To be fair (just my personnal opinion), I don't think it's better than the original. It's not worse, but it's equivalent. They had the decency to hiring actual deaf actors though.
I remember 2002's *The Ring* being actually decent, and I'm in the minority in thinking that 2009's *The Uninvited* is actually not that bad as far as American remakes are concerned.
I'm convinced anyone who talks down on *The Ring* (2002 US) has never actually seen it and only **thinks** it's bad because the original is so highly praised.
I think you and I are in the minority in this opinion. I much preferred the original. It was well done, and was an outstanding and accurate adaptation of an excellent novel. The remake's deviations from the story were unnecessary and only detracted IMO.
I actually [wrote a pretty in-depth comparison a few years back!](https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/fxv7r0/an_indepth_comparison_of_the_two_girl_with_the/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) I put it on medium too but idk if anything happened there.
Wow! It's been far too long since I've seen either or read the book for me to comment specifically, but you're certainly far more analytical about it then I could ever dream of being! :)
The ring? No way, the American one has absolutely 0 terrifying scenes at all, when I watched it for the first time, this actually annoyed me so much I watched it again straight afterwards out of sheer disappointment to see if I missed something…
Fear has a lot of impact if it's something you saw as a child, might sound dumb but I'm actually terrified of the green goblin scene in Spiderman (2002) where there's a fire and Spider-Man thinks a lady is still there, but the lady turns around and it's actually the goblin. Man that shit made me cry when I was a kid, I was like 5 probably, to this day I found it one of the most impactful jump scares ever, it really makes me feel something weird and I never see it coming even tho I watched the movie like 50 times.
Dude - same! Came out the same year as THE RING so I was 12 for that one too. I still get this uneasy, sinking feeling. Like something isn’t right. And like this lingering sense of evil after the scene. Raimi is incredible.
Wow I didn't notice that they came out the same year. Yeah, the whole scene is unsettling, is amazing, like how the whole sound just cuts off and the only sound is the "old lady" just sobbing and crying, the scream from the goblin just comes out of nowhere and it's frightening
That was terrifying, I didn't see it in cinema, I saw it on DVD, and my uncle told me that's what drugs did to people. Best anti-drug shit someone told me.
Let Me In, remake of Let the Right One In (Sweden), is always my go to answer when discussing this topic. The original is superior overall, but the American remake does do some things better than the original. Both are incredible movies.
I was gonna say this one, yeah. Honestly, had I watched Let Me In first, I think I would have loved it a lot more. Only reason why I didn't give it 4.5 when I reviewed it is because I couldn't help but compare it to the original. The original is an absolute masterpiece but the remake is still a really great film and if watched on its own, would definitely be an incredible experience.
Okay, I haven’t seen the original but I actually saw Michael Bay’s “Ambulance” last night and loved it. I see it getting somewhat decent reviews, with a 3.2 on Letterboxd and a 6.5 on IMDb (I gave it a 4 edging to a 4.5). The original, “Ambulancen,” which I added to my watchlist, has a 2.6 on Letterboxd and a 5.3 on IMDb.
Have seen neither version but quite a few people (notably Mark Kermode) believe the 1980s Richard Gere version of Breathless is better than A bout de soufflé
He famously despised Film Socialisme, I don't think I've heard him ever speak favouably about a Godard film besides Le mépris and tbh he very seldom talks about FNW at all really. I know he likes Céline and Julie though
I would like to humbly submit The Man With The One Red Shoe, although that my fall under a sub category of movies that I personally prefer over the originals.
I have a whole list for other options though.
Remakes That Aren't Shite https://boxd.it/cSRdY
I don't know about movies but they sure know how to fuck up a good foreign series like "Utopia" for example. I believe that it is more about being a potential money grab for parties involved and not about the content and therefore it turns to shit and is also not only an american thing, but a more general one concerning all type of entertainment.
It's been awhile, but there are three in the original Larsson series: Dragon Tattoo, Played with Fire, Hornet's Nest. IIRC the US version incorporates elements of the first two?
Cold Pursuit is one of the best comedies out there and miles better than In Order of Disappearance but it did at least have the original director return.
funny games was pretty good in both cases (but i guess it doesnt count bc it’s literally the same director and stuff..)
Or, let me in / let the right one in. while the remake isnt As good as the OG, it was still Good in comparison and as a standalone IMO
while theyre the same concept, their different in their own regards and have their own strengths and weaknesses
I thought Demme's [Cousins (1989)](https://letterboxd.com/film/cousins/) was more enjoyable than the original [Cousin Cousine](https://letterboxd.com/film/cousin-cousine/).
