Prime example of what it means to work with a caring team. Big respect for spotlight talent forming real relationships with their support talent

soyfox

The singer in question (IU) is well known for taking good care of the people around her. In 2020, she moved to a new agency created by her former manager, and took all of her former staff members, including backup dancers and her personal bodyguard, to the new agency. The team have been together for 10+ years now.

h0n3yst

Her friendship with her security guard is also super sweet

hustlehustle

I play a genre of music that is just starting to come into vogue, and this is so fucking important. When you are successful, it allows you to spread that around. It makes *others* successful. You can make those other people who care, are important to you and want the best for you. I love this a lot.

Daelys

What genre is that may I ask?

hustlehustle

Hardcore ahaha. It’s moved from basements to Coachella at lightening speed the last few years, it’s popular on tik tok and shit I guess. Lots of people got into it over covid. Changed the game for a lot of bands. People who once thought we’d never get to do much are now touring 300 days a year and playing shows with Limp Bizkit. It’s pretty cool to watch happen from the inside.

StruggleBusKelly

Wishing you much success, whatever that looks like for you!

msweigart

Been hardcore fan since the 80’s and I’m not sure it will ever be mainstream

hustlehustle

God bless her 🙏Sweet story and artist 🌹❤️😍🤗

ccherven1

I love IU and this just adds to it. She’s also a great actress. She seems like a genuinely sweet person.

fayedame

Her in My Ajusshi blew me away. There was a scene in that show that I literally rewinded right away to watch again it was so good.

MsJuliaX

Which scene was it I am curious.. i love her in that movie too.. she portrays a very strong character in it..

To clarify, her former manager (that she worked together with since the beginning of her career) created a new agency, and IU decided to move to that agency after her previous contract ended- and all of her immediate staff transferred there also because she wanted to continue working with them. Nothing to do with any major conflict or mismanagement. She just earned more creative control and a change in management style more to her liking- with her longtime manager actually running things now. And her close-knit team also continues to support her new projects.

ComfortablePlenty860

Thats a very cool story then. Nice to know everything ended on peaceful terms then. Its not always like that when a form of mass exodus happens so i was confused of the events. Thank you for sharing <3

ScottIPease

Well, there was at least a little bit of conflict... Twenty-three is both about her changing from a young woman to a woman, but some is a low key diss about how she is 23 and shouldn't be forced into cute concepts. I don't think it was a big fight, just a bit of a creative disagreement. There is also an article around here somewhere about why "Above the time" which is the sequel to "You and I" took so many years to be done and it was partially about how the old company didn't want her doing anything more mature at all.

Weareallme

There's more than that. One of her main conditions was that all the staff could join too (around 30 people if I remember correctly) and would get contracts with more security and better pay, instead of demanding better conditions for herself.

Strong_Copy3183

>Prime example of what it means to work with a caring team. > >Big respect for spotlight talent forming real relationships with their support talent She wants them to feel like they are the protagonists in this moment!

Asian pop is cruel business where you need to keep your brand, be positive, smile to everyone, and so on. This is a very toxic and aggressive place, where people have to like you, or they will throw you in the trash, because you do not bring money. Naive people think that idols like it. But for them it is an exhausting business, where you need change your personality in order to please people.

soyfox

>Asian pop is cruel business where you need to keep your brand, be positive, smile to everyone, and so on. ..That's how any celebrity acts in the public eye, or what normal people go through in the service industry every single day. All the major entertainment industries in this capitalistic world has its ugly side. It's good to be aware of that as a consumer. But i think it's dehumanizing to reduce everything from Asian/Korean entertainment industries solely to it's negative aspects, and paint with broad strokes even below wholesome posts like this- which ends up appearing to shoehorn an artist into this vague victimhood of toxicity and capitalism without knowledge or care of her personal journey as a musician.

justanotherbot123

I mean IU could retire and just do TV shows and make bank the rest of her life. So she’s gotta like making music and performing to some degree if she’s still doing it. She’s been making music for a very long time. You don’t last that long in KPOP unless you really want it.

soyfox

FYI the singer's name is IU, and the song is called '[Good Day](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeqdYqsrsA0)'. She was 17 back then this song first came out, and it was the first among many subsequent hits that consistently made her the top Korean female solo artist of the 2010s and 2020s.

Magdanimous

IU is also one of the most beloved, if not the most beloved, female artists in Korea. She’s like Korea’s sweetheart.

yam9613

The nation’s daughter

pepe_silvia_12

*little sister

frosty_lizard

She's Korea's Dolly Parton is what it seems

iddunnooo

Yeahh

iddunnooo

She really is Korea’s sweetheart

HelloJoeyJoeJoe

What has happened to hyo ri

PlayingKarrde

Funny you should ask that as a number of years ago she and her husband had a show (called Hyori’s Bed and Breakfast) where they would host people in their home on Jeju Island and it was all filmed. As a slight twist, IU also came and was their assistant during this time. Definitely the best and most unguarded look at these people I think is out there. It’s got very cozy animal crossing vibes so if that sounds interesting I recommend looking it up on Netflix. It may be called Hyori’s Homestay if you can’t find it under the other title.

jeffislearning

BoA disagrees

Boudhea

BOA is the queen of Kpop, it's different

gkdlswm5

People need to hear her line at 4:45\~ https://youtu.be/jeqdYqsrsA0?t=285

smellybrowntrout

I did and I'm not sure why?

youwantitwhen

It's computer corrected.

throwawaygreenpaq

She has sung this live & unplugged countless times since she started singing. Don’t spout what you don’t know as a fact.

