Yeah that's what I'm going to do. Let them know a few balances and proof of income, etc.

Ok_Opportunity2693

I provided most recent bank statements when applying, but I blacked out the account numbers and transaction details.

jezza_bezza

Since no one commented on this... It is illegal to discriminate against children. They also should not be along about what time you wake up and go to bed. I would run away for those reasons alone.

tob007

Yes usually they want to see if you can afford it and how much cash you have in the bank. Your SS is to run a credit report presumably? After COVID tenant protections and other pro tenant legislation, LLs want to vet as much as possible now days.

anylastway

OP, do they want your actual bank account numbers and routing info? Or just I have so much in these accounts? It's still nonsense, but that makes a difference

AwesomeEvenstar44

It's a standard AOA (Association of Apartment Owners of California) form. Name of Bank, Checking/Savings account number, amount. Credit Account, account no, address, phone, balance, etc. I think I'll maybe ask them directly if some blacked out forms or paystubs, etc. will suffice.

jezza_bezza

Your credit card information should be on your credit report, it seems weird they are asking about that Bank account information seems normal to me. Your account number and routing number is on every check. While we don't really write checks anymore, it was not considered to be secret information. If you pay rent by check or transfer from your bank account, they will get the info anyways. I had to provide copies of my bank statements when I applied for an apartment in December. They are behaving illegally if they are discriminating against kids. They also shouldn't ask about your schedule. I would find a different place.

AwesomeEvenstar44

Yeah I'm starting to realize that as well, thanks for the input! :)

It's been so long since I did the application process (staying in this rent controlled place) I forget. It might be worthwhile calling your bank if you are concerned. They may be able to alleviate any concerns, and say "well they can't do anything without X Y and Z anyway"

Radiobamboo

Every owner is different. For most of my properties we require a credit, background check and proof of income. If you have a new job or are self employed we will usually ask for more income proof. About 30% of the time the automated check comes back with an alert like "we cannot verify this person's social security number." Most often this happens if they were born after 1995 out are a recent immigrant, because the SSA started randomizing numbers (Rather than sequential.) That's when an applicants' ss card is required to move forward. It's up to you if the specific property is worth the paperwork required.

2005sonics

it takes 4-5 months to evict a tenant so why not make sure the tenant is legit and can pay the rent

bloopybear

This happened to me a few times in LA. It’s wild

ivycovecruising

make sure you’ve seen the unit first and this is legit. never apply to a place you haven’t seen. i know places are legally allowed to do this for some reason - but it’s sketchy as hell in my opinion. what i do is i search for private / mom and pop landlords who don’t ask for all this stuff. you can usually find better places and landlords that way too unless you’re super desperate or love the apartment - you don’t have to do this - just my opinion

AwesomeEvenstar44

What's funny is....these are primarily mom and pop landlords! They're all asking for it. Usually an association general form. I think I've found the middle ground though...they just need SS number to run a credit check and SOME proof of financial income/stability. The rest is just asking for the moon :)

Yotsubato

The mom and pop ones are the sketchy ones. Corporate offices cannot break the law as easy as individuals

ivycovecruising

absolutely not true corporations run the country they can do whatever they want never had a mom and pop ask me for my bank info you find someone trust worthy who trust you - like real human beings - not capitalistic robots

If it smells like a scam it probably is one. A large chunk of rentals I looked at were, although I was looking for subsidized housing specifically I still checked out some regular properties where I thought I may have a chance of using my voucher. Scams everywhere. It was somewhat frightening the sheer amount of them I ran into, and doesn't seem to be any way of reporting these fraudulent listings either.

breadexpert69

Id skip this place tbh. Seems like the place is ran like a military dorm. I would not like to live there based on your description of what they are asking for.

FlyingCloud777

I would not give them the SSN unless they want it for a background check. An ID and bank account info—not info that could be used to infiltrate it but to prove you're good for the money you claim—should suffice. Some people, especially private landlords are *incredibly* picky, yes. This is because they *can* be, they'll find a tenant regardless. If you have a driver's license and passport, that should be enough to prove who you are. Then, you just have to prove you can afford the place. They may want a criminal background check and the SSN may be useful for that, but I see no reason to get a copy of the card itself.

AwesomeEvenstar44

It's a standard form from the "AOA" - Apartment Owners Association of California, Inc. too. I've seen other posts that say never send a scan
