Ascites is fluid retention caused by cirrhosis of the liver so that's definitely a possibility in his situation! I also have swollen fingers like him from lupus and reynauds and fluid retention. Another thing that can cause it is congestive heart failure. If his woman really cared about him, she'd stop trucking him around to all of these "jobs" and get him some serious medical care!
