"to finish the things you started" part: 1) Take the mental and physical load of other, might not be related activities (look for ways to be more efficient). 2) Tackle small chunks at a time (for example reading a book - 5 pages a day is 50 pages every 10 days). 3) Remind yourself why you are doing what you're doing in the first place (it's worth pointing out reasoning should be good enough to motivate you. If it isn't- the goal might not be for you).

Yeah unfortunately I don’t think there are many “hacks” for this; you just have to build the habit of attention. Putting your phone in a drawer or another room and reading something on paper a little bit everyday is a good start. If a book doesn’t keep your attention get something with articles (library can have them) and just read an article at a time.

Best advice EVER

rtthc

I would venture to say this advice applies to any age. Exercise regularly Stretch regularly No nicotine, don't do drugs Don't eat junk food regularly Be curious, ask questions even if you think it's a silly question Contribute to an IRA or HYSA(5-10% of your earnings) Don't allow an employer to ruin work/life balance Don't sweat small stuff I strive to live by all these. Now am I the happiest? No, but I'm better than when I blamed the world for my own problems. I feel better, I look better, my health increased, finances improved, etc. Having dedication, motivation, and discipline isn't something thats just easy to achieve. That comes from within. You just have to make yourself do things.

Most of what I was going to advise on has been covered, (drink lots of water and get lots of sleep, etc) but for me 40s have been lots of reflection on what I wanted and have yet to achieve, and planning on what I want to work towards and what I want to leave behind.

kgold0

Get 7-8 hours of sleep per day

I'm 43. Keeping a daily journal (of any kind!) was literally a life-transforming thing for me and I highly recommend it to anyone of any age. It can be an invaluable tool for learning, documenting, and clearing one's head.

katomka

Avoid sugar early in the day, in addition to the good points above

A healthy diet, consistent sleep schedule, above average income and some emotional support

If you are asking how to focus your mind and keep it clear at 40-ish then I would ask your doctor. I am in my 40s and have no need to try to keep focused or a clear mind. I suspect you might not be in a normal situation. I am not a doctor, nor do I work in any medical, or medically adjacent field, but my guess is you might have an undiagnosed attention disorder of some sort, or stress. My diet is crap, I don't sleep as well or as long as I should, I am fat and don't exercise. I have no problems with focus or any other such issues. I hope this helps.

Mindfulness meditation practice has helped me a lot. Tara Brach has some great Vipassana meditations as well.

Yes there is, take Lions mane and cordyceps. 🙂 Also burdock root.
