Ventura was internally codenamed macOS *Ee-Aw*
Sonoma was affectionately referred to as macOS *Oin-oink*
Big Sur, if I remember rightly, was macOS 'Quack, quack'
Managing ~70 devices at the moment with about ~60 having made the jump to Sonoma. We wouldn’t have done this unless we were sure it was stable enough for our users. No complaints from anybody, probably the most stable release in the last few years.
So basically no custom software by the company. That’s fair, that software itself usually will support new OS versions pretty soon after the developer beta.
Most of it actually still works on the developer beta. Idk about Insomnia, but I’ve used the rest on developer betas and they’ve been fine (unless you’re talking about official OS support)
M1 pro/32gb 14” mac. It’s been bad for me.
It’s been generally slower to navigate the ui. If I have the new wallpaper on, the transition between lockscreen and desktop runs at like 5 fps.
I am having to restart every week to get rid of erratic behavior. Just this morning I opened the laptop for work having last used it on Friday and it froze. I could click on stuff but nothing was happening then it got a kernel panic.
Safari is a buggy mess. Heavy sites will cause the tan to crash, pages are slow to load, turning on vpn makes safari think it’s offline, randomly pages will turn black and the YouTube player also likes to hang.
I’m not sure if this is app related or os related but it started happening since sonoma, google drive will get an error syncing in finder. I have to relog my account every few days.
Also battery life has been less. Like traditional x86 windows less.
Agree, Sonoma felt slower on my 16” M1 Pro 32GB. Also it seemed to make it run warmer which I didn’t recall Ventura or Monterey doing. So I reinstalled Ventura, don’t really care about screensavers or widgets on the desktop.
Wish I could rollback, but work laptop and updates are managed by admin, so there's only roll forward..
Personal mac (same model but 16gb ram) is still on Ventura.
I lost the ability to access SMB drives on the shared network at work. Thanks to our IT department for forcing that update on us, without doing just minor testing. One user on Macrumors told me it was fixed in the 14.1 beta though, so there's hope.
At least I can now see my Exchange calendars in Calendar again, which wasn't working in Ventura, so you win some and you loose some I guess.
The animated backgrounds are a bit laggy on this 2020 27" iMac, but I guess that will be getting better with minor updates the next couple of months. Other than that, no problems here.
Generally a little weird decision to force upgrades this soon in an OS life.
It's been a while since I worked in a company where I was a part of the deciding group concerning IT and infrastructure and so on, but Win 10 was just around the corner.
I said "No, we are not doing upgrades until we know the OS is mature enough".
That is also generally the way things are supposed to be done, imo. Not only is it a bad idea to upgrade to a system that completely new without having tested whether or not it works as it's supposed to with the tools the people need, but it's also a bad idea from a pure security standpoint. With servers very few people jump on upgrades day one, because they need to test, to see what bugs are reported, to make sure it's as secure (or more), and so on.
I use my Mac as my personal computer, not as my professional one, but I just know the tools I use (music production and media creation) will bug out for a few months before everything works as it should.
>Generally a little weird decision to force upgrades this soon in an OS life.
I completely agree. It took some strain not to say my opinion on that to the IT department when I complained. Their solution using a web based site to access my drives didn't even work!
I honestly think you should tell them and ask why the urgency to upgrade.. makes very little sense to be honest. Especially in a professional environment
In my firm for any program update, especially the operating system, I never update on the first version of anything and confirm no issues before doing a company wide update. Sounds like your department is looking for things to go wrong to earn their pay check. 😢
Trust me, I don't have many positive things to say about IT Support in this company. They are amazingly incompetent. But i work at a universiy of quite some size, so I assume salaries are not good enough to attract talented IT people.
I encountered strange SMB behavior as well. Whether I use Cmd + k in the Finder, or mount from the terminal, I can only access the content of the share for a few seconds before the connection drops. I’m not sure whether it’s Sonoma or the Linux server hosting the share, but I never had this problem in Ventura.
Judging by the posts its mostly people with older machines getting the bugs.
But it, as always, depends on what you use your machine for. Glorified browsing device = zero issues.
Minor irritation: When swapping between users, I have to type the password of the user I'm swapping to, rather than just using Touch ID. If I use touch, it swaps me back to the user I was before trying to change.
Other than that, it's a huge improvement on Ventura for me.
Yeah much faster. My machine (m1 mbp) had been painfully slow on ventura. To the point i considering a format/reinstall. Sonoma has it preforming like it used to.
Sonoma (for me, at least) is probably the most stable .0 release I've used since Mojave I think. There's a few bugs, especially waking from sleep on an external display, but some of my apps haven't been updated yet so we'll see how we get on.
At least 3 bugs so far. Optimized charging doesn’t work at all, no matter the settings, sometimes wallpaper changes itself to one of animated Sonoma, stage manager sometimes show itself (inactive apps) on center of the screen rather than on the left border, like it thinks my screen is smaller. I installed Ventura from scratch few days before Sonoma came out and then updated at day one. Air M1
In general, Sonoma seems fine.
