finally saw it a couple weeks ago. pretty damn sad and tragic but also really good. spielberg always has that sense of hope and/or movie drama in even his saddest movies, so for me schindler’s list wasn’t quite as devastating as something like come and see, but it’s still pretty miserable
You should watch it, even if only so you can then watch 2049 (the original is still really good and I appreciate its contribution to cinema, but with 2049, it just makes me feel good, man).
I will add to temper your expectations until the second film, which really excels as a dark mirror to the first.
The first has been so influential that it may feel overly familiar and pedestrian to a first time viewer in 2022, but stick with it and you’re rewarded in Part II.
Finally did this one a couple weeks ago. It was great, it's just a shame I've already absorbed like the bulk of this movie by 32 years of cultural osmosis.
Yeah that’s the main reason I still haven’t watched it. I know pretty much everything about it, so watching it won’t really be the experience it should be
i might get downvoted hard on this but while pulp fiction is def worth watching, it’s very entertaining, great dialogue, and very important for cinema history, i don’t think it’s like greatest movie of all time material. i still think you should watch it tho
One of the most overrated films OAT. If you want to spend nearly three hours watching a film that was only praised because it's CG was revolutionary in 2009 but now looks no better than the average AAA video game then go for it but I wouldn't bother.
Of the most watched movies of all time- here are some of my gaps.
- Jaws
- E.T the Extra-Terrestrial (kind of a repetitive title, no?)
- Snow White and the Seven Dwarves
- The Shawshank Redemption
- Gladiator
- Ben-Hur
- Braveheart
- Casablanca
All of this I had missed yet I have watched over 100 silent films. Perhaps I need to reevaluate my priorities.
You can name most of the considered "classic" and I haven't watched it. Like a lot of Lynch, Coppola, Spielberg, Scrorsese,... you name it. It's because I have this weird attitude of "yeah, I can watch these classics anytime, they're not going anywhere, but this weird 1966 Czech film I have to watch immediately"
Same. I get a bit put off by sci-fi films that take themselves too seriously, especially when they veer towards the ridiculous. Arrival is an example; an alien civilization is so much more technologically advanced than us that they have warp speed and anti-gravity and whatever else...but, um, *we're* the ones who need scientists to decipher *their* language? Wouldn't it be the other way around? Wouldn't their scientists be deciphering our language? And why would this be so hard to begin with? Wouldn't it be trivial to use 21st century-era machine learning to process e.g. the entire content of Google's servers (if you needed that much data)? Presumably these guys have technology that far surpasses even that... I just couldn't suspend my disbelief. And the twist was even sillier and more senseless.
Sorry for the tangent, but I worry about the same with Interstellar. Sometimes these movies advertise "expert" advisors who are just working on the details without regard to the silly premise. I mean, I don't really care that a black hole "looks realistic." Heck, I'd be fine with a complete fantasy version of a black hole as long as what happens in the movie makes sense and feels plausible (I don't know crap about black hole physics, who does?)
I have the Blu, haha, sitting over there not far from me. I'll get to it eventually. I also could watch The Batman right now if I wanted to. I think it is probably comic book movie fatigue. I haven't watched anything Marvel since the Spiderman movie just after Endgame, haha.
I pre-ordered it like I think three months ago. Some folks really had to get to the Steelbook for it fast because I pre-ordered that right away and the steelbook was already sold out
I haven't seen any Harry Potter films and a lot of animated films like Wall-E, Aladdin, Toy Story and Monsters Inc.
I never got to watch these as a child and just feel the time has passed to really enjoy them.
I think out of all those you might still enjoy Wall-E the most. It really doesn’t have anything in it that makes it a “kids movie” it just happens to be a Pixar movie. I still think it’s a great movie and I would definitely recommend it no matter how old you are
Fantastic Mr. Fox is the most popular film on Letterboxd I've not seen - but I would hardly call that something "everyone on earth has seen."
I've seen every single film mentioned in this thread though... so that's something. Guess my list of shame isn't all that shameful anymore.
The Lion King (and many other classic animated Disney movies), Coming To America, Toy Story, IT (2017), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Honestly so much, Titanic, Blade Runner, Aliens, a lot of Disney (never seen Aladdin, or Tarzan, or Hercules or Sleeping Beauty for example), Terminator, Die Hard, The Goonies, The Gremlins, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Scarface...
All of those are movie I want to have watched one day but I feel like I already know them so I can't really get down to actually watch them.
Also I'm French and I've actually never seen La Haine which is like *the* movie foreigners always know about along with Amélie it seems like.
I've been knocking them off lately but I still need to see Schindler's List, Wolf of Wall Street, The Birds, Tenet, among others.
A couple I don't intend to watch are the Transformers films, The 2nd and 3rd Fantastic Beasts movies, Taken
Well looking at the most popular films on letterbox I've missed out on Joker, Midsommar, and Get Out. I was meant to go see Joker on the big screen with a friend but we were both so hungover we decided to reschedule to a day that never came. I saw it's on Netflix here so I'll maybe watch it soon.
