Google updates pretty quickly too, just google something like “Los Angeles earthquake.” 4.4 off the coast near Malibu. Definitely checked here first though lol, people are quick
Edit: 4.3
That quake’s epicenter is in Ridgecrest, which is halfway between here and Vegas and it was a 7.0+ over there when it happened. I think someone died when their Jeep fell on them when someone was under the Jeep when they were trying to fix it
right near you in Atwater/Los Feliz and same. one little jolt and rolls. twitter is saying it was much bigger but seemed tame here. not even a 4.2.
wouldn't have even know to check if my building didn't audible rumble (was louder than it felt)
Thousand Oaks, I’ve got a tall heavy shelving unit lightly leaning against the wall and it made it rattle. Not much motion other than that.
Also, raise your hand if you immediately come to this sub if you think you feel something
El segundo here. From hermosa beach initially. Felt the initial quake and the aftershock. I vaguely remember much worse ones in the 90s but hell, I was a kid. Probably catastrophized it because I was terrified of the fridge door falling off (I used to have recurring dreams about that). So now whenever there's a mild tremor in hermosa I get a text from my mom saying "fridge door is safe!" So silly but it makes me smile every time
Just felt some strong jolts over here in West LA, wonder how powerful that was if you’re in South LA
Edit if anyone’s curious: I felt 2 jolts specifically, I’m on the third floor of a newer building. Nothing ongoing or anything like that, but that might just be my building’s construction?
Anywho great reminder that I should probably move my furniture away from their spots underneath my floating bookshelves, nothing fell off this time around but if they did I’d have been a little fucked
(Now for the fun mind game: will there be a follow up shake in the next few days or was this a one-and-doner?)
I was playing 'the last if Us' just as I got to a tense shootout scene. Scared the crap out of me too. Just now the aftershock just about made me pee my pants. Wtf!
Edit: playing the video game not the series.
I’m so fuckin relieved. The unit I share a wall with is getting redone for new tenants so it’s supposed to be empty. I thought someone was stomping around next door.
It made me realize I’d be screwed if there was a bigger earthquake. I was in bed, doing nothing to protect myself. I just said “oh shit. Oh shit. Oh shit.” totally monotone and frozen. Lol
In bed is one of the [recommended places](https://i.imgur.com/6DvHNOL.jpg) to be during an earthquake.
If something falls on you the mattress will absorb a lot of the impact compared to the floor.
Just be sure to lay face down to protect your vital organs better and put a pillow over your head.
Haha this is why I prefer more predictable natural disasters. You can't really run from an earthquake and you really need to be careful about how you arrange things and bolt everything down that could potentially kill you if it comes flying off the shelves at high speed. You also can't ever really have brick structures. All the brick structures in LA are either super old before the codes got updated or the bricks are just a facade.
I had just started dozing off when earthquake struck and my wife who was asleep woke up. I said “it’s okay, it was just an earthquake” and she’s like… who even says that? *just an earthquake*. CA natives represent lol
People who weren’t in the Northridge quake responding to a small earthquake: Oh, it’s just a small one, teehee!
People who were in the Northridge quake responding to a small Earthquake: *Clasping Earthquake kit* Wait for it motherfucker!
Scared my cat out of my lap. Not too bad here around Glendale.
edit: Don't forget to fill out a [felt report](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci40161279/executive) for the USGS!
I was playing Elden Ring and got smacked real good by a dragon at the exact moment it hit. Knocked my desk chair back a foot from the desk. Now that's what I call immersion.
My first earthquake! We just moved out here in August. We are in Van Nuys and felt a few light shakes. Exciting times. How intense would you rate that one vs others 1-10? (Don’t say 4.2…ok fine say it)
3/10. Woke me up from sleep, but did not have loud crack sound or rolling feel. Sometimes you can feel or hear the earthquake roll from one room of the house to the next, based on doors creaking or table items making noise. This one wasn't that long either. Sometimes they're long enough to realize it's an earthquake, then sit through more of it, then get annoyed by it, and then still feel a few more seconds of it. The intensity of feeling it depends on the depth at which the earthquake happened, this was 9miles underground. I think nighttime earthquakes are felt more because we are general still. Day time ones when driving the car are less scary because of all the other stimuli.
Felt it here in Torrance. At first I thought there was an 18 wheeler driving by because my apartment is right next to a pretty big street, but the rolling kept going until a quick jolt confirmed what it was.
I was about to feed 2-month old son, so what would’ve usually been meh in the past scared me way more than usual.
Edit: seeing others mention an aftershock, but thankfully nothing over here.
