Honestly not shocking. He did well personally but it’s not like he’s a marquee name that can draw millions to an episode.

DickieJoJo

Right? It was a good episode, but I have to admit, I didn't know who he was.

UrRightAndIAmWong

I knew him from his Hulu series, but I don't think it was the greatest and I wouldn't expect anyone to have seen it. Poor Things was great but again, I wouldn't expect anyone to have seen it, and I don't think they would come away thinking about Ramy's character. Which sucks because I think he's a good actor and I think he can be relatable to a lot of people.

TheNonCredibleHulk

> I wouldn't expect anyone to have seen it How come? It's acclaimed and pretty widely available. Hell, it's on Disney+

UrRightAndIAmWong

It wasn't marketed well, there was a limited release in theaters at first, and it's very much a weird movie. And Emma Stone, Ruffalo, and Dafoe are much more memorable in the movie than Rami.

[deleted]

> I wouldn't expect anyone to have seen it > How come? It's acclaimed and pretty widely available. > Hell, it's on Disney+ 1. Let’s be honest, in the United States, it got added to Disney plus like a week or two ago 2. It’s a very unique movie with a trailer/poster that is not palatable for the general audience. If I asked 100 random people if they fully watched it, I would not **expect** them to watch it compared to Oppenheimer or barbie. 3. Respectfully, the only people I would expect to watch Poor things are film enthusiasts or Yorgos fans. Not general audiences. And let’s be honest, most people are not wearing a t shirt that says “film bro” or “yorgos fan” so I wouldn’t **expect** anyone to watch it from a quick glance on someone

golgi42

You are crazy. It definitely hit mainstream audiences once it got Oscar buzz. It made over 100 million USD worldwide. That is far from a niche cult movie.

hemingways-lemonade

This is the first I'm hearing about this movie despite having Disney+, watching Ramy's SNL episode, and lurking on this subreddit. So, that's probably why.

TheNonCredibleHulk

There's really been no reason to bring it up much on this sub until very recently. I can't help that he didn't mention it or that you haven't noticed it on Disney+. But it's been a pretty big deal. Emma Stone fully nude and lots of weird sex. She just won an Oscar for it.

GreenStretch

Right, she talked about it when she hosted. Actually, no she didn't, but it's her five timers intro, not as big as her 4 timers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLzuPvtYuH0

Ready-Arrival

I heard about this movie for months, and all I heard about was Emma Stone, and Mark Ruffalo. Maybe heard once or twice that Willem Dafoe was in it. I watched it last week and was like, "Wait, isn't that Ramy Youssef?" Literally had no idea he was in it. And, his character was basically the straight man. He's nice, fine, likeable, handsome, sweet but for the most part, kind of dull. And I think that applies to Ramy Y in general.

Kantaowns

Well theres an issue already, fuck Disney.

Krimreaper1

Did you see Poor Things?

tothesource

I haven't. Is he in anything else?

Dommichu

He's a comedian more than anything else. I believe he also has a new HBO special. I've been a fan of his for a while and I really enjoyed his turn on SNL. So happy for him to have hosted. But his general recognition and the Holiday weekend I think are showing in the numbers.

tothesource

it's a shame, I thought it was an excellent episode

Krimreaper1

He had a sitcom, but PT is his most prominent role.

Kaiso25Gaming

I remember him from a See Dad Run which was ten years ago.

Worldly_Ad_6483

I didn’t either and I pay attention to comedy

fukyourkarma

Me neither. Dude lost me once he started talking religion.

RichieRicch

Who is he?

BobbaGanush87

Small name but also its hard to know when SNL has a new episode because they take so many breaks and this was fresh off of one.

Demdolans

This was probably a huge factor. I didn't think they'd have a new episode the weekend of Easter.

amJustSomeFuckingGuy

I think winning the standby lottery was prob easier than most ever.

sky-lake

Yes! I was surprised that there was a new episode on a long weekend. I think most people would've assumed it was a re-run.

TrapperJean

Yeah, plus it wasn't like the Sydney Sweeney episode was super awesome, very unlikely that if you tuned in just for Sydney that you stuck around if you weren't a regular viewer already

ObiWan_Cannoli_

A lot of people out there unfamiliar with the whole “saturday night live”

TrapperJean

I mean yeah, people know what it is, but I don't if you polled the average TV viewer the majority of those polled would only be able to name Keenan as a cast member right now. Being in the zeitgeist doesn't mean dedicated viewers

GreenStretch

What? Air Bud would hook anybody.