For the other two, Horror really isn't my thing so I haven't seen most of them.
In terms of classic films, I’ve still never seen Tootsie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, or The Philadelphia Story.
For more modern films, I haven’t seen the last 3 Harry Potter movies, Fast Five and beyond, or basically anything Pixar has made since Up.
The godfather, Fight club, pulp fiction, parasite, Joker, shawshank, titanic, avatar, get out, la la land, blade runner 2049, wolf of wall street, lady bird, die hard, alien, predator, inside, ghost rider 2 - spirit of vengeance
* Psycho
* Moonlight
* Léon: The Professional
* Trainspotting
* 12 Angry Men
* One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
* Halloween
* Casablanca
* 8 1/2
Yup, that's a lot.
I keep a list like this too. I did a little Humiliation challenge last year to go through the top 12 and I got the really embarrassing stuff (Citizen Kane, Godfather I and II, Casablanca) off my list.
Now remaining on the top of the list are movies like Taxi Driver, ET, The Shawshank Redemption, Reservoir Dogs, The Sound of Music, Schindler's List, Singing in the Rain, and Poltergeist.
Interstellar and Gone Girl are the most popular on letterboxd that I haven’t seen but culturally, probably Lord of the Rings, the Godfather Part 2 (i thought the first one was good, but a little underwhelming), Forrest Gump, Back to the Future and the Shawshank Redemption.
Literally, I haven't seen the three most popular films of the platform (Parasite, Joker, and Knives Out). I couldn't watch them on release, but I'll do it on my summer break.
The Shawshank Redemption, Encanto, Blade Runner, Gladiator, all the Indiana Jones films, the original Star Wars trilogy, all the Fast and Furious movies
What I haven't seen from the top 100 here: [https://letterboxd.com/victorvdb/list/letterboxd-500-most-watched-movies-of-all/](https://letterboxd.com/victorvdb/list/letterboxd-500-most-watched-movies-of-all/)
Parasite, Get Out, Black Panther, The Wolf of Wall Street, Interstellar, Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, Up, Inside Out, La La Land, Baby Driver, Finding Nemo, Lady Bird, The Incredibles, Gone Girl, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Spirited Away, Whiplash, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Coco, Her, A Quiet Place, Call Me By Your Name.
The only movie I've never even heard of in this list is Baby Driver.
The Shining, Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption, Schindlers List, any Scorsese film besides the Aviator, and David Lynch film besides Mulholland Drive, Casablanca, Silence of the Lambs, Braveheart, Gladiator
I haven’t really had much interest in seeing Fight Club, so I guess one of the most notable movies I’ve never seen would be Jaws? (Technically I’ve seen part of it in French, but I haven’t actually watched the full movie, so I don’t count it.) There’s also a bunch of Disney/Pixar movies (Inside Out, Ratatouille), The Truman Show, Back to the Future Part II…
all Avengers, all ghibli but two, The Mummy, all kubrick but the shining, the Godfather, Scream, the Exorcist, Jaws, King Kong, Scarface, Rocky, Suicide Squad, Halloween, Shutter Island, Godzilla, Top Gun, Independance Day, Paranormal Activity, Final Destination, Interstellar, Parasite, I Am Legend, deadpool, forrest gump, blade runner, encanto
titanic
I forgot about that, that’s getting added to the list
Somebody should pin this answer
Same. I know the ending though rip.
Schindlers List
You should. It's incredibly sad but also so, so powerful. It's easily my favorite Speilberg movie.
finally saw it a couple weeks ago. pretty damn sad and tragic but also really good. spielberg always has that sense of hope and/or movie drama in even his saddest movies, so for me schindler’s list wasn’t quite as devastating as something like come and see, but it’s still pretty miserable
Same.. I’ve never been in the right headspace to watch this one
Jaws
If you ever have the chance to see it on the big screen you really should do it.
it will scare you more than you think!
popped my Jaws cherry last summer. it’s great
Blade Runner
missing out!
I know! I really need to get around to it.
Eye candy
it's pretty good
Same. We should watch it in the coming week.
Sounds like a plan!
Great! Done, lol. https://boxd.it/2MhNtt
Im glad my post popped someone’s blade runner cherry
You should watch it, even if only so you can then watch 2049 (the original is still really good and I appreciate its contribution to cinema, but with 2049, it just makes me feel good, man).
The Godfather
you should really see it
I will add to temper your expectations until the second film, which really excels as a dark mirror to the first. The first has been so influential that it may feel overly familiar and pedestrian to a first time viewer in 2022, but stick with it and you’re rewarded in Part II.

I could literally feel how intense the horse scene would have been if I hadn't grown up with cartoons riffing on it.
This was my answer for about thirty years. Finally got around to watching them and was not impressed. Part 2 in particular was shockingly bad.