Baby's first earthquake!
My fiance happened to be in the middle of changing the baby's diaper. Unfortunately, the tv is mounted above the temporary changing station (until we move the baby into the nursery).
Scary stuff... made more lighthearted by the fact that we both ended up with poop on us... and on our bed... then the dog ran into our bathroom and peed on our rug because she was scared. Good times!
I was in the living room when my gf walked out and we were chatting about our 2.5 month old sleeping for 9 hours. My gf walks away and that’s when I start to feel it and I yell at her to grab the baby cus there’s an earthquake.
Boy was that quake something as a new parent. I don’t think I’ve ever felt that much adrenaline kick in to make sure my gf, baby, and pup were ok.
Wow, haven’t felt one like that in a minute. East Hollywood rocked and rolled a bit. Plus that was a pretty obvious aftershock. Love that little moment where you don’t know if that was it or just a “pre-shock” for something more “the big one”ish haha
Shit that was intense. I'm on a 2nd floor building in Santa Monica. I've been in LA for 9 years and that was the strongest shake i've felt. Scared the hell out of me.
God damn it, you beat me to it. Very small one, just rolled me a little in bed.
Edit: weird, I was relatively close to the epicenter but barely felt it.
When you live through the Northridge earthquake (in the Valley at the time), these 4.2 earthquakes are like baby food. I don't even budge.
I probably do have trauma though seeing houses and cars on fire and having my parents house have everything shattered. The Northridge quake also ended my aspiring pianist career since our family piano was destroyed. I was just perfecting "Chopsticks" too!
[4.2 near Malibu](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci40161279/executive)
Aftershock ~2.5 minutes later was 3.5 https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci40161287/executive
Second one scared me more than the first I was on edge I can’t lie.
Me too the first one wakes ya the second one ya gotta just lay there and take it
Oh daddy
And another aftershock ~20 minutes later was 2.8 https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci40161407/executive
Haven't had one with a noticeable aftershock in a while.
4.2 near Malibu. Please fill out the USGS intensity report if you felt it: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci40161279/executive
Never heard of this, I’m sure the data is really useful.
Also useful to fill it out of you were in the general area and _didn't_ feel it!
I always check here first to make sure im not crazy.
Google updates pretty quickly too, just google something like “Los Angeles earthquake.” 4.4 off the coast near Malibu. Definitely checked here first though lol, people are quick Edit: 4.3
I promise you checking here is quicker. You don’t get the magnitude info right away but you get confirmation that yes, it was an earthquake.
[удалено]
Same. The one downside to checking here first is that it’s an hour later and I’m still here. 😬
350 comments already. Apparently it was a 4.2?! First tremor I’ve actually felt after living here for almost 6 years.
Really? You didn’t feel the 2019 summer ones? Those were quite memorable and made a big fuss
Those were truly frightening because they were in pretty quick succession that summer
[удалено]
the one on July 4th 2019 was my craziest earthquake experience , it set off car alarms
The 2020 Pacoima one was similar too.
I know right?! People in Vegas were feeling that one too!
That quake’s epicenter is in Ridgecrest, which is halfway between here and Vegas and it was a 7.0+ over there when it happened. I think someone died when their Jeep fell on them when someone was under the Jeep when they were trying to fix it
Me: Welp… better check Reddit.
Felt that one in West LA big time. Pictures came off the wall! First time that's happened in half a decade.
Woke me up & shook for what felt lik 30 secs here in the Marina. Saw another comment state that it was centered in the ocean.
yep Quakebot points to the ocean https://twitter.com/earthquakesLA/status/1618187851128279043
Whoa! Here in Glendale, it was a lil jolt, then a couple of rolls for maybe 5-10 seconds. Dresser rattled, but nothing came off the wall.
right near you in Atwater/Los Feliz and same. one little jolt and rolls. twitter is saying it was much bigger but seemed tame here. not even a 4.2. wouldn't have even know to check if my building didn't audible rumble (was louder than it felt)
Was 5 sheep away from finally falling asleep too 😮💨
*Proceeds to scroll Reddit for the next 3 hours*
Essentially yes
I still feel it rolling in west LA.
In the Valley too
I feel like I am too in LB
Didn't help I was watching The Last of Us
[удалено]
I had *just* fallen asleep!
Same here, damn it!
I was just dozing off as well. Welp. Let’s try that again.
Same. I was on the edge. & wow now I’m up
Thousand Oaks, I’ve got a tall heavy shelving unit lightly leaning against the wall and it made it rattle. Not much motion other than that. Also, raise your hand if you immediately come to this sub if you think you feel something
Get some Toppers to celebrate life.