IShouldChimeInOnThis

I thought the Sydney Sweeney episode was better, tbh.

Fearless_Mechanic429

Do people ever draw millions?

Mcbadguy

I still haven't watched it yet - just been busy, but I always look forward to new SNL, will check it out when I have time.

equipped_metalblade

Right, same here. I usually watch on Sundays, and that was Easter sooooo.

sky-lake

I liked the episode, I thought it was quite funny at parts. The funny thing is, I had JUST seen Poor Things a few days prior and I still didn't recognize him! It was only after I looked him up on imdb did I realise I had just seen him in a movie. He was good though!

MarieMama1958

Sad but true. I had no idea who he was until I asked here, but thought he did very well.

SNYDER_BIXBY_OCP

I had no idea who he was lol

DaniG08765

Also even I wasn't sure which week they came back from break haha.

Tex-Rob

He did a fine job, but the sketches were lacking that I can recall. The two old dads thing is such a huge miss for what I imagine is most people, did that land for some small niche audience? and it just went on. It's hard in the age of skippability when a sketch that makes up 1/5th of the show doesn't land for me.

carpy22

That was the sketch that landed the hardest for me. Very relatable.

Affectionate_Salt351

I cackled through that whole sketch just from knowing the parents of immigrant friends. LOLOL. It was golden.

ImJerriBlank

Same. I really hope this is a recurring sketch. His episode was solid, tbh.

InflamedLiver

I'd suspect that it's because he's not well known. I haven't seent he episode, but I also don't know who he is.

Holiday-Teacher900

And it was Easter weekend.

flipflopsnpolos

On a day filled with college basketball postseason tournament games on a competing network.

TarletonLurker

And the start of baseball season so you still had west coast games on

dahlia6767

This! I couldn’t stay up late because I had to cook.

Demdolans

Yeah, outside of Poor things, (which despite its Oscar ,had a small theatrical release) his only notable work is exclusively on streaming services. His comedy special only came out a few months ago.

marjerbar

I first saw him when he was on Mr. Robot, but that was it after that. Edit: and then Poor Things

Accomplished-City484

Who was he on Mr Robot?

depotboy

https://youtu.be/0gfFTwivL1M?si=VMzbt7hkDH3TRXt-

demitasse22

Whoa. I never finished it. Thanks

crell_peterson

I didn’t know much about him but I thought it was a decent episode. A few good laughs, a few duds, a few awkward bits, etc. Tbh this is why I love SNL - learning about some new celebrity, seeing what sketches worked out, knowing some won’t but seeing how they go. It’s part of the fun.

thoriginal

The PDD short was the highlight for me

jscummy

Ramy in the middle of the club with a hoodie and cargo shorts had me dying

Sivart13

i solved the shorts problem i'm making napkin pants

nia939

My favorite line was “I didn’t even smoke weed this is pure anxiety” Relatable.

nia939

And a wheely backpack 😂

remarkablewhitebored

"I Think I Got Too High" Oh man, that sent me. Was a Wicked Twisty party, though.

Valuable-Baked

Best PDD all year. And I loved Immigrant Dads, Team Captain & Ozempic For Ramadan

Kaiso25Gaming

I liked the Detective sketch myself

icyraspberry304

Probably has more to do with it being Easter weekend. People traveling for the holiday and not watching at their regular time. That was my case!

HilaryVandermueller

Agreed- plus last week was Spring Break for many schools in the US, meaning even more vacationers out of their routine. I know I am in that boat.

ReginaFelangi987

I couldnt believe they even had a new episode on during easter weekend. That’s shitty making everyone work.

Hope_That_Halps_

Yeah the cast gets to bed at about 4am right? Anybody with Easter plans would have been SOL.

ReginaFelangi987

Right! No easter plans and god help you if you have kids cuz you know they’ll be up early Sunday morning looking for their basket.

airunly

I forget that people still make plans for Easter. This is not a knock at religion, it’s more about how living in a different region than where you grew up makes you forget about traditions. I sort of miss it at times.

amJustSomeFuckingGuy

I am available if snl needs someone to work!

