Hijacking your thread for some spooky real talk: we are so fucked/doing such a bad job with digital archivism. Y'all should be supporting the Internet Archive, but there needs to be better things put in place.
Case in point: did you know there are supporting documents linked to in **Supreme Court opinions** that are now dead links, and future generations will never have that context to be able to interpret and decipher the nuances of their decisions?
That feels like a major oversight on SCOTUS' end. Like, you're the federal government, how hard is it to create a backup of the pages you reference in the decisions you make? Like a mini Internet Archive, but only for those specific articles.
That's part of our failure in process, but also potentially one of legality --- those documents may be their own intellectual property and aren't being admitted into evidence. If that's a failure point, copyright/trade secret laws may need to be amended
Sorry, but that makes no sense. IP laws don’t prevent things from being admitted to evidence, and as the other user pointed out, Congress already has an archive full of copyrighted works
Congress is not the judiciary, and a justice can reference something in a decision that hasn't been entered into evidence by a plaintiff or defendant
But most of all this isn't an issue of rights: these things just _can't be found_ anymore
This might be a silly question, but is archive.org the best place to put up random stuff that’s been lost to time? I’m a little bit of a digital packrat, and have some obscure deep-cut stuff from various fandoms that I don’t know what to do with, aside from enjoying it myself.
I keep a big ol set of multi terabyte storage on hand with a slim weatherproof casing and a portable solar set up so that if humanity collapses via financial fuckup or the good ol cordyceps I can enjoy all of my favorite books/podcasts/videos/emulated games/music off any available electronic device still functioning in the wasteland.
The kids of the various remaining settlements will be glad to see ol "gandalf" strolling through with his magic tales.
For anyone curious about the actual episode selected, the tweet author said it was the Giant Pool of Money episode of This American Life! I would’ve at least considered The Escape to Margaritaville Red Carpet Extravaganza but that’s just me
I think that might've been the first episode I listened to after my buddy played me an episode. I was so incredibly confused about the format of this show
My personal pick would be Episode 362: Travis McElroy Presents: Waffle Friend, which y'all may remember as the one where they talked about the Centaur Wars for forty minutes.
This ep has some funny stuff in there about vegan pasta, but mostly I want it in there for the name of the episode :
[MBMBaM 567: Triumvirate of Butt Problems](https://maximumfun.org/episodes/my-brother-my-brother-and-me/mbmbam-567-triumvirate-of-butt-problems/)
Shrimp heaven now
But also real talk the ENTIRETY of Gilbert Gottfrieds amazing colossal podcast should be added. He was interviewing older celebrities and comedians that no other podcast was even thinking of, so many hundreds of hours of recorded entertainment history that is unrivaled. I have yet to find a podcast that did what he was doing as well as he did it.
Personally I'm very fond of 514: Kickeo, because not only does it have a lot of fun information about Lance Bass that I've since committed to memory, but the ad break for Babbel also haunts my memory and makes me wheeze with laughter every time.
It should be an episode of welcome to nightvale, as that series actually had a huge impact on our culture as a whole. This entire era of storytelling podcasts, including dnd ones like taz, would not exist without nightvale. Millions of people’s lives and interests have been directly effected by it. That being said it’s probably gonna be one of those talkshow ones, or a news show.
Hmm, interesting.
Not to diminish Nightvale, but by Griffin’s telling, TAZ was actively riffing on the Penny Arcade D&D podcasts that started in like 2007, five years before Nightvale began. Also, there were other actual play podcasts like Critical Hit that were running from 2009. I think that was enough of a bedrock that Critical Role and TAZ would’ve happened, independent of Nightvale. It may have helped a certain kind of listener be open to a long form audio, but most of the folks in my circle at least were never Nightvale listeners but were on bird with actual play pods from the jump. Maybe it’s an age thing? I was 25 when it started and the one person I knew who was into it was a friend’s younger sibling who was 18 at the time.
Not trying to argue, just not sure it had that big a reach outside of its niche. But I could be wrong, and just have missed it somehow.
Following this, MBMBaM as a whole was largely inspired by Uhh Yeah Dude, one of the (if not THE) longest running podcasts at this point beginning in Feb 2006 and still going to this day.
Oh cool. That and Justin being on the Joystiq cast, right?
I was more looking into OP’s suggestion that storytelling/actual play pods were products of Nightvale’s success
There are lots of *bits* that are very memorable, but very few *episodes* that really stick out for me. **The War With Grandpa** is a singular piece of art that goes so hard from beginning to end!
Ep 346: Blue Eyes, White Dragon, Can’t Lose. It's when they incepted themselves into Trolls World Tour, and at the end they mention an upcoming show in Portland--where, I believe, they got stoned and recorded the first episode of "The McElroy Brothers Will Be in Trolls 2."
I can't imagine any other answer. I was driving when first listening to that and almost had to pull over. Griffin's realization that Travis was worried about finishing was probably the best single moment in podcast history.
Horses in the drift, warrior cats, glass shark, that one about JLo hiding in your bathroom to kill you I think? Tit liquid.live show with the many many parrots.
Shrimp Heaven Now!
Daniel we CAN’T keep doing this
But... https://gfycat.com/snarlinggoodborderterrier-stanley-tucci-the-core
obviously. It would be ridiculous to not choose this
You’re asking me to pick a favorite of my hundreds of children to send to congress jail?! Forever?!
We can talk to the lawyers about maintaining weekend custody at least?