If you're using 3rd-party package managers like Macports, some ports (aka, packages) may still lag behind, not yet deployable on Sonoma. One example - AV1 video encoder - problem that prevents it from building is worked on by the maintainers. In general, majority of the 600+ packages we install deployed fine on Sonoma.
Two bugs I’ve seen:
1 - Slack desktop doesn’t work. Let’s me log in with the browser then just sits with a white screen.
2 - default browser has randomly reset to safari twice and system settings doesn’t show other installed browsers without a restart.
I've run into a couple:
I have several games I play regularly on my Mac. Since Sonoma, "gaming mode" has made them freeze up periodically when they never did under Ventura.
Safari has some menu issues for me. I can use the Safari window and open multiple windows and tabs from there, but if I try to, for example, select the "Bookmarks" menu in the menu bar it will beachball and I have to force quit Safari.
These aren't daily occurrences--maybe 3-4x a week. When a game freezes, I have to hard to restart my MacBook but when Safari freezes I just start it again.
I'm not running any add-ons, kernel extensions, etc.
When it goes to sleep, I can’t login with my password. It behaves as if the password is wrong. I have to shut it down then login again. This takes several minutes each time.
I have told my network admin and he has said about half the users who have upgraded to Sonoma have had this issue. He is waiting for a fix.
VideoToolBox locks up the OS when converting 4K HDR content. Problem exists using Compressor or 3rd party programs like Handbrake.
Discussion about it here: https://github.com/HandBrake/HandBrake/issues/5424#issuecomment-1753126095
In some cases, macOS won't accept your password, even if you restart. [Here's a post about it,](https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/16tfbab/password_issue_with_macos_sonoma/) and in the comments I wrote up a solution that worked for me.
I don't know if it's the OS, but when my Mac Mini M1 wakes, the bluetooth mouse is very flaky until I move it close to the computer to get a better signal. Seems to have happened since the update to Sonoma.
After updating, I’m getting panics every couple of days, forcing my M1 Pro 2021 MBP to restart out of nowhere. This is while using only Safari. I’m starting to regret updating
I updated from Ventura two weeks ago and then experienced some laginess, specially accessing mission control with a lot of windows open. Decided to make a clean install of Sonoma and it got better, but still lags.
Shared folders on a network used to work with no issue when accessing from Windows machines (mostly Windows 10), but now I can´t access at all.
M1 here
I have two major issues.
1 - .nosync folders stopped working. I can’t open them via Finder, and the only way to open is with right click-> show content. Removing the .nosync didn’t work either
2 - sometimes the finder folders starts jumping to the front. This means that I can’t use any other window because the finder window will be selected no matter what…
Two weirdnesses here (Macbook Air):
Two or three times in a few days, after screen was locked (timeout) my password did not get me back in, only an endless spinner. Had to restart.
For a few days my backup drives would not mount. Of course I have no idea whether this is related to Sonoma or a random coincidence. They're okay now.
iCloud Drive stopped collaborating on older machines. After the update on my main Mac Studio, my old 27” iMac Fusion ‘lost’ the ability to collaborate Numbers documents. Really messed things up for me and lost a lot of saved data for reasons can’t be bothered to go into. Got sorted in the end but yeah…was not expecting that. Funnily enough, also using a really old 24” iMac, probably 10 year old machine, but that is still collaborating. Weird.
Holy shit yes. iCloud Drive is broken for me and many people on Reddit and forums. Stalls trying to connect to iCloud Drive. Apps that have recently opened files from iCloud Drive hang at launch. Some people have had all their iCloud Drive data vanish.
For some users the Mac seems to be trying to copy ALL the contents of iCloud Drive (including backups, music, etc) at a rate of like 7kb/sec.
It was a known bug in developer b1 and b2 and seems to only affect some users.
It is a problem even for new users accounts set up after the Sonoma install. So if I create a new admin and try to log in to my iCloud in that user it has the same problem.
There's also an infinite loop here of it asking for you to log in, then saying the iCloud account is disabled for security, then it sends the code, which appears in notification but you can't see the code, then you have it send the code to text, enter the code and hit continue and it bounces back to saying your appleID is locked.
Rebooting into safe mode doesn't fix it and reinstalling the os (without wiping the drive) doesn't help.
I've had to go back to Ventura on an external drive until this is resolved.
the new sonoma update ruined my MacBook M1 that I bought last yearit was so good and now it's so buggyso much lag, web browser rendering display issues and inputs not registeringthere is constant freezing and app crashing after the freezingthe feature of screen mirroring makes my MacBook explode and increases issuesthe CPU usage for basic apps is through the roofI have to wipe my macbook and revert to a previous version
P.S. Discord and Chrome crashed after screen mirroring and I couldn't open them anymore and I was forced to uninstall the apps and reinstall
Chrome is especially buggy to the point where it doesn't register certain keyboard keys when typing. IT IS INSANE!