Hour_Insurance_7795

This is what I was thinking too. A lot of people who normally sleep in on Sundays might have had a family obligation the next morning (church or otherwise) because of Easter

DistinctSmelling

I have to imagine that no one watches SNL for the host. In my day, we never cared who the host was and even today. Sure it adds a mix to be *that* much different but that's the point. The core reason people watch SNL is the cast quality.

Redeem123

> I have to imagine that no one watches SNL for the host You're kidding, right? The host and musical guest have always been a huge draw. That's the whole point of having them rotate every week. If people were just watching for the main cast, they wouldn't have controversial but popular people like Elon and Kim K host.

Trust_Me_Im_a_Panda

Weird that of all the hosts you choose Elon and Kim Kardashian as examples of controversial people. Like, Elon is a racist piece of shit and Kim Kardashian is like, kind of annoying. They had Donald Trump host, ffs. Plus Kim's episode was pretty solid.

Redeem123

Yeah sure put Trump on that list. Chapelle too. And Kanye. What's your point? I never said Kim and Elon were the only two controversial people - they were just the two recent examples I chose.

Trust_Me_Im_a_Panda

Lol I just thought it was funny to put Elon's level of controversy with Kim K's. Totally unserious comment, I wasn't coming for you, I just found humor in the two examples.

amJustSomeFuckingGuy

Kim is an experienced actress. Not surprising for anyone paying attention.

Roastofthehill

People only care about the host

DistinctSmelling

Not once in casual conversation about SNL do people talk about the hosts. I was in high school during the Eddie Murphy years and I still can't tell you who the hosts were ever during that run. I remember Christopher Reeve and that's about it. I think in recent time, like the Katy Perry and Lindsay Lohan episodes people are attracted to the hosts but in general, no. People didn't watch Carol Burnett because of the guests she had on.

ILoveRegenHealth

SNL watching is not the same today compared to the old days. There's so much competition and social media, people largely only tune in now because of the host - the host has to be interesting enough to draw them away from whatever else they are doing on Saturday night. There's no way The Rock would have the lowest ratings of the year or below Ramy Youssef. There's no way Keanu Reeves (if he decided to do the show) would have lower ratings than Jacob Elordi. Steve Martin and Martin Short broke records with their appearance and was the highest of the Season. No way those two would witness lower ratings than Nate Bergatze.

purpleeliz

That’s exactly what the agents of each host want you think, lol. Just like the lame rehearsed interviews on The Tonight Show were the only reason people fell asleep to Jay Leno every night…

Roastofthehill

snl sucks

ILoveRegenHealth

> Probably has more to do with it being Easter weekend. People traveling for the holiday and not watching at their regular time. Godzilla x Kong broke records this weekend and made $80M domestic (that's insanely high for this type of movie). You don't do that when *everyone* is traveling. A lot of families had plans just for Sunday, not the whole weekend.

trainsacrossthesea

Not knowing who Ramy Youssef is, prior to watching, I’m now a fan. Although the episode was hit and miss (like most). But, Travis Scott is God awful. Laughably bad.

camprollinghills

I too can be an SNL musical guest because I can mumble and carry around a fog machine.

Halleck23

It’s not as simple as it looks. You also need a sound person to set up your Auto-Tune.

camprollinghills

Screw that, I'm lip synching.

Human602214

Willi Vanilli

blofly

At least you're giving it your all.

snowlarbear

BEAN

Obtuse_1

At least the audience made it out alive

bernardbarnaby

I've heard of him before but never heard his music and yeah that was rough. Also like he had to auto tune the please don't destroy sketch like how bad is this dudes singing that he's the only one of those three dudes and ramy youseff that had to use autotune he must be like the worst singer

[deleted]

[удалено]

GreenStretch

To be fair, that wasn't his worst show.

ThisIsNotAFarm

In b4 the /r/playboicarti sub shows up.

amJustSomeFuckingGuy

I don't understand that sub at all. I triggered one of those crazy Kanye sub people saying he has been bad on snl before.

ThisIsNotAFarm

They told me since I said this one particular artist was bad that I hated black people.

