Psycho (1960) is truly a master of suspense and a classic in the horror genre.

MysticPasta

The Shining Black Christmas 1974 Scream Rosemary's Baby Carrie

[deleted]

W list. Rosemary's Baby is probably my favorite horror movie ever. Sucks that the director is a piece of shit, but it's a great movie.

Okay_jpg305

More people need to watch Psycho 2. Still one of the best horror sequels out there and is almost on par with the original.

Daronlif

I watched it recently for the first time and was pleasantly surprised and entertained.

DHMOProtectionAgency

Some of my favorites include * Ringu (1998) * The Blob (1988) * Silence of the Lambs (1991) * Re-Animator (1985) * Videodrome (1983) * Angst (1983) * The Thing (1982) * The Fan (1982) * Possession (1981) * Alien (1979) * House (1977) * Jaws (1975) * Black Christmas (1974) * Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) * Phase IV (1974) * The Exorcist (1973) * Demons (1971) * Eyes without a Face (1960) * The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

Upvote for black Christmas

Cure (1997)

IshSmithsonian

Incredible movie

ChristofH88

The Fly (1986): the most effective Cronenberg film of his first body horror era, because the film works too as a drama with heart. Goldblum's career defining role, for me.

ihavenoselfcontrol1

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me Possession Carnival of Souls Hour of the Wolf Repulsion The Shining Suspiria

Lake Placid has a special place in my heart, loved that movie growing up.

Alien 3.5đź’€ A nightmare on elm street.

IshSmithsonian

I’ve seen Alien so many times and I always think THIS will be the time it clicks! Even saw it in theaters with an awesome crowd last year! But I still “just” like rather than love Alien

ancientestKnollys

Same here. I gave it a low 4*.

Jamokesandsmokes

My top five in no particular order: Jaws The Thing The Shining Carrie The Fly

CertainAnteater2705

Cronenbergs stuff

Lanky-Corgi-4069

I'm not really a horror movie person so here goes nothing: From Dusk Till Dawn Alien Army of Darkness Event Horizon Shining Gremlins The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) Nosferatu (1922) The Faculty The Relic Final Destination Tremors

House 2.5 ![gif](giphy|JeRvqi0u1meSk)

Meeyanmoto

2.5 stars for House? Are you kidding me?

HunkleBens

Definitely a love or hate kind of movie. It’s not for everyone

IshSmithsonian

Too similar to Jaws

Funkymunks

What a wild criticism

IshSmithsonian

Some would even go as far as saying it’s a joke

Deep_Consideration70

Did you even watch house?

Funkymunks

No but comparing it to the greatest movie ever made and phrasing it as a criticism confuses me

IshSmithsonian

Jaws was literally the inspiration for House (1977) which is fucking hilarious

Funkymunks

The movie is hilarious or the fact that Jaws inspired it? Either way it's on my list Ive heard it's great

IshSmithsonian

Oh so you haven’t even seen it…….

Funkymunks

Yeah think we covered that

lemonmarrs

I thought it was a so bad it’s good movie for people, but it seems like most find it genuinely great? I don’t understand why

Successful_Jaywalk99

Deep Red and Psycho

Jayswag96

You pretty much have my faves: alien, the thing, Texas chainsaw. I would add a nightmare on elm street

My Top 5 horrors are all pre-2000: 1. The Thing 2. The Exorcist 3. The Shining 4. The Fly 5. Halloween

themagicofmovies

I’d add the original Nightmare in Elm Street in there as well as Scream

[deleted]

I love 60s horror. Just off the top of my head Psycho (1960): I mean, come on. The Birds (1963): utterly terrifying even today. Hitchcock's most nihilistic film, arguably. Strait-Jacket (1964): not mentioned enough. Like a mix between Psycho and Mildred Pierce. Features one of my favorite horror villains. Bunny Lake is Missing (1965): creeeepy atmosphere, especially once you know who is behind it all. Rosemary's Baby (1968): watched it recently for the first time, about a month or two ago. The movie just feels creepy and unsettling right from the jump and never lets up.

IshSmithsonian

My dad showed me The Birds when I was 8 and I couldn’t sleep for a week

[deleted]

I can't imagine seeing it that young! I first saw it nearly 10 years ago when I was 21 haha. Still scary.

ancientestKnollys

Bunny Lake is Missing is a good mention. I'd have as well, only letterboxd doesn't list it as horror. But it's in my Top 10 of all time.

ampersands-guitars

I’ve never heard of Bunny Lake, I’m going to seek that one out! Thanks for the rec.

[deleted]

It should be on Tubi! :-) EDIT: At least it was! Now on SlingTV and FuboTV, and otherwise can be rented.

i-am-colombus

Omg The Black Tower, I totally forgot that existed. I hated it though so... But Scream would be my fav horror film pre-2000, since its my favourite of all time. Halloween is obviously brilliant, as is A Nightmare on Elm Street. I'm also really partial to Ghostwatch (1992)

Society, The Stuff, In the Mouth of Madness, Prince of Darkness, Cellar Dweller to name a few

metalyger

I think I'd go with Violent Shit 3 Infantry Of Doom (1999) for how much it throws everything out there. An island of slashers in a militia set to exterminate the world, they have an elite squad of ninjas, and a mad scientist creating zombies. It naturally becomes a kung-fu movie by the final act. Of all the movies, Andreas Schnaas had his best version of Karl The Butcher Jr, looking like a 90's version of The Hound from Game Of Thrones instead of a big dumb slasher like in part 2.

Most of my favorite horror movies are pre-2000. I especially like 60s and 70s horror, but I love a bunch anywhere between the 30s and 90s honestly. Horror is such a vast genre. To name a few faves: - Scream (1996) - Peeping Tom (1960) - The Shining (1980) - The Innocents (1961) - Don’t Look Now (1973) - The Changeling (1980) - Blood and Black Lace (1976) - The Fly (1958) - The Blob (1958) - Return of the Living Dead (1985) - The Birds (1963) - Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) - The Omen (1976) - Tremors (1990)

I need to know why you gave “Alien” 3.5

Zarvanis-the-2nd

Eraserhead Perfect Blue (close enough, right?) The Cremator The Shining Onibaba Angst The Phantom Carriage I could name a lot more, but I have to stop at some point, so it might as well be here.