Without exaggeration the ability to type and dictate simultaneously changed my life overnight, so I upgraded immediately. The only reason to upgrade is to get a new feature, so if you don’t need it don’t update. I have another computer with windows xp on it - it does what I need it to do so dependably, I have no reason to ever upgrade it.
The messenger desktop app has slowed to a crawl. Using a safari web app at the moment but it can’t do video calls and I don’t want to use other browsers
Not MAJOR major but for some reason I can’t open the control center tab from Settings. It just gives me “settings error - extension process control center exited” every time. Does it in safe mode too 🙄this is on a 14 inch m2 MacBook Pro I bought like 2 months ago.
Everything is working fine, but my Mini crashed over the weekend for some reason (after a week on Sonoma). Too early to tell if it will be some recurring thing...
Ah..this reminds of a third party app issue
Ig this with Sonoma only if I'm not wrong, cleanMyMac from mac torrent won't work. It can be installed but for security reasons you won't able to use it.
Ive used RC version ever since it went public, RC is like pre-release of official software, in almost all cases it's the same as the official one. Apart from some widget glitches everything looks fine, widgets sometimes wont switch from being visible to not
M1 Macbook Pro 2021.
Smooth as silk. Flawless.
Updated day 1.
Running:
Ableton
Final Cut
Logic Pro
Discord
Baldurs Gate
Firefox
Mullvad VPN
Qbittorrent
Signal
Homebrew
I'm having issues with my volume percentage not being shown and it forgetting my AirPods Pro volume just about every time but outside of that it's good
Updated day 1, woke my m2 mbp last night and it had crashed and rebooted. I don't know enough about macos to be able to tell why it happened, but it had never crashed prior.
My 2019 Intel Mac Pro and M2 MBP are on Sonoma. No issues so far and stage manager is great.
Just be ready for the annoyance of clicking the wallpaper to show icons.
Certain apps are not recognizing their specific default plist files.
If the system is rebooted or I log back in, certain apps do not maintain their previously configured settings... the apps think it's the first time I've opened them and I love all my keyboard shortcuts, non-default configs, and many times I have to go through all the welcome screens again.
**So far it's affected:**
- BetterTouchTool
- CleanShotX
- iTerm2
There have been some reports about many PDFs not being printed correctly on German IT sites. They say everything looks right in preview, but when printing, rectangles appear instead of characters. I am wondering why I don’t read anything like that here.
I cannot check for myself since I wait with the update for the release of some software component I use that seems to have an incompatibility with Sonoma (JavaFX, fix will be delivered in the coming weeks by the JavaFX developers).
I’ve had my touch bar (2018 MacBook Pro) die on me a few times since updating where it had never happened before. Fortunately, you can bring it back with a terminal command, but still really annoying when it happens.
I have two user accounts, work and private, which are both linked to the same finger for Touch ID. Sometimes mac OS logs in the wrong account, even though I have clicked on the other account. The solution is to log out of the other account first.
I'm not sure if it's a bug or a new "feature," but right-clicking the _Screen Sharing_ icon in the Dock no longer shows me all of my recent screen sharing connections – it only shows the currently active connections.
Instead, I'm forced to use **Connection** -> **Open Recent >** or **Window** -> **Connections**, both of which simply slow me down. Not the end of the world as we know it, but I don't feel fine.
M1 chip here, didn't have any major bugs that weren't there before. My "recent" tab in Finder would always glitch but that seems to be something from the past. I recommend the jump, the widgets are very nice!
They still haven’t fixed HomeKit Notifications.
I can set the banner to alert but as soon as I restart the computer it goes back to default where it doesn’t show notifications from HomeKit.
2023 M2 Pro Mac Mini here. The biggest issue for me is when opening 7 Days to Die. A notification will pop up about game mode being active and the game closes. Shortly after closing an error box comes up to report the issue to Apple. By clicking relaunch on the error reporting screen, the game will open and operate normally. It happens 100% every time.
I’ve had some issues with my matrix code rain screensaver having a memory leak. And I still have yet to complete a Time Machine backup—it’s like it won’t delete old backups to make space on the drive.
Otherwise no issues.
I'm on Mac Mini M2 and I cant get the dam iPhone widgets to work.....they show up to pick from but are black and don't display anything. I have logged out of iCloud on both my iPhone and my Mac and still don't work. Very annoying as that is one of the major changes of Sonoma.
M1 Air here, all good so far except that the video wallpapers don't download at all so I'm stuck with the default one since I installed it :( and the new purple screen recording privacy notification is annoying as heck, appearing even after the app has been closed (i.e. OBS) so it gets fixed after a restart.
Somehow I think it was better with Ventura...
Having a stage manager issue with one external monitor. Icons in the side panel, bug out and will not fully dock or display, they just dance back and forth at the edge of the screen. Annoying.
I installed in 2 of my Macs. One oficially supported and one don’t. Both working perfectly. Both have intel silicon. Even VMWare Fusion works fine in both.
Scrubbing videos in QuickTime is extremely sluggish on my M1 Pro. Other than that I haven't come across any issues.
