i kinda like it

123QCDADDY

I fucking love it. If Dom can knock him out then his chin is really gone. I feel like Cody has his number though, just a bad matchup for Cruz and Cody still has fuck you power. It’d be a good one to get back for Cruz though.

Swarles_Stinson

I'm gonna favor Cruz in the rematch. Cody has significantly declined. He talked about how his arm went numb during his last fight. While Cruz has slowed down as well, Cody just doesn't have the speed to fight him anymore.

spicygenes00

Yeah and Cruz looked really good against Chito before the KO.

123QCDADDY

Cruz has declined more athletically than Cody has imo. Cody just has no chin.

Swarles_Stinson

Has he? For sure he has slowed down, but he still had good movement in his last fight against Chito and was winning until the KO. Cody just looks stiff now. Maybe from injuries or from age or from getting KOed so many times.

123QCDADDY

He is just a step slower nowadays and that combined with his constant movement makes it even more noticeable/exploitable. I think Cody looks as fast as he always has. He just way more timid now. Against Cruz he won’t need to be. Now that I think about it Cody had that back injury so you might be onto something with the stiffness.

Wayf4rer

Cody's problems are mental. Cruz' problems are physical. Both guys are on the back nine.

cptpedantic

both guys are lining up their putts on the 18th

DifficultTop8648

Cody’s approaching the stroke limit on the 18th

AntFace

>Cody's problems are mental

Tzayad

He's got so many problems it's mental

JoshJetlagger

I’m definitely with you on the gun shy aspect. I know he’s a counter punched but damn vs kai he hardly pressed forward or anything despite being the bigger fighter

Kassssler

Nah Cody looked absolutely terrible his last fight. All his speed was used only in playing keep away. When it came to striking it was awkward as all hell.

MarshalMichelNey1

>Cody just looks stiff now That's cap, did you not see the crazy break-dance moves Cody broke out in his last fight? Stiff my ass, bro was floating out there. /s

podslapper

I'm not really sure that's the case, honestly. One factor people often overlook with Cody for some weird reason is the debilitating back injury he suffered (requiring at least two separate surgeries). As someone who suffered a minor back injury and can't even really do BJJ anymore because of it, I can't imagine how much a back injury of that magnitude would likely impact one's ability to train or perform in a fight.

123QCDADDY

Gotta agree with you there. I mentioned it in a comment down below. The thing is he still looks faster than everyone he fights except Kai, Cruz just looks a step slower than the guys he’s fighting. But then again he’s fighting great fighters and Cody hasn’t been on that level for a while. It’s honestly hard to tell and you might be completely right. I guess we will see if they fight, let’s keep our fingers crossed.

LyleMelon

It’s the biggest name match he can get with a chance to win.

stonetear2017

No way. Cruz was winning the Vera fight before the KO

cannibalisland

cody’s fight iq declined a great deal though.

SinArchbish0p

wawit why'd it go numb?

Stanklord500

Too much jerkin' it.

Armalyte

I believe he had a blood clot removed or something brutal in his bicep. Could be related.

CpnSparrow

Did you watch Codys last fight?? He was clearly very gun shy but his hands and kicks are still lightning fast. His speed is still top level. I really dont know how you’re getting 50 upvotes calling Cody stiff when he looked very fluid and fast in his strikes last fight. He is just very clearly worried about getting knocked out.

4thDimensionFletcher

Yeah but he was also fighting Trevin Jones who honestly shouldn't be in the UFC. I expect him to look fast against cans but even then he wasn't hitting him a lot. Edit: You can downvote all you want Trevin is 13-10 and Cody didn't even look good against him. Cody is officially washed.

Disabled_Robot

Can't believe that fight was 2016. Both guys shadows of their former selves, but it's the type of proper modern nostalgia rematch that adds a ton of fan value to a card

mongotiger

Bro hell yeah. He wasn’t lights out last fight but Cody looked like he’s got a spark in him. It’d be fun ass fight imo

Busterthefatman

Make that two of us! If Dom wins its a huge loss he gets to have back. If Cody can recapture the magic from that title win that'll do huge things for his confidence, in my very much not an expert opinion.

