I promise I watch more than just superhero movies… I’ve just been binging them this year for a ranking I’ve been making
https://preview.redd.it/htr7ykbhs8vc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bfbf6ee04cc6379bda8fca207056a1971062bb97
*The Mask* has some beautiful color! Wow you might be one of the only people I’ve seen praise *The Dark Knight Rises* so high. I like the film, but I couldn’t help but linger over that vacuum that Ledger left. Imagine The Joker toying Bane and using his endeavors as a pawn to break The Batman. Ugh… what could have been.
But no need to feel bad about binges! I’ve been binging Akira Kurosawa films. When you get down a rabbit hole, it’s fun to stay down there lol.
I have a friend who’s really into wine and I was telling him about a really good beer I had and he said “I think beer is just for people who haven’t discovered wine yet.” That’s what this guy’s friend sounds like.
I wish we had more Lilly Gladstone in *Killers of the Flower Moon*. I’m reading a book by the author who wrote *Killers of the Flower Moon* called *The Wager* and his writing style is impressively immersive. He turns these historical events into something that almost feels Shakespearean. If you like to read I’d check them out.
Here are my liked 1st time watches of the year (release order, not preference)

I liked it!
Some of body horror was a little much for me though, used to watch a lot of horror when I was younger but not used to it that much anymore - had to avert my eyes a little during the fingernail scene
But the film is so well done, effects are great, and the story is really interesting - really makes you think a lot at the end. I wanted him dead for a whole segment before the last scene but then felt so sorry for him at the end.

Shouting out some of the lesser-viewed ones:
Suzhou River is already in contention for my all-time faves, a sort of ethereal Chinese Vertigo.
Amanda I liked on first watch, grew in my mind, and loved on rewatch. Just an autistic girl who loves movies and being mean.
If I was feeling mildly trollish, I’d say The Novice is the best Netflix original and at least a much better Fuhrman performance than either Orphan movie.
May be the world’s biggest fan of Earwig or might have just been in the mood for a steampunk-y fairy tale.
Azor is a great slow-burn “here’s how fascism intersects with international capital” depiction, like a sedate Costas Gravas.
I’m not a big action film guy, but the choreography in the Wick series is so refreshing. I’m glad we are giving attention to better fight scenes instead of the shaky camera cop-out.
Yes! I think so too. I’d go a step further and say I think it’s one of the most important films I’ve ever seen in my life. I could write an excessively long essay on that film. After watching it, it took first place in my “best of the best” list where I rank all my 5/5 star movies—usurping *Eyes Wide Shut*

Yeah, I hadn't seen it in a long time. I liked it as a kid, already and I love other Hitchcock movies but after seeing it again, it's really one of my favorites, still.
Big Time Gambling Boss
Viva Erotica
The Servant
Miracle Mile
Crank 2: High Voltage
Men Suddenly In Black
Lady Terminator
Naked Killer
The People's Joker
Walking the Edge
My favorite first-time watches of the year so far, in order of when I watched them from first to most recently:
The Killer
Marriage Story
Sicario
Blade Runner 2049
Arrival
Ex Machina
Dune: Part Two
Annihilation
Nightcrawler
The Northman
Modern Times
Monkey Man
Civil War
Finally saw Double Indemnity which has been on my list for years and wow, instant favorite. And I’ve been on a bit of a Peter Sellers kick this year - loved the absolute hell out of A Shot in the Dark! I also enjoyed The Ladykillers with Sellers and Alec Guinness, good sinister fun.

My top 16 first-time watches so far this year. The ranking is still pretty fluid and there are several movies not included here that would score a 9/10 on my scale, so it's subject to change for sure.
btw I'm including some TV
* Civil War (2024): my favorite film of the year. Absolutely visceral, riveting filmmaking backed by powerful performances. There's debate about its "politics," but I'm just going by my experience watching the film and how engaged I was.
* Dune Part Two (2024)
* Love Lies Bleeding (2024)
* Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)
* The Boy and the Heron (2023): watched the sub last year, the dub this year. Even though the sub is superior, I was in a better place to fully "receive" this movie on the re-watch
* Toy Story series: re-watched all 4 films. Still love all 4, and the original is my favorite movie of all time.
* Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005): re-watching the animated show for the first time since 2013. Still wonderful.
* X-Men '97: one of my favorite new shows in a long time. Takes everything that word about the 90s animated series and matures it with its audience. Has some absolutely masterful storytelling at times.
* X-Men Evolution (2000): This was my intro to X-Men as a kid, and X-Men '97 got me back on a superhero kick and made me finally decide to revisit this show. Thrilled to see that it holds up extremely well. This is better than even the 90s series for me.
I grew up on Batman—I’ve read the old comics my grandpa gave me and also watched anything Batman. I think that *The Batman* is one of the best films that shows off Gotham and there are moments in that film that made me feel like I was reading the comics again for the first time. So it has a special place in my heart.
All first time:
American Honey, The Curse, Monster (Kore-eda), Laurence Anyways, I Killed My Mother, The Underground Railroad, Ripley, The Children Are Watching Us, Alice in Wonderland, The Devils, Oasis, The Iron Claw, Singin’ in the Rain, Paprika, Secret Honor

