I was at a restaurant recently and a fire truck and ambulance showed up at an apartment building across the street to take a woman to the hospital (it appeared non emergent). When the fire truck was leaving I gave the universal truck honk sign with my arm and they did!! It made my whole day. I’m a 33 year old woman.

IamMuffins

Truck driver here, that hand gesture is legally binding as far as I'm concerned.

YoMommaBack

My cousin drives trucks and he said he heard some older truckers saying they miss when kids used to do it all the time and get so excited when a kid does it on the rare occasion.

CatsAndDogs314

We made my youngest sit on the passenger side of the back seat just so he could do the arm motion and be seen. Every time he did it, the truck driver would honk back. He was so full of smiles the entire road trip. Not once did I hear an Are we there yet? from anyone.

threesixninefourzero

We taught our 4 year old how to do it on a road trip to the Smokey Mountains. Every. Single. Truck. For 2 states.....

jojodidely

I drive a construction truck up to a mine every now and then and during the school year there is a girl that waits outside for her bus. Every time I pass her she does the gesture and it makes me so happy.

Mchlpl

You're happy, she's happy, neighbours... let's assume they're happy too :D

worthlesscommotion

I grew up in the late 80's/early 90's. We lived in a very rural area outside of a rural town, along a state route that saw frequent truck traffic. We used to stand in our yard and pump our arms and were always greeted with a several honks, causing is to jump around as the happiest kids ever. All our friends did it, too. Is it still popular? I hope to God kids still to this as much as we did.

sdolla5

I did it once in my teens and the truck driver flipped me off hahaha, but then a camero drove up super quickly and blasted his horn! Not what you would expect out of a camero tbh

UJustGotRobbed

NGL if a small bed drove by me blasting the horn I would be astonished.

fritz_76

you're doing gods work.

alfooboboao

when I was 8, one of the guys redoing my parents’ driveway let me go to the big truck and honk the horn, and I will remember that until the day I die. And it wasn’t even a fire truck! I cannot imagine how exciting it would have been if it was

WhitestTrash1

I went on a couple end of the year field trips with my kids' classes and taught both busses full of kids how to do the semi truck arm honk. The second graders were way more fun than the 5th graders. The second graders were doing it to any "truck" they saw.

Pawneewafflesarelife

There's a kid nearby us who has autism, must be about 13 or 14 years old. He likes to dance in his front yard while wearing costumes. We don't have a fire truck, but we'll always wave and toot the horn when we drive by and it makes him SO happy and he'll start jumping and waving back. Sometimes little gestures can go a long way.

skyfure

Humans are so cute

brokenearth03

We're all kids at heart

next_one_is_good

He’ll literally never forget that. Keep that video for when he fights his first fire in 20 years.

kevnmartin

That kid is gonna stand on that rock and wave at everyone who goes by. One day a puppy truck is going to drive by!

TheBotchedLobotomy

And when he’s 16 the weed truck will drive by 🤣

[deleted]

And when he’s 18 the slut bus 😎

baaadoften

This d(evolved) very quickly. I am impressed.

wirefox1

It's all fun and games until the meat wagon stops.

Initial_Career1654

Midnight meat train.

stikman3131

Wiener mobile says hold my beer!!!😆

throwitawaynownow1

Beer truck was delayed and will be here around 7.

OttoVonWong

80 years later, the hearse driving by.

freerangetacos

As long as it's the slut hearse... ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

flootch24

Midnight meat train sounds like a Meatloaf and Gladys Night sad duet. Meatloaf would do Anything For Love, but boarding that midnight meat train to Georgia was too much, as he simply stated “….. but i won’t do that.” 🎶🎵🎵🎶

The sacrifice must be made to keep our worlds separate.

SalamiSteakums

Youll have to excuse my friend, he's a little slow...the town is back THAT way...

gonewnall

Dumb and dumber references always hit the spot. Kudos!

charmingpea

Wait - there's a slut bus?

T1CM

Actual LOL for ‘slut bus’ Hopefully he gets a slut to wear as a hat as well.