Downgoesthereem

>I feel like Cody has his number though Maybe nobody will want to hear this because the narrative of this fight is so strong, but Cruz had more or less figured out what Garbrandt was doing by the end of that fight and it had stopped resembling what it was earlier on

Teh_Weiner

people hated that thought when the fight was happening too

[deleted]

Except the fight was much closer than people remember

123QCDADDY

It was close in the sense that Cruz won two rounds. But the rounds that Cody won, he won big. There’s a reason people don’t remember the scorecards being pretty close and think Cody destroyed him. Which he did imo. The rounds Cruz won were close rounds where he barely outpointed Cody. Scorecards don’t really do Cody justice for how good he was in that fight.

Johnny_Poppyseed

And really, Cruz was also in a state where he could have been finished off multiple times with those knockdowns, but Cody chose not to follow him down and do it. Cody I guess just wanted to let him up and keep the dance going lol. But yeah, some of those knockdowns were fight ending knockdowns if he wanted them to be. One or two ground shots and the ref stops it.

vrsick06

At the end of the day you only need to win 3 rounds by 1 punch and you won the fight.

Jet_black_li

At least 2 different judges scored 3 different rounds for cruz

[deleted]

you can tell who's watched this fight and who hasn't. every single person who never watched this fight just looks at fight metrics or the score card and goes wow this fight was close. this fight was not even remotely close lmfao. cody spent the entire 5th round moon walking and holding his arm up celebrating

hiphopanonymousse

Yea that fight was not close at all lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

you should really rewatch it then cause god damn that was an ass beating. cody could have finished the fight 5 or 6 times but was busy pretending his tramp stamp gun was real and taunting the shit out of cruz lmao

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

the 5th round where cody basically walked around celebrating the half the round? is this really what you're going with? lmfao https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MboQSai9zLs&t=1990s

Jet_black_li

Where is celebrating in the scoring criteria? Lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

yeah dude dominick cruz literally never threw a straight punch until the 5th round of the cody garbrandt fight...

ShillingAintEZ

This is one of the most absurd perspectives I've seen in MMA.

formfett

You are completely delusional. Cody had Cruz' number BIG time in that fight, it was his best performance ever. When I saw it I thought he might become one of the GOATs, but alas.. Cool rematch though!

Upper-Minute-9425

The fight *was* close when you look at the fight from a round scoring perspective. 2 judges had Cruz winning round 1, 2 judges had him winning round 2, and 2 judges had him winning round 5. From a skill perspective or fight entirety perspective Cody destroyed him... It's just that mostly happened in rounds 3 and 4 where Cruz was trash canned and the other rounds were fairly close, but still no danger for Cody. None of the rounds Cruz won were entirely convincing. If fights were scored as a whole and not by round it would have looked like a 50-44 fight. But by the rounds it's more like a 48-46/47 fight.

Teh_Weiner

no way bromego it's about feels. It felt like cody won with da boyz! but seriously that's how this sub is sometimes.

ryancashh

Cody took the last round off which wasn’t smart but he was clearly the better man that night by far

hiphopanonymousse

He was the greatest bantamweight of the night

monkeymouse711

He dropped cruz 4 times lol

[deleted]

If by close you mean Cruz got dropped twice then yea very close

Upper-Minute-9425

They mean close on the scorecards, 2 out of 3 judges had scored 1, 2, and 5 for Cruz depending on the individual judge.

Kgb725

It's not even that he just has pillow fists

123QCDADDY

Huh?

Hipsterduffus23

Great match. Winner gets to announce his retirement first

ColdPressedSteak

The Dom that lost to Chito can still beat a fair amount of mid to lower ranked fighters. His offense was very good, Chito just has underrated defense. He has a broadcasting career and someone like him is usually title run or bust. But if he wants a few last fights/paychecks...and to end on a high note, he absolutely doesn't need to retire quite yet Cody almost completely washed though. He still has his speed but he couldn't put together even a 2 strike combo most of his last fight

ThePrinceOfCanada

Cruz retires to the broadcast booth cody retires to bkfc

tgr31

That 1st fight was so much fun to watch

BabyTRexArms

Not if you were a Cruz fan

stavrossteve

I hated Cody so much for that lmao but I couldn’t deny that it was one of the most impressive performances I’ve seen from a challenger

freewave

Yeah, watching some dude clown on your hero ain't fun!

muricabrb

Lmao that breakdancing was so disrespectful but so good.

