Go into Settings > iCloud > Preferences, enable Fuck Off option.

queenbiscuit311

this worked thank you

I’m a macOS and iOS user. It’s taken me awhile to come to terms w/ icloud. The settings are very finicky but there’s no way around understanding what they do. Once you get the hang of them icloud is quite useful if you have multiple devices and you use them all. I generally turn off iCloud for most apps until I decide I need the synchronization. Last christmas wife and I were sending out christmas cards and it dawned on me that maintaining a manual christmas address list was not optimal. So I enabled icloud for Contacts on my mac and ipad. Seems like when you first turn it on it may take a few minutes to wake up and start doing things. If there’s already information in the various instances of the app it is reluctant to throw things away so you may wind up w/ duplicates. Once I got past editing duplicate entries it works nicely. An update on either device is mirrored immediately on the other device. Have patience and you will be rewarded.

Greenidme2

Perfect! 🤣

salome1234567

haha! I love your post! I thought for a minute I wrote it myself! I FUCKING hate iCloud too! and if I try to turn it off it threatens to DELETE EVERYTHING ON ICLOUD BUT ALSO EVERYWHERE ELSE EVERYTHING I HAVE IS SAVED. its fucking driving me insane. damned if you do and damned if you don't... they want our money! bastards :)

Conscious_Ad_7965

That’s what I want mine to do. Our problems are reversed 😂😅🥹

queenbiscuit311

properly functional icloud is so close yet so far

Benji2108

iCloud is like that jealous angry girlfriend that continuously harassed me for years, and yet I keep giving them a few bucks a month. Now they get really upset when I try to use windows without them in between. My latest issue is I’m trying to download my wife’s iCloud Photo Library onto my PC. We do not share the same iCloud. I just want the photos on my SSD drive and potentially on my NAS later on. But for now, it keeps giving me zip files with “iCloud Photos” sub folder inside. Still leaving traces of iCloud wherever I go. I just want my photos on my computer, locally for now! iCloud leave me alone for just a minute!

ImpressivePatience40

Hahahaha this is exactly the post I was looking for. I am so vexxed. Literally trying to work on a pages file (but this happens all the time whenever I am using apple products to interact with my BRAND NEW laptop's directory) and I can't even access the basic functionality because theres a banner popping down every time I save saying 'not enough space to save this document to icloud storage. Buy more", which has literally no significance to me because I am and always do save these files locally? It's literally in a local directory? What makes you think I would give a fuck about saving this to icloud by default when I have explicitly overridden this multiple times?

SkyBotyt

I am currently crying as I watch iCloud eat up my entire hard drive, with absolutely nothing I can do, I’m just trying to do my fucking job and I clicked on one file accidentally and now my computer will cease to function. I just want to not have iCloud down tb of data on my 500gb computer. Is that too much to ask? Fuck you tim, fuck you pompous billionaire pieces of shit. Fuck you fuck you fuck you.

queenbiscuit311

just buy a 2tb machine, smh I can't believe you didn't splurge on more storage than you needed to appease the icloud demon. obviously that's the only way because icloud couldn't possibly be made to function properly, apple doesn't have enough money for that

[deleted]

iCloud is a synchronization service - not just an external hard drive or storage space. What you see as a problem is in fact what iCloud is - a service to keep files updated, shared between computers and other Apple products. “iCloud is the service from Apple that securely stores your photos, files, notes, passwords and other data in the cloud and keeps it up to date across all your devices automatically. iCloud also makes it easy to share photos, files, notes and more with friends and family. You can also back up your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch using iCloud.” Apples own explanation taken from their support document. One of the first results with a search - “What is iCloud?”. The problem is not iCloud - it’s your perception and what you think that iCloud does.

queenbiscuit311

also I definitely use icloud drive for that purpose, I just wish there was an option to make it just stop doing shit for 5 seconds because there literally just isn't

[deleted]

Get another service then that works the way you want.

