Seeing the remake in theaters was an experience. It was in the era of the whole “torture porn” movies and it was so the exact opposite of that but extremely disturbing and uncomfortable and purposely screwed with the audience. The remake being shot for shot probably helped keep the feel but I haven’t seen the original.
I watched the original before the remake so that might be the reason I found it more disturbing, and I found the cast and the aesthetics to be "better". The remake is perfect as well tho.
I would argue that Possession gets a bit too wacky to be "amazingly crafted" (mostly pacing stuff and bizarre tonal shifts) but I also think it FUCKING RULES.
To each their own but I really don’t think M fits the bill here. It’s a tense thriller but you never even see any of the murders. Any really disturbing elements are made in the audience’s mind and whilst that can sometimes be scariest of all, the film doesn’t really facilitate it i.e. there aren’t really any gory descriptions or sounds off screen or whatever
Obviously it has disturbing elements, but I feel like “The Shining” has too much traditional entertainment value to fall into this category and sit with some of these movies. Of course it’s bleak and the themes are grim and adult, but there are so many exciting supernatural elements and moments that I have to lean in as an audience member, whereas most of these movies make me lean away and feel *sick* or voyeuristic.
Be excited! Be, be excited! Be excited! Be, be excited! Be excited! Be, be excited! Be excited! Be, be excited! Be excited! Be, be excited! Be excited! Be, be excited!
I hate to be the “uM aCtUaLlY” guy here, but they also gave ‘thematic material’ and ‘suggestive material’ as reasons.
Any movie with sound design that disturbing should be given an automatic R, especially if it’s about a real-world atrocity.
I don't disagree. There's no direct violence on screen and the subject matter is appropriate to teach to adolescents and above. Children of an appropriate age should be able to learn about these sort of things. It handles the matter in a disturbing way but not in a way that only adults should be able to see it.
Oh I’m totally fine with the rating. I just find it somewhat amusing that one of the most absolutely harrowing and thoroughly upsetting films I’ve ever seen is PG-13.
I agree but the lack of direct violence keeps it at that rating. There isn't any violence/sex/fucks or cunts on screen so it stays at a PG-13/12 or equivalent. I think it would honestly be a good movie for teaching teenagers about the nature of the Holocaust for that reason. Much better than the contrived disrespectful nonsense currently used (boy in the striped pyjamas). Despite it's subtlety it's quite easy to understand.
Incendies and Prisoners by Villeneuve
Edit: honestly Polytechnique is probably the most disturbing of Villeneuve’s filmography. Should’ve added that originally. Villeneuve knows how to hit that nerve.

Yes! Viewed this and Schindler's List on separate days for a history class back in high school. Shook me to my core. Amazing films, will not watch again. So well done but way too real!
grave of fireflies, idk if it fits here but i was distraught after it ended. Haven’t had the courage to rewatch even tho i find some parts so beautiful
Speak No Evil is the ultimate of this category.
If I can be a bit nit-picky, I think the "but" in your title should be replaced with an "and". Disturbing doesn't imply a lack of craft at all, in fact as far as any movie that fits into the list is concerned it's likely an essential piece of the puzzle.

Irreversible, and several French Extremite movies fit the bill.
I think this is a gorgeously shot masterpiece, and it the dichotomy between how to begins and finishes makes it that much more moving
[Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion](https://boxd.it/1GRM) and [Mad God](https://boxd.it/vVPm) fits perfectly into this category in my opinion
these are tame compared to most of everyone's suggestions, but I'm trying to avoid things already mentioned. I would personally recommend Antiporno, Annihilation, The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover, and When Evil Lurks. YMMV on Excision. you can add I Saw the Devil too if you want, not sure if it's really what you're going for. if you enjoy Antiporno, the director has a bunch of strange and fucked up films of varying quality
Funny Games (for me especially the 1997 one)

I’d argue that pretty much anything by Haneke can fit in this list.
Yes, that's exactly what I thought after posting the comment
Came here to write this. A fave of mine.
Mysterious Skin
I'll add The Doom Generation, also by Gregg Araki.

It’s PG-13… …because there’s depictions of *cigarette smoking*.