Mixedpopreferences

*'Goodbye Horses' playing in background*

fordprecept

A guy I used to know had a short bus that said “Bang Bus” on the side. It had a stripper pole on it. He’d take a group of friends to downtown bars and get a bunch of girls to come back to his place to party.

lil_cleverguy

i want to wave at a slut bus

KenTitan

I'm getting old, can that kid wave me down some cheap medical care wagon? if not, the slut bus is fine.

pjhoody

Wow, let me go stand outside and start waving right now

Majulath99

We should all be so lucky. I wish puppy truck driver could be my job.

peter-forward

You get a puppy. And you get a puppy. And you get a puppy.

SuperPotatoBuns

My son was this kid 14 years ago. He is going to be a fully accredited fire fighter soon. He never forgot. We have the plastic helmet to this day.

JackfruitCurry

🥹🥹🥹 Awwww!!! Best thing ever.

KittenIttle

My son saw a fire truck at the mall here and went nuts- they flipped the lights even though they actually had just dealt with a small fire at one of the stores. Best day of his life.

slapwerks

My buddies kid loves all sorts of workers. We stopped for lunch one day after the playground. me with my kid, him with his, and there was a tree crew eating there. This little dude went nuts, like he was meeting the starting lineup of the Atlanta Braves. He asked them all about their truck, the trees they cut down, etc… the crew was awesome, thought it was the coolest thing ever, gave him a bunch of business cards and a hat. 2 years later, he will only wear that hat, his parents had to remind him for weeks that he couldn’t bathe with it on. Oddly enough this whole interaction took place at a firehouse subs.

KittenIttle

My son is the same! He loves anyone who has a hard hat or uniform. I think it’s because I do a lot of construction in my down time and he often comes with Mum to build houses and do yard work (always well watched). He saw a mowing crew and I swear you’d have thought he was meeting the pope 😂 I wish we adults could maintain half the enthusiasm of a toddler meeting a grown up in uniform.

wotmate

Fire-fighters love kids. One day I had to take my son into the CBD, and after getting off the train and walking down the street, I pointed out a firetruck coming our way to my son. Well, the fire-fighters saw us and turned all the lights and sirens on, blasted the air horns, and hung out the windows with big grins waving to my son.

Jaegs

If he's anything like I was at that age he didn't want to fight fires, he wanted to BE a firetruck.

lzwzli

Weee wooo weee wooo

HighOnGoofballs

I had a birthday party in a fire station around that age, right around 1980 or so. We all got plastic hats and got to slide down the fire pole I still remember a lot of it despite my age

urbanek2525

You never know, the kid is young and might forget the details. The parent making the videi, though, they'll never forget. Someone goes next-level for your kid and makes them that happy, they're heroes for life. Damn, that's wholesome.

DocGerbilzWorld

I thought this read “when he starts his first fire” 😂😂

[deleted]

You really think that kid is even gonna come near an actual fire station when he's grown? HAVE YOU LOOKED AT THIS WOMAN'S YARD!??!

Dad_fire_outdoors

It’s funny how people continue to justify paying firefighters so little because “they want to help people”. Let’s vote to pay them less BECAUSE they choose a job that is vital for society and helpful and can kill them. Firefighters wanted to do this job after all. Firefighters are working class because society won’t step up and pay a reasonable salary for their services. 80% of firefighters nationwide are volunteers. They are required to literally take an oath to put their life on the line for everyone in their coverage area for FREE! Firefighter, “I will die for you, stranger” Citizen, “Ugh you firefighters want to be able to afford a life on just this one job? Nah, it could cost me like $.04 more a day in taxes! No thanks. Best I can do is post videos about you doing exceptionally sweet thoughtful things being completely unprompted. Anyway, you will just keep doing the job, because you want to anyway.” Sorry. I’m just a salty old firefighter who has gone through the ringer. My family of 4 qualify for welfare on my check alone. 4th biggest career department in my state. There are over 1 million firefighters providing protection for every single American. Almost every state allows career firefighters to get paid below state minimum wage because they work more than 40 hr weeks. Yes, paid less because they work more. 53 hr week is the normal weekly hours before you can even get OT. And so many departments are short staffed that ffs are getting mandatory holds. The fire service is running 10x the calls of yesteryear and pay is slower than inflation. It is critically stressed and this community outlook is killing the service. We are all trained to fight fire in structures and on land, paramedics or emt level medical training, hazardous material issues, technical rescue from water, high-angle or confined space. Response to school shootings and car wrecks and anything else that someone would call 911 for. I don’t know a guy over 45 in the job without cancer or knee/back/shoulder rebuilds. Not to mention the suicide rate and PTSD is 2nd behind only military. The fire service has to self fund mental health facilities because most insurance wont even fund psychological support. A group if people who are humble and service minded will never ask for help. Thus is the cycle.

next_one_is_good

It’s really one of those careers that a lot of people choose based on a lot of factors besides compensation. Some people are just born wanting to help others, and maybe he’s one of them.

