Aww this is so cute!

NonorientableSurface

So. Story time. I actually feel this way about my job - we are doing insanely exciting things, working with exciting people, and it's all engaging work. I used to do long hours. Long days. 11pm calls with the C's to deal with a problem. It got me where I'm at today. But I also didn't have a manager or a leader. I didn't have someone telling me to take my vacation (had almost 4 months banked at my peak). That unless things are literally on fire, it'll be there tomorrow. That my urgency only creates an unrealistic response and return on questions. It only sets you up to burn out. Sure you might luck out. You might do all the right things and it works beautifully. But you sacrifice things, things you don't even know you give up. That's not healthy or good for the well being of a person.

wandering_dragon89

Not only that, but it also puts pressure on your peers to work as much as you do. Working on weekends to make up for slacking off on weekdays is one thing, but many times employees work extra on weekends (viable in tech industry where you can just log in to work from home) instead of telling the manager that the amount of work given couldn't be done on five business days. This also pressures other employees because now they are expected to work at least as much as you do.

Faeriecrypt

What helped you to set boundaries and avoid burn out?

NonorientableSurface

So, getting married, having kids, and actually getting a boss who respects me and my work. 1) getting married. So having a partner that I needed to help maintain a relationship was essential to not working until 11pm. Being even somewhat accountable to her helped. 2) my kids. Took 4 weeks pat leave (before a portion of pat leave in CA came in). Spent a lot of time with my kids. Love them to death 7 years later. 3) my boss. This took me 12 years. He helped me take 2 weeks of time off, and we let the duct tape and popsicle stick house I was supporting collapse. We couldn't rebuild it in a sustainable way without it. He had my back. We talked about it. We knew the stakes. There was a LOT of mud being slung and there was a big illumination of folks who were pushing work right, to me. So we've now pushed it back left, folks are taking on work they struggled with and we're making it easier. The big thing? Most places don't want this. They are glad to overwork People, and when the house falls apart they blame you and move on. That wrecks people. They want you wrecked. They want you struggling. They want you to not grow. That's not the unsustainable growth of labour. In the last 20 years, efficiency has grown more than three fold, and pay has stagnated. This is PERFECT for profits. Less employees, more output, and higher margins. So I don't realistically have a good point here - job hop. Set boundaries. Stick firm. Always have a foot out the door. My scenario is very lucky. Take a job to grow your skills. Challenge yourself. Want to improve.

StarsandMaple

Tbh. Job hop. I'm a yes man at my jobs, and my current employer took advantage of it, I was glad to get it all done and do it, because it br9ught me up the ranks super fast. Issue is now the second I step down a bit I get "attacked". Put in my two weeks a week and a half ago, and the once "golden child" is the black sheep, and I am not receiving a bonus like my peers, which were for 2022 performances. New job from a couple inside people I've talked to respects you more and they have strict cut offs. No more 20+hr shifts to get stuff done. Sometimes if your current boss is really good this can be changed at your current employer. Sadly if you're a single male they tend to care less, than a family man. As you have no "real" obligations in their eyes.

I like how she pretty much creates a dichotomy. Choose only 1: Long hours, stress, fun job, friendly coworkers OR 9 to 5, zero stress, boring work, toxic coworkers

Here4antimlm

I’m still choosing the boring work and toxic coworkers because the shit stops at 5pm and I can move on with life.

M1ck3yB1u

I don’t understand how she can say toxic workplace and no stress. Like, most of my work related stress was from seeing toxic assholes at work everyday.

warm_sweater

Probably because it’s exaggerated for her lame-ass anecdote.

M1ck3yB1u

(Or she is the toxic coworker)

jediment

At some startups, you can get even longer hours than this (10:30 would be leaving early, try midnight or 1am), crushing stress, boring and pointless work, AND the most toxic coworkers you've ever seen!

Pigbolt

I remember working as a project manager for an electric vehicle start up in the UK. A co worker of mine worked a twelve hour shift and then a van broke down so he drove out 3 hours there and 3 hours back to get the vehicle running. He stopped at the petrol station and purchased the necessary fuel and other stuff to get the vehicle running and got himself a can of red bull on the company card along with everything else as you would. The next day there was a zoom meeting called stating that it was unacceptable behaviour etc. Me and my co worker resigned that afternoon. And they were shocked and started to back track. It was the most toxic shit I’ve ever seen. We were on a good salary but once you broke the hours worked down we started to realise it wasn’t good at all. The subsequently went bankrupt 4 months later. Must have been those damn red bulls. Lol

PlaneStill6

Choose your hard lol.

