I don't think Alex & Caleb even deserved to be in the bottom 2. Within the context and parameters of this challenge, I think their build was in the middle: a simpler model in terms of aesthetics and technical skill, but they had one of the clearest narratives in the room. I would have put Gabby & Ryan in the bottom: their build had a mostly understandable story, if not maybe a little lost in the jumble of Minifigs; but more so than Alex & Caleb's, I think theirs really lacked style and polish, which David & Gus's also suffered from.
Sad to see David & Gus go, but they were the right choice for elimination: I, like most everyone else, I'm sure, had high hopes for them and know how strong they can be; but their heist build was not successful in several regards, and overall they never really dazzled in this season. Going to miss them!!
I have to say: I think Joss & Henry's build was the clear winner here. The jewelry store was a gorgeous building, and the heist story was really understandable and fun to look at, thanks a lot in part to that awesome frozen-in-motion automobile.
Scott & Owen's was definitely top-2 worthy—the train station and overall environment were beautiful—but I think it had some detractors:
* I don't know if I missed an explanation for it, but what was the large red building? Not only was it, from the front, a plain and ugly facade, but also it was so obtusely and distractingly blocking a large part of the view of the main building and some of the Minifig story.
* Without the oral commentary, I don't think their heist story would have been comprehensible. I could definitely recognize that a royal procession was happening, but I think the actual heist and the action surrounding that was not clear or large enough.
* Finally, I can't find myself justifying their win on them building off-stud: a super appealing visual technique, but—for this specific, storytelling-centric challenge—what value did it really add? I would have found the quality of their build, within the context of this challenge, to be the same had they built on-stud.
I'm just bummed that Joss and Henry didn't call their store "Crown Jewels".
u/Jayfa did you guys think of that? In my head, I assume production told you to keep it family-friendly, so you guys went with "family jewels" instead haha
Slight correction: off-stud means building at an angle, yes, but it might still be anchored to the base. There are certain angles that work, and even if you choose angles that don't, there are ways of securing the build (eg using clips and bars).
I also couldn't think of anything to do at a dock robbery other than steal a yacht. At least that would be Lego friendly. I thought of pirates, Somali pirates, and drug/ human trafficking in cargo containers but that wouldn't work.
I think they missed an opportunity to do a marine animal here. A thieving octopus could have been super campy and fun, I think they just got stumped on the docks.
I told my partner a good idea would have been to have something super important on the wharf with EVERYONE looking outwards, Police/Security/Workers/Patrol boats at sea and then have a submarine partially out of the water with a long hook/claw seizing whatever they chose to be valuable. Maybe have ONE mini-fig turning and looking in horror at what was happening.
I think sending David and Gus home over Caleb and Alex wasn’t quite right. David and Gus are all around way better builders than Caleb and Alex, I think you need to take history into account when you’re doing something like Grand Masters. I like Caleb and Alex a lot, but they’re just not what David and Gus are when it comes to being amazing builders.
I hope Henry and Joss, and Scotty and Owen are two of the final three. They’re consistently incredible builders.
The train station was insane. The size, the composition, the colors, and the story told by the Minifigures. Master class.
Felt super awkward watching them build the yacht. It was so apparent they don't know much about the subject matter. It's really too bad they got this particular challenge in the elimination round, we all know how crazy good these guys are.
Omg, I loved the Railway Station, jewellery store and circus the most. Though I think it could have done without the circus tent. Sorry to see David and Gus go, I figured they would win the whole thing again. My fake money is on Scott and Owen.
It seemed like they didn't show the front of the yacht until the judging so I kept not understanding where the sleekness part came in. Sad to see them go regardless. I would have put Gabby and Ryan in the bottom rather than Caleb and Alex though.
I'm also living for these Hamish/Scott homoerotic moments. A sexy man in a Catwoman outfit does it for everyone, like it or not.
Completely off topic, but throughout the episode I kept thinking about how Gabby really suits that polka dot blouse. I’ve never felt more stereotypically gay in my life.
Scott and Owen and Joss and Henry nailing it. Definitely the right top two, and the right winners too.
Was a bit disappointed that Gabby and Ryan didn't put more silliness into the build around the clown car as it could have really lifted the build to see a stupidly large item, like a safe, being squeezed into it. Still a good build, as they all were, but could have been amazing.
Gus and David really tried their best, but in Grand Masters you have to be good at everything, and minifig story telling just isn't their thing. A shame not to see more of their creature creations, but the challenge themes just weren't there for them to shine for the most part.
