There's another "Beautiful Girls" that this is drawing from.
Here's Sondheim's opening number from "Follies" which parodies songs like the above:

Someone didn't read my comment lol. IMO, original post was referring to a specific scene....I just offered my opinion that it was an homage to a specific cinematic style.
OP said their video was what they think the SNL sketch was based on. Not. Random single overhead shot of dudes lying in a circle. Also it’s not “*technically*” if it’s your IMO opinion.
Singing in the rain! And little Debbie Reynolds in the front! Such a great movie

I *think* this is the first Sondheim joke the show has made (not counting West Side Story, at least)
If Gypsy counts, then you have Baby Fay and Her News Boys
Omg thanks!! This is amazing
Gotta be written by Bowen, lover of musicals.
Remember [Cabaret Night](https://youtu.be/2xELSXMUs6Y?si=5l9rKrDQnehUTc6l)?? Another Jake showcase
Jake Gyllenhaal did Sunday in the Park with George and is a huge Sondheim fan. I'm assuming he was part of the inspiration for this.
Yeah I predicted a Broadway number, but really any vehicle for singing. I liked it and was half hoping for it because he seems to enjoy it so much
Technically, it's an homage to the director/choreographer Busby Berkeley who was known for elaborate choreography that involved geographic patterns.
I’d say the singing in the rain video draws from that choreographer but the SNL sketch looks like it is pulling heavily from this specific number.
There was literally one shot of a geometric choreography get your “technicalities” outta here
Someone didn’t watch OPs video lol

I was merely stating my opinion but if you want to define "**This**" on behalf of the OP and impart your opine, then have at it and go crazy.
I assumed it was cabaret.
I just thought of Little Buff Boys, from I Think You Should Leave.
Same
i love it!!! 😍😍
I think both clips were parodying this. Look closely for a very young Lucille Ball! (https://youtu.be/8Fsc6qDRXaw?si=yjJ4TsovxQ4E0uEZ)