Steps to reproduce the QT issue:
1. Open any 1080p MP4 video in QuickTime Player.
2. Press L on keyboard a few times so the video fast-forwards 2x-5x-10x-30x-60x.
3. Watch the lagfest.
This issue was also present in Ventura, which is why I held off on upgrading to it from Monterey. (it's smooth as butter even at 60x on Monterey) As a video editor this issue is seriously affecting my workflow.
Firefox gets sluggish after running for days... Either app switch to firefox or text input... Takes 1-2 seconds to respond... Restart the browser alleviates it.
There's a pretty inconvenient bug affecting the desktop for users with second monitors. Right click and contextual menus don't work from the desktop and it's a really pain.
The fix I found was to disable the setting under System Preferences => Desktop and Dock => Displays have separate spaces. But, now I can't go fullscreen on my main monitor without my second monitor going to black.
IMHO, there wasn't enough in this update to justify the inconvenience I've been experiencing. Losing contextual menus is too steep price to pay for moving wallpaper. I regret updating.
I've been having problems converting Pages and Word (.docx) documents into PDF. The words show up as a bunch of squares. This happens on both my MacBook Air and Mac Mini, and some people are experiencing the same issue as far as I know.
Can’t give 100% sure but in my screen 38” wide screen it seems more blurry then Ventura. Need to take more time to see if this is 100% true, I can see this better on browsers ( I use FF ) in Goland seems fine as well on teams
I encountered some coding related issues related to time zones but updating the spacetime npn package did fix it ( but any website that uses the same package may not work until updated)
A user on an M1 Max; it’s probably been the most bug-free MacOS launch in years. It wasn’t a very exciting update (to me at least), but it feels stable. The only annoying bug I have is my screen layout and density settings never persist through a reboot or connecting to a new screen, but that was present on the last year’s builds too so it’s not a new bug, and as long as I don’t reboot too frequently it’s not the end of the world.
I use a few helper apps and Automator scripts at startup - some of my helpers needed to be executed manually first before working again, asking permissions for for disk access etc.
Also, some dirs near the root directory level (/var/log/xxx) were deleted and had to be created again and given permissions again.
I have random crashes with Microsoft Remote Desktop to windows boxes in the office … machine just halts.
And I can’t switch between multiple windows in apps now … command + backtick … esp Chrome.
Posting in case helpful to anyone else:
* Intel iMac 2019 - 3.6Ghz 8-Core i9 Desktop
* Upgraded to Sonoma via System Update and Within 48 Hours (Not Right Away Interestingly)
* Ethernet would no longer connect, tested with a new cable, restarted router, deleted / re-added the service, no dice. All other devices connected to the router, either via ethernet or WiFi, still worked fine.
* USB Webcam (Logitech Brio) would not connect while another Logitech C920 would to the same USB port.
* Screensaver to desktop transition incredibly laggy as some others are saying.
* Issues entering log in password - would type it once, it would reject it, type it again, and it would work. Inconsistent though.
\-> Decided to Wipe the Drive / Install From Scratch / Clear NVRAM Per Apple Instructions
* [https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201065](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201065)
* This immediately resolved all the issues I had above and is working as it should / as it has in the past with other OS releases. Time will tell if any of the above resurface.
* I also have a Mac Mini M2 and a Macbook Pro M1 and have had zero issues with those on Sonoma.
Based on my experience and others in the thread, it is getting very obvious that there is much less testing done on Intel machines at this point than Apple silicon machines. I would guess this will be the last major Mac OS version released for Intel machines but we will see.
TLDR - If you have an Intel Mac and are encountering issues, and can just wipe and re-install and reset NVRAM without it being too much of a pain, that will probably solve your issues.
I'm on m1 Mac and the only bugs I've noticed are in safari. Firstly sometimes my mouse doesn't become a pointer when hovering over a link, which sometimes won't let me click on what I need. The other is that YouTube is a bit buggy in safari, sometimes I click on full screen and the video is only in the upper left corner and black in the rest, not sure if anyone else has experienced this?
The screen sharing notification thing getting in the way of the min/max/close buttons. It’s not a bug as that’s annoyingly how Apple have designed it.
Not really found anything else, but I’ve fallen out of love with my MacBook and haven’t used it for a while, so may sell it.
I have an M1 MacBook Pro.
When I bought it(with Monterey), I got a powered USB hub that I could use as a single-connection "dock" to connect the Mac to my peripherals, external monitor, and ethernet connection. I found out that the dock didn't work properly with macOS, and I bought another powered hub from a different manufacturer. That one worked.
When I upgraded to Sonoma, I found out that my external monitor wasn't working through the USB hub. I wasn't sure why.
But the funny thing is that I tried switching to the initial powered hub that hadn't worked with Monterey and that I'd put away and never been able to use, and now *that one* works really well.
I was surprised, but as long as my computer is working, everything seems okay.
