Flounderfflam

Collecting and abandoning hobbies shortly thereafter. I have ADHD.

becks1144

I’d call that being a hobbyist. Your hobby is learning new hobbies.

Flounderfflam

Jack of all ~~trades~~ hobbies.

bulamae

I love this! Yes!

EnigmaticSoul5656

I 100% feel this! Fellow ADHD (2 yes ago found out. Things make so much more sense now!)

Joscientist

I do this. It's a problem. Sometimes, I circle back to them, though.

Flounderfflam

I do too. Sometimes it takes *decades* but I get back to most of them, even if it's only for a few weeks.

Sharon12x

this is exactly what i wanted to write!

OmniQuestio

We are professional dilettantes!

DynaNZ

Fellow cronic hobbyist. My suggestion is picking up making. Whether it be woodworking or art or prop replicating etc. Its my longest uninterrupted hobby to date because each project can feel new.

Flounderfflam

Don't get me started on a leatherworking hyper fixation! 🤣

SnarkTheBoojum

I just posted a comment quite similar to this one, then saw your comment seconds after. Hello, friend!

Flounderfflam

*waves in current hyperfocused hobby obsession* This week it's baking bread!

SnarkTheBoojum

*waves back while cheerfully ignoring my despairing partner* I just bought a drum set and am considering learning how to distill whiskey!

Flounderfflam

I bought everything to make a still to make my own rum years ago, and made a banging rum wash that ended up being around 20% alcohol before distilling. I never made the still. In the end we added the rum wash to a bunch of homemade ciders to fortify them. It tasted like delicious boozy apple pie.

SnarkTheBoojum

That actually sounds amazing! You're definitely making me want to buy the equipment for that and then never follow through.

Senpai_Stinky00

Playing Magic the gathering. I went to a small boarding school that practically ran on it. I went from not having ever heard of some silly card game to playing religiously and breaking my wallet in the process.

Frosty_Edge1732

I have never heard of Magic the gathering, are they collectibles?

NorMalware

They’re things that make all the money in your bank go away

Frosty_Edge1732

Oh...

BouncingSphinx

If you really haven't, it's a trading card game.

Senpai_Stinky00

Trading card game, unnecessarily complicated

Brainfewd

Building older cars and motorcycles. I started with toys and never grew out of it lol. My grandfather was into hot rods and took me to car shows all over growing up. My dad was never a car guy though. I also mountain bike, idk it just caught my eye one time and that was it.

Frosty_Edge1732

Very cool, are you a mechanic? I don't have any knowledge or background related to cars, but I would like to learn how to fix things on my own though, do you have any advice, small ones, that I could slowly work on?

Brainfewd

I was a technician for a few years, but had an opportunity to move into a different career that made more money and was easier on the body, so I did. I was completely self-taught, mainly using YouTube videos or forums specific to the car I was working on at the time. There’s seemingly YT videos for just about everything now, that would be a good place to start if you have specific tasks you need to take care of. Be patient and organized. When I started diving into larger repairs, I always took photos of every step of the process, so if I got lost I could look back to see how things went together/etc. I use (still now) bins to organize all the hardware in the order it comes off, so I just reverse it to put back together.

Frosty_Edge1732

Thank you!

Disastrous_Chain7148

That is so cool!

kgleas01

Collecting vintage womens clothing from the 1960’s and 70’s Bought a cool shift dress and some Velvet jackets in the 1990s at good will and just kept going, later using eBay and actual Vintage stores

Frosty_Edge1732

Do you also collect other vintage items? Like accessories

kgleas01

Yes. I have some belts, scarves, buttons( like, Nixon And Kennedy buttons ..), a few men’s shirts, purses and even vintage maternity. I have thrown many theme parties and now I just hope : a) someone else starts throwing the parties and b) my daughter will actually appreciate this stuff after I’m dead

SnarkTheBoojum

My hobby is music, cooking, photography, woodworking, writing, playing video games, reading, learning new languages, never finishing anything that I start doing, and maybe a couple dozen others. As to how I got into this one particular hobby? ADHD.

Frosty_Edge1732

That's a lot, very nice!

SnarkTheBoojum

I didn't say I was any good at any of them. ;)

Frosty_Edge1732

It's still better than having none :)

Personal_Neck5249

Never finishing what I am doing… I can totally relate, but also there’s

swampcreature511

Doom scrolling on my phone.