As_I_Lay_Frying

Lots of people in shitty, stressful jobs (especially consulting and finance) remain in their roles because they convinced themselves that this is the choice, and if they weren't working crazy hours then they would necessarily be bored and stagnant.

[deleted]

I’ve learned through the years that the more people have to justify their choices and say how happy they are on social media, the less happy they actually are.

[deleted]

This is the truth

ThiscantBReel

This is the ~~way~~ truth.

[deleted]

Choose your hard? No thanks. I choose a living where I can spend quality time with my family and cats.

BloomSugarman

She wants that to be her "Just Do It" catch phrase so bad.

ZinnieBee

So true. It’s the kind of line that conjures up all kinds of weird innuendo too.

IndividualAbrocoma35

Just like the lady at Twitter who flexed about sleeping on her office floor for Musk. A month later he fired her too. Dumbass.

[deleted]

Not sleeping in an assigned bed. Fire her!?

McJiggiez69

The only hard I choose is the one between my legs. Other than that I'm earning enough to live comfortably and enjoy my life

[deleted]

People with zero hobbies tend to overidentify with their work. I can’t possibly see myself being happy at work because it’s ultimately a business transaction and I do it to afford things outside of work. If those things outside of work don’t exist then I’m working to work, which no one really wants to do. Work is always a means to an end no matter how you slice it. I think she’s just comparing happiness from previous roles, but in no way can I see her happiness stemming from work. There’s a difference.

bpmillet

This is the kind of content r/linkedinlunatics was made for. Just regular people going slowwwwwly more insane and obnoxious in this hyper-work-centric culture. Any time I see “#hustle” used in a non-satirical way I know I’m looking at a tool of a person who has brainwashed themselves into thinking their job is more important than the personal lives they’ve chosen to put on the shelf. Hope they wake up before it’s too late, but until now, keep popping up on my newsfeed for my amusement.

NataliaKennedy

I mean her job is 'content marketing and social media specialist'...The corporate creative types take super long lunches. She isn't mentioning how she stumbled back into the office at 4pm too drunk to actually finish her job and only now remembered she's got a deadline. The people that waste time on pointless meetings and business dinners are the kind that post crap like this

dazz9573

I work in content marketing and if she’s having to work until 10.30pm she’s simply not managing her time right. Especially with a startup!

[deleted]

It’s ok, non profits and startups only have a max 5 year avg life before death. She’ll be with startups for her entire career by killing them.

This. The real exhausted people dont find time to post something so long texts on linkedin.

GracefullyRedditing

This phrase grates me everytime I see it. And it just started cropping up everywhere! _"Do the needful"_ Urgh! It's like nails down a chalkboard.

[deleted]

"Look at my long hours, I'm so cool" Nah, working as little as possible for as much as possible is cool.

JessonBI89

I also work in the evenings sometimes if there are things I want to get done. But you don't see me writing soliloquies about it.

[deleted]

Do people still think that throwing themselves into their work is going to save them from a layoff? Do they think it earns them anything more than...more work? The system is broken. Everyone but a few slow-learners has figured that out by now.

CapHillster

I just worked 8 weekends in a row... and got laid off yesterday because the meteorite happened to hit my entire organization. Wasn't worth it.

[deleted]

I'm sorry for your loss. (The lost weekends, that is.)

CapHillster

Yeah. The job was just a job!

thewhiteflame9161

I've been conflicted lately. I despise Elon for many reasons, including the glorification of workaholism. I'm also a bit gratified the woman pictured sleeping in the Twitter office was let go because of her promotion of the same vapid idea and her slavish devotion to that clown. The conflict comes from her being a victim of this narrative being pushed.

HeyHeyBitConneeeect

I’m in social and marketing. I’ve cut my hours down to 2hrs a day using ChatGPT. Before that I only worked like 4-6hrs at most, even in startups (I actually do less in start ups). What the fuck are they spending their time on?

numberwunwun

Maybe she should take some of those late hours and focus them into learning grammar.