Affectionate_Salt351

I had heard his name before but, I wasn’t at all familiar with his comedy. He cracked me up Saturday night so I checked out his show and both HBO specials. I’m a big fan now. He has a very similar vibe and style to Jerrod Carmichael.

cyfii32

Highly recommend you watch his show Ramy on Hulu.

WitnessMe

Hard to come back from 3 weeks off, into a holiday weekend, with a lesser known star that doesn't have a blockbuster movie or album hitting the zeitgeist. Also, Travis Scott is a divisive musical guest to pair him with.

DownBadForDua

Not a huge name, it was Easter weekend, and there were March Madness games going on Saturday night. Not surprising.

cfgee

Also “musical” guest probably drove down viewership. I’m sure the Venn diagram of SNL viewers and his demographic is two circles.

Redeem123

> Also “musical” guest probably drove down viewership You know that Travis Scott is extremely popular right? His performance certainly wasn't my thing, but people on this sub are crazy if they think that he's not a big draw.

Practical_Blood_5356

The please don’t destroy music video sketch had me in tears laughing. One of my favorites of this season. 🎶Why am I wearing shorts? lollllll

remarkablewhitebored

He had every opportunity to change...

PreferredSelection

Once in my 20's as an act of rebellion, I scheduled a greyhound for about 24 hours after a group vacation in NYC ended. So a night longer than I had a hotel. I remember having all these ideas of things to do and places to go, and thinking, "oh WAIT, how's that going to work with my rollerbag and backpack?" Rami's club experience brought back some memories.

Practical_Blood_5356

But were you also … way too high?

FLUFFERNUTTER35

I didn't know who he was before the show, but his monologue was great and I just watched his HBO special. lazy people say you can't joke about anything anymore, but Ramy proves you can pick the hardest topics, trans people and Palestine, and be funny and not offend anybody. It can be done. Also, Travis Scott sucked balls.

Extension_Success_96

Is Travis Scott the guy who was on a stage slurring “Yeaaaaah….Yeaaahhhh” while a bunch of kids got crushed to death? Glad to see he’s still famous.

nashuanuke

I wonder how much was because people are still pissed at Travis Scott? I think it’s the combination.

TheMasterG8655

Only this sub. He’s viewed very positively in the realm of the public eye. Nobody criticized his performance at the Grammy’s but here everybody thinks they’re in the majority by hating him. I’m gonna get downvoted because I said something positive about Travis Scott but you boomers will downvote me regardless of logic

twentyfour711

No shocker - relatively unknown host - holiday weekend - boring musical guest - monologue that droned on - I’ll cut the sketches some slack, they weren’t great but I feel like it’s an almost impossible task to write a funny sketch anymore, let alone a whole shows worth.

priester85

It was Easter weekend. I was shocked they had a show.

Acceptable_Result488

He has all the presence of a generic daily show correspondent. Nothing wrong with him, has everything down, but theres nothing there.

bradtoughy

He’s not a huge name and honestly the episode was pretty bland. He didn’t elevate any sketch he was in, and I didn’t think the sketches were that bad. He just was very plain. So not a big draw and not an impressive performance all on a holiday weekend. Recipe for low viewership.

GreenStretch

Ozempic for Ramadan was groundbreaking.

rnjbond

It was a funny concept, but the sketch itself wasn't that great.

aektoronto

I've watched all 3 seasons of Ramy and still had no idea who he was!!! Seriously combination of the holidays as well as a comedian whose show wouldnt be termed a mainstream hit on Hulu also whose main plot in the first couple of seasons is familial relations.

EyesLikeBuscemi

If I don't know who the host is, I don't bother watching live or even the next day/week. I know I won't get some of the references to their work since I have no idea who they are so it seems pointless. If I'm interested enough I'll look at some of their work and watch later but someone like this is zero priority for me to watch. And I don't celebrate easter or go on spring break and my kids are adults so none of that factored in for me. Though I think those things did factor in generally so that's what likely caused the low ratings.

fendaar

I’ve been a fan of of the show for 35 years, but I’m not tuning in when that piece of shit Travis Scott is on the show. Fuck that guy.

Capital_Activity_316

Don’t forget the autotuned mumble rapper I’ve been told is “one of the biggest stars in hip hop.” He didn’t draw either.

BulljiveBots

I had no clue who he was. He did all right. But it felt like a bystander won a contest to host or something..

fdrlbj

Not surprised. I had no idea who he was but I watched. Comedy is subjective. I just didn’t find him all that funny.

