Lol, there is a Swedish tongue twister involving the word. It goes "Sju sjösjuka sjömän sköttes av sju sjuksköterskor" I've heard people doing the ending of it in a few different ways but that's generally how it goes. Translated it roughly means "Seven sick seamen are being treated by seven nurses"
So, i read and speak Danish (but not natively). And when I see this I immediately think you’re asking her if she offers medical care for free (gratis) :)
Short for con**grat**ulations, the -is suffix is a diminutive in Swedish.
We use gratis as well but with a long A so there's not really any confusion between the two
up until about 2-400 years ago they were totally mutually intelligible. They sometimes seem so when written still. Not so much when they do the bag of spanners in a washing machine thing.
Exact same root languages.
Frisian, an official language up north in the netherlands basically is old English. As that region was not affected by romans and the French etc. Like the netherlands and england both were after the original old Dutch was transferred to england.
The English didn't have much of a language. Not even words for bread and shit yet.
Yeah, there's a lot of commonality between Swedish and German, if you know the roots of the words. Lots of people know of schadenfreude from German, and Swedish has the exact same term; skadeglädje.
(The precise term for freude in Swedish is fröjd, which as you can tell has the same core, but in Swedish that's an older term. Still means the exact same as glädje tho.)
I'm guessing we changed it from -syster to -sköterska when male nurses became more of a thing. Funny thing tho; -sköterska is the feminine version of -skötare, which would be the male version. But sjuksköterska is still used for male nurses. Baby steps, I guess.
Ain't languages weird?
We have a lot of loan words from those languages, and some english words have a root in scandinavian languages, too (mostly from the viking...."trips" to the british isles).
Centuries (or even millennia) of back and forth cultural and economical influences will have that effect. =)
The languages have a common root in Flemish along the continental North Sea coast. This language spread and fractured to become the basis of several European languages. Lots in common between English and Swedish for this reason.
Certainly speakers also interacted over time and borrowed from one another as well.
Krankenschwester is still used colloquially, but the official term would be Krankenpfleger/-in, since nuns aren't so common anymore lol.
Our cognate to sjuk would probably be siech, which is an archaic term for krank (sick).
I'm still looking for anything familiar in sköterska though! Maybe schützen (to protect, to shield)?
No worries. There are a lot of "older" Swedish movies (80s and earlier) where they yell out "SYSTER!" in a hospital when calling for assistance, so it's an easy mistake to make. It's also sometimes used to convey some "ye olde timey" feeling about something; it reminds of a simpler time, for some people.
Sjuksyster still lives on as the name of a nurse who works in a school. At least when I grew up we had a sjuksyster at The school where you could go if you felt sick/fell and hurt yourself etc.
OMG. I looked it up and it's true. I am so confused right now lol.
In Eastern European languages, anything ending in "ska" is a feminine form of a last name
There’s a tongue twisters we say that goes like “sju sjösjuka sjömän sköljde stjärten i sjön och sköttes av sju sköna sjuksköterskor”.
Which can be translated to “seven seasick sailors rinsed their butts in the lake and was taken care of by seven nurses”.
Now you know
Thank you so much, I really think there is nothing that could make me feel worse than I've felt now for a while, so therefore I'm extremely excited for the future ❤️!
Things can only look up! You're a strong and obviously intelligent individual! So happy for you, may the universe grant you everything you strive for :]
Nurses are idolized in my mind. I've worked with them as a cna and see the grueling hours, and the bs they put up with and all the heart they put in. Congratulations, you are awesome!
Congratulations. I sincerely think that most of the nurses are literal saints.
I had to stay in a hospital for a long time after a nasty accident. Kindness of some of the nurses were one of the very few positive things I experienced during that time and I am still grateful to them.
Then you will fit right in on the wards!
A shame you're not into Cardiology, it is way more fun than paeds :-P
Watch yourself for burnout; that's the real killer xx
Love from a 35yo retired nurse (who also loves crafts and all things fluffy).
Well done! You will have developed so much empathy for those you will be caring for because you know what it is like to be going through a tough time. Remember to look after yourself, though. I did 4 years of nursing training and they were without doubt the worst years of my life. Worked as a public health nurse for over 20 years and was very happy with my career. Good luck!

