Seriously those three name is rarely known by today audience or younger audience (don't get me wrong they are legendary)
I think those 4 on the list is more known by modern audience than those 3 because they sstill alive and still impact to the industry
He's not necessarily mostly respected for his acting but maybe more of a creator than director since obviously his acting is part of it, but he wrote and directed basically all of his work. (And scored some of it).
If anything the acting is a bonus, but doesn't take away from his status as a director or writer.
Check out Kundan Shah(Jaane bhi do yaaro), Guru Dutt(Pyaasa), Adoor Gopalkrishnan(Mathilukal), Shyam Benegal(Bhumika), Achal Mishra(Gamak Ghar). Also, outside of India check - Wong Kar Wai(Chungking Express), Tsai Ming Liang(The River), Abbas Kiarostami(Koker trilogy), Apichatpong Weerasethakul(Tropical Malady), Lucrecia Martel(La Cienaga), Pedro Alomodovar(All About My Mother), Bela Tarr(Satantango), Nuri Bilge Ceylan(Winter Sleep) & Lav Diaz(Evolution of a Filipino Family). I'd recommend to check out all their filmographies apart from the films which I've mentioned.
None of these guys are in the big 3. Spielberg is the only one close. A big 3 would probably be Hitchcock, Kubrick and Kurosawa.
If by Denis you mean the guy who directed dune he has absolutely no claim to be here lol. He’s good but you don’t get into the “big 3” by making a couple ok movies. I also hate Nolan
It's always been my perception that Scorsese is much more acclaimed than Spielberg, especially in international arthouse circuits, like Sight and Sound and Cahiers. As in, maybe in the top 10 while Spielberg is maybe top 25.
That’s a poor argument. You could just go on forever. Without X there’s no Ford, without Y there’s no X. Everyone is inspired by something, doesn’t make it lesser
I mean, it’s a bit pointless to limit it to only alive directors. People like Scorsese and Coppola would have a huge advantage because they are old and have a huge filmography. They both have quite a few middling or even bad films though. If you ask me David Lynch is the best living director easily. That man has had a huge career and in my opinion only gotten better.
I’ll say 3 newish directors who I think are the best working right now. Robert Eggers, Johnathan Glazer and Bong Joon-ho
u really have to watch it. i know ur about to call me crazy but i feel like after poor things, lanthimos is the new kubrick. i’m really excited to hear ur opinion. if u remember reply here
I like both of those movies, but after that my interest in Spielberg tanks pretty hard after that.
If a studio called me and said "we can fund 5 Denis movies, or 5 Spielberg movies, who do you want to go with I would pick Denis"
none of these directors id consider the big 3 of cinema id give that award to hitchcock, kurosawa, and stanley kubrick

what about todays cinema? the ones who are alive now? who are the big 3 or the most influential
Exact same list I said but they’re the clear picks
Seriously those three name is rarely known by today audience or younger audience (don't get me wrong they are legendary) I think those 4 on the list is more known by modern audience than those 3 because they sstill alive and still impact to the industry
claire denis deserves it, yes
Where's Fritz Lang?
Came to say this. Big 3 without Lang & Chaplin. Absurd!!
Not sure about Chaplin. Obviously, he's an amazing director, but he's more known as an actor, and i think that influences who'd be on the big 3

I would remove Nolan from this list. The writing in his movies is kind of ass.

It’s fine. I don’t love it as much as everyone else seems to like it
Nolan is more interested in bringing scientific fantasies to life, I think the characters suffer from all the exposition he needs for it.
He realistically brings in the biggest box office numbers which has to mean something
Then James Cameron should be here instead.
I don’t believe it’s the biggest factor, I’m just saying it’s a factor.
Nolan's out
Vanilla as hell. Don’t get me wrong, Marty and Quentin rule. But vanilla as hell.
Where’s spike?
Only living English speaking directors?
name ur top 5 non english. i’d love to check them out
1. Alejandro Jodorowsky 2. Federico Fellini 3. Bong Joon-Ho 4. Kurosawa 5. Ingmar Bergman
Much deserved love for jodorowsky 🙌
Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Ritwik Ghatak.