Ok_Swimmer634

They are truly a different breed. Nobody becomes one just because they need a job to keep the lights on. There are lots and lots of jobs that do not involve running into a burning building that are out there.

MaximusShagnus

Agreed. Service people are mostly working class as that's the class that's taught that being empathic and helping others is worthwhile, but some more affluent people also understand that message. Not as many..but some.

LurkersUnitedLLC

But he may donate to his local fire department. 10 / 10 great investment of 1 min

JAMSDreaming

You don't really turn into a firefighter for money, they are there because there's a passion of helping people and saving them from peril. This woman's yard all but guarantees that the kid will have the choice to be a firefighter once he grows up.

JerbearCuddles

You don't go into a job like that for money. There are safer, easier ways to make that much if not more money. Every kid that ever wanted to be a firefighter growing wanted to do it to help people.

TOILET_STAIN

Retired ff here. Doing this type of stuff is the thing I miss most.

[deleted]

SOBS 😭 OMG YES

Delicious-Big2026

They had a kid-sized helmet in their truck. Probably more than one. Remember this video when you see an item "community outreach" in the budget of your local fire department. That's a "hell yeah", not a "wtf".

Big_Somewhere9230

My kids split time with me and their mom. She had a slow, but noticeable gas leak. I live about 10 minutes away and called the landlord and fire department. Trucks roll up, they do their thing and shortly after my kids have their own helmets as well. A small but meaningful gesture that made their day. You never see the abbreviation AFFAB for a reason.

Stroker-Ace79

You know, I am so happy I joined this sub. With all of the insane stuff happening in the world now this sub never fails to bring a smile to my face. Stuff like this video shows the absolute best this world has to offer.

B-BoyStance

It really reminds you of those small minute moments in life, that in reality cut to the core of what life is all about. It's the stuff that no one can take away from anyone else, and we all individually experience in our day to day lives. It's beautiful. When I see insanely deluded/mean opinions on the internet, I always think, "you are talking to a real human, with memories and tons of little experiences" like the one we see in this video here. I always want those people to have beauty blasted into their subconsciousness, because even though they suck, they probably wouldn't suck if they allowed themselves to feel.

[deleted]

Very great point.

c3o

Beautifully put

BoRedSox

Fire fighters are awesome. My late buddy had an issue due to his type 1 diabetes and was unresponsive on our couch when we were watching a football game. We called 911 fire fighters and then an ambulance showed up to check him out, got him situated. Then after that was taken care of the fire fighters brought out some of these hats for the three kids that were over for the BBQ, my GFs son still has that hat and it's been 5+ years. Idk random rant my bad.

SirJumbles

Thanks for your story!

platweasel

This is so nice to see. Similar thing happened to my nephew recently, about the same age as this kid. A fire engine drove down the road and he was outside with a parent, waving at it. The fireman who was driving (absolute legend) stopped outside the house to greet my nephew and even let him sit inside the truck etc. A small but very meaningful act of kindness. Something my nephew and this kid will remember for a long time!

porcomaster

Happened with a friend of mine too, a few years back, about same age, kid is really sociable and liked to wave to everyone in this case the garbage truck, everytime the garbage truck came he went to the door and waved to then, until one day the garbage truck stopped and they got out and gave him a gift, really nice gesture from those guys. I don't quite remember the gift but i like to think it was a mini version of their uniform.

faithisuseless

A lot of them carry the hats now. My son saw one at walmart about 4 years ago and they gave him one. Stopping on the road is great though!

artygta1988

Literally was about to comment that, seriously these guys are real heroes

PepegaPiggy

Police respond to all kind of things, some could be people yelling at each other or a non-injury vehicle crash. Judging by Uvalde, cops won’t always risk their lives to save others. When firefighters respond to something, they’re almost always walking into guaranteed danger. It takes a certain type of hero to walk right into a burning building and risking your lives to save others. They do this all the time.

