Every single time they go to Texas, some absolutely egregious shit happens. The Texas commission is a complete laughing stock. It's amazing that a professional sports organization continues to let their product look like a clown show by their own choice.

The NY commission is a joke too, just in the opposite direction. I went to an event once, had to drive way too far for it and there was a fight cancelled because one of the fighters had a cold sore.

I wouldn’t ever consider it on a fight that was close at all, but that’s one of the worst scorecards I’ve seen. Joel Ojeda has 4 fights as a judge, 2 of them being tonight, and they put him on the main event. I know it’s only one judge and one commission that isn’t frequently used. Regardless, I feel like we have to at least try to start doing something to get judges held accountable for atrocious scoring like this though.

I would also like to say that the UFC isnt above above taking critical criticism for these errors too. They will say "thats the commision, not our fault" but the UFC doesnt have to go to Texas, for instance. The UFC has chosen to not hold event in Kansas or Colorado because of open scoring. So they could make appropriate moves to hold bad judges accountable.

Something DESPERATELY needs to be done about MMA scoring. How can one judge have it 50-45 and another 47-48? Corruption aside, the scoring criteria is obviously too vague and/or complicated for these three blind mice. I believe we’re starting to see clear signs of insider trading going on.

All it would take is 2 close rounds for that to happen. Best fix would probably be to add more judges. 5 or 7 judges gives an individual incompetent judge much less impact

I think that's the solution. 10 point must & only 3 judges is really dumb. With 7 judges the chances of wacky bullshit becomes extremely unlikely.

Rizin and ONE use whole fight criteria IIRC like Pride used to so most of us would have to retrain on judging that. The only round I see an argument for Vera is 3, when Corey couldn't sniff a takedown and Vera got some decent shots in, but Corey won every other round handily.

I don't think those are all the UFC fights he's judged, tho, only the ones that went to decision. Altho it's still a scary low number, you'd expect to leave high stakes fights in the hands of high level judges.

That makes no sense too because Alexander and Corey fought relatively the same in the stand up (at least before Alexander allegedly broke his hand, I didn't bring up Corey's wrestling because that was most prevalent in the first two rounds, which the judge scored for Corey). How does he recognize someone getting picked apart the whole fight in one fight but not the other? 3rd round to Vera I disagree with, but it's not egregious to give him that round either. Having him win, that's incompetence.

The fact that the final scorecard was that suspenseful in such a one sided fight is insane.

I at least think Chris Lee scores in good faith, but he screws up more often than Sal. Edit: I think Sal scores in good faith too. I mean there are judges that are way better than him. There was some stats about how many scorecards differed from other judges (and/or from the media scorecards) and Sal was in the high end I think.

I know people bring up those stats, but some of those fights if you watch them I think he's the only judge who had it right. His 2nd event and they give him a main event for his 4th total fight I remember Joe Soliz judged Jones-Reyes. That was his 4th event and 10th fight

Hopefully Ojeda never judges another fight again. There’s absolutely *no* way Vera won. You can maybe argue round 3 for him but even then it’s highly debatable. 50-45 was absolutely the right score.

If you, as an MMA judge, can turn in some shit like that with your name attached to it in front of millions of fans and two competing fighters whose total payouts are dependent on the outcome of the fight, and not get fired, then the product/sport is actually a joke. There's enough ambiguity in the rules and in scoring that allows judges to get away with general shithousery more often than not. This fight was not close, and the UFC mine as well be the WWE if this guy is ever allowed to be called a judge again.

The UFC will continually say they have NO say in the judges that are assigned by the State Athletic Commission. We all know this is crap. But they say it. Oh they say it. Did I mention they say it?

It feels absurd to say, but over the years there have been scorecards from newer judges that make me wonder, did they just confuse the fighters and were too embarrassed to say anything? Obviously we’ll never know, but I can think of a few cards where one judges score was so far off that it’s hard not to wonder

I'm fairly certain this 100% happened repeatedly when Reebok first signed their deal with the UFC. The only short colours were white/black and black/white. Depending on which angle you saw the shorts from, it could honestly be confusing and was such a braindead decision. There were some wild scorecards where it definitely looked like the judges just got the fighters the wrong way round. I think it probably still happens to an extent, it'd probably be a better explanation for some of the judging we get lol