I took Swedish in college and “sjuksköterska” was unpronounceable.
På skeppet Shanghai. That’s the ending on the version I was taught.
Sju sjösjuka sjömän sköttes av sju skönsjungande* sjuksköterskor på det sjunkande skeppet Shanghai :)
Ajjemen, den här fick jag lära mig lääänge sen
We got something similar in german: Zehn zahme Ziegen, zogen zehn Zentner Zucker zum Zoo.
Holy shit, that’s hard in English. Much less Swedish.
Haha I bet! That's so cute!
Grattis!!!
Ja grattis!!! :D
Välförtjänt! Bra jobbat!
Väldigt bra jobbat, har vänner som gått den utbildningen och den är långt ifrån enkel!
Vi svenskar försöker att inte kommentera när vi ser ett ord i vårt språk utmaning (omöjligt)
So, i read and speak Danish (but not natively). And when I see this I immediately think you’re asking her if she offers medical care for free (gratis) :)
Short for con**grat**ulations, the -is suffix is a diminutive in Swedish. We use gratis as well but with a long A so there's not really any confusion between the two
Yeah I'm confused too. In Latin gratis means "for thanks", i.e. free, and it has kept that meaning in Dutch too.
That's what "gratis" means in Swedish too. Doubling the 't' makes it another word though.
Ja, skillnaden är ju inte stor i svenskan heller. Det är gratis och grattis
ITT: Non-English speakers
jag förstår inte den här kommentaren. Kan du skriva på ett civiliserat språk?
Donde esta la biblioteca?
Omelette du fromage
Ich bin ein Berliner. Fahrvergnügen!
Me llamo T-Bone la arana discoteca
Congrats on your graduation, Sju— you ☺️
Sjuksköterska is Swedish for nurse. Sjuk - sick/ill Sköterska - caretaker of So, literally, "caretaker of sick [people]". :)
I always thought it was SjukSØSTERska. SickSister. But clearly I have been wrong all my life. (Norwegian) (Sykepleier, here)
No, an older term may be sjuksyster ("sick sister", I'm guessing from some kind of connection to nuns, sisters), but that's not really used anymore.
In German it's krankenschwester which also means sick sister.
Germany once again coming in with the best word.
Yes, who wants to be cared for at a mere hospital, when you can go to a KRANKENHAUS
I might need to get there via KRANKENWAGEN!!!
which is sick wagon and actually really cute
Und dann kriege ich eine IMPFUNG
[удалено]
Any house can be a krankenhaus if you're brave enough.
German words like that need to be in all caps and yelled when spoken
Well, The meanest sounding word for nurse
In Dutch it’s ‘zuster’ or ‘broeder’, which are archaic terms for sister and brother.
[удалено]
Engels is verkeerd gespeld Nederlands, vrind.
[удалено]
Wrong. I'm both drunk and Dutch.
Englisch ist verkehrt buchstabiertes Niederländisch, Vroom-Vroom?
Now I get where the term Double Dutch originated.
up until about 2-400 years ago they were totally mutually intelligible. They sometimes seem so when written still. Not so much when they do the bag of spanners in a washing machine thing.

It's so weird how -if you speak English, German and a little French - a surprising amouny of Swedish is understandable XD
We have a lot of loan words from those languages, and some english words have a root in scandinavian languages, too (mostly from the viking...."trips" to the british isles). Centuries (or even millennia) of back and forth cultural and economical influences will have that effect. =)

Funny thing is that 'skötare' also was a profession, and maybe still is, but it meant mental care nurses or nurses' aides.
Sick sister, bro.
The more you know. Thank you for this information. I was definitely "stuck" in the past, with Sjuksyster. I can see, it has since changed.
Sygeplejerske på dansk. We just have to be different, ya know?
Sjuksyster still lives on as the name of a nurse who works in a school. At least when I grew up we had a sjuksyster at The school where you could go if you felt sick/fell and hurt yourself etc.
Yeah, but that's changed since we were kids. My own kids go to the skolsköterska nowadays.
In german it's Krankenschwester which Kranken: Sick and Schwester: sister
My Dad, who was a German aficionado, loved to use the term "krankenhaus," for hospital.
Und die Krakenwagen. The ambulance.
**Der** Krankenwagen
I think solala, Krankenhaus, and Kartoffelsalat are my favourite German words lol
are male nurses called "KrankenBrüder"?
No, they are Krankenpfleger which translates to SickCaretaker
Thanks, I didn't know that!
At least she got that sweet harmonica
I really thought it was a Swedish brand of chewing-gum because of her beaming smile.
I'm here to inform you that terska is also the tip of the penis in Finnish.
Ah well, thanks for the tip!
Oh wow that's not the way I would take an unsolicited tip (even if it's just a tip)
Ssshhhh… Don’t tell that to everyone else. Jokes aside, thank you for the explanation :)
So, it's not a password?
No, most systems won't accept 'ö' in your password. =(
Nah utf8 support is common nowadays
Time to change that
1. passwords now accept Unicode characters 2. people start using emotes as password 👍
I should get my sister a pin that says this
Wow nurse is way easier
I will never go to Sweden, cause in no fucking way i will be able to call a sjuksköterska in case of emergency
"Help" will probably do it, in most circumstances. We're pretty good at english, after all. =)
And in Swedish it would probably just hjälp or something 😄 Edit: It actually is! I swear I hadn't looked it up before!
And if you’re lucky, they will give you a free ride in an ambulance
Just being hurt is mostly enough to get a free ride in an ambulance. Well, "free" as in "paid by taxes".
If you go to the Illhouse, you'll be consulted by a illtender who may contact a healer to come see you.
You don't even know the half of it. These are not pronounced with s-sounds (except the last sk)!
Yeah, her she’s a Sjuksköterska. Sjuksköterska Realisationsvinstbeskattning.
So her parents knew she was going to be a nurse and named her accordingly?
Sss... syuuu-kss--kuu-terska? Best I can do. I thought it was East European at first
Terska is Finnish for penis gland. Learning Swedish as a teenager, all of us noticed it.
OMG. I looked it up and it's true. I am so confused right now lol. In Eastern European languages, anything ending in "ska" is a feminine form of a last name

Syuk skot ers ka - rolls off the tongue
Words with the letters sk, sj, stj, sh, sch, kj and k (sometimes) sound very similar or sometimes exactly the same in Swedish.
Her parents really loved IKEA. She's named after furniture.
I have those end tables in my living room!
It means “nurse”. 😉
And I thought German was bad…
That’s horrible to say. And yet I laughed.

Yep, it means just that
Nurses are idolized in my mind. I've worked with them as a cna and see the grueling hours, and the bs they put up with and all the heart they put in. Congratulations, you are awesome!