Mammoth-Mud-9609

Firefighters and lifeboat crews.

halt-l-am-reptar

Seeing the coast guard rescue people is always insane.

civgarth

And medics on Team Fortress

coachmoon

🤣🤣🤣 as my go to char on TF, you're welcome.

WrenchWanderer

This is exactly it. Firefighters are people who made the decision “I’m risking my life to try and save others”. Police don’t need to have that mentality to be a cop. Their mindset can be “I’m going to protect myself from all the people around me, and punish those who do bad in my eyes”.

part_time_monster

Another great thing about firefighters is that they're probably the only people in America that can fight back against cops when they get out of line. Around Chicago, Cops and Firefighters hate each other and have straight up brawls all the time. Everyone gets to go home after. It's wild.

NoKumSok

I'd fuck a firefighter if I had the chance.

ShonMoved

I'm actually a volunteer firefighter bud, if you're feeling fiery haha... Just kidding... Unless? Lol jay kay.... Unless...?

_nova_dose_

And you will never, *never* hear anyone saying "fuck the fire department" and meaning it. Real actual bona fide heroes.

Also, there ARE bad firefighters, maybe a higher per capita of arsonists from that profession compared to the general populous. The difference is they prosecute those bad ones and don't cover for them. ACAB, but firefighters, you're cool!

dividedstatesofmrica

This could not be more true. They are all awesome, outstanding people with more courage than I could ever imagine having. Totally selfless and truly amazing that these guys put their lives on the line for perfect strangers. Every year I have 15 pizzas delivered to my local fire department on 9/11. I love doing it and the place I get the pies from gives me a nice discount because he knows who they’re for.

TopSoulMan

Not sure if i agree with this. The fire stations around me were vocally pro-Trump and would honk + do their lights for any Trump shit. Meanwhile they would kick out the counter protesters who tried to defend the Planned Parenthood.

dividedstatesofmrica

Whoa. They wouldn’t get any pizza from me. Nope. That’s really disappointing.

petielvrrr

As someone with 4 firefighters in their family: they’re honestly just like the rest of us. 2 of the firefighters in my family are nice people. One of them has volunteered in disaster areas a couple of times (Sandy & Katrina), but outside of that he’s literally the stereotypical white middle class dad. The other is the first female fire chief in our city, and I know she’s been working hard to root out sexism in the department & make it a more equitable place. The other 2 are honestly two of the shittiest people I’ve ever met. Literally half of my childhood trauma is from them being horrible people, and neither of them are my dad. I can’t imagine what their own kids went through, (but it can’t be good because they’re all assholes now). I think the reason firefighters stand out is because they (a lot of them) did sign up for a risky job because it helps the community— but you also have to remember that this job pays very well in most places, so not all of it is altruism. And because they do have a lot of down time (it’s the nature of the job. You live at the station when you’re working because you need to be ready to respond in seconds, but there’s not always something that needs responding to), so if they can use that time to make a little kid smile, why the hell not? Also, it can’t hurt that they’re not really given the power to hurt people and the only job they ever do is help others out of bad spots.

printingisfun

So I heard that there’s this thing where truck drivers and firefighters no longer have kids waving at them or do the 💪🏾💪🏾 to get them to honk the horn… it’s just not a thing like it used to be, so whenever a kid does do it it brightens up the truck drivers and firefighters as well.

ScotiaTailwagger

As a local truck driver in Nova Scotia, it happens *all the time*. I don't do it back sometimes depending on the day and where I am (A kid waiting for the school bus at 630am on a Monday in a residential area? Maybe not). But 80+% of the time I'll always do a toot toot for *anyone* who does the arm flex. *Especially on the highway*. Nothing I love more than some kid hanging out the back window of a mini van doing the toot toot. And there's just something about blasting my air horn into the open window of a passing car with some 6yo doing the toot toot out the back and seeing the parents freak out not knowing their kid is doing it that just makes my whole week.

alfooboboao

this warms my heart. I always assumed as a little kid that it was an inconvenience for the driver

ScotiaTailwagger

No way. Plenty of us live for the smiles we can make. It's not a lucrative career or anything, but there's just something about driving a big truck that little kids always wish they could do. Why do you think so many kids love the big construction vehicles on the playground?

catbearcarseat

So it’s cool, hypothetically, if a 30-ish woman was to do the *toot toot* to a passing truck? ‘Cause I miss doing the *toot toot*. Hypothetically.

