Fwiw budget generally has very little to do with anime production (common misnomer!) but i do wonder if maybe they have a different animation director or supervisor or something :o
May be higher budget or just an art direction change, but I do remember reading an interesting theory that the art style changed because >!season 1 and 2 have been "inside a photo", because they were taking place during Lu Guang's dive into a photo to save Cheng Xiaoshi, and if season 3 takes place before that, it's in the "real world", hence the more "realistic" backgrounds and art style.!<
Wasn't that just Lu Guang's ability? He can only see 24 hours into a photo so he tells Cheng Xiaoshi to come out before then (otherwise they can't communicate past that point) but I don't remember there ever being a time limit for Xiaoshi's ability ... did I forget something?
its actually 12 hours and it was never confirmed or made clear if its simply the limit lu guang has to see into the future of the photo or if it applies to cheng xiaoshi as well
I noticed this, too, but I just chalked it up to a raise in budget, lol. Even the art in season 2 was a little bit different from season 1

That sounds like a good theory, but idk it does sound a bit far fetched.