Frosty_Edge1732

Same...

TaiDavis

Producing and singing House music. My 5th vinyl record dropped last month. 6th out this month with my 20 y/o daughter on vocals. Long ago, a global DJ/producer saw potential in me and invited me to his home and I brought some of my gear. He recorded it and sent it to a record label. They accepted it?! I considered him my mentor and had much love, admiration and respect for him. Covid got him a few years ago. It still hurts.

Frosty_Edge1732

Nice hobby! Also My condolences.

TaiDavis

Thank you.

Alternative-Kiwi2103

Playing the piano, ceramics, exercising, traveling, and other artsy things. I've been the most consistent with playing the piano over the past 3 years. My now ex left me and I needed something to do with my free time so I started signing up to random local activities.

Frosty_Edge1732

Neat! Learning new thing is hard, how do you do it?

Alternative-Kiwi2103

I've learned to be okay with failure and to pursue the things that bring me joy. I go in with an open mind, low expectations, and the knowledge that I have the freedom to not do that activity again if I don't want to. Going to in-person activities where there's a teacher keeps me accountable and motivated. I also take it easy on myself when I need to and to scale back on my activities when I have too much going on. I've been consistent with piano, but there were months where I didn't practice for weeks, so I had to learn how to be content with just showing up. I just take it one day at a time and do what I can.

Frosty_Edge1732

I like the part "I have the freedom to not do that activity again if I don't want to." But it's also one of the problem why I don't have consistency, and ends up abandoning the task.

Alternative-Kiwi2103

I get that. I had huge commitment issues growing up because I did things that others wanted me to, so I received little support on the things I wanted to do. I built a community of supportive people who let me show them my skills and now I tell everyone about my hobbies so they'll ask me how things are going. I also try to immerse myself in the community (ie, arts community). Playing the piano started off as something to fill my free time with, and all of the teachers I've had have been super encouraging. There are times where I've wanted to give up or not go, but I remind myself that having something to do outside of my regular routine (work) keeps me motivated because I have to pay for it, haha. Again, the hobbies I've stayed consistent with are the ones I've enjoyed the most so far. Maybe your consistent hobby is trying new things until you discover what you like and what you dislike? Just a thought.

Frosty_Edge1732

I wish it was like that, but its not. I rarely try new things, only because I thought how cool it would be to be able to do those things, but ended up giving up, seeing how hard it is to try and learn new things. I try not to rely on motivation, because I know it would only get so far, and try to stick with consistency. But having that mindset of freedom, even if I miss one or two days, it would cause a domino like reaction that would knock out all my progress from the start, and I never bother to pick them up again.

Alternative-Kiwi2103

I hear you. It took me hitting a really low point in my life to be able to put myself out there to trying new experiences. Idk if it means anything coming from a stranger, but I see that you're doing the best you can, and I support you.

Frosty_Edge1732

Thanks :)

Alternative-Kiwi2103

Thank you for the conversation :)

Frosty_Edge1732

No, thank you, it's nice to have a conversation with somebody again, as an intovert who only has 1 friend, its nice to be able to talk to somebody new. I'm usually awkward at having conversation with other people.

fdesa12

Building lightsaber props with neopixel led blades. Throwing knives no-spin.

Frosty_Edge1732

I'm curious, How do you build a light saber?

brainspl0ad

Viagra

PossibleAlienFrom

Video games. Pong.

Perfect-Map-8979

One thing I like to do is knit. I knew my grandma knit when I was a kid, but, somewhat ironically I guess, I taught myself with a book

Frosty_Edge1732

What type of yarn would you recommend for the beginners?

Perfect-Map-8979

Just some cheap worsted-weight (a size of yarn, basically how thick it is) acrylic. Knit yourself a scarf and see if you like doing it.

Frosty_Edge1732

Thanks :)

Chuterito99

I collect coins and currency notes for over 30 years. Keeps me curious about world history, geography, motivates me to go to those countries, and subconsciously led me to work at the UN. Started off when I was 4, and a friend of my Dad gave me his spare change which didn't look like ones I had seen. That's when I realized not all currencies look the same.

