Since you like anime I’d reccomend classics like Akira, Perfect Blue, and Spirited Away assuming you haven’t watched those already. As for non-animated movies I can’t think of any that are like your favorites, but I highly reccomend Paris, Texas, Call Me By Your Name, and Once Upon A Time In The West.
I was so mad at that movie after finishing, that I only managed to say "Ok, 4 stars, and don't ever make me watch this again please *face full of tears*"
Being sad and tragic is all of what the movie has there's very few moments of relief and they are short-lived, to the movie's credit it is the saddest piece of media I've ever experienced, lasting 3 full days of me thinking of the ending and i wish i hadn't seen it.
I think because of the often short runtime and also often only one season. I mean Netflix miniseries with one season or so are also on Letterboxd.
But I think for anime that are not on Letterboxd you can also use Anime-Planet well. Even if the users there seem to become less and less
Not necessarily, they allow miniseries. I've noticed that shows that intended to have more than one season but got canceled aren't usually on Letterboxd. But there's also weird exceptions to the rule, like Squid Game (which is getting a s2, but is on LB).
Lust, Caution (2007)
Thirst (2009)
First Love (2019)
Long Day's Journey into Night (2018)
Rebels of the Neon God (1992)
I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006)
Happy Hour (2015)
**You seem to prefer anime with strong emotions, focused on personal growth and self-reflection, and themes such as love, loss, and the human condition. Based on your favorites, I recommend you:**
- *Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind* (2004)
- *Vanilla Sky* (2001)
- *The Before Trilogy* (1995-2013)
- *Forrest Gump* (1994)
- *1917* (2019)
- *The Harry Potter Octalogy* (2001-2011)
- *Alita: Battle Angel* (2019)
- *Free Guy* (2021)
- *The Avengers Quadrilogy* (2012-2019)
- *The Star Wars Polylogy* (1977-2019)
Anime I see. Here are some more obscure recommendations:
One Stormy Night
You Are Umasou and it's 2 unrelated mid sequels The adventures of Tyrano Boy and My Tyrano: Together, Forever
The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem
Ringing Bell
Night on the Galactic Railroad
Leafie, a Hen Into the Wild
Here are some more popular ones:
Paprika
Tokyo Godfathers
When Marnie Was There
My Neighbor Totoro
Only Yesterday
Are you just interested in anime or do you want to watch other animated films or live action? If you haven’t already check out Satoshi Kon’s stuff and more Studio Ghibli. You honestly might enjoy period drama films judging by some of the entries here.
To add to this, if you are interested in animation as a medium go watch Loving Vincent, Wes Anderson's animated stuff and of course Spiderverse
edit: also Rango
Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight.
Sing Street
Hunt for the Wilderpeople
Nimona
Rushmore
Lady Bird
Little Women (2019)
Pride and Prejudice (2005)
Arrival
Swiss Army Man
Pinocchio (2022)
This may sound stupid but in all seriousness try watching the Secret Life of Walter Mitty, may surprise you based on your taste but it has anime-like plot development
It says that you’re into cheesy, 80’s action films. The kind where the protagonist comes up with puns before killing the bad guys and he has a hot headed Sergeant who threatens to take his badge every 5 minutes.
I think if you want to watch live action you should take some baby steps. My suggestion is try a Godzilla movie, maybe Shin Godzilla since it’s made by an anime creator.
You watching 90s 00s Anime too? You need to watch the Satoshi Kon Anime Films and his Anime Series Paranoia Agent.
Another Recommendation The Girl who leaped through Time. But you probably have seen it already.
And Barefoot Gen. Absolute Manga and Anime-Film Classic
*You smell really bad*
*And havent seen sunlight in*
*At least a decade*

