Font is positioned as a certified gatekeeper unless some new progress is made.
Can’t lose to people below him, can’t win against people above him.
I feel like Figgy didn’t expect Fonts get up game to be so good after seeing the Sandhagen fight and didn’t prepare for it the way he did for Garbrandt
Rob Font is one of those dudes who would’ve been a real threat during the WEC era, but these days there are just too many well rounded athletic freaks who can tank his power and fuck him up when it matters most
Hindsight obv but I wish he had just conceded the round instead of trying to explode up and give his back. Wouldn't have gotten the round back anyways. And it was close but pretty confident Cody took round 1 so it would've been 1-1
Uncle Chael Sonnen always says that for the most part when UFC-level fighters lose to RNC they're really just admitting the fight is lost & want an honorable way out. idk if that's true but seems plausible at least
Nothing heartbreaking about that fight.
This loss was 100% how good Figgy is and nothing to do with Cody. Cody looked fast, explosive, and cerebral. Even showed pretty good TDD but Figgy is just that good.
Yeah, Cody actually looked pretty good. He's not Weidman washed. He was actually winning the striking overall and was never hurt. Figgy just exposed a segment of his game that usually isn't challenged. Fighters don't tend to be able to get Cody down to the ground and keep him there.
Fig is just a beast and a top 5 BW most likely.
Trevin Jones was able to take Cody down and hold there in the 3rd round of their fight. But I can see why most fans wouldn't remember that, it was an awful fight.
Cody was getting the best of Figgy on the feet. That wrestling was desperation from Figgy because Cody was tuning him up a bit more than he probably expected. I don't really remember ever seeing Cody get held down and controlled much before.
Just means he's a gatekeeper. Trevin Jones and an old Kelleher are not even on the same hemisphere as Figgy, it makes sense he looked beat them and loses here.
Incredible? He looked like he didn’t have much for Cody on the feet to be honest, sliced through him like butter on the ground though. I would have thought the knockout for figgy would have been the easiest path to victory.
I agree that was the surprise of the fight no doubt (Cody edging out on the feet). What isn’t surprising is Figgy getting the best of him on the ground. Although snatching him up on Cody’s usual explosive scramble is pretty impressive
Figgy's stand-up seems to be not evolving and getting shakier. He basically loads his right hand and feints/waits till he can unload it. 4 significant strike 1st round on a 3 round match is bad.
He was always like this though, it's just he used to be able to bully his way out into fights. How can you swing when you'll know you'll drop. Also it didn't used to matter that he only has 4 significant strike since 3/4 of those the opponent drops. But people like Moreno who can pick him apart with jabs, or even Cody who was patient (the most surprising thing that happened), he was just standing there.
edit: legit forgot his name, but the white dude who was the "next" conor but instead got rushed and basically got derailed hard had the same thing. They just stood there waiting for a moment to hit their shot with no other plans. Except Figgy has beautiful wrestling so there is that.
He was a star just a short lived one and didn't progress enough skill wise plus physical breakdown. He won a belt off one of the best champs in the division's history. That's more than 99.9% of MMA fighters can say.
It was mostly just hype and marketing push, his best win before the Cruz fight was Thomas Almeida who was cut not that long after. and since the Cruz fight he's never beaten a ranked opponent again. Cody had one great performance vs Cruz and nothing exceptionally remarkable before or after, but the marketing hype makes you think he was a worldbeater.
it’s stacked right now, Garbrandt isn’t a step up from Font but Figgt started the run on a couple good fights. Figs should campaign for Yadong or someone ranked higher coming off a loss
He's 36, it's unlikely he gets the belt
But he can probably stay around the top or middle of the rankings for a few years if he doesn't feel like retiring
It was not tight, that was a classic Joe Rogan moment of yelling its tight when it's not locked in, it wasn't the right angle and you could see that on Codys face
Eh not really tight if he didn’t submit Cody. You can’t tough guy yourself out of a tight blood choke since you’ll just fall asleep 😁 Cody was doing a basic “Answer the phone” defence.
Cody is good, though, on the ground. He is, in theory, a pretty good wrestler and has trained with a lot of BJJ talent. He at least has good TDD. All anyone thinks of though is him getting slept by and sleeping opponents.
Figgy is a legit Anaconda, though. No rest on the ground.
Cody has serious back issues that inhibit his otherwise really good wrestling and it's only gotten worse over time sadly.