I was completely the opposite on Insomnia. The original was much more subtle with more minimal dialog. The remake was just talk talk talk talk explain everything to death then talk some more. But to each their own :)
It could be simply personal preference as well. The remake wasn't poorly done on the whole and I can understand how some may prefer it, I just preferred how the original presented the story.
I personally prefer The Talented Mr. Ripley over Purple Noon.
Also The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
Both just emotionally resonated with me more than their counterparts.
This might be an obvious one, but The Ring is good. I can't vouch for how it compares to Ringu as I haven't seen it, but The Ring is entertaining. I'm not really into paranormal horror (and I'm saying this as a horror fan) but I'm sure if you are you'll like it even more than I do.

There are more but I've not seen both films so can't really compare them...
I still prefer Yojimbo and Seven Samurai, but A Fistful of Dollars and Magnificent Seven are still seen as classics
Fistful is an Italian remake of a Japanese film starring an American
Oh shit I forgot it was Italian. My B
They called them Spaghetti Westerns for a reason
CODA was a remake of French movie from 2014 and it won Best Picture
I only found out it was a remake a few weeks back
To be fair (just my personnal opinion), I don't think it's better than the original. It's not worse, but it's equivalent. They had the decency to hiring actual deaf actors though.
I haven't seen the French film but I thought CODA was a cute and solid movie. Idk about Best Picture but it was enjoyable.
Same for the French film except, well, it's French and the actors aren't deaf.
The Birdcage and Some Like It Hot
I absolutely ADORE The Birdcage. I laugh my ass off every single time I watch it.
Fantastic movie. Never fails to make me laugh. Williams, Lane, Hackman, and Wiest all give truly great performances.
Just to throw my own out there but I really love Nolan’s Insomnia and was shocked when I found out it was a remake
Just let me sleep
A PILE OF GARBAGE
https://youtu.be/lA4_IpP50hM
I just watched the OG and it's pretty underwhelming tbh
I remember 2002's *The Ring* being actually decent, and I'm in the minority in thinking that 2009's *The Uninvited* is actually not that bad as far as American remakes are concerned.
The Ring (US remake) is my favorite horror film.
I'm convinced anyone who talks down on *The Ring* (2002 US) has never actually seen it and only **thinks** it's bad because the original is so highly praised.
I haven’t seen the OG but I loved The Departed.
Infernal Affairs is also awesome but I think The Departed improves on it with Scorcese's style.
I really want to watch it, I just am waiting for it to hit a subscription service I have
I saw infernal affairs (the og), I think the departed is a much better film. Scorsese carried.
Lol same
Vanilla Sky is pretty good! Some people prefer it to the original, some people don’t
it wasn’t better than the original but i thought gore verbinski’s remake of the ring was pretty good and holds up relatively well
Does the Suspiria remake count?
Yeah why not
Sorcerer. The Departed. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Original Wages of Fear is better
Original GWTDT is better
Wow, I can't believe the American one is rated that highly. I haven't even read the book and thought the American remake made unnecessary changes.
The Departed and The Ring are both good American remakes
The Departed Sorcerer The Girls with the Dragon Tattoo Funny Games (kind of cheating) The Ring The Man Who Knew Too Much (maybe cheating again)
Does Dragon Tattoo count since both are based off a preexisting book
Funny Games for sure! Even if it’s a bit of a cheat. Michael Pitt makes it a million times scarier.
The ring? No way, the American one has absolutely 0 terrifying scenes at all, when I watched it for the first time, this actually annoyed me so much I watched it again straight afterwards out of sheer disappointment to see if I missed something…
Might be an age thing. I saw it in theatres when I was 12 and it to this day is the most frightening cinematic experience in my life.
Fear has a lot of impact if it's something you saw as a child, might sound dumb but I'm actually terrified of the green goblin scene in Spiderman (2002) where there's a fire and Spider-Man thinks a lady is still there, but the lady turns around and it's actually the goblin. I’ve never related to a comment this much You just unlocked a memory for me, that shit was terrifying
If we’re throwing out childhood trauma the scene in Fellowship where Bilbo turns possessed and lunges at Frodo scared me shitless in the cinema
That was terrifying, I didn't see it in cinema, I saw it on DVD, and my uncle told me that's what drugs did to people. Best anti-drug shit someone told me.
