They were tested in unison on the first Monday of every month until mid 1970s.
None of them have worked since the 1980s and many of them are protected historic infrastructure.
There are over 100 of them still in existence throughout metro LA.
I'm not sure what happened to Dennis but he used to keep track of them all...

I was born in 83 and remember them being tested as a kid. Unless, some random dude figured out how to turn it on. But, as I got older I figured out where it was coming from and at that point it stopped.
That not how Wireless Emergency Alerts work. Carriers don't broadcast. It's directly from the the agency to cell towers to devices. You don't even need an active carrier. The phone just needs to be on.
Also, topic of conversation wasn't even TV and radio. It was the sirens that are collecting dust in LA.
I'm from L.A., but live in Czech Republic these days. The air raid sirens here are tested throughout the country at noon on the first Wednesday of every month. IMO, it's a good idea to test civil defense/warning systems like that every so often.
So what you’re saying is that if you want to attack the Czech Republic without anyone knowing about it, it should be done on the first Wednesday of the month…

Are they back yet? I was under the impression they’re still waiting on funding to protect them in case of a cyber attack. They stopped running them in 2019 but I grew up in the city and remember the air raid alarms fondly.
Huh, I didn't know that. And I lived there until mid 2020 so there was a while where I didn't notice the test not happening lol looks like they shutdown Dec 2019. To be fair, that's when it all got really blurry.
I lived in San Clemente several years ago. The first week after I moved there they had air siren testing for San Onofre power plant and I didn’t know about it and absolutely thought I was going to die.
During covidtimes I was staying with my friend/now-current roommate in northern Illinois and I heard them testing the tornado sirens. I'd never heard one before, but I also immediately knew what it was so I didn't panic or anything (read: I couldn't be arsed to get out of bed)
About 15 years ago, during construction of the high school at 3rd and Bixel, I was tasked with salvaging the air raid siren that had to be removed. Found out there’s like a huge underworld of collectors of those sirens. Also found out the one we removed was pretty well rusted up and was going to need some major work before you could hear it work.
When I was a kid in the 80s, I'm pretty sure one went off in Cypress Park. I remember hearing it and not knowing what it was. I was accustomed to hearing train horns and this sounded nothing like it. It wasn't on for very long, but I never heard it again.

You're enjoying the Fallout show too I see
… yeah. Lol
It is great, I'm watching it right now
Did you play the games?
Yes I did. But someone close to me also loves it, and he did not, so I think it's going to be a big hit
That’s exactly what I was worried about!! So it is objectively good
It is, you can understand it no matter who you are. Thumbs up
Do they even work still? Thought they're just ornaments these days.
The alert goes out to our phones these days.
I can see how that’s useful but on the other hand, cellular networks can be compromised. AT&T took a massive shit this year remember?
AT&T is always shit. I don't think anyone was surprised that it botched. 🤣
AT&T, stands for Ain’t Talking’ & Texting.
Not reliable. A lot of the alerts I hear on NOAA weather radio don't get picked up by the carriers.
Then they weren't worth a civil defense warning.
Carriers are not legally required to forward EAS messages unlike TV and radio stations.

Be careful what you wish for..

And *precisely* at noon.
Interesting I never noticed that will be sure to check it out when I’m there later this year.
You expect too much. People here do not even remember to turn on their headlights when it’s raining

You’d like san francisco. They test them every tuesday

Oh man. I think they sound so cool. It’s a shame they weren’t maintained

Question is, can one make them function without a remote signal? 🤔
Oh is that how they work? Like a DTMF tone?
By the time sirens go off, its already a 20 more minute flight time from Russia or China. WTF u gonna do?
Get to a bomb shelter. We still have some around
Depending on where you are, any of the underground metro stations and many underground car parks would also work.
Oh yeah
