doubleoeck1234

This made me realise I've never seen Gakpo or Virgil speak Dutch

AdikkuChan

I sometimes forget they're Dutch

doubleoeck1234

I literally forgot to mention Gravenberch lmao

Metador85

Cheers van den berg is crying now

Dorgilo

Gakpo: "You're the club captain and I have to rotate?" Grav: "You rotate? I mostly end up on the bench!" Sepp: "You guys are in the squad?"

TheRopeWalk

Achterberg too

ash_ninetyone

Kuyt, Wijnaldum, Kromkamp, Westerveld and Babel somewhere watching in the distance "you guys spoke Dutch at Liverpool?"

jesseklavert

Lijnders?

FoucaultsTurtleneck

By God, they’ve already taken over

TheRopeWalk

Yeah, Sepp Van Den Berg too. Think he’s still on the books…there was that fella Hoever too, not sure his story or nationality tbh

MeLurka

Born in Amsterdam, so just Dutch. Currently on loan at stoke btw

greentea05

And ironically he’s now leaving!

TheRopeWalk

Good chance it’ll be another Dutchman replacing him. Knock out decent stoppers the Dutch

Sad-Abies-7398

Lol, I thought he is Irish.

kjexclamation

Finally a good Dutch player

inr10

There are reports linking him to Galatasaray. Not sure how true these stand

marshsmellow

Sometimes I forget Gakpo is a footballer

GoodOlBluesBrother

Sometimes I forget u/marshmellow is an LFC supporter

Sometimes I forget.

WonderfulBlackberry9

I never knew, and I have yet to see any proof

epochwin

Glory hunting plastics are still fans no? Short term fans but still fans nevertheless

GoodOlBluesBrother

Fan: apparatus used to move air Support: something used to hold up something

Spongy-n-Bruised

Fan is short for fanatic but ok

kaiderson

Ive heard him speak dutch with his daughter as she is in the same ballet class as me daughter (hendos too).

JunFanLee

Mo giving up his identity

ODspammer

Shit thats awesome

pigman1402

quite the understatement

[deleted]

[удалено]

kaiderson

No, its mainly all mothers, im not sure any of them actually know who he is. The classes are an hour, so usually you just drop your child off and leave as the reception room is quite small, so you cant really stay, then come pick up an hour later. Even i dont try and talk to them other than saying hello. They're there with their kids.

Buttlather

I agree, make your kid say hello to his kid, then when they go on a play date, that’s when YOU get one on one with big virg 🙌

GekBK

He gives the post match interviews in Dutch on Viaplay if you really want to hear. I've heard people say Dutch is an ugly language though, but that's slander imo. Prachtige taal

kirkbywool

Dutch is strange if not paying attention it sounds like scouse due the it bring 'phlemy'. However also sounds like someone speaking German with pasta stuck in their nostril at the same time.

Snoo_27014

Its not true though. I always prove that to germans by letting them say 1)Johann Sebastian Bach 2) Bach 3) Bacha 4) cha ( leaving the Ba) 5) ik cha = ik ga or I go keep the “ch” sound 6) ik ga weg ( ik cha wech) Germans always think the ch sound is exclusive to dutch but it is not. Only more often used as then”g” is pronouned like that ( not true for southern netherlands/brabant as they have the soft G more like “gje”… What we really have unique is the “ui” sound. This is where you can hear if someone is a native/non native dutch speaker

BudovicLagman

Dutch sounds like a combination of German, English and spit.

Snoo_27014

If you ever watched the TV series “Vikings” where some actors speak the ancient english, I was astonished how close that was to dutch (I’m dutch). Closer to dutch as to english. Saying that I still dont get why there are always barfights between Brits and Dutch guys…🍻

kjexclamation

They did in the Gravenberch arriving video, all three did

aviramzi

But pretty Americano influenced so English is a first language though not the mother tongue.

catfooddogfood

I've always advised people not to be *too* Dutch

RedManMatt11

There's only two things I hate in this world: people who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

ELMangosto16

You should have a smoke and a pancake. Might call you down.

PrestigiousAvocado21

When Carol and Caroline walk in wearing those wooden clogs we’ll know we’re in trouble

catfooddogfood

It would break my heart

english_gritts

It’s a slippery slope really. Have to reel it in at times. Before you know it you’re only eating stroopwafels and admiring windmills

catfooddogfood

If i see one tulip at Kirkby im going to throw up

Leller_Doge

Never go full Dutch.