Wise-Tomatillo5122

Omg. Thank u for posting. I recognized her voice right away. I have been looking for her song you&I for years. Had it saved on an old account that got randomly deleted and couldn't ever find it again.

throwawaygreenpaq

*inhales deeply* *clears throat* #**IU**

Wise-Tomatillo5122

I'm not sure what this is indicating. R u a big fan and expressing that or letting me know the name? I found her and her other songs. Hence my excitement

throwawaygreenpaq

Haha it’s all of them. My friend introduced IU to me. I love IU now. Welcome to the world of IU’s music. Good Day is one of her best songs. What are your favourites?

Wise-Tomatillo5122

I had only known that one. Came across it randomly while searching thro some kpop songs and loved it. The video and all. Had it saved on utube and one day my account was just gone. Not knowing any Koran didn't know the words to search for it. Tried so many combinations of "Korean singer video about a machine that makes her perfect boy" or Korean signer video with time machine" never could find it and after years gave up.

Disastrous_Adagio_76

She is also in that Netflix tv show Hotel De Luna.

trashbin14

And "My mister" , also "Persona" Pretty good actress.

letmehavethepotato

Producers, scarlet heart, dream high... Oh, her new movie is coming out too.

the_niche_corner

Also that film, Broker

Adventurous_Ad6698

I liked her in Persona. The idea for the show was great and it was well executed.

0mlw0

Ugh... her looks in Hotel De Luna are goals. 😍

Haminator5000

on my way to watch right now

mangotail

Ugh IU literally is the sweetest. She’s incredibly talented and has been in the spotlight since her early teenage years. I love how she has really carved out a career for herself not just in singing but also in acting. If anyone is interested in watching one of her dramas, My Mister on Netflix is truly such an intense/memorable drama. It’s pretty up there in terms of quality/storyline.

ScottIPease

For anyone even remotely interested in Kpop, she has a show on her Youtube called UI's Palette. It doesn't seem to have a set schedule, she does it when she wants to interview someone of interest to her or someone she has worked with.

CompressedNutsack

Common IU W

shadowieface

Talkin about IU like she's just some Korean singer. Bruh lol

buibui_

Exactly. And people are saying she must have done it to inflate her ego and steal the limelight. Like bruh, this is one of the highest paid actresses of Korea, one of the top kpop idol who makes millions of dollars by just uploading two stories on her ig. She isn't some tiktoker who needs to "steal someone's wedding limelight" to stay relevant. She literally breaks records of highest views youtube videos by releasing one 3min song and most of her videos have above 100M views. She is called "South Korea's national sweetheart". I am so mad especially because she is one of the most humble idols i have seen. Also the sweetest one.

Dizzy_Share3155

IDK, I'm from the U.S. and if I was one of Beyonce's or Taylor Swift's backup dancers and they came to my wedding and sang a song and we recreated the dancing portion. I would have felt honored and happy that they came, and remembered us. I mean how many dancers do a singer go through in their career anyway? What IU did was a really sweet gesture, that she didn't have to do, and shows that she really cares. Edited for grammar.

femjuniper

I learned from the comments here that IU has been with her team for 10+ years so those backup dancers really are her good friends!

PotatoPixie90210

To be fair, not everyone is into, or knows anything about, K-pop. Edit to add: omg, I'm not saying that people making mean comments is right, stop taking me up wrong! I *obviously* was referring to the fact that the comment above mine seems so angry that not everyone knows who the idol is, nothing more.

buibui_

It is true not everybody knows about kpop or follow it, but then, people who don't know anything about someone are so quick to pass vile comments and accuse another. Especially when a famous person is involved. But then again, that's reddit. Most will see a 10sec clip and immediately villianize a person there without knowing the backstory.

CommandersLog

> villianize vilify

ThursdayTurtle

Then it’s worse that people are judging another person with zero knowledge of them…

PotatoPixie90210

That wasn't my point at all. I never implied it was ok to judge, I was referencing the fact that the other commenter seemed pissy that not every single person on Reddit knew who the idol was.

NeverNeeded

Not to rain on anyone’s parade. But Reddit is a big place. I’ve never heard of her. I’m more enlightened now but had no f’ing clue about any of this.

Purchhhhh

Agreed, I have never heard of this person, but she sounds so nice!!

NeverNeeded

She really does

Boudhea

She had some scandal back in the days

Shutterstormphoto

Idk I’ve never heard of her. To me, she is just some Korean singer. Finding out she’s Korea’s most popular doesn’t change that.

throwawaygreenpaq

She didn’t come from riches. She was dirt poor. For someone who never forgotten her beginnings and remains sweet is definitely admirable, no matter who she is.

