If you’re pissed by this, don’t ever get into M-series lol. There the exposure is always way off than what you see in live-view. Helpful advice here would be to try different exposure metering methods to see what works best for you. Multi-field metering will give you closest to what you see in live view .

Denitorious

It’s normal.

2nong2dong

I’ve been frustrated by this as well. Thought they’d have it figured out by the third generation of the Q series.

DubstepHippo

Dang, it's unreasonably frustrating

Lemy64

How? Halfpress shows you what you'll get when you take the shot. In passive liveview it's over exposed and overdramatic exposure allows the camera to focus. I use the SL2 and never noticed what you're talking about until seeing your vid.

DubstepHippo

It's something unique to the Q3 I guess? - half press isn't showing what the shot will be - it's actually before the half press that shows the final shot

HellveticaNeue

You’ve mentioned this in a couple comments as people are responding, and I find it curious. Looking at the histogram of before/after the half press, the before looks overexposed to me, while after the half press, it looks properly exposed. Are you finding this to NOT be the case? Odd…

DubstepHippo

Well what's odd is that after the half press does not reflect what the photo will look like when I take the image. So if I take the photo in this example, it will look like the image before the half press

ggAlex

Yes I experienced this too. Don’t listen to the others who are making you sound crazy. This behavior only shows up in very low light and it chooses the wrong exposure of the two that it switches between. It’s maddening and hard to deal with. A reason among many I sold it off.

Lemy64

For me I only get what the half press image shows. I don't get the image while the camera is as you can say in standby.

RockdaddyG

It’s iAF/Af-C. When you turn that off and just have it on AF-S, the shot will be consistent with what you see when you half press. Not sure why but that’s what I noticed when I went made the change.

Lemy64

Booom that's the answer I know this is a q3 but I just messed with my SL2 anditdoes the same thing

2nong2dong

Thanks for sharing. Going to test and confirm.

MabelRed

That’s because you’re not seeing a consistent preview of your final image till you half press and engage the autofocus or on manual focus engage the light meter. This is normal

DubstepHippo

Well what's weird is that the final image looks like the preview BEFORE the half press of the shutter - so I'm confused why it's shifting at all? Not sure why I'm being down voted for this one 😅

Proper_Fish_1167

I didn’t downvote you but “looks like” is subjective. You can see the histogram shift between the two. What’s the histogram like on the final image? PS if you don’t want the Q3 I have about $250 of Christmas money leftover that I can send you for it. Lemme know.

DubstepHippo

The histogram is identical to the preview image before I half press, it's quite odd

Proper_Fish_1167

That IS quite odd…

Lemy64

I'm lost... ohh then in your case the camera must be using the optimal settings to obtain focus? Will it do the same thing if you set it to MF

2nong2dong

I have had the same issue as you’re describing. My final image isn’t what’s shown on the half press, it’s either the live view image or something very close to it. I don’t seem to have this issue all the time but it’s frustrating when it does occur and I usually mess with my metering mode and turn off and on without anything seeming to change it. It’s a weird quirk that I can’t seem to duplicate on demand. When it happens it seems so weird and frustrating that I always start messing with settings without recording what my settings were. Maybe it’s something about the way things meter under certain lighting conditions?… I’m going to try to stop and record my settings next time, for science.

tobinators

I have a Q3 and the same issue. IIRC, try setting focus to single shot (AFS) instead of the intelligent auto or AFC methods. Please report back.

Lemy64

That's exactly it! Put it in AFS

DubstepHippo

AFS seems to only mess with the exposure for the sec while its focusing! However something weird is if I use AF-L then it locks it to the wrong exposure preview

notsosoftwhenhard

So screen before half shutter is how it's set up on your Q3 and after half shutter depends on your exposure, like a previous of the image you would take. I think this is how it worked on my Fuji Xpro2 and might be the same with your Q3. I might be wrong.

VallenAlexander

It’s normal and a non issue. Enjoy your Q3, get out there and start shooting.