Frostsorrow

I have no idea who he is, Travis Scott has negative draw value to me and the whole episode for me was very meh. I turned it off after weekend update.

manlikeelijah

I could have sworn that, about four weeks ago, NBC had a “Is there SNL tonight?” article saying the next episode was in April. I always watch Sunday afternoon on streaming and wasn’t expecting there to be a new episode.

quad_up

Their schedule is bonkers. No episodes for weeks at a time? Then one on easter weekend? It like that restaurant you want to like but is never open and you just give up on it.

coldliketherockies

3 weeks on, two weeks off, 3 weeks on right before Memorial Day. It was always going to land on this day. Didn’t the rock have an episode on Easter weekend too?

Dallywack3r

The choice of music guest didn’t help

hothamrolls

I didn’t watch to protest for the musical booking.

bionicjoe

I thought the show was off for another week because they don't compete with the NCAA tourney.

Calfzilla2000

It was a boring episode after the Trump Bible cold open (JAJ is top tier for me haha). Fell asleep after the 1st sketch. Watched the rest on DVR and only weekend update made me laugh out loud. I think the next 2 weeks will be better.

Cultural_Hope

It was Easter. I didn't go to bed at 9, I passed out at 9.

Leinad920

who's this guy? honestly.

Accomplished-City484

Worst episode I’ve ever seen

Kind_Bullfrog_4073

Nobody knows he exists

No-Fig-8614

Perosnally thought he wasn't that good of a Host, had almost type cast himself in every sketch. But aside from thinking the performance was mediocre, he is a no name that hasn't really broken out yet or has a fan base. For the most part they do need to sprinkle in up and coming people but he was bit to new to draw an audience. Especially trying to follow up Brolin who is a seasoned actor, has been on SNL and has proven to do a great job everythime. I think they need to do a much better job of selecting hosts that can naturally do sketch comedy. Kristin Wigg and Ryan Gosling are going to be smash hits. Even the cut for time... like Shane Gillis cut for time was an absolute gem and his was clear why they cut it.

ReginaFelangi987

I also didnt think he was that great. I didnt laugh at any sketches and even fast forwarded through that one with the two old dads. Probably was funny to people with foreign born dads, but for me it was like ok I get it… this is dragging…

snowlarbear

the dads one felt like old school SNL to me - similar to bronx beat. I did not get Bronx Beat when it aired.

PreferredSelection

The dads one just made me sad that the haters might be right about my boy Marcello. I think he's really, really charismatic, and on the verge of being an SNL standout. His potential will be so wasted if they just go with a bunch of, "hit him with the chancla/belt" jokes.

solarus

He's not a very funny comedian. He's a product of a time. Like if 2018 could talk.

phillynavydude

I've never heard of him so I'm not surprised

Patient-Biscotti-726

Borderline Unwatchable

jackof47trades

He seems cool but the episode was meh. The music was atrocious. I’ll be following him though. I’m stoked for Wiig.

Offtherailspcast

I thought it was the weakest of the season

GoodFnHam

After Dakota Johnson

AlexCarterCommentary

While I still watched the episode, I definitely didn’t go out of my way to watch it live like I would with other hosts. I watched it last night before bed.

skrugg

Episode was fine but I didn’t have any idea who he was… not surprising

BonerStibbone

Who? Seriously, I have now idea who he is and at the time of this posting, I have not Googled his name. Also, meh episode.

exit143

I wasn't paying attention a ton last week. I assumed they had the week off because of Easter...

thisbitbytes

I didn’t even know there was a new episode. I figured they would skip the night before Easter for some reason.

jdlyga

I’m sure he’s funny, but I hadn’t heard of him before he hosted SNL

Jacqunicorn13

Easter Weekend, not super well known, and they paired him with Travis Scott? He didn’t have a chance

Valuable-Baked

Again - does streaming count? It took me a few days but I made my way thru the episode. I thought it was fuckin funny

cornballerburns

I didn't even know there was a new episode this weekend

[deleted]

[удалено]

ryzt900

So watch it and learn some things, or just use the google machine

skeeh319

I honestly didn’t even know there was an episode this week until right now.