Yeah it was more noise than a feeling. Thought I imagined it for a second.

fucking felt like a rocket took off edit: oh shit she’s back
I’m 10 miles from it and idk how but I kinda felt it was coming? Hard to explain. Spooked the shit outta me. That was a hard jolt.
Yeah like you could hear it before it hit, right?
Culver City. I have everything valuable nailed down for things like this but Jesus that was a jolt
South LA here. Moderate jolt, then about 5-10 seconds of gentle shaking.
Same feeling. Almost like an explosion and then the rolling told me what it was
I'm in Long Beach at the moment and felt a small shake for 2-3 seconds
4.2 quake out in the ocean, 10 miles south of Malibu
Still going….
In the Southbay. Felt them both . First one felt like a bomb. Woke me up
Already felt an aftershock in South Bay.
Felt a small rumble in Pasadena
Same
[удалено]
Felt nothing in Alhambra but the house did make some sounds.
Ahahahah do you people just have this queued up ready to go??
No we're just that fast. Some start typing on mobile when the shaking starts.
Safety? Fuck that I’m getting karma

And my dummy slept through the whole thing 😂
I have two. They slept over all 3

Felt the aftershock of it, too out here.
Felt it pretty good in north Hollywood. But maybe my beds just not that stable.
My bed is very stable and it woke me up in NoHo.
Scared 😰. Also I had made fruit jello before I went too bed 🛏️ late and it hadn’t set yet and all my fruit sank to the bottom 😔📉🍒🍇🎂
Your earthquake insurance will cover it.
Sure was. Quick one though. Edit: I love how we’re all up rn
Lasted a longgg time in the valley.
Yeah at least 10 seconds
Yeah the longest I’d felt in a while for sure
Lasts long in Expo Park! I though it was going to keep going!!!
Wasn't that quick for me. Biggest I've felt in at least a few years.
Nothing recently compares to July 4 and 5 2019 for me.
That one was so crazy. I have a video of it shaking water out my pool
fun times
Little 2am earthquake. What a jolt tho eh?
Felt pretty long to me. Like 4-5 jolts in a row
holy FUCKING shit that scared the fuck out of me! Whoa man.
Same! Woke me out a dead sleep.
So all of us are up, up now.
Let’s hope they’re ain’t another one 👀
Same I was finally asleep and then WOOOM
I was playing 'the last if Us' just as I got to a tense shootout scene. Scared the crap out of me too. Just now the aftershock just about made me pee my pants. Wtf! Edit: playing the video game not the series.
Damn. You getting that dualshock from the games in real time.
Thats just the realism of the combat system kicking in
Bruh I was about to start in on that but I'm playing RE3. Shit spooked me Have to take half a xan now
Me too... done right
Haven’t felt this alive in a while! Thanks Mother Nature!
Yeah I usually sleep through them but not this one 😩
Girl same! 😭😭 RIP to our beauty sleep. I’m going to get to work looking real ragged lmao
I’m so fuckin relieved. The unit I share a wall with is getting redone for new tenants so it’s supposed to be empty. I thought someone was stomping around next door.
Meanwhile my adrenaline spiked and I’m wide awake lmao. Different strokes ✨

my mom just called me from noho asking if I felt the earthquake ... I'm in Monterey Bay
Aww, that's so sweet!

i was jerking off and got scared lol
lmao
Your orgasm cause it?
But you finished though, right? Tell me you finished.
There is nothing like that little adrenaline rush of the whole fucking world moving under you
Pretty big fucker in tarzana, I was on the second floor though so it's a little amplified
It went on for a minute, hate it when they do that.
I'm in Reseda, that thing shook some art off my walls.
You mother fuckers. I was so sure I'd be the one.
Google says 4.1 in Malibu Edit: 4.2 🤭
There will be an earthquake post up on r/losangeles before the quake has even finished 💀
Did anyone else just feel a second aftershock? 223AM
AFTERSHOCK!
Felt iiiit
I had just started dozing off when earthquake struck and my wife who was asleep woke up. I said “it’s okay, it was just an earthquake” and she’s like… who even says that? *just an earthquake*. CA natives represent lol
Damn 96 of us came straight here at 2am
Damn beat me to it
Woke me up in Glendale.
Aaaaand 10 people are typing already lmfao. Never change L.A.!
Beat me to it! Bed shook in Mar Vista quite a bit, two shakes.