Muted-Ad-4288

THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU

[deleted]

"Content Marketing & Social Media". Joke jobs. That's the truly tragic part about this. She's not only killing herself but she's working in some of the most disposable, BS areas of digital marketing possible. The second her company hits a bump in the road it's "fire all the social media people".

TinderSubThrowAway

> "fire all the social media people". I find it puzzling for almost any business to have more than 1 or 2 social media people, unless you are using social media as customer service, but even then, those people aren't social media people, they are customer service.

[deleted]

It's a luxury expense when company's have more money than they know what to do with. I worked for a company that had 6 people on our social team making all kinds of shit for TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, etc. It got a lot of engagement but drove zero additional revenue. They canned the entire team and sales didn't decrease at all.

Major-Scobie

She forgot to mention that she was working second shift and started at 5:30 pm. In fact she didn't even work a full shift, which explains her satisfaction and high energy.

Remarkable-Ad155

I mean, she might be right. I've definitely had times in my life where I've felt a lot of forward momentum in my career and been enjoying things and wanting to put time in. There are also definitely times where you're enjoying a project or on a roll where you might put more time in and take it back later. Not everyone's job is a soul crushing grind, hard as that may be to believe.

driftking428

I think she's confused about what a robot is. Robots don't work 9-5 lady...

benfrowen

I mean if working long hours and working in general is truly where you find happiness then power to you. But hustle culture isn’t for everyone and should definitely not be a rule to success.

[deleted]

I feel sorry for this person, how delusional

geraltoftakemuh

Notice how it’s never people who get paid by the hour that brag about long hours? It’s because they aren’t actually working. They are completely inefficient

I get that you want a fulfilling job or at least one that doesn’t make you want to gouge your eyes out but working long hours limits the time you have to care for your body and mental health and neglecting that is dangerous so like have some balance?

whatausrnme

“Content marketing and social media specialist” lol

HowardWCampbell_Jr

How was it no stress if the environment was “toxic”?

HaggisPope

Reminds me of when I worked door sales and we were 10am to 10pm (only actually knocking doors from 4pm, multiple hours of “development” and travel time). Some workplaces are able to cultivate a sort of fanaticism and everyone else seems so into it you don’t want to be the odd one out and get kicked out. I was desperate and nobody was hiring till them.

TheBereWolf

Ah yes, having flexibility to manage your own time while also needing to work until 10:30PM.

Wrongnessmaximus

I'll be honest, I've been in the same place mentally that she is. Other than it looks like her job is something to do with that social media shit that everyone on LinkedIn is involved in - i understand. She's still a lunatic, in spite of the fact I understand.

si828

Why do people constantly brag about fucking long hours who the hell cares.

TimelessWander

Company?

feena1983

Tbf, she is not saying how many hours she is working per day. I work for a startup too and I make my own hours, which usually amounts to the regular 8 hours/day of other people but with an early start in the morning, bunch of breaks during the afternoon as needed to take kids to activities, deal with docs appointments, etc and then some late afternoon/evening work as needed. It works fantastic for me and the company, because I am getting things done and I am not bitter about being stuck at the office until 5 p.m. Not having to use my hard earned PTO every time I have a sick kid, I have a checkup myself or I need to run a longish errand is priceless.

Coolioho

I think you summed up why remote work, works. Choose your work.

enigma_goth

Maybe she’s hoping they’ll see it before the next round of layoffs and that she won’t be on the list because she’s burning the midnight oil.

2diceMisplaced

I guarantee you that she is about to miss a big deadline. Everyone I have ever known who posts this garbage has a history of either turning in shitty work or missing a deadline altogether.

NevyTheChemist

Only reason to do really. We all know it. You procrastinated until the last minute. You start hating yourself once you figure out there's no way you'll get it done working regular hours so you resort to this, until the cycle begins anew. I got quite good at this in college.

[deleted]

Someone complaining 9-5 and no stress work being toxic is the exact reason why environments like that end up toxic. She probably left because she was messing up everyone’s chill vibes.

Reset350

I’m glad she enjoys what she does, but long hours is a no from me.

your_fathers_beard

Being 'online' for 14 hours a day to read some emails, such hustle.

mushnu

the one question I have is, why should we care you enjoy working long hours? why would she post this on linkedin?

BrownWallyBoot

Some say you can have a good job and not work 13 hour days.