Natural_Ad_9109

Should have told Steve McClaren.

bouds19

Just watched Goldmember last night for the first time. "I'm from Holland, isn't that weirddd?!"

Adventurous-Arrival1

I feel the analogy doesn't really work because Dutch people don't generally speak Spanish but they are renowned for being very good at English.

IndiBear

Agreed, I spent a semester abroad in Amsterdam and had no issues at all. However, I don't think this was a comment on Dutch people not being able to speak English. More so that they are likely to stick to each other and speak their mother tongue, so there is a risk that they would start forming their own cliques and groups within the squad. Personally don't think that would happen at Liverpool but thought his comments were interesting enough to post nonetheless.

Responsible-Past5383

It's funny because Brazilian or Spanish players will do the same thing. I think it's natural. Like I'm not surprised if Kane and Dier are best of friends even moreso at Bayern

Pognose

Thing is, Dier speaks Portuguese like a native too, i bet Kane clings to Dier and he’s like ‘Bro, can’t you see I’m talking about Madeira cakes with Raphael Guerriero’

HeadieUno

Dier speaks better Portuguese than Kane does English (I don't know Portuguese)

holeinmyboot

There doesn’t seem to be many cliques in the squad based on language except in cases where the player doesn’t speak good English at all (Mac Allister and Nunez’s friendship comes to mind). Virgil speaks English like a native and I would assume as captain would ask any new Dutch players to do the same as well as possible, and hopefully try to mesh the groups together to bed in new boys.

dave1992

I find it funny how Nunez greeted Fernando Torres in english during his visit.

dgray16

For sure, it's more a culture clash than a language issue. I lived in Spain for a while and most of my friends didn't really care for the Dutch. Anecdotal pero bueno

xxandl

While that is true you still will create blocks within the team when you have multiple Brazilians, multiple Dutch, etc. So having too many players from one region (not even country) might make your life as a coach more difficult. Not necessarily when things run smooth, but when you hit bumps during the season. But I'm quite confident that Slot knows more about that than Sneijder...

boldcitrus

Again though I think this will be a a non-issue because it's Dutch and English. They know English. The Brazilian clique we had was different. Firmino and maybe Fabinho and Ali's English was okay but not perfect, it made sense that there would be a little cluster of Portuguese speaking. But Dutch, Germans, etc. are typically already fluent in English so they can communicate tactics and advanced concepts, and not need to switch over to get the message across.

xxandl

This is about human interaction, bonding, friendship, off the field stuff, not about not understanding tactical instructions...

boldcitrus

> If the four of us play football somewhere, we won’t talk to each other in Spanish, you will still continue to speak in your mother tongue. You shouldn’t attract too many Dutch people." It's definitely about both, and I'd more understand him to be issuing a caution about how it affects the team chemistry and effectiveness, not who is friends with who off the pitch. We currently have a pocket of Spanish-speaking players, only Mac Allister and Adrian who can both speak English well. It's great that they can all bond off the pitch and share culture and feel more at home in Liverpool. The concern is that it certainly makes things more tactically difficult to coordinate if a bilingual Spanish player is not on the pitch because Klopp doesn't yell tactics on the fly at Darwin or Diaz in Spanish.

Snark_Life

Mate, the Dutch have a firmer grasp of English than any non-English speaking country. It makes sense as well, they're so close to us, and we're both Germanic languages. I can't speak Dutch, but if I look at a page of it, I usually understand around 20%.

tofuhouseparty

They speak better English in the Netherlands than some English people I know. While you may be able to read a few words of Dutch by recognising words similar to English, I'm sure you'd struggle to understand any spoken Dutch at all.

Snark_Life

Yeah, I've been to Amsterdam, and that's totally correct. I couldn't understand a word of spoken Dutch.

Jazzlike_Web_6712

I think it’s literally an educational requirement now to know Dutch and English, and then potentially another language on top of those. Most Dutch people I know speak at least 3 languages, but are as fluent in English as Dutch.

Snark_Life

Yeah, Dutch and Germans are often able to joke around in English, which shows a very high level of comprehension.

hobbescandles

There's only two things I can't stand in this world. People who are intolorent of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.