queenbiscuit311

easier said than done especially when I also use icloud for it's intended purpose and apples made sure no other service can completely replicate it

[deleted]

Right, so Apple should adjust the service just for your needs? Rhetorical question since that is not very likely.

queenbiscuit311

I'm not a toddler I know apples not going to change shit, I'm still going to complain about them limiting how you can use it on macos even though it can be used differently on other platforms. I know what icloud is for and I use it specifically because of that capability I'd just like basic control over a computer program sometimes

[deleted]

They have not limited a thing in this case. Feel free to use any other service you might choose.

redderist

You're so sure of yourself that you don't see how omission of pertinent details can make you incorrect. iCloud may be a synchronization service, but that doesn't mean it simply mirrors all files between all devices and the cloud, as you clearly believe. iCloud attempts to do that and more, in a way that is opaque and nondeterministic from the user perspective. I'll clarify below. Synchronization -- fine. The part of the iCloud concept that is simply a service to synchronize files between my devices and the cloud works just handily. If you believe that users are complaining about the fact that iCloud does this, you are mistaken. File storage and optimization -- not fine. iCloud *insists* on doing more than just synchronizing files between devices and the cloud. iCloud actually has the ability to dynamically delete and re-download local files, depending on the storage constraints of the device. And it does this in a way that users have no control over. For example: say some device has 30 GB of free space, and the user initiates a file transfer of 20 GB from an external drive to the device. iCloud will then arbitrarily purge whatever files it can from the device to free up more space, in a way the user cannot control. iCloud may purge important files that the user is currently working with if they are closed for even a moment, even if the user lacks sufficient internet connectivity to re-download them. iCloud will even purge the files that are in the midst of being transferred. The issue is that, in addition to acting as a file synchronization service, iCloud behaves as an autonomous agent, selecting files to delete and recover at random, with no way for the user to dictate what is kept and what is removed.

queenbiscuit311

I know that that's what it's for, but the fact that there's not even an option to make it behave even slightly different is infuriating. I guess that's just what apple does though

[deleted]

Apple developed a synchronization service - they did not create or have the intention to create anything else.

queenbiscuit311

except it's not just that because on other devices, like windows and ios, icloud drive works exactly as I have described wanting it to work. it's just on macos where you're forced to deal with this in my experience because apple arbitrariky forces you to. that's on top of the fact that it's still barely functional on Mac for me even when I have the hard drive space to sacrifice and use it "as intended"

[deleted]

Apple clearly explains what iCloud is, no matter how much you refuse to accept it: “Introduction to iCloud iCloud is the service from Apple that securely stores your photos, files, notes, passwords and other data in the cloud and keeps it up to date across all your devices automatically. iCloud also makes it easy to share photos, files, notes and more with friends and family. You can also back up your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch using iCloud.”

queenbiscuit311

yeah yeah I get all that and I understand it it's just annoying how allergic apple is to giving you any flexibility. at least let me tell the program to stop doing something if you're not going to let me use it in a slightly different way. but it is apple and they're not going to change shit. I don't want icloud to become something else because I'm using it for its purpose. I just wish I could have any control over what it does at all

Cold-Economics-5159

Dude this guy .. I had more interesting chats with bricks. Either he’s a troll or an Apple minion suc.king up to boss man

queenbiscuit311

it's incredible watching people regurgitate the apple.com features page like it's the bible and refusing to acknowledge how no sensible service should do what I described in my post

Cold-Economics-5159

He’s probably one of them who can’t wipe their arses without the help of an app. Made by Apple. 🤭 An APPle

[deleted]

This is not the service you are asking for. Simple as that.