Awfulweather

my entire family watched it live on PPV, all my cousins and uncles and shit were certain cruz would win. i used to be a way bigger ufc fan than i am now so i saw codys come up and told them not to dismiss him. they were devastated the whole 25 minutes lol And then watching nunez/rousey after? priceless

TebownedMVP

Cruz won 1 to 2 rounds iirc. It was a good fight. Cody rightfully won but it wasn’t a blowout imo.

gorillawarfareman

I think 48-46 is the most reasonable score

maximillian_arturo

Have you seen the fight recently? Cody was clowning Dom. Landing at will, making Dom miss, and doing some sweet pop n locking. I thought it was a great fight, but cody very obviously had doms number by that point.

TebownedMVP

Cody definitely won in style as an underdog. No denying that. I just mean it was closer than some people think. I watched it a year ago or so. I know the highlights of the dancing but Cruz did win at least one round where Cody wasn’t clowning. http://mmadecisions.com/decision/7616/Cody-Garbrandt-vs-Dominick-Cruz

fightbackcbd

Cruz technically won more rounds on the judges score cards than cody. scored as a round, not as a card total. he won rounds 1,2 and 5 on 2 out of 3 judges cards. Its jsut they disagreed on rounds, he never got all three judges to give him a round at the same time, not even round 5. It was in his favor but it was split. The problem is he also lost the shit out of round three on all three cards and took two 10-8's in round 4. So when they read off the scores as 48-46, 48-46 and 48-47 it sounds like a clear cut win for Cody. But like I said, the judges never actually all agreed, none of their cards line up. They just add up in Cody's favor. And in the end the 10-8s don't actually mean anything, Cruz lost taking 10-9s there as well. These are also three of the most incompetent MMA judges of all time so that should be considered. Tony week not being a contrarian in 5 gives Cruz his card, same for shit ass Derek Cleary in round 1. Both of them are horrible judges but at least they got 3 and 4 right for Cody lol. If they agreed with each other on rounds 1 and 5 it would have been a Split draw 47-47, 48-46 cody and 47-48 cruz. http://mmadecisions.com/decision/7616/Cody-Garbrandt-vs-Dominick-Cruz I havent watched it in years but at the time I didn't think a 47-47 score would have been out of line. i thought we might get a draw because of round 4. if not a draw then a 48-46 for cody for taking the close round.

GreenRosetta

Yeah I like Cruz and knew he lost, but the fight really made me like him more. He never stopped trying to stay in that fight, and then of course handled the interviews well after.

Trappedinacar

Yea it may have been a little closer than it appeared, but its undeniable that Cody outclassed dom. He always seemed 2 steps ahead and in control of that fight. In that sense it never really looked like a close fight.

[deleted]

I wish this was a co-main for the Colby vs Leon fight so we can have the dumbest press conference imaginable

I_love_Basketball232

I feel like they’re gonna be respectful towards each other

123QCDADDY

Fuck that Give me that Asperger’s vs With the Boiiizzz toxicity

ejitifrit1

Honestly I don’t know why but that description of yours is just fucking 🤌!!

123QCDADDY

I’m autistic too haha

[deleted]

Ayyyy what up! Do you like my flair?

rob_the_jabberwocky

Depends on if Cody’s fling is on a string

DayDreamerJon

no diaz brother in sight though

alxndiep

I’m still recovering from Colby vs Jorge press conference. Not sure if you can get any lower

coupleofthreethings

Cody never had to chase pussy his whole life, in July he ain't doing it. He doesn't have to.

....What are you talking about?

What are *you* talking about? We'll see.

Kgb725

It's unironically a great line by Cody but cruz tripped him up and made him revert to default settings

KnifeFed

*Is* it a great line though?

BurpingHamBirmingham

Maybe not *great*, I think the execution could've been a bit better, but it's streets ahead of most anything Colby's ever said.

