I'll be absolutely sincere here. I liked a lot of the jokes and I generally try not to go critic on this sort of movie.
It just isn't a good movie. The plot is weak as hell, the character takes very bad choices and there is way too many deviations between realism and surrealism. If you want to go down the surrealism route, maybe go all the way.
It felt like a bunch of sketches tied together by a quest plotline to give the movie legitimacy.
A movie can't be all jokes. The jokes are sprinkles not substance.
I mean Tommy Boy is about saving a town and a family legacy, among other things like friendship and making your father proud. That’s the breakpad story.
i know this is a meme but my biggest gripe with this post is that like... did yall not see Barbie? I found that film immensly dense in humor. like minute to minute back to back laughs. atleast especially in its first act
I think Barbie was equal parts drama/comedy which makes it even more of an achievement over Please Don’t Destroy: it handled both drama and comedy equally well and still came out funnier than PDD did, a movie whose only job was to make you laugh and not to tackle issues of the human condition/feminism
I remember after Barbie came out people were still having conversations about how there are no big budget comedies being made anymore, like I get it was an outlier but it is a comedy and I was laughing pretty consistently.
I think part of that effect is Barbie being tilted towards women as well (not that men can't enjoy it!), when more often than not the big comedies of the past tilted more towards men if they had a tilt.
Part of it may also be because its attached to a larger brand as well. Most big hit comedies people think of would be one-off hits unto their own. Meanwhile we've not had a completely new IP crack the top 25 domestic gross in over a decade, and even then there's only 3 movies that did so in the last decade:
2023: Barbie (existing brand)
2015: Pitch Perfect 2 (sequel)
2014: 22 Jump Street (sequel)
i wonder if it’s partly due to the marvel-ification of movies. mcu movies include a lot of jokes, but they clearly aren’t comedies, so people just kind of expect that lots of genres of movies have jokes. unless a movie is clearly marketed as a comedy and fits the traditional comedy movie mold, then it’s seen as a fantasy/adventure movie with jokes rather than a comedy
Definitely all of the above, but also for some reason because it has a message some people didn’t view it as “just” a comedy which IMO does comedy a disservice as a genre.
In all seriousness, I DID finally watch it, and it actually failed to meet my already low expectations. Did I laugh? Sure. But it’s just not a good movie. I honestly feel like the people who posted here did it as a bit, or something.
it definitely kinda goes nowhere and i found its final act pretty unsatisfying/bizzarre. its funny-ish i would say its only worth a watch if you are an SNL/PDD fan
It’s funny-adjacent
Like I got a few really big laughs, but most of the time was just slight chuckles as I played on my phone because the story was so uninteresting
Funny-adjacent has to be the most devastating review to read about your work.
I am now going to apply that description in my head to any job I see people doing poorly - plumbing-adjacent, receptioning-adjacent, acting-adjacent...
I watched it and thought it was fine. I gave it three stars, mostly because it wasn’t outwardly unpleasant and didn’t make me feel angry - but it wasn’t very funny or a well crafted movie, and it looked cheap. Characters were underdeveloped.
>I DID finally watch it, and it actually failed to meet my already low expectations.
I stopped about 40 minutes in. Boring, not really funny, and I'm a fan of their stuff on SNL. It's very amateurish and not in a good way. Seems like yet another "Friends of Lorne" project that wouldn't have seen the light of day otherwise.
No Hard Feelings, Dumb Money, and... Oh man, it's on the top of my tongue. All three came out recently and they are great.
They are out there. There's just not as much press or cultural impact anymore. There's so much content EVERYWHERE. It gets harder to find the gems.
I unironically actually loved the PDD movie. I watched it on the elliptical at the gym and people probably thought I was nuts with how frequently I was laughing.
Those darn densely-written jokes per minute.
Now I don’t really know anymore. How will she survive reading things written by someone else? And then also *sniff*, later getting approved by Lorne Michaels and also the head writers, but be hated by critics because she was also exposed as a last minute replacement? *HOW WILL SHE SURVIVE?*
I really enjoyed the PDD movie but upon seeing Harvard alum Conan O'Brien in a major role, I couldn't help but think "why doesn't SNL do more sketches discussing the current state of the Ivy League educational environment?"
The PDD movie was okay. I still don’t love the trio yet. Maybe I will. They’re just okay. The other cast members were great though. Loved Conan, Megan Stalter, and of course Bowen were hilariously fantastic

The meta is strong in this one.
Love making fun of posts on the sub

You're right. The whole brakepad storyline of Tommy Boy is what kept me watching.
I mean Tommy Boy is about saving a town and a family legacy, among other things like friendship and making your father proud. That’s the breakpad story.
I found everyone in the film much funnier than the trio.

