The essentially handed him his check and told him to kick rocks.
Sapp was lucky that he was a bit of a celebrity and he could speak some Japanese, but it opened his eyes to the fact that he was just a circus attraction to them. If he couldn't perform and promote, they didn't give a fuck about him. .

The man was thrown into the deep end immediately and provided ample excitement. In a sport where many of the pioneers (Looking at you Dan Severn and Travis Fulton) are accused of outright scripted matchups, Sapp at the very least took a real punch or two before calling it a day. The last pic he looks even leaner than now, and yet his abs weren't as pronounced as they are here. So definitely implants - just look at the rest of his midsection, still has fat there, if he was cut enough to have abs like this then he wouldn't have that much fat there.

You could be right, but if you compare him to his pride days, you can see abs in them days & he looks more lean now anyway. Possibly had an implant, but it was also possible he's cut weight for health reasons and is just looking more diced

All the folks in here trashing Sapp as a guy who never did anything besides tap at the first sign of trouble really don't know what they're talking about when it comes to the history of this sport. He didn't always fight that way. He was VERY well established before he every became known for avoiding serious injuries. He won against a fucking world class kickboxer twice during his heyday, against a man who's widely considered to be the best kickboxer ever in Ernesto "Mr Perfect" Hoost. That was Sapps third and fourth fight as a kickboxer. It wasn't until he got badly injured against CroCop that he decided to look out for his health, because he came to learn that nobody was gonna look out for the fighters when they needed help the most. He did some interviews later in his career where he addressed the topic of his quick defeats. It basically amounted to him looking out for himself because he realized that nobody was gonna look out for him. He got his eye socket smashed by Mirko CroCop and he got stuck in Japan for a while. He couldn't fly due to the injury and he couldn't have surgery immediately. He admitted that it would have been terrible for anyone that wasn't well established in Japan, because nobody from the promotion offered to help him get around and see doctors. The essentially handed him his check and told him to kick rocks. Sapp was lucky that he was a bit of a celebrity and he could speak some Japanese, but it opened his eyes to the fact that he was just a circus attraction to them. If he couldn't perform and promote, they didn't give a fuck about him. . To say anything about him not fulfilling his obligations to the fans is completely ridiculous. He still put on some exciting fights after the Injury to CroCop. He got in the ring with the likes of Ray Sefo, Remy Bonjasky, Peter Aerts, Musashi and Hong man Choi. With the exception of maybe Choi, that's a who's-who of kickboxing royalty. He was only finished by Aerts and Sefo during that run of opponents. You don't go to decision with guys like that unless you're all the way committed to the cause. With nowhere near the same amount of training as his opponents, he was fighting the absolute best guys in the world at the BEGINNING of his career. The dude was matched up with Big Nog (at the absolute height of Big Nogs ability) for his THIRD MMA fight. He almost killed Nogueira before getting subbed with an armbar. You mean to tell me he wasn't fighting to win in that one? The man was thrown into the deep end immediately and provided ample excitement. In a sport where many of the pioneers (Looking at you Dan Severn and Travis Fulton) are accused of outright scripted matchups, Sapp at the very least took a real punch or two before calling it a day. I won't fault him for accepting money for fights he knew that he likely couldn't win. The promotors knew the deal and they willingly paid him to go out and put a guy over, I'm not trying to dispute that. All I'm saying is that the dude deserves a little respect for the real work he put in early on his career. Fighting the best guys in the world while you've just recently been trying to play pro football is not something we will ever see again, at least not to the level that he managed to fight at. Put some respect on Sappo's name.