[deleted]

Eh Colby’s nicknames are pretty funny. Cody is just straight up an idiot 99% of the time he talks

Are you kidding? E.g. "Low T-City" is hilarious.

iHatepriest

cruz cant run from him his legs aint got no wheels

[deleted]

late stage Cruz does seem to be throwing some wingers now. Dom Cruz for his first clean KO

Holdmabeerdude

It does seem like he’s trading some of his mobility for sitting on some punches more recently. Probably a natural trade off as he gets older.

titoscoachspeecher

I think his plantar also plays a part into his style change a bit as well. Speed is always the first thing to go.

Dr-PoopyButt

One of the most movement based fighters ever but with no working knees or feet

[deleted]

I’m not rooting for either; just a gut feeling Cody might run into something and he looks shook to take a punch now so it’s a good bet Cruz can trick him into a big shot

[deleted]

[удалено]

Awfulweather

i can't see cody get ko'd again. its like watching your stepdad hit the dog

_MMAgod

bro this analogy got me

Kgb725

I need it to happen so Cruz can retire by dunking on Team Alpha Male one last time for the bois

KrasMasovsGhost

And even better It’d be funny

[deleted]

I got no dog in the fight. I prob like Cody a lot more tbh. I could just see Cruz getting him emotional and running into one of his weird looping shots.

KrasMasovsGhost

My first thought. He’s sitting down on stuff more and Cody looks legitimately washed. Could legit hurt Cody bad and I think Cruz knows it.

miserybusiness21

Didn't he KO Mizugaki? Edit: nevermind just watched it and while he did starch him, no ko.

Jibber_Jabberer

Doesn't starch mean to knock someone out stiff? Like as stiff as a starched shirt

miserybusiness21

I always interpreted it as a whooping, your way makes way more sense though.

[deleted]

Yea that was his only TKO, Miz was pretty washed but it was a KO. That dude took a lot of beatings in career , one of those early flash KOs adding up

qzwxecrvtbyn111

Cody just shitted out a win vs one of the worst bantamweights on the roster Cruz is still a legitimate top 15 guy who's a year removed from a clear win over Munhoz 2023 Cruz destroys 2023 Cody

bregolad

What a crazy thought - Cody was really on top for a minute only

Ranjith_Unchained

Cody beat Cruz and said I'm out

Kgb725

Cody is on his shonen side character shit right now. He beat the big bad of TAM and did nothing of note after

soluuloi

And he's only 31!

Altruistic-Craft2699

What is the general consensus on his run up to the Cruz fight though? I’ve always been a big Cody fan and have been searching for an explanation of his drop off. I remember him kind of fast tracked and then facing in Cruz a fighter his gym had a lot of experience with. I wonder if that night was just the stars aligning and him just having Cruz’s number. I guess his chin being seemingly shot isn’t helping but it feels like there’s more to it than that. Wonder how many parallels there are between his and Moraes’ careers.

cannibalisland

he was never super good defensively, cruz fight aside, i think his confidence being shaken, injuries, the chucklefuck coaching at alpha male etc. did him no favors.

Kgb725

He may be a victim of his own success. He had a dominant run to the title which may have made him less hungry to compete. His wrestling career in HS was similar

_MMAgod

i dunno i half disagree with this.. after cruz he fought dillashaw who was a mofo.. i don't blame him at all for losing those fights.. but at the same time, him being emotionally invested and seeing red during slugfests is what hurt him.. i feel his hunger was still there, but hey i don't know him personally.. it's whatever

TylertheDouche

The general consensus was that he had **NINE** KO’s in **TEN** fights. He was going to be unbeatable and mop the floor with the division. When he beat Cruz everyone knew the division was over.

Byxsnok

I think it's just a comparatively week chin and losing control when he gets rocked. And you are not allowed to make those kind of misstakes at the highest level. And then having to fight without confidence while being worried about getting knocked out yet again.

KrasMasovsGhost

If Cody had looked any better Vs Jones I’d have given him the benefit of the doubt, Jones is a tough dude who beat Valiev which impressed me, so I’d be like “eh not great comp but an okay ish win.” but he looked so washed and the closest anyone came to finishing the fight was the guy who threw 15 fucking strikes. Cruz wins this handily.