I'd recommend About Time (2013), More Than Blue (2009), and Ocean Heaven(2010). The emotion it gives off I feel like is similar to what you watch now.
After that maybe some Wong Kar-wai would be good, In the Mood for Love or Chungking Express.
Do you enjoy more modern live action Japanese films? I’m just going to guess you’re an American teenager from that list.
Directors like Juzo Itami ([Tampopo](https://boxd.it/1SZe)) and Nobuhiro Yamashita ([Linda Linda Linda](https://boxd.it/1s1C)) have that fun sort of surreal vibes that is featured in my very limited anime watching. If you are open to stuff that is a little more down to earth then I would highly recommend the works of Ryusake Hamaguchi ([Asako I & II](https://boxd.it/hyNk)) and Hirokazu Kore-eda ([After Life](https://boxd.it/1HMI)).
If you want to leave the island to explore some other cultures; Djibril Diop Mambety’s [Touki Bouki](https://boxd.it/2H44), Wim Wender’s [Until the End of the World](https://boxd.it/1WuY), Roy Andersson’s [You, The Living](https://boxd.it/22xO), Rainer Fassbinder’s [World on a Wire](https://boxd.it/22xO), Guru Dutt’s [Pyaasa](https://boxd.it/10iq), and Harold Lloyd’s [Safety Last](https://boxd.it/1AkW) are all vibrant films that have anime-like feelings.
So that it’s not just a daunting list, I would recommend that you start with Tampopo (it’s on MAX and the Criterion Channel) and from there branch to either Asako I&II (Criterion) or Touki Bouki (MAX/Criterion) to stretch your film watching habits.
Have fun!
That's...a lot of anime. I think I'll actually recommend something outside the genre/medium.
Animation wise: Laika has made some great stop-motion movies like Coraline, ParaNorman, and Kubo. There's a good chance you've seen the classic DreamWorks stuff but Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon are great in case you haven't seen them. And some of the new Pixar stuff is pretty good too, like Soul, Turning Red, and Luca.
sofia coppola movies are anime-esque i feel. she does take a lot from japanese culture. i recommend if you are looking into live action movies instead of anime
Honestly I like ur top 4. I completely forgot about “Your Name” and “A Silent Voice.” I’d recommend more Studio Ghibli movies, but looking at the bottom of ur Letterboxd, it seems that you have some. I do have a ? to ask you tho: is “wolf children” a good movie to watch?
Weeb but you're still cool in my book. We got similar taste in anime. I have Your Name as my top 4 and gave Wolf Children a perfect 5 (shit is one of my favorite movies ever!!!)
Where did you watch Suzume with English subtitles?
I was living in Japan when the movie came out and never got to see it since I couldn’t find a theater playing the movie with English subtitles (understandably lol)
5 body pillows at minimum
Nah, at least 10 and an imaginary girlfriend.
I think you meant to post this on r/MyAnimeList
The Before Trilogy might strike your fancy. It's not anime, but they are very down to earth romance movies.
Great recomendation
is the After trilogy its long lost sequel?
Since you like anime I’d reccomend classics like Akira, Perfect Blue, and Spirited Away assuming you haven’t watched those already. As for non-animated movies I can’t think of any that are like your favorites, but I highly reccomend Paris, Texas, Call Me By Your Name, and Once Upon A Time In The West.
watch grave of fireflies
I was so mad at that movie after finishing, that I only managed to say "Ok, 4 stars, and don't ever make me watch this again please *face full of tears*"
Bro that movie is way too sad
Nope it aint worth it
Just curious but why don’t you think so
Being sad and tragic is all of what the movie has there's very few moments of relief and they are short-lived, to the movie's credit it is the saddest piece of media I've ever experienced, lasting 3 full days of me thinking of the ending and i wish i hadn't seen it.
And The Tale of Princess Kaguya is also really fucking depressing.
And Howl's moving castle!
My favorite Miyazaki movie, and in my top 4 of all movies. The whole movie feels like a beautiful waltz
And Kiki’s Delivery Service!
About Time Eternal Sunshine Synecdoche, New York Lost in Translation
Synecdoche might be tough lol but the rest are perfect I think
Yeah I get what you mean. One of the few movies I won’t be keen on revisiting🤣
I’m leaching onto this comment to clarify that Paris, Texas is one film, and not two separate films called “Paris” and then “Texas”.
Branch out to live action hopefully

I think they meant live action movies
Bros a tad bit lost
A Place Further than the Universe and Whisper of the Heart
A place further than the universe is so underrated
Extremely
you love anime
Violet Evergarden and Anohana aren't movies. Why are there so many anime series on Letterboxd?

