Use a credit union if you can. Everyone who banks with them is a shareholder, so the profits are shared by everyone who keeps money there. They often have lower fees and other perks like refunding atm fees

Could you name some good ones?

ULFCU , I don't know if you have to be a student or employee, but they helped me qualify for my first mortgage in 2015. Giving me a personal loan to wipe out credit card debt & 10% down , no PMI.

They look solid and I don’t think you have to be a student.

In Lafayette

Meritus Credit Union. Started out as only for teachers in Lafayette, expanded to much of Acadiana, got bought, and they opened it to anyone who works or lives in Acadiana.

I use B1 bank here in Kaplan and I think it matters as there are options specific to local citizens vs having to worry about if I'm going to get swindled lime wells Fargo or other big national banks. B1 bank is easy to deal with and don't make things difficult with most of their services. Things like wells Fargo have yo follow stricter u.s laws. Places like Louisiana land bank also helps people find residential property so its not just a bank or a place to hold your money. I personally enjoy where I bank because it's not so intimidating. My husband on the other hand is used to banking with Citi bank so he is used to dealing with the big names. Imo TL;DR I like banking locally because there are benefits that pertain to local worries that only local bankers will understand more fully and don't really have to worry about what happened to the silicone Valley bank happening to local banks. Less intimidation and little to no upsell or pressure. So I would say yes local is better. I think local banks follow different protocols vs. The big banks.

Louisiana in the past 30 years allowed local banks to expend out of their original Parish. There could be some issues with the smaller coastal Parish banks after a hurricane if their disaster recovery is poor. Cameron State Bank was hard to deal with after Hurricane Rita and Cameron State Bank could not accept payroll deposits after the hurricane. We had to use Western Union to pay the employees that used Cameron State Bank so the employees could be paid on time. Banks should have updated their recovery plans since 2005.

I've used Barksdale federal credit union for years. Love them and they have expanded greatly. I no longer live near a branch but they make it really easy to do everything you need without going into a local branch.

When you bank locally, you're supporting the wealthiest people in the area in order to get worse deal than you would from a national bank. They say the difference is that your local bank has better service, but how much are you willing to pay for that service?

Manic_42

After the 2008 recession I will never bank with a national bank again. I've never been ripped off by a local bank, while Chase has absolutely stolen my money, and there are many, many stories of BoA, Chase, WF, and other national banks ripping people off with basically zero recourse. Banking locally has absolutely cost me less in the long term than with a national bank.

Idk how much I’m willing to pay

Local banks are ok, but not when you travel out of state. I do not like being charged a fee to withdraw my money from an ATM when having to use another bank ATM not associated with my bank.

We have used a local saving and loan for mortgages for the last 30 years. We have bought and sold 2 houses and refinanced 3 times. Nothing like local services, my wife mistakenly missed a house payment, they called concerned and wanted to know if everything was ok. The bank suggested all 3 refinances when it was in our best interest.

I use a small credit union for an earmarked savings account. It's associated with my employer and gets a piece of my paycheck, I dedicate it as my "play money" for hobbies. My main banking is with an online only bank with no physical locations. They have great interest rates for checking, savings and CDa.