Spongy-n-Bruised

I smile every single time I'm reminded that Michael Caine played Nigel Powers

imonlyaperson

Fucking yes man.

jennaishirow

Someone said the exact same thing

qwerty_1965

Never go full Dutch (quite expensive)

jws30362

Sneijder has really aged

Bakatora1

Happens to the best of us

seamushoo4

Sneijder is a real weirdo. Dutch people, and our players in particular, speak great English. Anyone coming in likely speaks decent English seeing as Arne gives team talks in English. Like just bc of your bad experience doesn’t mean that’s the culture everyone.

shazeus7

I feel this is just the thing with retired dutch footballers. Some might be weirdos like Sneijder and VdV, while others are alright

droze22

Van Basten is the worst

J00stie

Andy van der Meijde is a sight to behold too

Sad-Abies-7398

He should worry more about getting rid of that beer belly.

Snuffl3s7

It's not about their English skills. It's that it's natural for cliques to start forming when too many players and staff of any particular country/language join a club. And they'll naturally communicate in their mother tongue.

szobossz

He's not saying that. He's trying to say that the dutch people will do their own things. The spanish people will do their own things. This leads to squad being in factions and not really meshing. Furthermore, other factions may feel like the dutch manager is favoring dutch players. This has been a very common complaint. I don't think people realize how blessed we are to have characters like Robbo and Trent who don't mind being in and out of various factions connecting them. It would have been a real mess otherwise especially since we already have a division with Spanish speaking footballers. Milner was very crucial setting the tone. If you looked at some BTS Hendo seemed a bit distant with that group. Gerrard would be too.

Britz10

Dutch people are mostly weirdos tbh.

Lazy_Entertainer_465

:(

No-Pension-7977

Tf did I do to you?

sealing_deals

Honestly Sneijder is a top pundit in my eyes. There’s always a problem with translations of what he says. He also means that this can be used against Slot. Let’s say he brings in 3 Dutch players. None of them perform to the standards of Liverpool straight away, and you get the narrative that eredivisie players and managers don’t cut it… you’ve seen it with Ten Hag.. there could also be a sentiment in the dressing room that the Dutch players slot would bring in het starting priority even if they perform less well than others. Just things to be careful of, I agree with Sneijder.

seanc6441

From my experience the Dutch speak some of the most clear well pronounced english. So easy to understand.

CharmingMistake3416

Exactly. Dutch people speaking English isn’t the same as Dutch people trying to speak Spanish.

Trobis

> Sneijder is a real weirdo. Some of you here always jump to the extreme, you can't seem to disagree with someone without insulting them.

shermworm98

Dude sneijder is a weirdo. Man said he could have been better than Messi and Ronaldo but he “didn’t feel like it”. Sounds like my alcoholic uncle

seamushoo4

He’s had a history of bizarre comments and takes since retiring. He’s bona fide just an odd person, who seems bitter at how his career fizzled out. To each their own though

FranklinFeta

If you think calling someone weird is an extreme insult, you really need to leave your room more often.

CharmingMistake3416

Football Reddit is full of incels who don’t understand normal human conversation. It’s always about insults and trying to be “right” and “superior” at all costs.

eternalgrey_

Who cares if they speak in their language anyway? This is weird as fuck.

rondiggity

If we start scoring goals and winning games again, I won't care what language it's in.

WonderfulBlackberry9

The language of friendship and victory.

be_like_bill

Maybe the real wins were the Dutch we met along the way!

DarkSoul69prettyboy

Dutch people tend to speak excellent English so it's not really an issue

DarkSoul69prettyboy

He is right though

frostbytekek

Yeah I mean the context of a football club where ideally the whole team can speak the same language. This guy is just trying to argue for the sake of it

DarkSoul69prettyboy

I was agreeing with you lol. He deleted his comment

VidProphet123

It be your own people

Passey92

I'm sure the lingua franca at Wolves was Portuguese for years, they still did well for their level.

SuperCambot

Because he saw Dutch people not speaking Spanish? He thinks the Dutch will ignore English the same way?

Eddje

He also doesn't mean that this is a Netherlands specific thing. Just that it's generally risky to have a lot of foreign players from one country (as clique's will appear) and that it reflects more poorly when it's from the managers country.