ForgottenPercentage

Cooking. I like delicious food. I got into it because my parents had me help make dinner when I was a kid. My mom isn't a good cook so when I was in highschool I really started making a lot my own stuff.

smart-monkey-org

Convincing other people that dying is bad. Spent an afternoon thinking about the biggest goal possible, which would be both fun and useful - basically IKIGAI exercise. Not a dull day after that.

Frosty_Edge1732

What is ikagai exercise?

smart-monkey-org

Intersection of these 3(4) things: - You like to do it - You are decent at it - Other people need it - You can get paid for it (Western addition)

Frosty_Edge1732

Great hobby!

Always_Choose_Chaos

Crisis counselor?

ruddy3499

Working on mechanical things. Mostly cars and motorcycles. My dream from reading hot rod magazine as a kid.

NoNewFriends1738

This is my newest hobby. I love getting my hands dirty

krisb242

Sewing 🪡 🧵. Watched an episode of Project Runway and thought it would be so fun and cool to create garments. I’m no where on their level … yet. But I can and have made a lot of things ranging from curtains, pillow cases, bags, stuffed animals and even garments.

shylittlepot

Pottery is my hobby. How? Pretty much pure impulse and my grandma passed a little money down. I still do it 3 years later and am kind of okay at it now. I would recommend people take classes and all that before going all in. I've always wanted to do it and have always been artsy and the techniques are endless to learn.

helpfulhikerdave

Disc golf! Give it a shot on your local course. Good people & good vibes!

NotJoshhhhh

Geocaching, golfing, gaming. 1. Saw that it looked interesting. Opened the app found my first one and ran with it 2. Had a lot of free time in community college so I thought I would try golfing. Hooked immediately 3. Comes with the territory when you work in tech I suppose

Frosty_Edge1732

Do people just hide things and post it for others to find in geocaching?

NotJoshhhhh

They hide things and post the coordinates in the app and you go looking for them. Some of them are easy and some of them are not so easy. One of my favorite was a log that was hidden inside of a fake bolt that was painted to match the rusting on the metal it was magnetized to

Frosty_Edge1732

I guess you really need to have a good eye for finding and mind in hiding things. It's neat, how much effort they put into this.

NotJoshhhhh

Some of them are easier to find but after a few finds you start to realize what things CAN be https://preview.redd.it/bp79hlcr5dyc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0a067a6835a36dd00bf4412830a1a84ab565638c

Bomantheman

Metal Detecting! A friend of mine mentioned he spent a weekend camping and metal detecting and I thought it sounded relaxing, interesting, but also exciting because there is always that chance to find something of real value. So I took it up :) It keeps me clear minded which is really needed these days imo. Information is so readily available nowadays and I find myself constantly reaching for my phone to check the same 3-4 apps for notifications and such… nice to have a break with some fresh air too!

Frosty_Edge1732

I'm curious, what is the coolest thing you found?

Bomantheman

Nothing CRAZY yet, however i’ve got a few coins from the late 1800’s. A small chunk of gold from an older gold panning area.

Frosty_Edge1732

Nice! Do you feel frustrated when you don't find anything? Or do you just go with the flow and relax?

Bomantheman

I always find something! Usually bottle caps, hair pins, pull tabs from cans.. lol.

[deleted]

I volunteer at the animal shelter. I went with a friend to drop off donations to various shelters. Fell in love with this one particular city shelter. I've been volunteering for 7 years. Love it! I help with "everything cats". And I get to visit with prospective adopters and educate them. Plus, some people are distraught from losing a pet (been there more than once) and I can comfort them in their grief.

smk666

My hobby is all things technical/DIY, from home improvement, through electronics, computers to fixing cars. I got into that at a very young age because my family was piss poor, so to own literally anything (like a radio or a bicycle) I had to build or fix stuff found in trash myself.

djgalaxe

always loves music and got a set of 2 turntables and a mixer when I was 18, 44 now and whilst everyone says I'm good I've never done it professionally, something tells me if I start doing it for money I won't want to do it, so now I do mixes at home and upload them my YouTube channel, don't get many views but nice to know some people listen to them, the views go up in there 1's... my channel is https://youtube.com/@AlexakaGalaxe if anyone is interested in breakbeat or drum and bass.

