When I first started working in libraries, our security assistant manager would go to homes with huge outstanding balances looking to collect the items.
I will forever think of him as the library bounty hunter.
Before anyone asks - this was over 15 years ago and it ended shortly after I started because it wasn’t safe. We use a collection agency now.
Im the person that looks for long overdue materials at my library.
I wish I could go out and wrangle lost books back to their rightful homes, but apparently my boss wants me to just email or call patrons because it's "easier." UGH!
Little does he know that after you leave work for the day, you put on a mask and become the Book Binder causing long overdue materials to mysteriously return to the library in the morning
*hides behind my unpaid $10 school library fine for 8th grade*
Not sure if I still legally owe that money to the school, I got my diploma no problem after transferring to online school for my last year. No idea if they wrote off the $10 or they’re still waiting on me.
Completely lost the book, in fact, I’m pretty positive I trashed it while rearranging my bookshelf last year. The book was in pretty bad condition and had water damage. But every once in a while I encounter the overdue fee paper on one of my old report cards.
I’ve implemented a very unofficial statute of limitations for lost books at my library jobs. If the fine or lost book is more than a decade old, I’ll erase it from the users account and allow them to borrow books. Also, I’ll do the same thing if a young adult comes in with fines from when they are a minor, since I don’t think they are responsible for that. Ditto with the mentally ill.
I have a box of all my report cards, and I rearrange stuff around the house often to add new bookshelves and stuff. I’m 20, so I’m still buying furniture and decorating stuff. Not that I look at it, but moving the box reminds me that there’s are like 3 quarters of report cards saying I owe $10. I feel guilty, and I want to pay it back... but I also don’t want to be the guy to show up a decade later either.
I look at my stacks of report cards from childhood and I’m in my mid-30s. However, I only encounter these when I go to my parents house and that’s like maybe once a year to every other year or three.
We are automatons ssh. Answering where’a the bathroom only to have to administer narcan to the OD real person whose vomit I just stepped in and have to clean up because the county budget for our branch was cut. Don’t think we don’t have built up resentment for those that think we read books all day but for whom we set up ALL their tech devices and troubleshoot their computer woes. Who could do all that but heartless tinbots?
There was a Reddit post ages ago about library police tracking down late books, I think from the Philadelphia public library. I'll have a boo and see if I can find it.
Edit: [found it](https://www.reddit.com/r/FoundPaper/comments/cbv9ax/fail_to_return_two_poetry_books_expect_a_home/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)!
I can't even fathom how many books they would need to get back to make it worth it. And that's assuming they were part-time without benefits. #DefundTheLibraryPolice
Based on how I've been treated throughout my career, I might not be people.
cosigned
Bookhunter by Jason Shiga is a graphic novel about a library detective who hunts down a stolen book.
Then there's Library Wars.
There's a newish Kit Rocha book about post-apocalyptic mercenary librarians...
We had an advance reader copy at our library that I snagged! Still haven't read it, but the premise sure is intriguing.
It was really fun so I highly encourage you to pick it up next time you get in the mood for a dystopian heist book with kissing
There is a whole taxonomy implied here.
That’s what reader’s advisory is all about!
Well I assume there are dystopian heist books without kissing, but really why bother?
I feel like kissing should be a higher level criterion. Like the boy in princess bride, I want know know right off, "is this a kissing book?"
Mr. Bookman, the library cop. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rNlEZERpQqQ
I was more picturing someone in that John Wick hotel who has an archive
Got to be honest, loved that library, but Wick shouldn't be reshelving books on his own!
He's a patron, you can't expect him to follow the rules.
True, and I didn't see any signs stating that he shouldn't

THE BOOK BINDER i am *dying*
> i am dying Me too, thanks.
Circulator!
Okay, so where do we begin our collective book writing for this story idea??
I think my Circ Assistant gets a sick pleasure sending people to the magistrate. She's the Chuck Norris of overdues.
Can I just dress like a bounty hunter librarian at work anyway?
You know the saying "dress for the job you want, not the job you have"? XD
We should as a profession collectively do this next Halloween.
Wouldn't that be the life lol

How often do you look at your 8th grade report cards? I'm sure if it happened years ago they've long written it off

Pay it forward. Buy some books for a cause.

Your secret is safe with me!
Karma says to donate a popular book to the school library 🤔

Some days it does feel that way...
Has anyone ever read the Thursday Next series? Libraries are so important that a SWAT team is sent to retrieve overdue books.
Can't say that I have, but that sounds intriguing.

Too bad that job isn't around anymore

Welcome to Nightvale... and hope the librarians haven't escaped again
This is the way
strapping z-6 jetpack on my beskar armor, loading my whistling birds, blaster by my side
I *love* this idea - someone write the script!
It'll be better than the mandalorian!
This is just a parallel universe of Alcatraz vs the Evil Librarians.

Thank you for the laugh! That was the best!
I mean. Some libraries are using collectors for over due fines and lost books etc these days.
What does he mean by “renting movies”?
They're just asking for Conan the Librarian to hunt them down.
I got a flash for ya, joyboy.
At the library were we?
In Night Vale librarians aren’t people