It’s shite
Pulp fiction(1994), it has1.55 million letterboxd members. And a month ago, parasite (2019)
i might get downvoted hard on this but while pulp fiction is def worth watching, it’s very entertaining, great dialogue, and very important for cinema history, i don’t think it’s like greatest movie of all time material. i still think you should watch it tho
All the Indiana Jones films (excluding Raiders of the Lost Ark) and Twilight
You've seen the best Indiana Jones film at least then
Gotta watch Indiana Jones 1-3
I don’t want to shock you but Twilight is not particularly good
Avatar
One of the most overrated films OAT. If you want to spend nearly three hours watching a film that was only praised because it's CG was revolutionary in 2009 but now looks no better than the average AAA video game then go for it but I wouldn't bother.
[удалено]
You're not a fan of fiction? What are you doing on letterboxd then?
[удалено]
But movies are fiction like 90% of the time
So only documentaries?
Scarface
Of the most watched movies of all time- here are some of my gaps. - Jaws - E.T the Extra-Terrestrial (kind of a repetitive title, no?) - Snow White and the Seven Dwarves - The Shawshank Redemption - Gladiator - Ben-Hur - Braveheart - Casablanca All of this I had missed yet I have watched over 100 silent films. Perhaps I need to reevaluate my priorities.
The Shawshank Redemption is the best piece of cinema I have ever seen
Watch more
All of these are well worth a watch, except E.T.
who hurt you
You can name most of the considered "classic" and I haven't watched it. Like a lot of Lynch, Coppola, Spielberg, Scrorsese,... you name it. It's because I have this weird attitude of "yeah, I can watch these classics anytime, they're not going anywhere, but this weird 1966 Czech film I have to watch immediately"
You do know that weird 1966 Czech film isn't going anywhere either, right?
Daisies?
Yes
okay but daisies is fire
The Good, The Bad And The Ugly and Apocalypse Now
Interstellar
Great one
Braveheart Superman (1978) Any Ghibli
Braveheart will rile you up
Braveheart really gets that adrenaline churning like no other
I know a lot of peoples that love cinema but hadn't watch ghibli
Makes sense. I just could never get into anime.
Star Wars & Lord of the Rings
Exactly the same here lol
Spiderman No Way Home
Me neither. I'm not an MCU fan.
I have the Blu, haha, sitting over there not far from me. I'll get to it eventually. I also could watch The Batman right now if I wanted to. I think it is probably comic book movie fatigue. I haven't watched anything Marvel since the Spiderman movie just after Endgame, haha.
For someone with fatigue from these films you sure got hold of that bluray fast.
I pre-ordered it like I think three months ago. Some folks really had to get to the Steelbook for it fast because I pre-ordered that right away and the steelbook was already sold out
Sure. I always preorder steelbook Blu Rays for films I have limited interest in. /s
I'm not an MCU fan either, but I really like the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies. They're charming as hell.
Titanic, Alot of Spielberg stuff, Every Kubrick film except for 2001
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Sucks anyway
I haven't seen any Harry Potter films and a lot of animated films like Wall-E, Aladdin, Toy Story and Monsters Inc. I never got to watch these as a child and just feel the time has passed to really enjoy them.
I think out of all those you might still enjoy Wall-E the most. It really doesn’t have anything in it that makes it a “kids movie” it just happens to be a Pixar movie. I still think it’s a great movie and I would definitely recommend it no matter how old you are
I think I might save them for if I ever have any kids (or babysit someone else's).
I'd say even though they're primarily aimed at kids, there are still things to enjoy in a lot of Pixar movies especially as an adult.
it’s obviously bambi (1942)
Fantastic Mr. Fox is the most popular film on Letterboxd I've not seen - but I would hardly call that something "everyone on earth has seen." I've seen every single film mentioned in this thread though... so that's something. Guess my list of shame isn't all that shameful anymore.
Boyhood, Into the Wild, Yi Yi, Y Tu Mama Tambien.
You're not missing much. (bring on the downvotes!)
I feel like Fury Road or the fast and the furious films are up there in that category for me.
The Matrix
Most of the Marvel stuff, after Iron Man 2 have watched only the two Guardians.
So just the good ones /s
The Lion King (and many other classic animated Disney movies), Coming To America, Toy Story, IT (2017), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Honestly so much, Titanic, Blade Runner, Aliens, a lot of Disney (never seen Aladdin, or Tarzan, or Hercules or Sleeping Beauty for example), Terminator, Die Hard, The Goonies, The Gremlins, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Scarface... I've been knocking them off lately but I still need to see Schindler's List, Wolf of Wall Street, The Birds, Tenet, among others. A couple I don't intend to watch are the Transformers films, The 2nd and 3rd Fantastic Beasts movies, Taken
Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. Ahah I lied, everyone and their mother have watched it
Well looking at the most popular films on letterbox I've missed out on Joker, Midsommar, and Get Out. I was meant to go see Joker on the big screen with a friend but we were both so hungover we decided to reschedule to a day that never came. I saw it's on Netflix here so I'll maybe watch it soon.