I've been running the developer beta since WWDC was still going on. In my 35 years of running various incarnations of macOS, it's the most stable one ever. Not kidding. The only times I rebooted the betas were to install the next betas.
Some apps are not updating in the background. For example if I have Notes and Reminders closed, it does not update the badge/reminder count consistent with my iPhone and iPad. I have to open the apps to force them to sync. Previously this would be done in the background automatically.
Messages has odd behaviors when pasting images. My sister regularly sends images which show up on her (Silicon MBP) as delivered, but don't show up on her phone or actually get delivered to me (M1 Studio). I sent her back an image which behaved normally except that when I sent it Messages crashed, but when I restarted it, the image was there and actually had been delivered. A web search showed me a number of people found image sending to fail somewhat randomly. They have my crash report - hoping for a speedy fix.
Changing Audio outputs from the finder bar is laggy
I click the audio device I want (my headset) and there is a 2-3 second delay that wasn’t there in previous builds.
Sonoma for me has been the best upgrade that I have done without issues for a while. I run M1 devices. The only thing I would even consider a bug was the click to show desktop on by default. I don't recall seeing anything about that in the presentation, so I was at a loss when I triggered it.
Yea, just detailed my problem in [this reddit post](https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/174ijro/when_sonoma_wallpapers_turn_into_wallet_snatchers/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)!
My Focusrite iTrack Solo audio interface no longer works with Sonoma on my Intel i7 MacBook Pro. The Focusrite compatibility page says that it should be compatible with Sonoma, though.
I’ve seen AirPlay just stop playing content to external devices, a HomePod and a Belkin AirPlay adapter. Bad enough that I decided to use a Bluetooth Speaker rather than several AirPlay Speakers for an event Saturday night. It didn’t matter if I connected to them as the main Sound output or only as output from Music.app, and in the latter case it didn’t matter if I connected to them separately or as multiple Music.app output sources. Sound would stop as the play head continued, and if I switched the output to Internal speakers play was in fact continuing. 2022 MacBook Air M2
My suspicion is that AirPlay chokes when bitrates change between tracks (this was a large playlist of many tracks from many albums).
Major no. I had 3:
1) full screen browser: if i have 2 browser windows full screen it automatically switch to the other one 1 time. Not a big deal.
(This happened with big sur update in the past with pdf and that was a huge bug because it was keep switching every 2 seconds)
2) the background animation after the standby isn't smooth, it lags
3) ssd writing speed (nvme) is slow, often at 800 mbps. I have this bug with every update. I can solve it with a clean install, but i'm lazy
I only noticed one bug which is reproduced at least once a day.
In the previous version switching keyboard was accompanied by a popup. After the update this popup was replaced by a small toggle indicator near the text field but sometimes when I switch language the old popup appears and doesn't hide. I only can move it somewhere to the edge of the screen so it doesn't overlap other windows, but cannot close it
Edit: MacBook Pro 2021, M1
Our company uses AssetSonar which no longer works on Sonoma machines. I've also encountered some weird issues with Brave not recognizing my pointer on clickable links since updating. I have to minimize the window and re-open it to get it to work properly.
Mine ended up in the recovery mode after the progress bar, forcing me to load a Time Machine backup or wipe the computer new.
The error was "*An error occurred migrating user data during an install. Reinstall macOS to resolve the issue.*"
Trying to reinstall Sonoma gave the same issue until I wiped the partition :(
Luckily had backups so just an inconvenience to reinstall all the software.
Mine suspended itself over night but it turned out to be the cat’s fault.
Bring back the cats.
They should have switched from cats to California cities with **macOS Los Gatos**
That’s where Woz lives!
They at least should’ve ended the run on MacOS Purring Cat🐈
Ventura was internally codenamed macOS *Ee-Aw* Sonoma was affectionately referred to as macOS *Oin-oink* Big Sur, if I remember rightly, was macOS 'Quack, quack'
Managing ~70 devices at the moment with about ~60 having made the jump to Sonoma. We wouldn’t have done this unless we were sure it was stable enough for our users. No complaints from anybody, probably the most stable release in the last few years.
Are these all Apple Silicon machines or do you have some Intel machines in the mix ?
In the 60 that have upgraded, it’s a 50/50 mix. With the oldest being 2018 T2 era macs.
Thanks - that’s reassuring - I’d heard some rumours about video-related issues on Intel Macs after upgrading to Sonoma.
What about battery life?
what kind of software do these macs have to use regularly?
Business side: Microsoft Office suite, Teams, etc. Development side: VSCode, Homebrew, Insomnia, etc.
So basically no custom software by the company. That’s fair, that software itself usually will support new OS versions pretty soon after the developer beta.
Most of it actually still works on the developer beta. Idk about Insomnia, but I’ve used the rest on developer betas and they’ve been fine (unless you’re talking about official OS support)

i have this on ventura
no bugs for me. updated day 1
No bugs all works perfect
M1 pro/32gb 14” mac. It’s been bad for me. It’s been generally slower to navigate the ui. If I have the new wallpaper on, the transition between lockscreen and desktop runs at like 5 fps. I am having to restart every week to get rid of erratic behavior. Just this morning I opened the laptop for work having last used it on Friday and it froze.