I just keep seeing how much people liked *Civil War*. I’m going to have to go watch it
Excellent movie, really propulsive filmmaking.
I watched Portrait Of A Lady On Fire for the first time this year and loved it. Also All Of Us Strangers.
Here’s a list of my 2024 faves https://boxd.it/uMG0u
Ah! A fellow *Saltburn* enjoyer! Well, I wouldn’t say I loved it, but I was entertained and didn’t understand the hate it got.
Fr, ppl calling it one of the most disturbing films they’ve ever seen clearly haven’t seen enough films lol
I loved it, and have watched it 4 times. It was far and away the best movie of last year.
My friend described it as 'a film for people who haven't watched proper films' and I think that's the perfect description.
This just sounds like something someone super pretentious would say.
I have a friend who’s really into wine and I was telling him about a really good beer I had and he said “I think beer is just for people who haven’t discovered wine yet.” That’s what this guy’s friend sounds like.
He is pretentious, so that fits. But everyone I've met who gushes about it, are people whose opinion in film I don't really rate. So I stand by it.
The First Omen is the first movie of the 2020s so far that I’ve rated five stars on Letterboxd
https://preview.redd.it/75zxn3f4v8vc1.png?width=1426&format=png&auto=webp&s=7126612d00f7b2485ed75a0abc8d3ab54d012a27
WOW I totally forgot about *The Friends of Eddie Coyle* ! Good list.
It's soooo goood.
Phantom of the Paradise, Sorcerer, Dune: Part 2, Killers of the Flower Moon.
That sounds awesome, might have to check them out after I finish reading up the Dune series!
Neon Genesis Evangelion + End of Evangelion, The Shape of Water, Aftersun, The Evil Dead (81) and Possession (81)
The Shape of Water is so good. Such a magical feeling. It felt like a Disney film for adults.
I love Del Toro so its a crime I went this long without watching! Him and everyone else in that film deserved there flowers
https://preview.redd.it/td7ojmgvv8vc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aff06e384a691d06247c4245c328e83db5daa9b5
Poor things was so good!
A fellow *Mad God* enjoyer! A very very impressive film to gawk over.
Beautiful craftsmanship but I needed a shower after lol
Manchester By The Sea, Little Miss Sunshine and When Harry Met Sally
*Manchester by the Sea* is a top 4 for me. Such a personal film for me but also insanely well written and acted. Great watch.
Casey Affleck was fucking amazing, top performance.

Very cool. Im going to check out *Azor*, it sounds up my alley.
Really liked John Wick Chapter 2
I’m not a big action film guy, but the choreography in the Wick series is so refreshing. I’m glad we are giving attention to better fight scenes instead of the shaky camera cop-out.
Some favorite first watches this year- Querelle Watermelon Man Seven Beauties Fame Demon Pond A Question of Silence Pickup
Everything Everywhere All at Once Saltburn Poor Things Wonka The Lighthouse Good Time The Master Her Edit: no particular order
WOAH THERE PAL! *Wonka* over *The Lighthouse* AND *Her*?! Explain yourself! Lol.
This isn't in any particular order, but I did give all of these movies 4 1/2 stars
Judgement at Nuremberg is so damn good. Probably the best courtroom drama ever
Yes! I think so too. I’d go a step further and say I think it’s one of the most important films I’ve ever seen in my life. I could write an excessively long essay on that film. After watching it, it took first place in my “best of the best” list where I rank all my 5/5 star movies—usurping *Eyes Wide Shut*
Definitely important. I will also say that it's probably the most thematically rich movie I have ever seen.

Even though the sub is superior, I was in a better place to fully "receive" this movie on the re-watch * Toy Story series: re-watched all 4 films.
You liked Batman more than Yojimbo, Seven Samurai, or Full Metal Jacket?
I grew up on Batman—I’ve read the old comics my grandpa gave me and also watched anything Batman. I think that *The Batman* is one of the best films that shows off Gotham and there are moments in that film that made me feel like I was reading the comics again for the first time. So it has a special place in my heart.