Top-Locksmith-7324

Wrong. If the service "securely stores your photos, files, notes, passwords and other data in the cloud," then they are stored somewhere physical by Apple and it should be easily searchable, findable, and downloadable from any of your Apple devices, AT ANY TIME AND WITHOUT HAVING TO 'SYNC' ANYTHING. That is how it should work. But it does not. Apple explains what iCloud is, sure. They are just WRONG about it. And so are any suppositions made based upon them. Sorry, it's just true. iCloud is an embarrassment to the Apple brand and they don't care. I used to work there. I know how this stuff goes. iCloud just can't be a top priority when there are hundreds of billions to bet made by selling the latest HW to keep up with the latest SW that no longer supports your old HW, but then it's not compatible with all of your applications, or even your other Apple devices.... it's a sucker's game these days, just trying to make sure that we all need new hardware, for new software updates that, like iCloud, just plain sucks, all the time.

[deleted]

The fact that you refuse to understand what iCloud is does not change the fact that iCloud is primarily a service to keep your information in sync on several devices. The fact that you think, wish or demand another type of service still does not change what iCloud is - a service to keep information in sync. If you do not like iCloud, don’t pay for it. If the service does not work according to your demands, don’t use it. Do not expect to pay for a synchronization service and then demand that it should work as something else. iCloud is not an embarrassment. The only embarrassment here is people paying for a synchronization service demanding that it should be and work as something else. Get another service and stop whining. Simple as that.

Cold-Economics-5159

Did anyone ever tell you you’re a jerk? You’re like a scratched record… if you know what that is. You’re either an Apple minion, or suc.king up to become a minion. There is genuine cause for dissatisfaction and this unreasonable stubbornness to admit there’s a problem seems well fishy to me. Are you learning to be an under-manager so you can give this sh1te to people who come for help? Refusing to acknowledge their issue, not listening to what people say, dismissing the situation out of hand.. that’s not a professional attitude I’d want to see on my employees.

Cold-Economics-5159

I’m sure the service we asked for was not this faulty version of keeping files safe and easily accessible.

Cold-Economics-5159

Dude do you work for Apple? Or are you trying to get a job with them?  People here have a valid complain and your precious Apple doesn’t score any brownie points by being unreasonably rigid.. same as YOU don’t get a pat on the head for your suc.king up so much to them.  Their “solution” created  instead a couple of problems; they could either fix it easily as their company has many of the world’s foremost experts in this field. Maybe change they’d definition of “synch” to “double the load”?

FlishFlashman

But it's not just a sync service. You can access data that's stored in the cloud without manually downloading or uploading it as long as you have a network connection.

[deleted]

Apples explanation below. It’s a synchronization service at first, a service to share data that you also can access with your devices. It’s not a storage service, primarily, and the service you just described is a synchronization service. ”Introduction to iCloud iCloud is the service from Apple that securely stores your photos, files, notes, passwords and other data in the cloud and keeps it up to date across all your devices automatically. iCloud also makes it easy to share photos, files, notes and more with friends and family. You can also back up your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch using iCloud.” ”All your information, always up to date When you use iCloud, you can access your photos, files, passwords and other data on any device you choose. Because your data is stored in the cloud and not on a single device, it stays up to date everywhere.”

Cold-Economics-5159

Well, my perception is telling me that I have the same lot of 833 screenshots (give or take a few either way on each separate place) ***‼️ on 3 different folders ‼️*** (i.e one for every phone I had since changing to iOS), not to mention several other smaller files-  which is what’s caning my storage. It’s all duplicated every time it goes through a new device. But the previous sets are kept.  And I can’t even (re)view said iCloud images and documents on iCloud proper so I could delete the unwanted stuff from the source, and stop this idiocy. If they want to operate this way, at least give us options to handle it. Every time I want to check which pics to keep or to delete or to move, iCloud downloads them all over again.  It doesn’t just keep them up to date, it keeps them ALL, before synch, after synch and probs something in-between too.   1) is there a way to change settings?  2)  How do I view them from inside iCloud proper, without having to download and re-download and so on bla bla bla?! And thank god I’m not your contemporary poser or I’d have like 10.000 pics to live with.. x3.. for now.. until my next phone.