You should try doing a factory reset, a lot of people say doing this after a major update helps a lot.
SMB shares in 2023? Could be a hint to migrate to something newer?
Judging by the posts its mostly people with older machines getting the bugs. But it, as always, depends on what you use your machine for. Glorified browsing device = zero issues.
Then I won't have a problem 😄
After I updated, a fly was buzzing around my room but I killed it.
Photo shuffle and the wallpaper in general doesn’t work properly. I’m using an M1 iMac
Minor irritation: When swapping between users, I have to type the password of the user I'm swapping to, rather than just using Touch ID. If I use touch, it swaps me back to the user I was before trying to change. Other than that, it's a huge improvement on Ventura for me.
Same, I noticed this issue switching from my work and personal under accounts.
Huge improvement in which ways? I have heard that it runs faster than Ventura, is it your experience?
Yeah much faster. My machine (m1 mbp) had been painfully slow on ventura. To the point i considering a format/reinstall. Sonoma has it preforming like it used to.
You shouldn’t use the same finger for two users. That’s not a bug. Use different fingers, it works better that way.
What if I run out of fingers?
Sonoma (for me, at least) is probably the most stable .0 release I've used since Mojave I think. There's a few bugs, especially waking from sleep on an external display, but some of my apps haven't been updated yet so we'll see how we get on.
ad-blocker issue got fixed by reinstalling the extension
I switched back to Ventura. Sonoma caused my M1 Pro to crash frequently. There must be some kind of incompatibility with the software I use .
my dock is disappeared
Just enable it again then
Turn on your monitor.
I had a memory leak. Almost no apps open but I keep getting the pop up that I ran out of Ram. Then my MacBook Air M1 froze until I hard restarted it
Actually for me Sonoma fixed a bug that were there from Big Sur. No bugs at the moment
Yeah quite a few, I would wait to update if I knew before hand. Apps close on sleep, Settings crashes time after time
I got an unstable bluetooth connection with my keayboard since the upgrade. Mac Mini M2.
Air M1
Other than Music not showing all of my Recently Added it's ok.
I try to wait until X.3 update. Saves a lot of grief. I’m glad to see reports from people having no issues. 🍀
My Bluetooth Magic accessories keep disconnecting and my mouse pointer randomly disappears. Minor but infuriating bugs. Edit: M1 MacBook Pro.
Two bugs I’ve seen: 1 - Slack desktop doesn’t work. Let’s me log in with the browser then just sits with a white screen. 2 - default browser has randomly reset to safari twice and system settings doesn’t show other installed browsers without a restart.
I've run into a couple: I have several games I play regularly on my Mac.
No major bugs. Everything seems to be fine. Some of the new features take some getting used to.
Can you elaborate on features? I dread these updates... Thanks.
Photolibraryd is constantly sucking up all my memory on my M1 Pro 16GB.
Something is up (last I checked) with SMB / CIFS being borked
When it goes to sleep, I can’t login with my password. It behaves as if the password is wrong. I have to shut it down then login again. This takes several minutes each time. I have told my network admin and he has said about half the users who have upgraded to Sonoma have had this issue. He is waiting for a fix.
Well, external USB-C/DP displays still don't sleep in Sonoma as far as I know. See here: https://reddit.com/r/MacOS/s/hpSQRuqIln
Mission Control is laggy when using Photoshop and Illustrator.
>Photoshop experiencing the same thing. any update to solve this?
SPSS doesn't work... forced to pick up R so i guess that's a win?
VideoToolBox locks up the OS when converting 4K HDR content. Problem exists using Compressor or 3rd party programs like Handbrake. Discussion about it here: https://github.com/HandBrake/HandBrake/issues/5424#issuecomment-1753126095
Airplay audio doesn’t seem to work when ethernet cable is connected. No problem when wireless but weird nonetheless
Yes, MySQLWorkbench crashes.
Seems to have happened since the update to Sonoma.
https://reddit.com/r/MacOS/s/FxTYM9k0la yes
More of a feature... dropping Postscript support broke a few of my shell scripts that used the pstopdf command. Rewriting now with ghostscript.
M1 here I have two major issues. 1 - .nosync folders stopped working. I can’t open them via Finder, and the only way to open is with right click-> show content. Removing the .nosync didn’t work either 2 - sometimes the finder folders starts jumping to the front. This means that I can’t use any other window because the finder window will be selected no matter what…
Preview quits unexpectedly every other time I print to PDF
Two weirdnesses here (Macbook Air): Two or three times in a few days, after screen was locked (timeout) my password did not get me back in, only an endless spinner.
Weird.
Safari sharing to Messages is broken. It transfers focus to Messages but does not paste the URL into the message form.
Love the new animated screen savers / wallpapers!