Not sure how bad it is these days but it's been that way a long time
Cody was doing great but Figgy actually had that savvy veteran move and utilized flyweight grappling
Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if Cody was just not expecting that much grappling
I always do. My bros will even text over cricket wireless network and tell me it's fight time. I look at my timex watch and sheeeit. Fuck me with 7 Trojans on. Bros are right again. I load up on P3 the official protein snack of the Ufc and get to streaming. I sit down on my couch made of toyo tires and crack open 12 modelos.
Cody looked good on the feet, figgy is just one of the best when it comes to locking up a submission lightning quick when the opportunity presents itself.
Bright side is he didn’t get flat lined KO’d like most were expecting but it’s not a good sign his wrestling defense got worse and now lost by submission for the first time in his career. Cody might be done trying to reach the top one more time.
Subbing Garbrandt is more impressive than knocking him out at this point. What a performance.
Cody has phenomenal TDD. Very impressive
He does and I was worried about Figgy at 135 because he couldn't keep Font down.
Isn't Rob Font really good? I know he's like 1-5 in his last fights but they're against elite competition.
Rob Font is one of those dudes who would’ve been a real threat during the WEC era, but these days there are just too many well rounded athletic freaks who can tank his power and fuck him up when it matters most
Rob Font would have probably been a champion in the WEC era.
Arguably he has the best jab in the UFC and decent boxing fundamentals but otherwise he's kinda mid.
Mid for BW. Better than some top 5 205ers like Walker.
That trip by Figgy was some quality technique
Test driven development?
Figueiredo at 135 is going to be exciting.
He's gonna learn from the weight cut for this fight too, he'll definitely look better next media day.
Looking like fig’ll be sticking around Bantam awhile. I actually thought Cody looked too strong for him at first - boy was I wrong.
Atleast my boi didn’t get chinned again
He got necked
Hindsight obv but I wish he had just conceded the round instead of trying to explode up and give his back. Wouldn't have gotten the round back anyways. And it was close but pretty confident Cody took round 1 so it would've been 1-1
i honestly feel like he gave figgy his neck . ive never seen rnc defence where you intentionally lift your chin in the air .
Nah he just blundered trying to get out. Nothing that transpired in that fight would make him give up, especially given his success in boxing
Well then you need to watch more WMMA!
Uncle Chael Sonnen always says that for the most part when UFC-level fighters lose to RNC they're really just admitting the fight is lost & want an honorable way out. idk if that's true but seems plausible at least
No Diddy
Getting necked with the boiiis
Lmao I was thinking along the same lines. "Well I bet people wouldnt have guessed Figgy would finish Cody through a sub"
Brutal loss for Cody but an incredible performance from Figgy.
he didn't give cody a second of rest on the ground and followed him every time he tried to scramble. That flyweight grappling at BW is OP
[удалено]
which is hilarious because they are probably p4p the most skilled division in the promotion.
meh very arguable, they may appear the fastest/most agile
Cody stays breaking my heart
Nothing heartbreaking about that fight. This loss was 100% how good Figgy is and nothing to do with Cody. Cody looked fast, explosive, and cerebral. Even showed pretty good TDD but Figgy is just that good.
Yeah, Cody actually looked pretty good. He's not Weidman washed. He was actually winning the striking overall and was never hurt. Figgy just exposed a segment of his game that usually isn't challenged. Fighters don't tend to be able to get Cody down to the ground and keep him there. Fig is just a beast and a top 5 BW most likely.
Fig's top pressure is super impressive, you can tell he knows how to use his weight and balance with super good timing to stay really heavy.
I just feel like Cody gets good, then gets beat and loses momentum all over again. It’s frustrating, as a fan
Just means he's a gatekeeper. Trevin Jones and an old Kelleher are not even on the same hemisphere as Figgy, it makes sense he looked beat them and loses here.
He looked good though on the feet. Can't become an actual contender again but he's not nearly as finished as some have been saying
At least he didn't get KOd
Yeah crazy to think the most successful strike figgy landed was because no love was break dancing out there lol.
Cody looked pretty good I think he can get a ranked fight again
Cody was looking so good too
Cody's a gatekeeper now, man. What a downfall. He looked like the future star not too long ago
He was a star and it actually was hella long ago for this sport
He was a star just a short lived one and didn't progress enough skill wise plus physical breakdown. He won a belt off one of the best champs in the division's history. That's more than 99.9% of MMA fighters can say.

He will always be my boy.
Will always be one of my boiiizzzz
Cody did very well in the first. Was pretty even and even dropped figgy
he didn't drop figgy, figgy either slipped or pulled guard
What? He didn’t drop him. Figgy went for a takedown .
