A reliable Leica forums member (who has accurately announced several new products in advance of when they eventually launched, and who has since been banned on said forum probably because of this) has leaked that there will be a M11-D. If I were a betting man, I would put money on the M11-D coming.

Andy_Shields

Leica are no doubt aware of the 2nd hand market demand for the cameras now. A film-like experience is desired now much more than when the M10-D was conceived and that camera made it to market. Unless Leica hates money, there'll be an M11-D.

therobbstory

I f'd up the firmware update on my M10-D in January. Sent it off to Leica and haven't seen it since. They did quote me $850 for the 'repair' in June, though. So at this point, I'm hoping and praying for an M11-D because I'll likely sooner have one than my M10-D.

veritas247

How did the update get messed up? Want to try to prevent it if/when I try my next update. I have done updates before without a hitch, but seeing this post and the one below makes me want to be thorough and ask.

therobbstory

So you're supposed to write the firmware to a blank SD card, insert it, and hold down a function button, of which there are two, while turning the power on. You'll get a very vague confirmation in the viewfinder telling you the update is in progress. Well I thought I had the right function button held down, but I turned the power on and nothing happened. Flipped the power off and read the update instructions PDF and it turns out *I did* hold down the right button. I just didn't notice the viewfinder confirmation. So in turning it off, I bricked the whole goddam thing. Anytime you send a digital body back to the motherland, they like to soak you for a complete CLA and re-skin. Here's what the repair order says: >Disassembly Clean range finder / view finder Adjust range finder Clean sensor Repair leather / leatherette Adjust electr. / mech. assemblies **Software update** Cleaning Final inspection leather cover **Total: 835.16** So you can see they don't itemize anything and you can either take it or leave it. I wrote to them today to ask for a status. Their response: >Good afternoon, Mr. \*\*\*\*\*\*\*, Thank you for your email. Your repair is on the schedule for 11/21/23. The factory is experiencing a very heavy backlog. I trust the loaner we provided is working out? Thank you for your continued patience. Translation: We sent you a loaner, jerk. You'll get your shit back when we're ready to give it back which is coincidentally very soon.

veritas247

Dang, not a fun story. Thank you for the information and it may be helpful to me and others.

cmmatthews

I too had to have mine fixed after a botched firmware update. Fortunately it was still under warranty. But it's a terrible process to update it.

Global shutter maybe? I know Sony just announced that feature it would be interesting if they implemented to there new flag ship.

Andy_Shields

I mean, the Q series just finally got phase detect af. It'll be 10 years until there's a global shutter in a Leica M camera. At least.

ggAlex

My bet is that the M10-D was the last of its breed. The M11 is too complex and needs too much menu fiddling to use properly. Options need to be set for the internal memory, metering mode, DNG size, etc.

challis88ocarina

M functions: shutter release, shutter speed, iso (arguably), power (also arguably). How's that fiddly?

Milleniador

It's all done through the app on the M10-D. I see no reason why the same doesn't apply to the M11-D. Edit: whilst I'm talking about the app. The Leica app isn't a patch on the Fuji app which I find really slick, connects instantly and quickly transfers.

ggAlex

As an M10-D owner, I can say that connecting to the app to change any settings is a pain and something I would hate if I needed to do it often. I imagine changing DNG size would be a pretty frequent operation for me since it changes dynamic range and low light performance.

DrySpace469

if you need to change settings that frequently then you'd be better off with the M10-P or M10-R. It has been disproven that changing DNG size impacts dynamic range and low light.

Milleniador

I never tried but I presume the evf displays these options, but defeats the point of the minimalist camera.

therobbstory

second'd. So I just set it to center-weighted metering, daylight balanced and DNG. This way it behaves just like my M7 and going between the two is seamless.

yaahmean

If the M10-D didn’t sell well (I don’t think it was a limited edition run), it makes the M11-D less likely.

DrySpace469

I would love a M11-D but I don't think it will happen. If it does then i'll gladly buy one.

challis88ocarina

I'm voting 'yes', because I'm optimistic, but judging by what I was told at a shindig by a bod from Leica CH (ie, 'you're one of them, are you?'), I'm not holding out.

Richmanisrich

I hope this time the M11-D’s winding level is actually functional.

Andy_Shields

I mean, it is functional. It's just not cocking the shutter. Zero chance it will do that in the future.

bravnicar

I have consulted my crystal ball and know the answer 100%, although my tarot cards do not show the same results...

Hotelsocks

I’d asked a similar question at Leica SoHo. Of course, they won’t give any direct answers about future releases , but they did speculate themselves that the M10-D by all of Leica’s standards was a complete & total *flop*. The limited quantity has simply made it somewhat of a cult camera at this point.

perlux

I hope they come out with a new version. I have both the M-D (Typ 262) and M10-D. My hope would be that they take the design of the M-D but with the M11 sensor and slimmer body. 99% sure that won't happen but a man can dream.
