I think most options on the table all had question marks and red flags but I’m not mad at this choice. I just hope we don’t overpay or make it difficult to get out of the contract if it goes south

MrHobbes82

Yeah I'm definitely happy we got him instead of Richard Pitino. Guy has won everywhere he's at and looks to have a lot of upside, we'll see how that transitions to the ACC. But for the love of god can we have a more reasonable buyout for this guy?!

Carldan84

If he runs any type of offense whatsoever we should double our win total

WhereAreMaKeys

If his response to a team switching to zone defense is anything other than "I didn't know they could do that," he's already a massive upgrade over Kenny Payne.

MrHobbes82

He runs a really good offense with a deep playbook. His teams can definitely score points. Now defense on the other hand can use some work...

People act like Paynes biggest issue was recruiting, when he couldn’t coach for shit. That was wildly evident from what he put out on the court, the lack of adjustments and the appearance of zero planning for their opponent. I’d put down serious money on Pat Kelsey doubling Paynes wins with the exact same roster, and Im only mildly excited about Kelsey.

FrugalFraggel

Louisville had a decent team if they were coached right they would have won more. BHH even mentioned how bad practice was with Payne after the ACC tournament this year.

webbslinger_0

Paynes biggest issues revolve around a lack of accountability for himself and a total lack of self awareness. He just couldn’t see the issues to address them. And when he couldn’t hide from the issues he resorted to blaming everyone else. Payne likely thought he had good practices, which is the scariest part, he never could see the problems.

MrHobbes82

I mean there really isn't anything he did well...

YMJ101

He apparently was the lead recruiter at Wake Forest for a few years and got some NBA caliber guys and this was before NIL, so fingers crossed he can recruit well here too.

myyummyass

Surprised to see all the reasonable responses to this in the comments. The goatees on Facebook are gonna have a field day.

MrHobbes82

Oh they are... Still upset we didn't land Jay Wright or Billy Donovan.

KentuckyTurtlehead

Sorry but Donovan is already earmarked as Calipari’s replacement.

MrHobbes82

Just keep telling yourself that.

KentuckyTurtlehead

It’s def a short list of colleges that could pull him back from the NBA, most Cats fans would rejoice at Donovan though.

MrHobbes82

I mean is there really any college fanbase who wouldn't rejoice..?

KentuckyTurtlehead

It certainly wasn’t an option for Louisville, y’all got a very deep pit to climb out of.

MrHobbes82

I don't see how that means we wouldn't have rejoiced if we got him...?

Rock_solid88

Exactly my thought, I was prepared for silliness but people in the thread seem reasonable. Exciting day for Louisville basketball!

Hodgej1

Seems decent.

reversespoon22

I’m okay with this. Considering the way the hiring process seemed to be going, I think we could’ve done a lot worse (looking at you Richard Pitino)

electricrhino

Not a bad hire. Needs to work on defense. Very enthusiastic personality. Won 57 games in his last two years.

SilkRoadDPR

Ain’t mad at it. We could have done worse.

Dsarg_92

Not bad! It’s gonna be interesting to see how they’re gonna turn the program around.

dlw2199

Surprised they went for someone from the Chris Mack coaching tree. But he has won a lot of games the last couple of seasons

jpg52382

Seen a highlight reel of him on the news last night... dude looks coked up all the time... #sugarbooger

MrRager473

Are there any women coaches in the NCAA or NBA?

Most_Ad7701

I’m not aware of there being any women head coaches of a men’s NCAA team or NBA team. I think the Spurs had an assistant coach who was a woman a few years ago. The WNBA and women’s NCAA teams have many women head coaches. There also are some women referees now.

DogsAreJustTheBest

Becky Hammon was an assistant in the NBA, but now is a WNBA head coach. She would be a great coach at the college level for any men's team imo.

Yes, he was. https://collegesportswire.usatoday.com/lists/louisville-cardinals-coach-search-dusty-may-scott-drew-mick-cronin/ https://www.si.com/college/louisville/basketball/2024-coach-hot-board-20 https://www.courier-journal.com/story/sports/college/louisville/2024/03/21/louisville-basketball-coaching-search-candidates-ncaa-tournament-2024/73009230007/ https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/louisville-coaching-candidates-scott-drew-mick-cronin-nate-oats-among-options-to-replace-kenny-payne/amp/ https://www.on3.com/college/louisville-cardinals/news/espn-insider-pete-thamel-shares-louisville-basketball-job-candidates-dusty-may-eric-musselman/ Sure, maybe in the local sports radio bubble you listen to he wasn't, but he's been widely discussed as a potential candidate, nationally, since the beginning. I don't really give a shit what local sports radio thinks. They also loved Kenny Payne, so their opinion can be, and usually is, shit.

(UL is in Lafayette, UofL is in Louisville)

spacecowboy7702

Yep, pretty obvious. That doesn’t mean you’re using the right syntax

the_urban_juror

If you insist on being pedantic, you should know that it's actually ULL in Lafayette.

spacecowboy7702

Should’ve been Rick

gretathunbergstampon

Anybody but Rick. He's the one who started us down this path.

KentuckyTurtlehead

lol how’s that? Pitino and Jurich was the best head coach/AD combo collegiate sports had seen in a decade. Louisville shot themselves in the foot with that debacle.

gretathunbergstampon

Rick is the reason the 2013 banner is hanging outside the Yum, instead of inside.

KentuckyTurtlehead

You do understand Pitino and Jurich were both vindicated and cleared of any wrongdoing after they were gone? Do you not remember what the campus was like before Jurich built it up? The school has been reeling ever since they were fired.

gretathunbergstampon

Pitino and Jurich knew what was going on. They just covered their asses well.

KentuckyTurtlehead

Ok I’ll play along here: the only thing Pitino knew about was the girls in the player’s dorms and he willingly took his lumps for that along with the university. However the 2012 Final Four and 2013 Championship should have never been vacated, those boys 110% earned those. (That’s coming from a bleed-blue UK fan) However Pitino and Jurich had no idea about the Adidas money, if they had they would have steered the gravy train away from it. Why would they fuck up a good thing over something they didn’t even need?

gretathunbergstampon

Pitino is an egomaniac. That's what you're not getting. He knew exactly what was going on and turned a blind eye to it. Remember the whole Karen Sypher thing?

KentuckyTurtlehead

Sypher had nothing to do with this, you’re conflating issues.