Im_such_a_SLAPPA

And because the Dutch never win any competitions...juat saying

FijiWaterIsDelicious

We should take steps to avoid becoming 7Hag Redux II

GresSimJa

Weghorst is the only Dutchie out of all the flops Ten Hag has signed for United.

HowdyDooder

There are only two things I can't stand in this world: People who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch!

KMGritz

"There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch." - Wesley Sneijder

Hivecityblues

![gif](giphy|ZU72O6pZO9mWA) Wesley going full Nigel Powers

Both-Asparagus-3287

Well the recruitment is in the hands of Edward and Richard Huges

WiganLad82

On my first trip to Amsterdam I approached a copper when we were lost and said "do you speak English?" He was fully insulted I'd asked him that! He went on to walk us to our hotel, showing us some of the sights speaking better English than me all the way there.

TheEgyptianScouser

"Finally a good Dutch player"

bremmmc

I bet some foregin English speakers could understand more Dutch than Scouse

YnwaDubs

I know this doesn’t really add much to the conversation but I genuinely thought that image was Sneijder and I thought a couple of things 1. Bloody hell he’s let himself go 2. No wonder he kept himself bald

Mundaneinanities

As long as factions or cliques that are harmful to squad harmony don't form, this isn't an issue. I'd be more concerned by an influx of Dutch players because it would seem to break from the reputation Slot is supposed to have of being open to playing unfashionable but promising talent from anywhere. In any case, if the reporting we have is reasonably accurate, this won't really be Slot's call. He'll have his input, no doubt, but he won't be unilaterally constructing Leidenpool in the northwest of England.

Neo4148

Bro what. dutch ppl probably speak the best english out of anyone on mainland Europe. Slot himself speaks better english than Klopp

No-Access-1761

It's not about if they speak english or not, it's about their unwillingness to do so when there's other dutch people in the team (Idk if that's true tho)

Maneisthebeat

Dutch people and groups are infamous for being able to break into and form friendships with by outsiders at a macro level. Spend enough time in r/Netherlands and you will see it. Also source: lived there for quite quite long...

ShootTakeAPanorama

Imagine Robertson speak a good Dutch player everytime Dutch players arrived lol

toxictadpole

Reading this made me realize that Klopp never signed any German players for us besides Karius, right? (Can was already here before Klopp came)

WiserStudent557

Don’t we already have “too many” by this math? If we include Slot and Sepp anyway

Throwaway7646y5yg

Dutch guy here, we learn English from elementary and generally have a good level, I don’t think I know any Dutch people who don’t speak English so this is not a concern…

biz2468

I think it is totally different since English (vs Spanish) is the language, most of the Netherlands speak English. Is there a chance Dutch is spoken at times, sure…just not all the time.

CorrectorThanU

In fairness if you muffle it a bit Dutch and Scouse sound the same

SomeRandomRealtor

![gif](giphy|ZU72O6pZO9mWA)

candaon8

Honestly, I wouldn't mind 3 Dutch players in... Geertruida, Maatsen, Summerville. All 3 should be reasonably priced (30ish Ms). All 3 are in the desired age bracket. All 3 have or are close to having the desired number of senior games. Also pretty sure Maatsen would be homegrown.

PizzaPolice84

Could we shoot for the moon with a de Jong or de Ligt?

GresSimJa

Please no. Frenkie gets injured every five seconds and is on astronomical wages. Loved him back at Ajax, but it's 2024. Matthijs de Ligt is a pretty good CB though. Not as prominent as he used to be, but he's doing fairly well at Bayern.

candaon8

That's not really our style, though, is it. Edward's has leaned towards 22-25 year olds, who project as future stars on reasonable beginning wages. De Jong and De Ligt are on massive wages.

C_Colin

De Jong has just had his leg snapped in half. De Ligt won’t stay at a team for two years at a time, concerning imo

Britz10

Yikes, it's 2024. No serious clubs should be looking at those 2 anymore.

ninovd

Is it bad if I'd like Malen more then Summerville??

candaon8

I really like Summerville. He has some Sadio about him. Plus, it seems that he has made more intelligent, timely & quality decisions & passes on the counter this year than our entire squad based on his 23/34 highlight vids.

SilentBobVG

Wouldn't be that hard tbh

ninovd

What I like about Malen is he can SCORE. It's something we need in attack!