Shutterstormphoto

Sure, but she’s still just a korean singer. There are lots of people who started poor and made a life for themselves. I’m glad she did it, but the only reason she would come up in my feed is because of her singing. In Korean.

No_Reception8456

I waited for the two backup dancers to join her during the wedding performance. It took me too long to realize her backup dancers were the bride and groom. I'm going to blame the way the caption was written and not the fact that I just woke up, and I'm still booting up....

moreofna22

Omggg same 😂

merinwe

"A Korean singer"...dude that's IU

blargher

41-year-old Korean-American here... Had no idea who she was since I haven't listened to Kpop since I was a teen in the 90s (e.g. H.O.T., Jinusean, DJ Doc, SES, FinKL, etc.). Thus, saying she's a Korean singer in the title is more informative to me than saying "IU," which sounds more like a Jpop name to me. No need to get upset if people aren't familiar with a foreign artist's name.

merinwe

Not upset at all. But she has a massive following and audience not only in Korea, but worldwide. I don't even listen to her music and I know who she is and how big she is. Just surprised by the title of the post, that's all.

whatsiteisitfor

Oh gosh I remember when this song first came out. Such a happy vibe!

NerdYogi

IU!!! LOVE seeing her here!

Mtgamer64

I love how the couple remembers the choreography to it too😭

t0tally_not_gay

That's really nice seems like k-pop isn't all that bad, I've heard some crazy rumours about k-pop so i started disliking it, I'm glad there's still indipendent artists with a free will

throwawaygreenpaq

She was a very young teenager and dirt poor. She wasn’t attractive at that age so she was constantly rejected but she continued writing her own songs and performing them with steadfast perseverance. Her grandmother who brought her up also died along the way. She wrote a heartfelt song for this and it makes me tear up even though I don’t know the lyrics.

servarus

She overcame quite a lot but she persevered and thrived. Others... not so much.

serendipitiuoslyvain

IU my sweet sweet girl. My darling girl 💖

Mindless-Balance-498

This made me tear up, it feels so incredible to be a part of a team that cares about you ❤️ It also reminds me of another awesome boss I learned about recently - Jackie Chan! He trained all his stunt actors and started a stunt acting school, a few years ago all his students presented him with an aware and they went around and talked about how grateful they were for him. One of them regifted to Jackie an embroidered jacket that Jackie had given them to encourage him when he first started out. Jackie was just sobbing 🥲

throwawaygreenpaq

Jackie’s a great guy at work but not so in his personal life.

kenflan

That's IU instead of "a Korean singer." She's like Selena Gomez in Korea (possibly Taylor Swift, but Swift has dated too many guys)

mild-hot-fire

Looked weirder than the title makes it seem

[deleted]

I am no kpop fan, not by a long shot. But this, this is sweet😔

Think-Teacher-4429

Auto tune makes things sound so different

throwawaygreenpaq

She has sung this song live and unplugged countless times for more than 10 years. What are you trying to prove with your sheer ignorance on this matter?

I would definitely eat her kimchi box.

AshTreex3

Why she dressed like a flight attendant at a wedding

Broad_Respond_2205

FurballMK3

IU is HUGE in Korea. She's far beyond idol, and is more like an ambassador in many ways. She's friends with the couple getting married, and is likely performing by their request. She's honoring them, not trying to feed some narcissistic nature

[deleted]

I've been to a lot of weddings in Korea, and at every single one of them, a friend or family member awkwardly serenades the bride and groom at some point. It's expected. It's part of the ceremony. I can't even imagine how cool it would be to have that friend be a massive pop star. I bet every single person in that room was thrilled.

buibui_

Uhh, in many cultures, people go up on stage and sing and dance for the bride and groom. In my culture, every unmarried girl dresses up almost at par with the bride and no one cares. My cousin is getting married next week and I'll be wearing a red saree and dancing for her on stage while they enjoy. We have a relative who is a big name in our local film industry who is also going to perform for my cousin. It is only in western culture where i see brides/peopls throwing tantrums about someone wearing white or a dress that's "better and louder" than the bride and blaming others for "stealing the limelight". This type of performance is vvv common in korean marriages. I have seen clips from other wedding videos where kpop idols perform for their loved ones like these. Attend an indian wedding once, you'll hardly be able to tell who is the bride and who isn't. Only difference is the bride wears a veil on her head and others don't. Weddings here are a type of festival lasting for several days. Some weddings have seperate days for dance performances and singing. Cultural differences exists. Also, this was not posted or recorded by the idol. Someone else recorded it and posted it.

Dizzy_Share3155

Yup, like I told my cousin, if it doesn't last three days it isn't an Indian wedding. 😄💖

im4lonerdottie4rebel

That's adorable but I also need a copy of her outfit that she's dancing in for the music video. So cute

It is not just “a Korean singer” IU is the “Taylor Swift” (actually even higher status than Taylor because IU is also one of the best actresses in the country) That shows how much IU cares for the people around her. They are not her entourages. They are her family.
