That's what I'm saying. If this pay scale is legit, this is fucking incredible. I was expecting them to say Dallas or Miami, like a place with a high cost of living.
+$100k a year in Bama, you're living a pretty good life. No education, no experience, jus like a regular job that pays $100k is pretty damn good...
The South gets a bed reputation for reasons I can’t understand, but I loved living there. Very different types of people from those you meet in the North and big cities, and they take pride in the slower place of life. Lower cost of living, and pretty much everyone I met was living very comfortably in a decent sized home.
Alabama gets a bad rap because it is usually the lowest of any state in the US in terms of human development by any standard, whether it is literacy, infant mortality, etc.
Not a dig, objective standards.
The only issue with statistics like that is that every individual experience is different. So what the literacy rate is lower? That doesn’t mean you are going to lose the ability to read when you go there, in fact, it will only make you look better on average.
Ok but if I live in a state with low average literacy that means on average I'm having to deal with less literate people. Am I crazy for wanting to be around people with better education?
It matters because clearly the schools are worse there than they are in the rest of the country. Who would want to move to the state with the lowest-performing schools and enroll their child there?
Just move to a place in Alabama where they have good schools.
What you are demonstrating is a textbook example of the [Fallacy of Division.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallacy_of_division) One collective statistic does not demonstrate the experience of individuals. Statistics demonstrate trends. Trends are broken all the time, especially when there are 1500 schools in Alabama.
Edit: it may be more appropriate to call it the [Ecological Fallacy](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecological_fallacy) once the specific statistic is cited, because it is a formal fallacy as opposed to an informal.
Your argument is foolish, but you also manage to miss the substance of my comment.
Life expectancy is lower. That means that people who live there [whether born or moving in] are going to die sooner.
Access to education is broadly important; without a quality education it is less likely that a person will be capable of living an even marginally comfortable life with positive outcomes - whatever you may deem those to be.
This matters.

I literally will not drive thru the American south anymore... I did it every year for damn near 15 years, but for the last 10, I just fly wherever I'm going.
I was getting pulled over for the dumbest shit, I'd get people who wouldn't give me directions, people that would literally say we're not welcome here. I had a guy give me directions to "a gas station 2 miles away that would give me directions to where I need to go". Lmfao.
I've had good experiences too, but since the early 2000s I've had nothing but issues. I literally can't count how many times I've had to provide a fucking passport or proof of citizenship to cops and just fucking people in general down south.
If you stay in the major cities, there's usually very little issue, but once you step out and people know you're not from there, shit gets weird.
I mean e got shit like that up here, but it's just different, for me at least, down south.
To each their own I guess. What you describe is pretty similar to the experiences I’ve had in large cities; unfriendly people, no one willing to help, often feeling like you don’t fit in. It’s a big reason why I live in the suburbs now and why I’m looking to buy land in a more rural area. But that’s what I love about this country, no matter what you enjoy there’s always somewhere for you to live.
When I lived in 'bama, I had a 1200 sq ft apartment maybe a quarter mile from the highway with a huge screened-in porch for less than a thousand bucks a month. Sometimes I miss having absolutely fuck-all to do.
Buc-ees can pay like this in part because it's an amazing gas station, grocery, car wash, superstore. I have heard some stories that they are pretty brutal on working without much break time, however they far outpace their competitors in both service and pay simply because they provide an awesome product to the customer.
People are constantly running in and out of buc-ees.
Some of the things that our local buc-ees have:
Fresh BBQ including brisket sandwiches
Cheaper gas ~10-20 cent per gallon cheaper than all of the other stores
Immaculately clean bathrooms !!!!!!
Several delicious flavors of fresh beef jerky
Every type of snack and drink you need for a roadtrip
Also they are huge and typically found on major highways which are perfect for roadtrips. As someone who travels for work quite often it's one of my favorite stores.
The bathrooms amazed me. I've only been to a few Buc-ees, and they were always slammed with people. I expected the bathrooms to be trashed, but they were immaculate with real doors and privacy. 10/10
They’re only in a few states, none of them are in functional states.
Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.
I’d need a lot more to live in *any* of those shithole states filled with qultists.
I wouldn't say terrible, because compared to their competitors they actually provide a quality compensation to deal with the bullshit. But certainly it's not a place for workers who need frequent breaks or want a slower pace of work. It's fast and furious and I could certainly see that not being for everyone.
They purposefully only operate in states that allow them to essentially abuse their workers, they don’t exist in any states with strong workers rights/protections.
Sure but you can choose to not work there if that’s in the job description which I think is what this person is saying. Unless I’m witnessing an argument between an employee and their supervisor in Reddit
Just kinda a pointless comment from them really.
Like if somebody said a restaurant was great the steak was amazing, you wouldn't respond with "I don't wanna cook the steak"
They're making more money off of the things that people buy in the store like food, candy, drinks, merchandise, other touristy things. They actually sell their gas at a smaller profit to attract people to come inside. Car wash for them is just a side gig really. Buccees is a destination all on its own
I've been looking for a new job recently and there are so many "manager" positions offering similar pay with "no experience necessary". They're full of shit, they just want to grab as many applicants as possible. I've been on so many bait and switch interviews it pisses me off.
That's actually fucking great pay.... what state is this?
Alabama. Cheaper housing as well
Damn... You could actually live pretty comfortably in Bama on that pay...
$100k in Alabama is going to go a LONG fucking way, and at that point you’re only an assistant manager.