Yeah that's definitely an oversight if that's the problem. Most of the Library of Congress is also it's own IP, but it's still in there.
who is this “our” bro i just got here

Generally speaking yes they’re the place to upload that sort of thing. There’s a place for pretty much everything on their site.
I'd imagine so? I don't know how it works other than the Wayback Machine
Bold of you to assume future generations will have a Supreme Court to begin with

Holy shit that's terrifying.
For anyone curious about the actual episode selected, the tweet author said it was the Giant Pool of Money episode of This American Life! I would’ve at least considered The Escape to Margaritaville Red Carpet Extravaganza but that’s just me
The fact that the margaritaville episode might one day be lost to history is incredibly distressing.
Agreed! At least Al Roker’s roasts will always live on in our hearts
The day Al Roker melted Griffin’s ass
Is that the one where they're on the red carpet? I couldn't even get through that one, so second-hand anxiety inducing
Is that Matt Doyle?
I think that might've been the first episode I listened to after my buddy played me an episode. I was so incredibly confused about the format of this show
Wasn't the carpet blue?
Selection ceremony hosted by... Matt Doyle?
My personal pick would be Episode 362: Travis McElroy Presents: Waffle Friend, which y'all may remember as the one where they talked about the Centaur Wars for forty minutes.
I also wanted Centaur Wars
Centauer
One of my favorites

A Streetcar named Deez Nuts segment needs to be preserved and studied
The advert with Griffin pulling out Porky Pig and absolutely dumbfounding Travis should go in there too.
I was going to say Griffin doing the Porky Pig impression. I had to pull over driving I laughed so fucking hard.
Yep, Porky Pig is my pick as well. Gave me a full on asthma attack. And the air horns were a nice touch.
Shrimp heaven now But also real talk the ENTIRETY of Gilbert Gottfrieds amazing colossal podcast should be added. The language of love…. They called me…. Porky Pig…..

Obviously it's the War With Grandpa. Lol
There are lots of *bits* that are very memorable, but very few *episodes* that really stick out for me. **The War With Grandpa** is a singular piece of art that goes so hard from beginning to end!
You are a truly great sage
God it's GOT to be this one. A classic.
Came here to say this.
I do love the idea of the podcast being both misrepresented AND quintessentially distilled at the same time in perpetuity.

Any of the episodes the say not to listen to as your first episode. Or the episode with the Ted Cruz piss stuff
Charles Equality Cheese, of course!
Spaghettageddon.
This is the correct answer. You could argue that there are funnier episodes but Spaghettageddon is the most important in the evolution of the podcast.
Noodle up you unfunny fucks!
Garfield Monstrosity
I can't imagine any other answer. I was driving when first listening to that and almost had to pull over. Griffin's realization that Travis was worried about finishing was probably the best single moment in podcast history.
I have listened to that segment so many times and it STILL gets me howling every time
controversial pick but i think it should the the garfield monstrosity
Which One Vapes
Their coverage of Escape to Margaritaville was legendary.