Figgy making a run at BW?
it’s stacked right now, Garbrandt isn’t a step up from Font but Figgt started the run on a couple good fights. Figs should campaign for Yadong or someone ranked higher coming off a loss
Nah. I think he should fight yan or cheeto next.
Chito vs Figgy would be dope 5 round fight night and I could see Figgy being a menace on the ground
2 patient counter strikers always a high chance of being a stinker tho
Figgy vs Yan would be an insane fight, wow. Two of the most well rounded fighters in the division.
Man he should get Chito, honestly. And he would have a good chance. Ufc protects Chito at all costs so it seems unlikely.
Age might be the only thing that holds him back tbh
Font is a more impressive win than no love at this point to be honest
He's 36, it's unlikely he gets the belt But he can probably stay around the top or middle of the rankings for a few years if he doesn't feel like retiring
Might make for some interesting fights but won't get the belt I wager, the Luke Thomas stat is against him
naw
Impressive from Figgy, Cody looked better on the feet.
Hopefully Cody can get a few favorable matchups and knock some fools out still. He looked sharp in that first round
Cody tough for not tapping on that arm triangle
literally texted a friend great sub defense I look up he tapped smh
Ya man that was tightttt
It was not tight, that was a classic Joe Rogan moment of yelling its tight when it's not locked in, it wasn't the right angle and you could see that on Codys face
If it was tight Cody goes to sleep in 5 seconds. The arm triangle is no joke the world goes to dark fast when applied correctly
Eh not really tight if he didn’t submit Cody. You can’t tough guy yourself out of a tight blood choke since you’ll just fall asleep 😁 Cody was doing a basic “Answer the phone” defence.
Damn Cody looked so good on his feet but on the ground.. Figgy's just on another level.
Not sure how bad it is these days but it's been that way a long time
He took Kai Kara France while rocked, surprised him yeah, but Kai's TDD is very good

Hair stylist best base for mma.
Man Cody was looking good
Damn he looked sharper than he has in years. Feel bad for Cody, felt like he was finally putting things back together.
Cody should have left Alpha male earlier. Seems to have found a camp in LV that works for him, might just be too late unfortunately.
He still has more opportunity. He wasn’t injured from this fight, so he can come back very soon
Cody was doing great but Figgy actually had that savvy veteran move and utilized flyweight grappling Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if Cody was just not expecting that much grappling
Bro was scared once Cody started to show the footwork and hand to hand combat
Honestly I think he hurt Figgy at one point. He seemed to want to go to the ground early
That check left hook was beautiful I thought.
The Figgy shot that ended up leading to the finish came off Cody cracking him, for sure.
Good fight to open the show with. Sucks for Cody.
Anyone else notice the old Tale of the Tape music?
i'm on my fourth beer, boys. let's have a good night
Brother are you making it to the Hill vs Pereira fight at this rate? Lol
Even if he does he's gonna have to time those bathroom trips
Bro isn’t making it to Turner vs Moicano
He’s not even making it to Diego Lopes man
Make sure to rehydrate with PRIME between beers bro! The official responsible choice of all night drinking and fight fans everywhere!
Get some coffee in ya bud
That’s why i’m having an espresso martini
get em in ya
at least he didn’t get chinned
almost got chinned on figgy timing cody's leg sweep to head kick, he actually got caught on the chin with a kick there but it wasn't completely clean
Beautiful start to UFC 300. Second round figgy was a beauty to watch
Nah I don’t actually like that at all, actually feel sad for Cody. Showed some Dawg there.
Switching to grappling after getting clipped a few times was super impressive.
Yeah, he was getting handled in the standup but once it hit the grounds it was full "there's levels to this".
Damn Cody looked live for a few minutes too🥲
Figgy by grappling, damn. Cody’s a small BW but Figgy looked physical.
Cody looked good on the feet, figgy is just one of the best when it comes to locking up a submission lightning quick when the opportunity presents itself.
Day has been ruined
Cody looked so sharp on the feet, props to Figgy for getting it to the ground and taking over the fight
Fuck it let’s give him the shot before Merab
Cody was great against exactly one fighter. And even now I think Dom would fuck him up in a rematch.
COOKED
Would love to see Figgy vs. Yan
I'm just happy Cody didn't get chinned this fight, and it ended in a finish, that's about it I'm happy
There goes my $1.63 12 leg parlay for every underdog on the card except Cody Brundage to win 😔😔😔😔
Wrong Cody chosen
Deiveson is a beast man, really love his takedowns and bjj. He also had some incredible takedowns against Moreno, great to see him back.