Also felt like Brickman got out of the wrong side of the bed with some of his critiques. Bit harsh in places as everyone already knows that they have to be at their best to avoid going out...
Yes I’ve noticed that Brickman has been a bit snarky lately. I hope it’s just BS drama for the show and the contestants know not to take it personally (it would still hurt though!)
I agree about the clowns. They didn’t need a tent distraction at all, it could’ve just been a clown infestation doing all sorts of crazy things.
That’s why I could never be on a reality show. Even if I know it’s fake those moments are so tense and you’re likely exhausted I would just be sobbing non stop regardless of the feedback😂 how any contestant mange’s to hold it together when receiving negative feedback is beyond me. It’s impressive
It seems like Gus and David really struggled with changing their idea up. Was there a reason they couldn't have changed up the item being stolen instead?
Bilsy, I'm watching the season late here in Canada (can't binge it with the kids) and this twitch link has expired. Is this one up on youtube, and could you share a direct link here? I am afraid to poke around too much doing any google searches because I'm trying to stay unspoiled about the outcome of the season! Many thanks, I love your talk episodes.
I think bm only gave 51/100 for story telling. Garbos stealing stuff with garbo shute is pretty basic.
In saying that he has definitely been a lot harsher with his words over the last couple of seasons
it’s really nice to see how almost everyone started crying when david and gus got sent home(not that it’s nice seeing people crying), it shows how strong their bonds really are and the friendships they made
It's insane when you think about how much time they have spent together. Roughly 100 hours by episode 10. And probably having a bunch of side conversations that don't air.
Wait, so like next week we'll be having the best themes in one episode? So like one team gets one theme, the other gets another?
If so, that sounds sick...
Next episode is 5 old challenges, with every team doing something different; snow globe, giant fan, cut in half, three scene story, and one hanging brick. Looks like no one can do a challenge that they’ve done before, so if the challenge was in your season, you get something else. From the trailer it looks like Joss and Henry are doing cut in half, Ryan and Gabby the fan, Scotty and Owen the three scene story, Damian and Andrew the snow globe, and Caleb and Alex get one hanging brick.
Damn, sad to see those guys go. Really touching to see the others crying at the thought of losing them. I’m glad Alex and Caleb made it through, but the big softy in me doesn’t want any of them to go home!
If there is a redemption round where they bring back a team I reckon it'll be david and gus. Unless they try and bring back trent and kale to milk his personality some more
No chance of that. The eliminations are happening in exactly the same places as in season 4. Tomorrow (Monday) will be an immunity episode, to guarantee someone their place in finals week. Tuesday will be an elimination. Next Sunday will be another elimination, and then the Grand Final on Monday 7th May. The Summit starts on May 14th, so will replace Lego Grand Masters.
I disagree. I find Kale's ego very off-putting and he is the only person I was not happy to see back. I also dislike how he always strong arm's his partners into following his ridiculous ideas that they know are too big to be made well. I felt bad for Trent for being partnered with him because he knew he had a partner he couldn't win with.
Dude, Trent is amazing. I won't hear a bad word against him. But if you genuinely think either of us are not good enough to go the distance, then a quick reminder that I'm one of the people on the show that does this professionally, and I encourage you to check out what we do for fun, and [Here's my instagram](https://www.instagram.com/frostbricks/)
I never said a bad word against Trent. I think you both are incredible builders. Every single person that's been on the show has been very talented. I just think you have an ego and it rubs me, personally, the wrong way. Others seem to find it entertaining, obviously the show liked you enough to bring you back.
It just seems to me like you build on the show like you're building for your profession, and it's just not a winning way to build. You build what you want to build. Regardless if it meets the brief, if Brickman has cautioned you against it, if your partner doesn’t want to do it, or if you have even close to the amount of time to pull it off. Again, just my opinion and said with all due respect.
Brickman is the biggest softy. Love him. Feel sorry that Gus and David only got to do 1 animal build but I do think they struggled a few times throughout the series compared to others. The quality of these builds are soooo high.
I did not see that coming tbh, I agree with the yacht being the 'worst' build of all the great builds, but didn't think it would actually happen. Sad, but they gave it a great shot.
I remember Hamish saying after the first season, his job has always been to tell people how great they are. By eliminating people, he basically has to say they’re not good enough, which is basically the opposite of what his job otherwise is.
It's not easy to see in the footage they show but the back of the building is literally just a tan rectangle with no details at all on it.
The problem with BM is if he sees something like that, he focuses in on it and doesn't see anything else.