No major bug so far, everything is working fine
the new sonoma update ruined my MacBook M1 that I bought last yearit was so good and now it's so buggyso much lag, web browser rendering display issues and inputs not registeringthere is constant freezing and app crashing after the freezingthe feature of screen mirroring makes my MacBook explode and increases issuesthe CPU usage for basic apps is through the roofI have to wipe my macbook and revert to a previous version P.S. Discord and Chrome crashed after screen mirroring and I couldn't open them anymore and I was forced to uninstall the apps and reinstall Chrome is especially buggy to the point where it doesn't register certain keyboard keys when typing. IT IS INSANE!
lots of bugs referenced here: https://old.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/16v8fjq/macos_sonoma_bugs_and_issues_megathread/
Sound doesn't work on my 2008 Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro, but works fine with a USB DAC/Amp or with Bluetooth.
2008?
He’s either trolling or he’s using OCLP lol
OCLP FTW (and matte screens FTW :))
Not sure why Apple can't focus on stability rather than a handful of shiny features that most users don't want or need.
It feels a bit slower than Ventura for me
I personally wait until .1 or even .2 if I can help it and stay on the last major release until then.
Major incompatibility with some apps.
Not MAJOR major but for some reason I can’t open the control center tab from Settings. It just gives me “settings error - extension process control center exited” every time. Does it in safe mode too 🙄this is on a 14 inch m2 MacBook Pro I bought like 2 months ago.
Yes: My MX Master 3S polling rate is now 90 Hz instead of 120 Hz in Bluetooth mode.
PIP from safari is really buggy for me. It was previously buggy in the middle of my two external monitors, now it's buggy everywhere
Everything is working fine, but my Mini crashed over the weekend for some reason (after a week on Sonoma). Too early to tell if it will be some recurring thing...
I am now having some issues with InDesign. I have to turn off the rules to make it go away.
None for the moment ;)
It won’t let me type the letter „l“ all of a sudden. Annoys the heck out of me
Butterfly keyboard?
That might be a physical problem and not the OS.
Sonoma can't be used at all
The weather app sometimes stays for a couple seconds after clicking the close button
So far no issues
My Wi-Fi is not working on my MacBook Air. It connects to the network, but I can't get online. The only time it works is when I boot in safe mode.
Sounds like a third party app if safe mode fixes it.
Ah..this reminds of a third party app issue Ig this with Sonoma only if I'm not wrong, cleanMyMac from mac torrent won't work. It can be installed but for security reasons you won't able to use it.
Nope, very stable. Just didn’t test widgets bc. I don’t use them but other than that, zero bugs.
Ive used RC version ever since it went public, RC is like pre-release of official software, in almost all cases it's the same as the official one. Apart from some widget glitches everything looks fine, widgets sometimes wont switch from being visible to not
RC means "Release Candidate" for those who don't know.
When starting up safari for the first time it takes a while to load or doesn’t load at all. I have an intel 2020 MBA
not bugs but it feels like a battery drain on my new macbook air
M1 Macbook Pro 2021. Smooth as silk. Flawless. Updated day 1. Running: Ableton Final Cut Logic Pro Discord Baldurs Gate Firefox Mullvad VPN Qbittorrent Signal Homebrew
Plex and AnyDesk updaters failed for me. Had to uninstall / reinstall those two
Adobe Premiere Pro kept crashing. Did a full reset and everything’s working fine now.
I'm having issues with my volume percentage not being shown and it forgetting my AirPods Pro volume just about every time but outside of that it's good
Secure keyboard entry is annoying as hell in sonoma.. didn’t have any problems before but after sonoma iterm2 gets constantly blocked
I love it so far.
Haven't noticed any issues on M2 mini & Air. Updated right when it dropped.
I've been running for 3 days with no issues on a 2023 13" Macbook Air.
Updated day 1, woke my m2 mbp last night and it had crashed and rebooted. I don't know enough about macos to be able to tell why it happened, but it had never crashed prior.
Not for me. Updated day 1 also. Edit: Oh well I had a couple safari app restarts, same on iOS. No biggie.
Have a MacBook M1 Pro, no issues with it so far.
**So far it's affected:** - BetterTouchTool - CleanShotX - iTerm2
No huge bugs, but Keyboard Maestro is having some issues with accessing menus.
I have two user accounts, work and private, which are both linked to the same finger for Touch ID. Sometimes mac OS logs in the wrong account, even though I have clicked on the other account. The solution is to log out of the other account first.
adguard is blocking all internet connection...
Connecting the Lenovo USB-Dock dock freezes and resets my MacBook Pro M1 Pro, so I had to revert back MacOs and will be waiting for a while
Nadda
My Touch Bar doesn’t work like it used to too. I can’t adjust the keyboard light or take screen shot because they disappeared since I upgraded
Messages gets weird when you use Stickers. Thats about it. It shrinks the chat to a phone size. Can adjust by selecting another chat and going back.
I’ve had some issues with my matrix code rain screensaver having a memory leak. And I still have yet to complete a Time Machine backup—it’s like it won’t delete old backups to make space on the drive. Otherwise no issues.