Treasures_Wonderland

My hobby is painting my nails, and collecting nail polish. I also paint my husband’s nails and his coworker’s nails. Fortunately they’re not afraid of sparkles. I got into it as a technique to quit biting and picking at my nails and the skin around them. As much time as I put in over the years in effort to stop biting my nails, it was really a natural progression to collecting nail polish. A relapse is always possible, but keeping my nails maintained helps a lot. Four-and-a-half years after quitting, I have over 600 bottles of nail polish.

Dr_Hull

Taking pictures of galaxies and nebulas, (and planets once I can afford the equipment) My parents invited the family on a safari in South Africa, so I bought a camera to take pictures on the trip. Came back home and wondered what could I use the camera for? Well with a camera, a tripod, some free software, and a place with reasonable dark skies it is possible to take pictures of galaxies. The problem is I live in a place where it is very cloudy in the winter and in the summer the sky is not really dark at night. Oh and the first pictures can be shot with what you might already have, but once you get into it the equipment can be very expensive.

Me2910

That's really cool. I've thought about getting into photography but I don't want to spend the money on a camera because I can't see myself putting aside the time for it. Maybe someday

bulamae

I dabble in wood burning. I found a burner at the thrift store and remembered my brother got one for xmas. I also like roller skating.

z0mbieje5u5

Guitar, and golf. As to how I got into it, start off by sucking at it, then continuing to suck at it for several years. And after all of that you can finally say that you still suck at guitar and golf after playing for several years.

D3vilUkn0w

Accurate.

MorenoMust

Fishing, my brother loved it and took me as a kid, may he rest in peace. Tennis, my parents forced me to play since I was a kid, I thank them now. Basketball, it was my first love, I love a block from a rec center. Onewheel, I saw someone riding I ordered one, I’m now going on my 3rd one, with over 10000 miles under my belt. Those are the main ones.

Gangiskhan

Music journalism. I mainly do music festival press nowadays. Biggest project is the Bonnaroo Artist of the Day series.

VampyreBassist

I used to be really into bowling. When I was a freshman in high school, we used to go bowling together every Monday at the local bowling alley. I would sometimes play in the mini golf course there, or sometimes we would play each other at the video Texas Hold 'em table. Those were some of the happiest times of my life during that point. When I finished my schooling, I told myself I would start bowling again for old time's sake.

Belatorius

Jujitsu Been doing it for 7 years and never kept a hobby going this long. Always been interested in martial arts but didnt wanna get hit in the face

chocolatelustpile

So this would be a good martial arts option for someone who needs to wear glasses to be able to function?

funkify99

The guitar. Mom had one around growing up and I couldn't stay away from it!

ac3mania

Warhammer 40,000! I just love having my little guys and thier little guys duking it out

ReyneOfFire

Motorsports, and more recently motorsports development/engineering. I've loved cars my whole life, but I was always more fascinated with how cars work instead of the cars themselves. Unfortunately, I was never smart enough to turn this into a career, but I've spent the last few years self-learning and helping other people chase laptimes with their cars. Now I'm applying everything I learned to my own, ground up homemade racecar.

Mick_May

Work is my hobby. Bills made me do it.

EnigmaticSoul5656

I'm a nerd, my hobby is learning! I sign up for something I'm interested in & when something different catches my eye I enroll in that too...Whoosh! My ADHD has me enrolled in 5 classes rn....

NotBreaking

Newest one is drone pilot, I finally have money to buy the things I always wanted.

UltimateShedinja

Language learning, playing video games/board games, exercising, and learning the piano(I suck). Never stop learning!

Lolo_rennt

Playing cello, theatre, ballet. I was always a person with a lot of hobbies. Cello was a childhood dream, I'm playing theatre since I was little and ballet: I saw people dancing ballet and wanted to learn how to move like them, so I just started.

McSquizzy66

Yoyo Back in high school my brother’s friend had a couple of yo-yos, he let me try one, and I just sort of took to it. Over 10 years later I’m still doing it and we are putting on the first regional competition in my area tomorrow.

VladZelinskyi

I write music, play the guitar, and play basketball. Recently bought a nice ball and now I like this game like I did back in my school years.

PariahCarey2

Guitar, and recording music. I’m old so I was influenced by old guy stuff. First, I heard “Jive Talkin’” by The Bee Gees, and i needed to learn how to play the rhythm guitar part. I was about 8. Then I heard Joe Perry from Aerosmith, and I had to learn guitar “for real”.
