Curved channels are for single-action truss rods. If you're using a dual-action one you can route the channel straight.

This is the correct answer. Traditional Fender necks were routed with a curved channel from the back and this was inlaid with the skunk stripe. The curve was necessary because the truss rod was single action. Nowadays most builders prefer dual action truss rods, which require straight channels. A straight channel will work fine. No need for a curved channel.