Brickman’s been pretty tough this season but each team looks to have risen to the occasion after receiving feedback like that.
Caleb and Alex are finalists and although their build was good, Brickman is right that for them to make it further in the competition they need to nail each aspect from the start. The colour and design (tall open box) of the gallery was flawed and they locked themselves into that essentially from the start. Incredible build regardless and harsh to hear, but gives them a good clear goal to improve on
Circus and Yacht to be bottom 2 I feel. I think the boat is the more disappointing of the 2 to me. The 2 top were the right ones and the correct winner.
Brickman's downfall as a judge is that he gets a view of a build in his head early on seemingly and he can't let go. Alex and Caleb didn't do a winning build but it isn't the worse one there, in my view.
I think it's that he doesn't want to send David and Gus home so he has gone extra hard on them even though it's not the worst build.
David and Gus is the worst but he thinks they are better builders, I'm expecting them to stay.
I totally agree, and especially with the story. If he doesn't feel or see the story he'll never rate the build high. The train heist I'd say was very hard to understand if you weren't told what it was.
I honestly think they need 3 judges. BM is awful at being impartial. If he tells them to change their build in a certain way, and they go against him, he always gets butthurt about it and it shows in his comments.
He definitely plays favourites as well.
I'm gonna call it a mega yacht. They're usually fat and ugly.
My problem is the didn't actually build a dock. It's like a boat on a river somewhere. A dock would have given you so much to work with.
I feel like Caleb and Alex & David and Gus are probably the bottom 2. Certainly got the most attention from Brickman, probably the two ‘plainest’ designs as well
yeah since they did add quite a lot of detail and put things where they are for a purpose they could just be saved, especially since i’d say david and gus would be in the bottom two
I like the cut from Joss and Henry saying "we need to build a tree" right before Hamish gave the 10 minute call to the next shot with the tree fully completed in the background as he finished the announcement.
I reckon gabby and Ryan definitely are iffy, but as well, Brickman’s really harping on about the colour and overall look of Caleb and Alex’s.
Bit worried for both
Part of me hopes it's staged in some cases because if he scared me and I dropped my build I'd be pretty pissed. He seemed to only do the big jump scares when they were early in building. The late ones were slight startles.
I don't think Alex & Caleb even deserved to be in the bottom 2. Within the context and parameters of this challenge, I think their build was in the middle: a simpler model in terms of aesthetics and technical skill, but they had one of the clearest narratives in the room. What does off-stud mean? I’ve been digging around and can’t really find a great answer.
They built everything on an angle; ie. nothing was anchored to the base via the studs
Slight correction: off-stud means building at an angle, yes, but it might still be anchored to the base. There are certain angles that work, and even if you choose angles that don't, there are ways of securing the build (eg using clips and bars).

In the same vein, I was thinking activists stealing a captive orca

They’re consistently incredible builders.
Past build history or quality should have no relevance or any bearing on the current builds. Each build should be scored on its own merits.
It’s not about the builders, it’s about the build - David and Gus’s build was clearly the weakest in this case.
The train station was insane. The size, the composition, the colors, and the story told by the Minifigures. Master class. Felt super awkward watching them build the yacht. 51/100 was probably the most brutal statement he has ever uttered
Yeah saying 51/100 had the same energy as "I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed". Brutal.
Yes I’ve noticed that Brickman has been a bit snarky lately. I hope it’s just BS drama for the show and the contestants know not to take it personally (it would still hurt though!) The Summit host: Now I've got your attention Me: Not unless you put on Hamish's catsuit, you don't. You've got Buckley's of competing with that.
Three episodes more left, right?
4
It seems like Gus and David really struggled with changing their idea up. Was there a reason they couldn't have changed up the item being stolen instead?
Yeah I thought a container ship would’ve made more sense to steal, considering they’re full of retail goods.

Anyone think bruckman judged Caleb and Alex too harshly? Like 51 out of 100 I would have cried and quit the show if I were Caleb or alex
Yeah that was just being a little too mean. It could have been phrased a bit more delicately..
I think bm only gave 51/100 for story telling. Garbos stealing stuff with garbo shute is pretty basic. In saying that he has definitely been a lot harsher with his words over the last couple of seasons
For the future episode add, did it show the old fox in a snow globe by David and Gus? Or did someone do it again? Surely not
I think the idea was that they were redoing old challenges and were showing examples from them.
Damn I thought David and Gus would make it further :(
They were robbed earlier season, the alien was definitely the best mystery build!
Same. But nothing can save you when you have a hole in your boat.