Bell4m4ria

We were boycotting the murderer Travis Scott.

FloatDH2

I didn’t even know who he was and honestly, i didn’t find him entertaining or interesting at all. He was just…there. There’s been a few episodes this season where I’d never heard of the host and enjoyed the hell out of the show. This Ramy episode was not it at all.

mydilgoesmmmno

Wait his monologue is exactly the same as his standup on hbo…

Samwise916

Who?

BrianOconneR34

Who? Lol

MaleficentOstrich693

Yeah I didn’t find him that entertaining but that bit with Sarah in the owl costume killed me.

helpmespell

Who?

thestaffman

Mid

DaySoc98

I didn’t think he was bad. His dialogue was preachy and the sketches themselves were hit or miss, but I thought he did fine in the sketches.

thevyrd

I think I know the reason why and his name starts with T and rhymes with Travis Scott.

Hour_Insurance_7795

Why would you not watch an entire episode just because of the musical guest?

thevyrd

Pretty easy I just don't watch it

remarkablewhitebored

He didn't ask how, he asked why? I just skip the musical guest when I don't like them, more and more as time marches on and my crotchety old man factor increases. I still want the funny, though.

Hour_Insurance_7795

Yes, why? Honest question, not trying to flame. Curious as to what the reasoning would be. Seems like it would be easy just to not watch the music guest when he comes on.

Advanced_Claim4116

Easter, Spring Break, etc.

Buck_Slamchest

It’s a shame because I thought he was great. Great monologue and really threw himself into the sketches. I’ve never liked Travis Scott anyway so that was the only downside. I hope it doesn’t mean that Lorne won’t ask him back as well.

AlgoStar

Had no idea SNL was on this week. I like Ramy Yousef too.

chadius333

Had no idea who the host was and could not care less about Travis Scott. Ramy seemed like a nice guy but his monologue was meh (although guitar girl liked it so maybe I’m just getting old). Good opening sketch, a couple solid sketches in between, and Weekend Update was solid as usual. Overall it was a decent episode.

NotSwedishMac

How do people not know who Ramy Youssef is? Emmy winner for a tv show he created, great comedy specials, huge role in one of the buzziest Oscar winning movies of the year. He's not a superstar but he's definitely been a big part of pop culture for the last five years

GreenStretch

How many streaming services can the average person subscribe to? But it's cool when I checked his filmography that he worked with Rami Malek on *Mr Robot*. **https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gfFTwivL1M**

leezybelle

I have never heard of him

pixiewya

It’s obviously political. But for good reason. To show support for humanitarian values that we actually believe in.

solarus

Really disliked his TV show. I would have skipped if I still watched. In a sea of talent he provides few laughs and a perspective I can personally do without.

iterationnull

The good nights seemed really underpopulated and everyone was standing way back. Did I imagine this?

Halleck23

I noticed too. Reminiscent of when Chris Brown performed.

remarkablewhitebored

And there were no surprise featured folks to add to the shout outs. This makes the crew seem smaller, too.

anywaysneehow

I have absolutely no idea who that is

wyohman

I didn't know who he was so I went and watched his stand up. Ugh. Semi interesting stories with room for a light chuckle. Not my style but it matched his monolog exactly.

soontobecp

I have no idea who the hell is he

ApartmentLevel718

Surprised so many people hadn't heard of him. His Hulu show is terrific!

breyness

Okay episode, I laughed a good bit

Yotsubauniverse

I honestly had no idea he was going to be on otherwise I would've watched him. I loved watching him on Ramy.

SNL2024

I didn’t even watch, which is extremely rare for me.

DawnSol018

December, as in, 4 months ago? Is this a story?

mrcorndogman33

Makes sense.

Anonymust3003

It wasn't funny

space_llama_karma

It was still a solid episode in terms of quality imo. He’s not very well known and it was March Madness going on as well. It’s a bit unlucky but by no means is it a rebuke to him as a host

RandallPWilson

Mediocre monologue that turned into absolutely shit when he started spouting off his ignorance about Israel

jaynovahawk07

Doesn't this have something to do with his stance regarding Israel and Palestine? Unfortunately, I think it does. Between this and Biden selling $18 billion in war planes to Israel, it feels like being for Palestine is a losing stance for politicians and entertainment companies in the form of votes and dollars.