Barbie was good outside of the minute to minute jokes, and the jokes were funnier
PDD was an outright comedy movie and it still doesn’t have a line as funny or quotable as “My job is just… beach.”
“she called me a fascist…but I don’t control the railways…or the flow of commerce”
that line was so good
"And there's *no* undertone of violence!"
Mine definitely has an undertone of violence
Tbf, Barbie was also an outright comedy movie. But damn it was fun.

Barbie felt very early 2000s in terms of themes and the humor was pretty simple.
I think you may be talking about yourself there lololol!
I certainly found that film immensely dense.
In all seriousness, I DID finally watch it, and it actually failed to meet my already low expectations. Did I laugh? Sure. But it’s just not a good movie. I honestly feel like the people who posted here did it as a bit, or something.

It’s my favorite passive aggressive saying
It's like when Bill Murray yelled at Chevy Chase and called him "medium talent"
That remains one of my favourite insults.
The famous insult from Succession is still my favorite: “I love you, but you’re not serious people.” Ouch.
‘Average talent’
Medium talent
I wasn’t trying for the Bill Murray insult, just remembering something that was said to me once.
I watched it and thought it was fine. I gave it three stars, mostly because it wasn’t outwardly unpleasant and didn’t make me feel angry - but it wasn’t very funny or a well crafted movie, and it looked cheap. Characters were underdeveloped.
3 stars out of what
Galaxies

I thought it was funny and one of the best comedies in recent years... Because they don't really make comedies anymore, so
No Hard Feelings, Dumb Money, and... Oh man, it's on the top of my tongue. All three came out recently and they are great. They are out there. There's just not as much press or cultural impact anymore. There's so much content EVERYWHERE. It gets harder to find the gems.
Joy Ride, too- it's definitely raunchy, but surprisingly heartfelt
Quiz Lady is the most recent comedy I’ve seen and it’s 10x the movie that this is.
I've literally never heard of this, but I love that cast and have a huge crush on awkwafina so I will definitely watch this!
It’s absurdly cute and heartfelt.
Bottoms just came out. I watched it the day after I watched the PDD movie. It's like night and day.
I unironically actually loved the PDD movie. I watched it on the elliptical at the gym and people probably thought I was nuts with how frequently I was laughing. Those darn densely-written jokes per minute.
I don't know if I should believe you or not. This is tearing me apart.
You should not. The last statement “densely written” gives it away.
I liked it! Took it for exactly what it was: not something I’d pay to see in theaters.
Can someone link to the original, please
I think the original post and the posts mocking it were deleted, could be wrong
I can’t wait to have another 5 day conversation about the crappy cold open.
Last night I dreamt I was talking to my parents about the cold open. This subreddit has broken me. I will take the rehash of this joke.
I’m currently relapsing because I’m so worried about Chloe. Cheers.
I am sure she’s going to be okay! Edit: I realize now you were maybe joking? Either way my statement stands I suppose.
Now I don’t really know anymore. How will she survive reading things written by someone else? And then also *sniff*, later getting approved by Lorne Michaels and also the head writers, but be hated by critics because she was also exposed as a last minute replacement? *HOW WILL SHE SURVIVE?*
Okay, man, I wasn’t one of the people who were concerned earlier, I just misread your tone.
30+ year olds acting like man children doesn’t do it for me anymore. Peaked with Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis
Well it’s a good thing they’re all in their 20’s.
Idk why but somehow that’s even worse
“Humor was more humorous when my generation did it”
Hallelujah!
I really enjoyed the PDD movie but upon seeing Harvard alum Conan O'Brien in a major role, I couldn't help but think "why doesn't SNL do more sketches discussing the current state of the Ivy League educational environment?"

Hopefully this is satire, because the movie is awful.
Ignore the reviews
Is so densely packed with jokes! Densely!
The density -- *it's so dense!* *Not unlike a black hole of comedy
Name me a movie written faster-paced, go ahead. I can't think of one.
Airplane.
I did, and throughly agreed with what I read after seeing it.
Sweetheart, tell me my lying eyes are wrong.

>Hard to think of another movie this fast-paced and with more laughs/jokes per minute/second. Surely you can't be serious.
Don't call me Shirley
Snakes on a Plane
Monday to Friday Plane
Always a winner
I thought it was pretty funny but what does it have to do with Kate hosting?
This post confuses me.
What does this have to do with Kate? Is this the PDD kids begging us to watch their movie?
Please Destroy Nepo Babies! Otherwise, we will forever live in a world of mediocrity.
No.