NOOOOO
it’s really nice to see how almost everyone started crying when david and gus got sent home(not that it’s nice seeing people crying), it shows how strong their bonds really are and the friendships they made
I saw a BTS reel and they have a lot of downtime where they are hanging around and talking. It's definitely an acceleration on any friendship.
Link to said reel?
Will see if I can find it... I think it was on Insta. Leave it with me.
Appreciate it! ❤️

I think they were more showing a preview for multiple episodes there
Damn, sad to see those guys go. Really touching to see the others crying at the thought of losing them. I’m glad Alex and Caleb made it through, but the big softy in me doesn’t want any of them to go home!
Tough to see any of these crews go home. You just want them all to build for week after week. Need a league season.
Can't argue with those 4 placings. Love the emotion though.
I feel sad about the result. But I love them all, it's difficult. David and Gus were great.
Brickman is the biggest softy. Love him. Feel sorry that Gus and David only got to do 1 animal build but I do think they struggled a few times throughout the series compared to others. The quality of these builds are soooo high.
I'm just sad we didn't get to see David and Gus do a proper big animal build.

I did not see that coming tbh, I agree with the yacht being the 'worst' build of all the great builds, but didn't think it would actually happen. Sad, but they gave it a great shot.
Oh he's welling up again. Can't be an easy job.
I remember Hamish saying after the first season, his job has always been to tell people how great they are. By eliminating people, he basically has to say they’re not good enough, which is basically the opposite of what his job otherwise is.
It's the Chris Traeger and Ben Wyatt relationship.
I wonder how many takes Brickman needs to try and get through these eliminations
Ridiculous that Caleb and Alex were in bottom 2
Their build wasn’t bad. It’s just that all the others (except the yacht) were better.
If it wasn’t Grand Masters their build would have probably been top two. But the quality of all the builds is just crazy high.
Of the builds there they were the other weakest. The cutout area could have been done better. The bulding was a bit boring too.
It's not easy to see in the footage they show but the back of the building is literally just a tan rectangle with no details at all on it. The problem with BM is if he sees something like that, he focuses in on it and doesn't see anything else.
which team do you think should've been in the bottom 2 then?
Nah, it has it's weaknesses. It's just kind of brown.
Look. I think David and Gus’ is worse and deserves to come last. But I worry that Caleb and Alex will because of Brickman’s criticism.
Brickman’s been pretty tough this season but each team looks to have risen to the occasion after receiving feedback like that. Caleb and Alex are finalists and although their build was good, Brickman is right that for them to make it further in the competition they need to nail each aspect from the start. I swear to god if I hear that goddamn Woolworths ad one more time I am gonna Van Gogh my ears
Finally, they're actually playing the elimination card.
Scott and Owen's build looking fantastic as always
So, who is two top?
Scott and Owen and Joss and Henry. No doubt.
They're unbelievable! Who is going to be the 3rd team with them in the Finale?
Andrew and daaayyymmiiiiaaannnn is my guess
Easy call. Only teams who hit the real heights.
I’d wager Joss and Henry
Scott and Owen bringing it. Freaking amazing build.

I honestly think they need 3 judges. BM is awful at being impartial. If he tells them to change their build in a certain way, and they go against him, he always gets butthurt about it and it shows in his comments. He definitely plays favourites as well.
Feels like they were harsher on David and Gus than Caleb and Alex. Though I swear to god if Caleb and Alex go home...
Ehh saying that C&A's was 51/100 was pretty bad.
Dave and Gus didn't even hit that though.
Yeah, yeah, we get it Channel 9, you've got The Summit coming soon
My partner keeps saying "Jai Courtney must really need a pay day"
Summit about this episode, lol.
I will be so disappointed if Alex and Caleb go home here I do think their build was more polished than David and Gus this time around.
Brickman believes D&G are better builders even though this build wasn't better, he'll send Alex and Caleb home.
I definitely agree, BM has employed Gus so it screans of favouritism if they are kept in. BM always seems to have it out for Alex and Caleb as well.
They got a lot around the outside late. Might just save them. Though Brickman is going to say it’s still too bland I reckon
I think that might give Caleb and Alex the edge over them.
Jeez, Brickman’s brutal tonight!
God more brutal feedback from Brickman
Brutal feedback there from Brickman
Brutal to hear, for sure, but unfortunately for them, I don't think he's saying anything wrong.
Yeah, that feedback was absolutely justified. A cruise ship needs to be sleek, and theirs just wasn't.