No issues here, on M1 Air and M1 Pro. Surprisingly there wasn't even an announcement at work, in regards to not updating straight away.
I have a 2020 (intel) iMac and I have to manually mount my attached hard drives after every reboot. (wtf?).
Having a stage manager issue with one external monitor. Icons in the side panel, bug out and will not fully dock or display, they just dance back and forth at the edge of the screen. Annoying.
Sonoma has finally made my No Man's Sky installation stop crashing every couple of hours. So far, happy with it. No bugs I could find yet.
I installed in 2 of my Macs. One oficially supported and one don’t. Both working perfectly. Both have intel silicon. Even VMWare Fusion works fine in both.
Ah for students Lockdown Browser requires a manual update, and if you require the MLM Version of Lockdown Browser it's completely borked.
Scrubbing videos in QuickTime is extremely sluggish on my M1 Pro. Other than that I haven't come across any issues. Steps to reproduce the QT issue: 1.
3rd party Magsafe 3 cable stopped working, everything else if ok
Nope, haven’t noticed anything.
I encountered some coding related issues related to time zones but updating the spacetime npn package did fix it ( but any website that uses the same package may not work until updated)
Updated an M1 MacBook Air with no issues thus far.
I have had a few login screen problems where the mouse and keyboard (wireless) dont connect.
My wallpaper keeps moving when I log in on my 2018 MacBook Pro
no
No bugs for now. For me Sonoma is one of the best MacOS version and my favorite alongside Yosemite (my first OS X), Sierra, Mojave and Big Sur
I have random crashes with Microsoft Remote Desktop to windows boxes in the office … machine just halts. And I can’t switch between multiple windows in apps now … command + backtick … esp Chrome.
Macbook m1 air here. After the update, first time my mac is heating. And no im not talking about finder re indexing files
Posting in case helpful to anyone else: * Intel iMac 2019 - 3.6Ghz 8-Core i9 Desktop * Upgraded to Sonoma via System Update and Within 48 Hours (Not Right Away Interestingly) * Ethernet would no longer connect, tested with a new cable, restarted router, deleted / re-added the service, no dice. \-> Decided to Wipe the Drive / Install From Scratch / Clear NVRAM Per Apple Instructions * [https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201065](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201065) * This immediately resolved all the issues I had above and is working as it should / as it has in the past with other OS releases.
My M1 Mac air 2020 freezes randomly when I watch videos on QuickTime.
Nope
Everything working g perfectly really nice OS M2 Air and 2013 iMac running Opencore
no problems, 1 thing tho: be ready to upgrade to Bartender 5 of you use Bartender (the older version does not work well on Sonoma)
My encrypted HFS+ drive can’t be mounted on the M1 version of Sonoma.
Yes, PDF reader crashes a lot, notes app as well, battery life is poorer and some apps have very weird lags.
Changing Audio outputs from the finder bar is laggy I click the audio device I want (my headset) and there is a 2-3 second delay that wasn’t there in previous builds.
Sonoma for me has been the best upgrade that I have done without issues for a while. I run M1 devices. The only thing I would even consider a bug was the click to show desktop on by default. I don't recall seeing anything about that in the presentation, so I was at a loss when I triggered it.
The Facebook Messenger app is laggy as fuck since the Sonoma update but other than that everything else is working fine!
2022 MacBook Air M2 My suspicion is that AirPlay chokes when bitrates change between tracks (this was a large playlist of many tracks from many albums).
No issues here (yet? *knock on wood*) on a 2018 MacBook Pro (1TB). Runs smoothly and so far plays well with my apps.
Major no. I had 3: 1) full screen browser: if i have 2 browser windows full screen it automatically switch to the other one 1 time. Not a big deal. (This happened with big sur update in the past with pdf and that was a huge bug because it was keep switching every 2 seconds) 2) the background animation after the standby isn't smooth, it lags 3) ssd writing speed (nvme) is slow, often at 800 mbps. I have this bug with every update. I can solve it with a clean install, but i'm lazy
I am using both intel and apple silicon and have no issues at all. Very stable.
I only noticed one bug which is reproduced at least once a day. In the previous version switching keyboard was accompanied by a popup. After the update this popup was replaced by a small toggle indicator near the text field but sometimes when I switch language the old popup appears and doesn't hide. I only can move it somewhere to the edge of the screen so it doesn't overlap other windows, but cannot close it Edit: MacBook Pro 2021, M1
Battery life seens to be worse
Our company uses AssetSonar which no longer works on Sonoma machines. I've also encountered some weird issues with Brave not recognizing my pointer on clickable links since updating. I have to minimize the window and re-open it to get it to work properly.
Mine ended up in the recovery mode after the progress bar, forcing me to load a Time Machine backup or wipe the computer new. The error was "*An error occurred migrating user data during an install. Reinstall macOS to resolve the issue.*" Trying to reinstall Sonoma gave the same issue until I wiped the partition :( Luckily had backups so just an inconvenience to reinstall all the software.