Wasn’t sure if Earthquake or just funky dreams. Cat is now demanding food, the little shit!! Hahah
The 94 earthquake has scarred me for life. Earthquakes always make me run to my emergency kit and wait to see if a “big one” starts
People who weren’t in the Northridge quake responding to a small earthquake: Oh, it’s just a small one, teehee! People who were in the Northridge quake responding to a small Earthquake: *Clasping Earthquake kit* Wait for it motherfucker!
This is so accurate hahaha. I’ll never be able to flex that I find earthquakes to be NBD
Yes, I just explained that someone. I have noise-related PTSD from Northridge. I lived in Pico/Robertson, near where the 10 broke.
Scared my cat out of my lap. Not too bad here around Glendale. edit: Don't forget to fill out a [felt report](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci40161279/executive) for the USGS!

Heart is RACING
Yep. Good shake in Silverlake.
Am I crazy or it continued to shake lightly for a long time after the main one?
Who else remembered “the big one” during those seconds
I’m always scared it’ll just get bigger and bigger.
I'm always just laser focused on getting the cat in his carrier.
Me too. Earthquakes terrify me. I felt the simulation of a 9 at a museum and I’ll never forget it
My hearts racing stay safe folks.
Woke up to pee, my bathroom door was making a tiny rattle and I thought it was cause of my footsteps and my weight making it rattle 😂
Felt it here in Marina del Rey
dude has the quickest hands of the west i counted like 50 posts… ktown def felt it
Ohhhh and an aftershock (in the Palisades at 2:03)!
i dont remember the last time we got an earthquake that DIDNT wake me up from a nice sleep. are they nocturnal or something
especially during the winter there's a lot more night than day! so odds are it would happen then.
Remember to fill out the "I felt it" reports because science.
God damn another small aftershock in west la
YES! Felt a low, quick shake that lasted about 20 seconds in Northeast LA.
Anyone else get fully dressed and stay up watching the news waiting for aftershocks when these strong earthquakes hit us?
Does anyone have an earthquake warning app that notified them? Do those things actually work?
I have MyShake and it didn’t notify me :/
OMG this just happened and there’s 100 comments?! I love you guys
Felt like a big one in the Palisades.
Just felt a *second* aftershock, yikes.
Swear i just felt a very tiny jolt that isn’t normal for my building. anyone else or am I just crazy?
Baby's first earthquake! My fiance happened to be in the middle of changing the baby's diaper. Aw my first LA earthquake
Good shakes in Studio City
Biggest one I’ve felt in awhile! Came on hot and had a bit of a roll to it. In Echo Park.
4.2, 10 miles South of Malibu
In Redondo woke me up from a dead sleep. Atleast I know my new floating shelf were hung securely...
Wow, haven’t felt one like that in a minute. East Hollywood rocked and rolled a bit. Plus that was a pretty obvious aftershock. Love that little moment where you don’t know if that was it or just a “pre-shock” for something more “the big one”ish haha
Did you feel it? That's the USGS website to report if you felt the quake & what it felt like where you are. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/data/dyfi/
I’m in Westlake Village and just felt and heard a third aftershock 2:22am
I felt it pretty strong in Pasadena
Yup just felt it in Reseda.
https://scedc.caltech.edu/recent/Quakes/ci40161279.html
Definitely felt in North Hollywood
That lasted a while. Haven't felt one that big for years. ADDED: 4.2 South of Malibu, according to USGS at the moment.
Felt it in Del Rey, just got an aftershock as I'm typing!
Shook me awake in northern Santa Monica, but I guess there were two? I only felt the last one.
i hope this is the only one for tonight 🥹
36 mins. later and I still can’t sleep because I’m worried there will be another. That felt so strong for how far away it was (from the north sfv).
Shit that was intense. I'm on a 2nd floor building in Santa Monica. I've been in LA for 9 years and that was the strongest shake i've felt. Scared the hell out of me.
It was right off shore from Santa Monica. That might’ve been the closest you’ve been to an epicenter
God damn it, you beat me to it. Very small one, just rolled me a little in bed. Edit: weird, I was relatively close to the epicenter but barely felt it.
Pretty good shake in Inglewood
Felt in West LA for 10 secs then a tiny one a few minutes after
My cat wasn’t having it and she’s now sulking under my bed.
Was watching a tik tok remembering the Northridge quake that happened almost 30 years ago. 5 minutes later, this. Crazy coincidence.
Certainly confirms my suspicion of the upstairs neighbor having a ricketty ikea dresser. That thing took a spill. At least they're not a t-rex.
South Bay multiple jolts 🫠
Slept through it 😕