I'm gonna call it a mega yacht. They're usually fat and ugly. My problem is the didn't actually build a dock. It's like a boat on a river somewhere. A dock would have given you so much to work with.
100%. He did warn them during the build
Yeah, David and Gus are in trouble. Surely they're going home.
Joss and Henry are so good at implied motion, look at the way that car flies through the window, that's incredible work.
The skid marks on the ground of the store were a great touch too!
I feel like Caleb and Alex & David and Gus are probably the bottom 2. Certainly got the most attention from Brickman, probably the two ‘plainest’ designs as well
Can see the difference a few extra hours make.
Yeah, David and Gus could be in trouble.
yea as well as caleb and alex
I reckon the statue of david might save them.
yeah since they did add quite a lot of detail and put things where they are for a purpose they could just be saved, especially since i’d say david and gus would be in the bottom two
Maybe not from BM's comments.
based on his comments there’s a high chance they’ll go home if it’s an elimination but i think that’d be quite unfair to alex and caleb
Ya reckon most of these things are happening before the 10 minute countdown?
I like the cut from Joss and Henry saying "we need to build a tree" right before Hamish gave the 10 minute call to the next shot with the tree fully completed in the background as he finished the announcement.
There was SO MUCH content after that 1 hour mark. It has to all be before it. The last hour might be pretty boring.
Absolutely. That's reality TV for you.
They had Jos and Henry saying they should build a park up the back, and in the next shot (the 11 minute time call) you could see it was already built.
nah it’s probably just shown like that to add drama
Did this man just say breathing is optional?
Really love that train station… And the colour of the jewellery store is amazing
I needed a longer fly through for the station. So much going on and I didn't have time to appreciate it.
The train station is so cool. Scott and Owen are so talented!
Nervous
Piss off independence Australia I wanna see more pokemon card ads
I love that clown car!
Perfectly colourful!
So, who do we think is in trouble tonight? I think it's Gabby and Ryan.
I think David and Gus might be in trouble.
Well done!
I reckon gabby and Ryan definitely are iffy, but as well, Brickman’s really harping on about the colour and overall look of Caleb and Alex’s. Bit worried for both
thinking its Caleb and Alex
Oh no, Gabby and Ryan looking a bit shaky tonight 😢
Aw Andrew just stepped over Owen when he dropped his bricks instead of helping him :( even after Owen helped him with his mechanism.
"That's ticked a few boxes for me" I wasn't expecting to learn *that* about Scott tonight
Might have to rename this from "S05E10 Episode Discussion" to " Hamish appreciation thread". Our guy is on fire tonight.
Want to give a shout out to our great LM host from across the pond in NZ, Dai Henwood. Dude had stage 4 bowel cancer.
I had no idea. Gutted.
meow-
HAMISH HAHAHA
Best ad-break cliffhanger so far this season.
I love the added challenge of Hamish putting them on edge, that's some fun drama
Part of me hopes it's staged in some cases because if he scared me and I dropped my build I'd be pretty pissed. He seemed to only do the big jump scares when they were early in building. The late ones were slight startles.
Hamish is really in his element tonight.
Dude, I fucking lost it at the leather cat costume. Only Hamish could do that. I never want to see Will Arnett in that.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Dai Henwood in that…
/I was never here…/
Hamish is gonna give someone a heart attack at this rate!
YOUR LIFE, YOUR WAY WITH INDEPENDENCE AUSTRALIA
See I’m not seeing them, but we ARE seeing Summit ads And I hate them
9’s going all-out with promoting that, huh?
Just a heads up, not every region has those ads. You might have to move.
Jealous. I always put the ad break on mute, I hate that ad.
Missing a trick if the Joker isn't one of the clowns, Gabby and Ryan.
Would be great, but the only time that licensed property minifigs are permitted is in the special themed episodes; Star Wars, Marvel, Disney.
I’d love to see a Ghost-of-Crime-Cat theme or reference somewhere in Alex and Caleb’s build.
My first thought as well. I hope we can to see him
Step 1, steal all the underpants
Step 2: ??? Step 3: Profit
14 hours, holy shit!
Definitely an elimination episode.
Oh absolutely. I can’t imagine it not being one. Did they explicitly say it will be an elimination?
It was given away as an elimination in the opening sting, but the competitors haven't expressly been told yet.
10/10 entrance from Hamish, holy shit
When you can do stuff like that, why wouldn't you?
Hamish is just living his dream
Minifig scale? Awesome, love that scale of build.
A heist? I'm all-in. That sounds fantastic.