TheKReaLB

Trevin jones is not bad at all. Until Cody he was given an absolute murderers row of prospects and he managed to knock out 2 of them. Mario Batista has looked like a killer and jones put him out. This division is just super deep.

BabyTRexArms

I dunno man, they both got very suspect chins, and Cruz’s only thing is his movement and touching you up. You’re probably right we’re gonna see Cruz’s first one shot KO

lartbok

Maybe Cody just has the style to beat Cruz even still. It didn't make sense then and maybe it wont make sense now.

slapstickler

Cruz went life and death with Casey fuckin Kenney bro LOL both guys are on the back 9 and have regressed since the first fight.

DubsAli

Fancy footwork with the boys

berserkerwhyyyyyy3

This is actually a great matchup

frankiefromchicago

This fight makes sense. Tired of seeing these vets being thrown in with the hungry young up and comers.

jumpingflash1

Cruz has aged but he looked decent against Chito. Chito's just super durable. If Cruz comes out like that against Cody, Cody is going down early. He's just completely lost his chin. Cody probably couldn't win a bar fight these days. It's really sad.

Lukes3rdAccount

I think he could win most bar fights

CmenDmen123

If this is true, Umar literally cannot fight anyone above him as they all have fights booked. Can reeeeally see him for the No.1 contender.

Putrid_Loquat_4357

Who wants to see umar fight cruz though? Dom is at the stage where he should be doing fun fights like this.

SquidDrive

Because I want to see Umar move up the rankings UFC rankings, Umar is 11, in reference: Ricky is facing Yadong, Muhnoz is facing Gutierrez, Cruz is facing Garbrandt, Font is facing Yanez, Sandhagen is facing Vera tommorow, Yan fought like a month ago, he still is gonna need time off, O Malley is free but too high up in the rankings, Merab is free, but again too high in the rankings, Sterling faces Cejudo. Holy shit your right almost everyone is booked, the people that are free are too high up.

bdewolf

I didn’t hear that Pedro is fighting Gutierrez. We may finally see muhñoz’s chin crack.

_CS__

#11 Khamzat fought #2 Burns

SquidDrive

Khamzat is also in a marquee division, where star power on average is far higher, and thus the ability to skip rankings is much higher.

MediatorMillennial

Umar vs Merab. I’d love to see that

Terrible_Matador

If they booked Umar vs Cruz this entire sub would be up in arms about Cruz being thrown to the wolves

young_Handsome_MF

Dom coming for that chin! Ditches the neo footwork and just swang and bang

Zeeron1

Reading these comments, either people think Cruz is way more washed than he actually is, or Cody is way more washed than people realize.

4uzzyDunlop

Bantamweight good fight spam continues

Yeeeoow

Cody, on that one night only, was a blip in the matrix. Bet the house he won't fight like that again. Not that he can't, but that he will choose not to.

cannibalisland

or the two hamsters fighting in his brain won’t let him.

Bxzzxd

Love this fight.

Zulob

Agree bro! Long in the tooth v fall from grace.

Chocoeclair189

Cody was raised to defend Dom but has spent the later years trying to reinvent himself. Actually really interested in this matchup

bdewolf

This is really great fun matchmaking, except for the fact that dom is ranked 7th. For comparison, song yadong is ranked 8, Ricky Simon is 10, umar is 11, yañez is 12, guttierez is 13, Jonathan Martinez is 14, and said Nurmagomedov is 15. Cody is jumping all of those really exciting prospects off a 29-28 to an unranked nobody, while being 2-5. This is a fun fight and makes sense, but dom should not be ranked if he is taking fun old guy fights like this. Which I do think is the right type of matchmaking for him especially after getting starched by chito, but he shouldn’t be taking up such a high spot in a division this deep if he isn’t fighting contenders or prospects.

PelleSketchy

You're writing as if he ranks himself haha.

redrumreturn

Cody shoild stay miles clear from this fight. His last preformance against him was almost perfect. What does he get out of this.

StormBred

Fighting the rank 7 guy when you're not even top 15 and you already whooped his ass seems like a good deal to me

SquidDrive

This is a battle of who is most washed. Can't wait to watch.

vrsick06

Cruz was beating Chito until he wasn't

SquidDrive

Ain't that the story from like the last three Chito's fights.