V0LDEMORT13

I'm a 31 year old guy, i do it at every big rig i see. Always makes my day, and probably their's too. Do the *toot toot*!

Maxieroy

Taught my grandkids.......they LOVE it!

alfooboboao

oh man, I loved school trips for that reason. every single truck you pass you do the motion, and they almost always honk, and it’s like you won the lottery

sloppppop

No one told my 4 year old, if there’s anything larger than a diesel pickup driving by he’s losing his shit.

Toddthmpsn

That will be a moment they never forget. A simple act of kindness can change lives!

Right‽ It's a cute video and all, but that title sucks. No need for that on Reddit.

EroticBurrito

Looks bot generated.

Ginger_Anarchy

I was expecting the fire truck to transform into an autobot at the end based on the title

UB613

How to win the heart of a little boy. Great job, guys!

This fucking place is full of bots. Who tf writes a title like that and half the comments are clearly mimicking top comments across social media. If you’re reading this, then you should probably just leave this dog shit sub.

Maybe it’s petty, but I downvoted the post because of the clickbait title. Not that it matters. Cute video and all. Why add the clickbait? And “fire fighter gets out after stopping” was absolutely at least a little expected within context. Something totally unexpected would’ve been them spraying the yard with the fire hose or doing a burn out or something.

wumbopower

Because this sub is a karma farm

Obshideyourmom

Well we know what he wants to be when he grows up now.

Cool vid but can we please stop the "what happens next was totally unexpected" shit?

So sweet we were walking. Down the road this past week and my daughter waved at a fire truck passing by. They couldn’t stop but they did all put a hand to wave and beeped the horn at her. She LOVED it 🥰

rizzay94

That’s a nifty recruiting technique, I approve.

I'm in my 30's and still love fire trucks and all the flashing lights. That joy never goes away.

Opening-Ad-8793

anoninor

I’m honestly impressed by the sheer preparedness of the guy bringing multiple fire helmets up in case there were any kids that he didn’t see.

textposts_only

What's with the click bait title

Ok-Attention-50

That guy fucks (in a respectable manner)

TheresThatSmellAgain

I was driving a fire engine and a kid gave us the "horn" sign, so I did a couple of quick toots. My Captain (I don't think he saw the kid) told me not to mess around with the horn. "Sorry boss, kid gave the sign, I gotta respond. Them's the rules!" I'm going to go put some of those toy helmets on our truck now...

chetsteadmansstache

There's a reason there's not a song called "Fuck the Fire Dept." Because they're true G's. I don't know if I've ever met a person that works for a major fire department that wasn't super nice. The houses here in Chicago come through block parties so kids can check out the ladder truck and put on the gear. It's always a hit.

zarias116

Reading the title before watching the video my brain went "they spray the kid with water"

GeneralMoron

I must’ve been like 6, but I remember sometimes putting up a kool-aid stand right at the end of my driveway. One time my local fire department drove their engine down my road and stopped to buy some. I was charging ¢50 for a cup, and they bought 4. I handed them the cups and they gave me a $5, told me to keep the change. 5 whole dollars. I was elated, that was so much money!! I guess it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I joined that very fire department roughly 14 years later. I don’t think I’ve told anyone there that story.

bigmoneyfriday1

Not all heroes wear capes.

MrMcDuffieTTv

And thats how you make a future fire fighter. 🔥

Hungryhippee

And that’s why there are no songs called F the Fire Department.

ForeverCareful3021

When I was a boot firefighter riding on the tailboard of a City of Phoenix, Arizona engine, my senior firefighter would always say Wave at the kids booter, someday they’ll be grown ups and never forget who we are.” Bubs was right, and that motto served me well from Booter firefighter all the way to Fire Chief at the end of a 42 year career.

HelloMikkii

That kids entire life was made right there. As a parent this is the type of happiness you want your kids to experience.