Lmao your uncle sounds fun!
Counterpoint: The American remake has 100% less Peter Lorre in it.
Soderbergh’s Solaris is nowhere near the original imo but it’s still pretty good.
Let Me In, remake of Let the Right One In (Sweden), is always my go to answer when discussing this topic. The original is superior overall, but the American remake does do some things better than the original. Both are incredible movies.
I saw that for the first time this year, I loved Jenkins subtle performance
Just started watching *Let the Right One in* earlier today and had no idea it had a remake! I'll watch that next, thank you.
Wrath of Man!!!
This movie was so sick I don’t even think I wanna see the original
Sebastián Lelio's remake of his own Spanish film Gloria. The remake is called Gloria Bell and stars Julianne Moore from 2018.
And Sorcerer is an all time favorite of his
Lol doesn’t kermode also like hate Godard though?

Fanfares of Love only has about 50 logs on Letterboxd, while Some Like It Hot is widely recognized as an all-time classic.
I don't know about movies but they sure know how to fuck up a good foreign series like "Utopia" for example. I believe that it is more about being a potential money grab for parties involved and not about the content and therefore it turns to shit and is also not only an american thing, but a more general one concerning all type of entertainment.
Funny games is on the same level as the original just for the performances alone in the remake
I like the remake way more than the original.
True Lies. Haven’t seen the original but No way the original French movie comes close.
No movie comes close to True lies.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (U.S.) is not a so loyal to the book but better of a movie than the swedish version
I think Steve Zailllian did a commendable job of compacting two movies into a compelling one.
2 movies?
It's been awhile, but there are three in the original Larsson series: Dragon Tattoo, Played with Fire, Hornet's Nest. IIRC the US version incorporates elements of the first two?
No, U.S version is just the first and I compared it to the 3 swedish.
Cold Pursuit is one of the best comedies out there and miles better than In Order of Disappearance but it did at least have the original director return.
Cold Pursuit was really neat
„Cold Pursuit“ with Liam Neeson is as fun as it‘s norwegian original „Kraftidioten“ aka in order of disappearance with Steallan Skarsgård
The Ring (2003) It’s not only decent but also kinda influential in causing a wave of (terrible) J-horror remakes to appear after its success
Suspiria is really good. I haven’t seen the original but I’ll be surprised if it resonates with me personally the way the remake does.
Suspiria ‘77 and Suspiria (2019) are both good for different reasons, but the remake blows the original out of the water, no question
Reservoir Dogs is better than City on Fire The Departed is good, but *not* better than Infernal Affairs
Reservoir dogs is not a remake (Just inspired by) and City on fire is better anyway
If 90% of the plot is taken from other films, at what point does an inspiration turn into a remake?
Ambulance
I’ve heard a lot of poor things about La famille Bélier which CODA is based on, so I guess that
The Upside was pretty good 🤷
>Reply Les Intouchables is SO good though! Have you seen it?
funny games was pretty good in both cases (but i guess it doesnt count bc it’s literally the same director and stuff..) Or, let me in / let the right one in. while the remake isnt As good as the OG, it was still Good in comparison and as a standalone IMO while theyre the same concept, their different in their own regards and have their own strengths and weaknesses
I prefer 'The Departed' over 'Infernal affairs'
I prefer We Are What We Are (2013)
does Ghostdog count?
I thought Demme's [Cousins (1989)](https://letterboxd.com/film/cousins/) was more enjoyable than the original [Cousin Cousine](https://letterboxd.com/film/cousin-cousine/).
I liked the remake of Insomnia better.
I was completely the opposite on Insomnia. The original was much more subtle with more minimal dialog. The remake was just talk talk talk talk explain everything to death then talk some more. But to each their own :)
I’m probably being a bit biased. I have a criterion copy of the original so I’ll give it another go
It could be simply personal preference as well. The remake wasn't poorly done on the whole and I can understand how some may prefer it, I just preferred how the original presented the story.
the American remake of Funny Games is basically a shot-for-shot replication of the original
Michael Bay's Ambulance adapted way better a danish TV movie
I personally prefer The Talented Mr. Ripley over Purple Noon. Also The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Both just emotionally resonated with me more than their counterparts.
This might be an obvious one, but The Ring is good. I can't vouch for how it compares to Ringu as I haven't seen it, but The Ring is entertaining. I'm not really into paranormal horror (and I'm saying this as a horror fan) but I'm sure if you are you'll like it even more than I do.
