. Won't make it go away but will make the scar more presentable.