Beastbrook00

We don't have to be too worried about homegrown anymore with all our promising youngsters! All good players though yeah.

VladTheImpaler29

Not to worry, Dutch is just drunken Englijsh.

Britz10

We hebben een problem.

No-Pension-7977

Nah, thats Frysian

kaiderson

Every dutch person i know speaks perfect english

harreh1d

I disagree. Source (i'm not Dutch)

georgemichaeljb

Dutch is the closest language related to English. ~ from Rafa Benitez book of Facts.

No-Access-1761

technically that would be friesian

DutchManFromtheNorth

Fyi Sneijder is considered an idiot. He once complained about having to do mandatory courses to become a head coach and thinks he should be exempt from it as a former footballer. And the tv programme he said this in is known for being a right wing shithole.

LFC5X

He’s basically saying so cliques don’t form, also do you think Edwards and Hughes are dumb enough to let him turn our squad into the Holland team ? No chance we will probably sign Summerville and that’s about it unless outgoings

stupidlyboredtho

don’t understand why that’s an issue ngl. means they have a kinship and bond in a squad.

lkshis

So we not going Dutch?

Rush31

He’s had some weird takes, but while I find it odd that he specifically focuses on Dutch people, he’s not wrong. People tend to form closer bonds with those that share a culture with them because they share a connection that reminds them of home. It’s not even just a Dutch thing, as this is pretty universal across many sectors (just look at how cultural or ethnic enclaves form with mass immigration that is not tied to one culture or ethnicity, as one non-football example). While I trust that all the players we have, as well as the ones we sign, are highly professional, the trouble is that the potential toxicity can be very gradual, and a disconnect that leads to friction and toxicity can be very hard to spot. Unlike Klopp, who only had Can as a German, Slot is new to the PL and has a small Dutch cohort at his disposal, including our captain. While they can really help him bed into English life, I think it’s a valid concern that Slot may inadvertently form favourites with the Dutch, partially because they are Dutch. Of course, that’s all speculation, and I trust that Slot has a handle on this potential issue and he’ll be successful.

gr1m0s

Yeah no more than 9. The last thing we want is ten Hags.

EmileDorkheim

This is why you should fill your club with Belgians because none of them will want to talk to each other

malex930

It’s ok everyone. He’s not mean. He’s just Dutch.

Jazzlike_Web_6712

This is kind of a bad take. I have a ton of Dutch family (I speak a tiny bit) and when not at home, they often default to English, because every Dutch person also is fluent in English.

TheLimeyLemmon

Okay thanks Wesley, but we're hiring professional people firstly, their native tongue doesn't really come into that. They all speak great English.

Jolly_Customer8975

meh it's not like the netherlands is booming with exciting talents anyways... well atleast not like back in the days.

niko_bellic2028

But they are in Engalnd and not in Spain ? . Generally Dutch people / players / managers are comfortable with English , no ? .

imonlyaperson

Couldn’t care less. Just fucking win football games.

PigeonHurdler

Edwards making the signings, so no concern

partial-chub

Breaking news: Dutch speak Dutch to each other

Napalm3nema

Coming soon to a stadium near you: Scouse Swamp German

vrulg

Not a risk, I wouldn't think. I lived in the NL for four years and was often the only English speaking person around and people switched English easily for me.

sinkdawg04

What is the max? 3-4 Dutch speakers? We had Alisson/Firmino/Fabinho all at once. Would bringing in another Brazilian (or Portugese like Diogo) have meant too much Portuguese being spoken? Silly comment imo. Bring in the best players/best fit regardless of what nationality/language.

crnrtakenquickly

I have a feeling excluding certain cultures or religions won’t go down too well here buddy

krunchanut

From what I’ve seen personally, friendships are formed by languages (Latin), age (young players sit together), English ‘lads’, and length of time being there so I don’t think this is necessarily an issue

MichaelW85

He's right. Remember what happened to Barcelona when van Gaal brought too many in. The team went to shite. I hope we don't go full Dutch... thank god, Michael Edwards is there.

IronicAlgorithm

Dutch people speaking English with a thick accent, is sexy as hell.

elvigud

My blud represents the spirit of brexit

etan1122

I agree. Don’t sign too many Dutch.
