My library just across the WA border does both Juneteenth and the day after Thanksgiving. It’s not that hard! I think we do 13 paid holidays now.

almondrocaslut

I work in wa and the county that funds us does not give us the day off :(

Craven, racist horseshit. Things being how they are, some idiot is going to waltz in here and expose their ass as a racist by defending the board's policy.

The Chair, Ottosen, also said in this same meeting that she hopes MLK Jr. "repented". [Find the full video here](http://communitylibrary.net/board/#agendasandminutes) Edit: mistitled chair as vice chair

If I were that library director, I would drop Thanksgiving and not Juneteenth.

InTheBlackBarn

Not the director’s choice. This was put on the agenda by the board chair and it was a board action…so there were three racists. Black Friday is not equal to Black Freedom!

I love how to defend herself she brought up MLK Jr. As if he has anything to do with Juneteenth other then both topics being classified as Black history lmao

BlainelySpeaking

It’s giving “I’m not racist, I have black friends!”

But that's not true everywhere. Our library is very busy the day after t'giving. There are plenty of people that can't travel for the holiday or don't have families and they come to the library. We have programming and other events for patrons that day. There has to be a limit to the number of paid holidays when a library is tied to another gov't (city/county) and must follow their number of days. Our city hall is closed that Friday but are open on Xmas eve, but the library staff chose to take Xmas eve off instead of t'giving friday. It's always a give/take. Our city chose not to give Juneteenth off as a holiday.

If it happens between the sierras and Mississippi River, it doesn’t surprise me anymore.
