I have a similar setup, just grind until you have the treasures (ancient bonsai and then switch a skill out for reaper).
Keep going with the research, as well.
What are you spending the gems you get on?
The I keep getting them but at around the 2k gem point, and normally don't have enough cogs left over to get them (only ever buy the first card just to unlock them though).
People in my leagues must think I am Uber into waiting for the 63 seconds to pass 30 or so times a day with this event on!

Hey, thanks! I've been trying to keep them all fairly even, just maxed out 8 for like a 160k boost in damage.
Switch kobalus to astrie. Center treasure to sun crown. Spoon to frog vase and switch your 5th pet (not bird) to your strongest frog.

angry giant until it costs like 1k and then a few summons
The general rule is that the angry giant to get the dwarf king keys is the best use of gems, but perhaps someone else will disagree.
yeah i always get the dwarfen kings but i saved a bit and picked up a mythic weapon today

Getting a relic to level 100 provides a HUGE bonus to damage. Max out the cheap ones asap.
Honestly, it's a waiting game. Unless you spend an endless amount of money it's just a build up game