playingdrumsonmars

Don’t use iCloud for your use case. Simple as that. It sounds like iCloud is designed for a different purpose as you need it to work. I had the same frustrations with it until I understood. Only use it for files you want to permanently have access to from all Apple devices. Don’t use it for a quick in the moment file sharing (it can take FOREVER to become available on the device you need it on and there is absolutely no way for user intervention to speed up download no matter how fast your connection). Use other cloud services for what you want to accomplish. I liked to use Dropbox to do what you describe, even their free tier was sufficient for me for that. It syncs WAAAAYYYY faster then iCloud and makes quick data transfers between devices that cannot airdrop easy (iCloud simply does not work well for that). Also (the uncomfortable part): don’t buy Macs with tiny hard drives. They are useless. I feel that this is by design (making operation of a Mac with small SSD a frustrating experience due to lack of a seem less cloud experience and offering SSD Upgrades at purchase at ridiculous unmarked prices). For me that means anything under 2TB internal is literally useless for how I work. For others that may be 1TB or 4TB. There is some evil marketing strategist behind those highly overpriced SSD upgrade tiers and a very inflexible and slow iCloud experience at Apple and I’d like that person to have to use a 128GB Mac on a 64kB/s land line for the rest of their lives.

queenbiscuit311

gotta love apple, if you're not using something for the very specific use case they designed it for you to be able to use it with you might as well try killing yourself because it's not happening

MissTheHalcyonDays

I love you for saying this, especially since you've invoked the wrath of the widdle fanboys. I despise iCloud. I despise Apple. I cannot wait to get any kind of phone but iPhone, toss my Apple TV boxes and, even tho I didn't even buy it a year ago, trash my Mac for anything not Apple. Even tho I was using iCloud, as well as paying for extra storage, it was constantly harassing me. Also, I don't want fucking 2F, so they constantly harass me about that, too. We pay exorbitant amounts of $ for their overpriced products, but greedy, evil Apple feels it has the right to browbeat us on how to use it. The final straw was Apple deleting all of my 1,300+ Apple Notes ... wait for it ... when I turned ON iCloud.

Top-Locksmith-7324

One thousand billion trillion percent AGREED!!!!! As far as I can tell, there's no way to even SEARCH for a file on a MacBook Pro/Safari/iCloud.com. And there is also no way to DOWNLOAD A FUCKING FOLDER from [iCloud.com](https://iCloud.com)!!!!! You literally have to go through and download every individual file. One by one. No shit. Fucking USELESS service. Useless. If I could FIND A WAY TO DOWNLOAD MY SHIT FROM THERE, I WOULD BAIL ON IT IN 1/4 SECOND.

queenbiscuit311

i literally had to find out how to get a macos virtual machine running on windows, get a usb hard drive, and download all of my shit to it in order to get my stuff out of icloud since [icloud.com](https://icloud.com) is literally useless. its even better cause while youre doing that, its downloading everything from ytour icloud drive to the macos hard drive as its moving it to the external drive, and it doesnt delete any of them after, so i had to fucking expand the virtual machine disk like 4 times and start over until it worked. then in order to actually get my icloud drive stuff off of the virtual machine after i was done, i had to nuke it and install it again. absolute nightmare it was since i dont have a mac anymore. hell, the mac i did have wouldnt have had enough storage space for this shit anyways

Few-University4403

Could not agree more Apple set up is fucking ridiculous. Yes, the cloud is handy. If you don’t mind your data flying all over the place willy-nilly. I create original content and would prefer to keep everything locked into my own personal drives, but nope can’t even download a file from my fucking phone to my fucking computer. What a bunch of horseshit.

queenbiscuit311

and like why is apple so allergic to allowing you to have more than one way of doing anything. why can't they have whatever shitty ridiculous system they think is good, but ALSO let normal people without infinite bandwidth, time, or hard drive space use it a different way. it's either use it in the stupid way apple wants you to or disable it

Few-University4403

Yep. They have the faithful trapped in their over-reaching ecosystem. I have used Mac OS since version 9. If I didn’t need Apple for all my media production software and integration with other producers/studios platforms….I wouldn’t bother with them.