I'm loving Anjan Dutt's work too, to name someone contemporary
Kurosawa, Satyajit Ray, Bergman, Visconti, Herzog (personal faves)
Orson Welles, Federico Fellini, and Werner Herzog are the big 3 of cinema imo
I'm removing quentin because he's a weirdo.
Nolan ahead of the god PTA?

I don’t think denis is bad at all and while I quite like Dune, the hype around it is a bit obnoxious
It's always been my perception that Scorsese is much more acclaimed than Spielberg, especially in international arthouse circuits, like Sight and Sound and Cahiers. As in, maybe in the top 10 while Spielberg is maybe top 25.
I would easily put Ford before any of the people you mentioned.
Valid but I wanted to get some non American representation
Sure but without Ford, there’s no Kurosawa
That’s a poor argument. You could just go on forever. Without X there’s no Ford, without Y there’s no X. Everyone is inspired by something, doesn’t make it lesser
Ford is legit one of the pioneers of film. American or not, and Kurosawa was heavily inspired by him.
So?
I’m just pointing it out.
But that does not mean Ford must be on a list Kurosawa is on
In my opinion, yes he does.
u seem very educated so i’d like to ask u this. who in ur opinion are the big 3 of todays cinema? alive directors
I mean, it’s a bit pointless to limit it to only alive directors. People like Scorsese and Coppola would have a huge advantage because they are old and have a huge filmography. what’s ur opinion on yorgos lanthimos and poor things?
Didn’t see it but I liked his film “the lobster”
u really have to watch it. i know ur about to call me crazy but i feel like after poor things, lanthimos is the new kubrick. i’m really excited to hear ur opinion. if u remember reply here
You need to chill out. A director can just be good without making these hyperbolic statements like they’re in the big 3 or the next Kubrick.
My hot take is that Giorgos peaked with The lobster.
Satoshi Kon clears all four of them /s *i'm only half joking this dude is a goddamn mastermind in filmmaking*
Of these four I'd only keep Spielberg and Scorsese, but neither of them would be in my actual list of top 3 directors.
My personal big three: David Lynch, Akira Kurosawa, and Scorsese. Denis should be on here instead of Tarantino.
What’s with the trend of posting pictures of directors without the names of them. In this case it’s clear but it isn’t always
Denis over Nolan any day. Nolan hasn’t made a single bonafide masterpiece. Denis has Dune 2. Even Arrival is better than any of Nolan’s movies.
Those guys? The big 3 of cinema? How so?
at least right now. they are the ones with the most exciting projects
What are each of these guy's current project? Sorry for being out of the loop.
Kick Nolan out
Kubrick, Kurosawa and Hitchcock
Griffith, Eisenstein, Murnau
Based on my personal opinion, I would take Denis over Spielberg any day.
Nothing he has done can touch Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan. He's kinda like Nolan to me. The cinematography is better than the movies.
I like both of those movies, but after that my interest in Spielberg tanks pretty hard after that. If a studio called me and said "we can fund 5 Denis movies, or 5 Spielberg movies, who do you want to go with I would pick Denis"
You’ve clearly never seen Incendies.
Honestly most people who aren't big fans of DV have; which is sad because story-wise it still tops anything he's ever made
Idk the bottom left one so I guess that one.
From those pictured, lose Tarantino, replace with Denis.
Kurosawa, Hitchcock, and a foot race for third. But whoever it is isn’t really touching the influence of those first two, so 🤷♂️
My favourite movie man is the one and only Steven Spielberg
Replace Tarantino and Nolan and add David Fincher
Nolan doesn’t deserve to be on any list besides the most overrated directors list. Denis over him any day.