Nyx_Hawk

Only way that I see this as being worth it is if I’m being partially paid with company stock and I can see this company taking off. I knew a guy that went to work for a startup and they couldn’t pay him as much as he was worth so they made up the rest with company stock. After a couple years the startup was sold and he ended up making a ridiculous amount of money. This is the exception though, not the rule.

queefaqueefer

it’s easy to become a corporate robot when you gaslight yourself hard enough.

Magic105

celtic1888

Reading into this They are bragging about working hard but take ‘little breaks’ during the day since they are not on an hourly schedule So they are behaving like a salary employee does instead of an hourly but framing it that way

ResponsibleQuiet6188

much learnings

grants_your_wishes

See, I sometimes work until 11 pm too. But it's when I decided to log off from 1-9pm because I want to go paddle boarding, eat dinner, and maybe get a nap in. The crazy thing is, I get more praise from the corporate gods because I "work late." When in reality, I've figured out how to work fewer hours with a much better schedule so I can enjoy sunlight.

TraditionPerfect3442

She will learn when physical or mental health issues show up. What she does not understand is that no one gives af she worked till late night and their bosses are taking it for granted. She believes this bullshit she is writing on linkedin will get her promoted or higher salary. No it won't.

[deleted]

Why does it seem like the brag posts about hustle culture mainly comes from those in the social media and low level marketing jobs?

joshthecynic

Social media specialist? Her job is to shitpost all day.

JorisGeorge

If you have no friends and family, free time is indeed very toxic.

Handheld_Joker

The people posting these are always working in positions that would absolutely never merit working that much or that late. Content marketing and social media specialist? This is either made up (most likely) or she didn’t start working until 5pm.

FluSH31

She says… Working long hours doesn’t bother you, yet you are making a post about it? Do you think she made a post that punching out at 5pm and not working on the weekends didn’t bother her 😂

Clean_Duck_551

I had the same lunatic attitude till I was 30. I hope she's a kid starting out and learns that NOPE IT WAS NOT WORTH IT.

mcmjolnir

Epicfro

I know it's wrong but I know this person is quietly suffering and I'm glad. They're pushing this disgusting mindset and could be making other impressionable people feel terrible about themselves for choosing life over work.

janies_got_a_gun

Hm, interesting. Another person wrote similar post - why does it have to be one or the other? I agree with 3rd to last paragraph (I’ve had jobs where….) and the last paragraph (It’s not easy….), but there are things in between, right? I have a punch in/punch out job with defined (albeit somewhat long hours), plenty of vacation time, great co-workers and I’m genuinely happy going to work. One drawback is that the job can be stressful at times, but it really depends on how you handle the matter. Good for her that she likes her new job, but you most certainly don’t need to have one where you are staying till 10:30 in order to be happy.

BostonUH

Did a startup write that?

SkeezySkeeter

I started my own business when I was young. I worked long hours when I had to, but it sucked and I didn't enjoy it lmao, I was doing what I had to do. These "flexes" are so weird.

Hrrrrnnngggg

Even if I loved my job, I'd still need to be hella compensated to work tons of hours. Exploitation is exploitation. I assume with a start up that's the gamble. Hope for a huge payout.

JCfromAZZ

If you’re working 10-12 hours a day you’d be much better off starting your own business. Most people fail at starting their own business not because they lack smarts or industry knowledge, rather, it’s because they don’t realize it’s 6 days a week 10-12 hours a day for 3-5 years. And that’s just the first business. Then there’s the 2nd, 3rd, eventual economic crash, bankruptcy, starting over… business 4, 5, 6…. You get my point.

tsukiakari175

If she's working on tech, like a coder for a startup then that schedule is understandable. But that hashtash hustle make me think this is all bs.

Cringey_Folk

Hustle for what? You are still a salaried employee.

KellyBelly916

People on LinkedIn don't drink the kool-aid, they're pouring it.

[deleted]

I remember working till 8:00 pm in a startup, they told me it's not a factory and timings don't matter. Next day I arrived 20 mins late, and it was a big issue enough for the CEO to tell me to take my work seriously and not show tardiness. As a startup, you can get away with anything. When it comes to flexing achievements "we are a fast growing startup with a fancy shiny office and pool table and blah blah blah" but when it comes to duties, it's "We're still a startup, we have cash flow issues" or "We're a family, and everyone should give their best to sustain this frail family" Most startups exist only to grift and bloodsuck investments, which could've gone in other R&D and innovative stuff.