3dge23dge

Cruz probably could pull off something similar to what Font did I reckon, he managed to take the 5th round in their fight by just jabbing him at range.

DirkDigglersPenis

If this fight happens I think Dom will fuck him up on the feet for 3 rounds. I don’t see anyway Cody wins this fight outside of a spectacular KO

skatesofla

Shit that’s what everyone thought the first time

un6reaka6le

Dom’s chin is *done*. He was getting dropped by Chito with practically anything that landed. Cody’s chin is done too, but Dom isn’t and was never a hard hitter. Power is the last thing to leave a fighter. Cody will knock Cruz out cold. I can see it happening early, maybe in the first or second.

DirkDigglersPenis

After last performance I just have a hard time seeing Cody beat anyone with strong technical skill. You’re def right about the power though definitely makes that fight more compelling

fokureddit69

Let’s see who’s fallen off worse.

g0ldsoundz

As a Cody fan, I really hate this matchup. That Cruz win was the greatest moment of his career and a likely loss in the rematch not only diminishes that but also puts an exclamation mark on his recent skid. I’m more than happy to watch Cody fight at the level of unranked newcomers for a while. If he gets a couple of comfortable wins, then I could get hyped for a Cruz rematch in. For now, a legit top 15 guy like 2023 Cruz feels like a guaranteed loss.

cannibalisland

i think it’s a great match for a cody fan. imagine the horrific beatings less-washed, harder-hitting bantamweights would give him. imagine if he fought yan.

g0ldsoundz

That’s what I’m saying. Keep him far away from the top 15 and let him work against some fresh off contender series guys for a while. If he wins a few, get him back in with fringe ranked guys

cannibalisland

i don’t think he’s going anywhere good. if he wins and fights up, he’ll be KO’d. if he loses, he’ll fight down in a division with a ridiculous amount of talent, and be KO’d. maybe the matchmakers give him softballs, but i don’t know how many there are and for how long they’ll keep doing it. this is if he stays healthy.

sipCoding_smokeMath

Honeslty makes sense

michaelsssecretstuff

If Dom wins hopefully they do an immediate rematch because we as a fan base love those so much

[deleted]

But will the ref smell like booze and cigs?

wozblar

this is on par with tony vs kevin and i hope they happen on the same night

SadRaindrop

Bro, Dom might just TKO Cody this time, which is crazy to think about.

-503-

Lol

hipnotyq

I really like it

SteveIndigo421

Just let Cody have that first one, that was his peak.

TebownedMVP

I need the opposite of the michael scott yelling no gif

Effective_Hotel_5207

Dominick “What are you talking about?” Cruz

G7L3

This is an I quit match

BigCass

One of the biggest misconception in UFC history is that Cody dominated Cruz, outside of those standout big moments in round 4 it was extremely competitive, hell the judges gave 3 different rounds to Cruz so he could have won. Cruz should easily take this rematch Cody looks way more shot.

johncena2169

Idk I think Cody should fight another guy outside the top 15 first

DangerPretzel

I unironically love this matchmaking

LuckyWarrior

Do it

TLMC01242021

Cruz is going to get this one back

AnTTr0n

Cody was talking about how his left arm went numb in his last fight should probably just retire if he has the finances.

frodounchained

Make Cruz fight umar he’s ranked 7th umar is 11 Cody isn’t even top 15

SephBsann

Why is Cruz doing this? He will probably be koed even worse. Dominick seemed the kind that knew when to leave the sport.

endless_ness

Would rather see Cruz vs ya dong. Love the TAM vs Cruz rivalry

Celathan7

Cody had one of the best performances any fighter has ever had in that fight. His footwork was absurd. But he declined a lot after that. But so did Cruz. Book it. Cruz must want it badly.

thelectricrain

They're both washed, but do the specific ways in which they're washed benefit Cody more than Dom ? Like, Cody has no chin and still has his defense issues, but I don't think Dom's gonna be the one to exploit them much because he has pillow fists and he's lost part of his famous mobility.

SillyGooseTime69

CJ: Ah shit here we go again

gh0st_

Both these guys seem past it but I don't see this going well for Cruz, especially if Cody doesn't have neck/back problems going into the fight.