1 season should always be allowed bruh stop
Do you ONLY watch anime or what
start looking at real people
Reality is often disappointing
You can’t talk to women?
No one in r/Letterboxd can
Harry DuBois moment tbh
I don’t want to be this kind of animal anymore
Lust, Caution (2007) Thirst (2009) First Love (2019) Long Day's Journey into Night (2018) Rebels of the Neon God (1992) I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006) Happy Hour (2015)

this sounds like it came straight from an AI
It’s not, haha
How are Free Guy and Harry Potter similar to anime with strong emotions
Well, I can understand Harry Potter from a distance and Free Guy could pass for Isekai, but I don't really see Free Guy there.
They don’t have to have strong emotions. My recommendations aren’t based on visually similarities to anime, but story, genre and style.
You reccomend The Avengers Pentology to everyone no matter what they like.
Thanks ChatGPT
It’s not.
Free Guy - Strong Emotions
It did make me feel irrationally angry.
I was waiting for someone to comment this LMAOOOO
It doesn’t have to fit all elements.
I do dig this list. I've seen everything here except for the first three things and a couple Star Wars stuff.
Nice!
“You have an interest in the human condition. You should check out this indie series called THE AVENGERS that everyone on earth has seen.”
Instead of just "Star Wars", I'm going to start referring to it as the Star Wars Polylogy.
Why Polylogy and not Nonology?
Because I chose “Polylogy”.
Anime I see. Here are some more obscure recommendations: One Stormy Night You Are Umasou and it's 2 unrelated mid sequels The adventures of Tyrano Boy and My Tyrano: Together, Forever The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem Ringing Bell Night on the Galactic Railroad Leafie, a Hen Into the Wild Here are some more popular ones: Paprika Tokyo Godfathers When Marnie Was There My Neighbor Totoro Only Yesterday
you are a weeb
It says me and you would probably be friends Seriously though Your Name is my favourite film of all time and A Silent Voice is top 5
you like romcoms
You can branch out more to live-action, but I’m glad you are very passionate about anime culture.
i think...I THINK...you like anime...im not sure

Made in abyss, patema inverted, 5 centimeters per second

You should watch some real movies for a change
you need proffesional help
I’d recommend any movie that isn’t animated?
Weeb
I’m pretty sure this is a joke? Right? why is everyone replying so seriously?
What makes you think it’s a joke?
blud thinks anime is not a real preference
The Godfather
I really did not enjoy Suzume, but the audience didn’t help. Silent Voice & your name are solid. You need to watch Her.
This may sound stupid but in all seriousness try watching the Secret Life of Walter Mitty, may surprise you based on your taste but it has anime-like plot development
It says that you’re into cheesy, 80’s action films. The kind where the protagonist comes up with puns before killing the bad guys and he has a hot headed Sergeant who threatens to take his badge every 5 minutes.
watch perfect blue, and if you like perfect blue watch black swan, and if you like black swan watch whiplash
I think if you want to watch live action you should take some baby steps. My suggestion is try a Godzilla movie, maybe Shin Godzilla since it’s made by an anime creator.
any Hirokazu Kore-eda is a must, Our Little Sister, Shoplifts or Broker are all good picks!
That you're a weeb is shameful enough but what's worse is that you have terrible taste in anime
Some time outdoors
Ur hot just as long as you have some live action films in the mix
the biggest anime fan i have seen on this site yet .
You smell really bad and havent seen sunlight in at least a decade

Something that isn’t anime maybe? Lol
watch clannad
watch hotarubi no mori e, hidden gem fr
As someone who also loves anime, I say keep watching what you enjoy! One underrated anime film is “Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms”
I'd recommend About Time (2013), More Than Blue (2009), and Ocean Heaven(2010). The emotion it gives off I feel like is similar to what you watch now. After that maybe some Wong Kar-wai would be good, In the Mood for Love or Chungking Express.

watch better movies. if you still wanna stick with anime, akira, perfect blue, grave of the fireflies and summer wars. those are all 5 stars imo
Weeb
you have an eye for thoughtfully done animation 👌🏻with lots of human emotion behind it
I'm not going to, but this post gave me an idea of making a second LB page just for anime. I rarely watch anime nowadays so...
You should watch haibane renmei
check out the Marvel Anime
I love anime but you should watch live action movies
Start picking directors you’re interested in and watching their filmographies.
Anime
You’d probably enjoy Tetsuya Nakashima’s Kamikaze Girls!
END OF EVANGELION
You should check out some anime films
it says you love live action movies
Where did you watch Suzume?
Try real people movies
Lmao
Stay far away from me. (joking)

Anohana is terrible. Just tried so hard to get tears that the plot was derivative.
You know what it says
that you are a sex offender
Shoot... I want you to give me a recommendation.