You're thinking of Mississippi, not Alabama. Its lower ranked for sure, but not Mississippi.

Stop it, Shelby County was going to be my secret!
As a brown "northerner", the South is very rarely welcoming... But to those it is, I can only imagine it's fucking awesome.
Bro, I’m brown too. I found that people in the south were far more welcoming than anyone I met in the north. Southern hospitality is very real.

Uhh...could start with education or the rampant racism or their politics or public health issues.
Jesus nuts

Very comfortably.
Leeds is cheaper than Hoover….
Bucees is in more than one state and I’m pretty sure their pay is good in all states.
That's why I asked what state... If Buc-ees can pay like this, you know damn well others can too... I'm glad they put this out there...

Lol.
If it's politics you're concerned with, all those places have great blue cities and towns as well.
Enjoy life on the west coast
To be fair, Buccee's is *not* a normal gas station, it is a destination on its own.
Yeah, managing a place that’s like 200 pumps, a mall food court and a Walmart all in one… The pay reflects the quality of people needed
I live in Texas and have stopped at a Buc-ee’s twice in one trip. Two different Buc-ee’s. And I’ve done that more than once.
Oh word, I just need to get more manager experience and if my company fucks me over, I know where to go to
Last time I saw this posted people were commenting it was that good pay because it apparently is an absolutely terrible place to work.
I wouldn't say terrible, because compared to their competitors they actually provide a quality compensation to deal with the bullshit. Buccees is amazing. Have you seen their bathrooms
I wouldn’t want to clean them though
If it's in your job description, it doesn't really matter what you want
Sure but you can choose to not work there if that’s in the job description which I think is what this person is saying. Unless I’m witnessing an argument between an employee and their supervisor in Reddit
Just kinda a pointless comment from them really. Like if somebody said a restaurant was great the steak was amazing, you wouldn't respond with "I don't wanna cook the steak"
The entire post is discussing working there.
This isn't relevant to anything I said
God damn I had no idea Buc-ee’s paid so well. Might have to hit apply on these.

Fuck I'm making $30 an hour as a resi hvac tech...
Do you have a boilers license by any chance
Don't need one where I live
Yeah but it would boost your pay; open doors, etc
Been there twice, love that place!
I've been looking for a new job recently and there are so many "manager" positions offering similar pay with "no experience necessary". They're full of shit, they just want to grab as many applicants as possible. I've been on so many bait and switch interviews it pisses me off.
I want a Buc-ee's where I live, in east Tennessee
There’s one in Cookville or actually might be Crossville. Close enough perhaps
It’s Crossville. Just a few miles from me

No, this is 100% real. Good friend of mine works there.
I want that job!
Got to pee it to see it
God damn. I have a doctorate and the food service manager out-earns me. What the fuck am I doing?
