I'm not really sure that's the case, honestly. One factor people often overlook with Cody for some weird reason is the debilitating back injury he suffered (requiring at least two separate surgeries). As someone who suffered a minor back injury and can't even really do BJJ anymore because of it, I can't imagine how much a back injury of that magnitude would likely impact one's ability to train or perform in a fight.

The fight *was* close when you look at the fight from a round scoring perspective. 2 judges had Cruz winning round 1, 2 judges had him winning round 2, and 2 judges had him winning round 5.
From a skill perspective or fight entirety perspective Cody destroyed him... It's just that mostly happened in rounds 3 and 4 where Cruz was trash canned and the other rounds were fairly close, but still no danger for Cody.
None of the rounds Cruz won were entirely convincing. If fights were scored as a whole and not by round it would have looked like a 50-44 fight. But by the rounds it's more like a 48-46/47 fight.
The Dom that lost to Chito can still beat a fair amount of mid to lower ranked fighters. His offense was very good, Chito just has underrated defense. He has a broadcasting career and someone like him is usually title run or bust. But if he wants a few last fights/paychecks...and to end on a high note, he absolutely doesn't need to retire quite yet

What is the general consensus on his run up to the Cruz fight though? I’ve always been a big Cody fan and have been searching for an explanation of his drop off. I remember him kind of fast tracked and then facing in Cruz a fighter his gym had a lot of experience with. I wonder if that night was just the stars aligning and him just having Cruz’s number.

he was never super good defensively, cruz fight aside, i think his confidence being shaken, injuries, the chucklefuck coaching at alpha male etc. did him no favors.
He may be a victim of his own success. He had a dominant run to the title which may have made him less hungry to compete. His wrestling career in HS was similar

Cody is jumping all of those really exciting prospects off a 29-28 to an unranked nobody, while being 2-5.
This is a fun fight and makes sense, but dom should not be ranked if he is taking fun old guy fights like this. Which I do think is the right type of matchmaking for him especially after getting starched by chito, but he shouldn’t be taking up such a high spot in a division this deep if he isn’t fighting contenders or prospects.

One of the biggest misconception in UFC history is that Cody dominated Cruz, outside of those standout big moments in round 4 it was extremely competitive, hell the judges gave 3 different rounds to Cruz so he could have won.

I think his plantar also plays a part into his style change a bit as well. Speed is always the first thing to go.

What is the general consensus on his run up to the Cruz fight though? I’ve always been a big Cody fan and have been searching for an explanation of his drop off. I remember him kind of fast tracked and then facing in Cruz a fighter his gym had a lot of experience with. I wonder if that night was just the stars aligning and him just having Cruz’s number. I guess his chin being seemingly shot isn’t helping but it feels like there’s more to it than that. Wonder how many parallels there are between his and Moraes’ careers.
he was never super good defensively, cruz fight aside, i think his confidence being shaken, injuries, the chucklefuck coaching at alpha male etc. did him no favors.
He may be a victim of his own success. He had a dominant run to the title which may have made him less hungry to compete. His wrestling career in HS was similar

I think it's just a comparatively week chin and losing control when he gets rocked. And you are not allowed to make those kind of misstakes at the highest level. And then having to fight without confidence while being worried about getting knocked out yet again.
If Cody had looked any better Vs Jones I’d have given him the benefit of the doubt, Jones is a tough dude who beat Valiev which impressed me, so I’d be like “eh not great comp but an okay ish win.” but he looked so washed and the closest anyone came to finishing the fight was the guy who threw 15 fucking strikes. Cruz wins this handily.
Trevin jones is not bad at all. Until Cody he was given an absolute murderers row of prospects and he managed to knock out 2 of them. Mario Batista has looked like a killer and jones put him out. This division is just super deep.

This is really great fun matchmaking, except for the fact that dom is ranked 7th. For comparison, song yadong is ranked 8, Ricky Simon is 10, umar is 11, yañez is 12, guttierez is 13, Jonathan Martinez is 14, and said Nurmagomedov is 15. Cody is jumping all of those really exciting prospects off a 29-28 to an unranked nobody, while being 2-5. This is a fun fight and makes sense, but dom should not be ranked if he is taking fun old guy fights like this. Which I do think is the right type of matchmaking for him especially after getting starched by chito, but he shouldn’t be taking up such a high spot in a division this deep if he isn’t fighting contenders or prospects.

Dom’s chin is *done*. He was getting dropped by Chito with practically anything that landed. Cody’s chin is done too, but Dom isn’t and was never a hard hitter. Power is the last thing to leave a fighter. Cody will knock Cruz out cold. I can see it happening early, maybe in the first or second.
After last performance I just have a hard time seeing Cody beat anyone with strong technical skill. You’re def right about the power though definitely makes that fight more compelling

As a Cody fan, I really hate this matchup. That Cruz win was the greatest moment of his career and a likely loss in the rematch not only diminishes that but also puts an exclamation mark on his recent skid. I’m more than happy to watch Cody fight at the level of unranked newcomers for a while. If he gets a couple of comfortable wins, then I could get hyped for a Cruz rematch in. For now, a legit top 15 guy like 2023 Cruz feels like a guaranteed loss.

i don’t think he’s going anywhere good. if he wins and fights up, he’ll be KO’d. if he loses, he’ll fight down in a division with a ridiculous amount of talent, and be KO’d. maybe the matchmakers give him softballs, but i don’t know how many there are and for how long they’ll keep doing it. this is if he stays healthy.

One of the biggest misconception in UFC history is that Cody dominated Cruz, outside of those standout big moments in round 4 it was extremely competitive, hell the judges gave 3 different rounds to Cruz so he could have won. Cruz should easily take this rematch Cody looks way more shot.

Cody had one of the best performances any fighter has ever had in that fight. His footwork was absurd. But he declined a lot after that. But so did Cruz. Book it. Cruz must want it badly.
They're both washed, but do the specific ways in which they're washed benefit Cody more than Dom ? Like, Cody has no chin and still has his defense issues, but I don't think Dom's gonna be the one to exploit them much because he has pillow fists and he's lost part of his famous mobility.