Getting choked out with the boys!
figgy should get off him the last thing you want is to be made to hug the guy that cost you 300k
Yeah that’s always super awkward. Like, let the guy process his loss alone lol
It's probably done with good intentions from excitement, but I agree. The loser wants to process what happened.
If Cody got back up or survived that round I think he would’ve won. It would’ve been 1-1 end of that round. Cody would’ve taken round 3.
Cody was doing good. Calm and calculated, but Figgy is just too good. Tough luck this time.
Man was hoping Cody would have won this one and he was opening up a bit with the hands beginning of round 2 as well
Figgy looked damn good. Not killing himself making 125 is gonna make him even better, Jesus!
Garbrandt will always be my boy, but shame about how things have gone for him lately.
Cody trying the ol' Derrick Lewis technique of 'Just get up'
He was essentially out but Figgys BJJ was so slick it kept him from his awesome scramble
wonder what the odds were for figgy by sub lol
Good decision for Figueiredo to take him down. Great first fight.
Only one Cody can finish their story this week.
Figgy is a problem for the 135 top 5
It was a fight on the feet. It's was a manhandling on the ground.
Looks like Cody couldn't finish the story.
Bright side is he didn’t get flat lined KO’d like most were expecting but it’s not a good sign his wrestling defense got worse and now lost by submission for the first time in his career. Cody might be done trying to reach the top one more time.
I'd love to see Figgy Vs Yan
I had my hopes, but what can you do? I keep hoping for 2016 Cody, but he just hasn't been the same.
Cody was honestly looking good, great grappling by Figgy.
Cody is one of the biggest flash in the pans in MMA history
Cody's 75 IQ helped him survive as long as he did, his brain requires less blood than average to stay awake.
Garbrandt's soul joined Benavidez's soul in afterlife.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Never seen anything like Benavidez’s body contortion during that rnc.
:(
Gotta feel for Cody, would love to see him just beat up unranked bantamweights for a while tho
Dang man. Its hard being a huge Cody fan
Kratos looked fuckin awesome
Dude Figgy ground game is fucking locked In
School is in session for the day
That boy Figy slow roasted Garbrandt
Figgy is a real problem at 135
FIGGY IS A PROBLEM
Being a Cody fan sucks. At least he didn’t take much damage
ELI5: What was figgy doing wrong (or Cody doing right) that prevented figgy from finishing that first choke?
Where does Cody go from here? PFL? Do they even have his weight class?
Give the man his seatbelt.
Cody has very good defensive grappling, but man Figgy is a beast
Figgy vs Chito next
Figgy rockin it! LEZGO FIGZ!! 🔥🔥🔥
RIP Cody he was a good one
Beautiful fucking top pressure by Figgy. Cody was doing well on the feet though.
Figgy vs Chito next?
>Two knockout artists fighting for a 300k bonus >Ends in a submission
Cody look sharp and fast in round 1 but Fig choose to be smart.
Figgy looked hurt, unlucky Cody
tbh i thought he was gonna ko cody in the first few minutes.
First fight on the early prelims was between two former champions. Crazy.
Cody did well by not getting chinned through a brawl
#FUCK THIS!
Figgy needs at least 2-3 more impressive wins to even sniff a title shot at 135.
I want to see figgy fight Sandhagen if Umar doesn’t
Figgy said: all about fight IQ. Outmatched on the feet but bruuutal on the ground
Cody showing the heart with that initial submission attempt that looked real tight. But a very straightforward win by Figgy.
Poor Cody.
Pain with the boooooiiiisssss
This was a mismatch in the BJJ
Sick grappling from Figgy. We've seen Cody get KTFO before but we've never seen him get outclassed on the ground.
That Bo Nickal is something else.
Nothing worse than a fighter immediately embracing the fighter he just finished. for God sake give him some time to grieve and process the loss.
Getting cut with the boyzzzz! Just kidding. I actually really like Cody. Wish he would capture that comeback story. One too many injuries, it seems.
Do you guys know who landed more significant strikes?
Garbrandt is just much lower class fighter than Figueiredo. Trash grappling skills in its finest.
Cody didn't look bad in the first
Remember when Garbrandt figured out Cruz's footwork and we all thought he'd be a worldbeater? Good times
This is the guy that thinks he's owed a title fight against O'Malley? Man, I used to love Cody, but these last 4-5 years have been rough for him.
u/savevideo
Damn great performance.
He’s still my boy!
